Described below are some great places for train lovers to visit; most are ideal for an affordable family getaway, especially those that let kids sleep in a caboose.

California:  Featherbed Railroad Company, Nice, CA: Stay in a distinctively decorated caboose on the shores of Clear Lake.

Colorado:  Apple Orchard Inn, Durango, CO: Relax on the porch of your luxury cottage and watch the Durango-Silverton train pass in the distance.

Two Sisters Inn, Manitou Springs, CO. Enjoy this cozy B&B at the base of Pikes Peak, then ride the Manitou and Pike's Peak Railway to the 14,110-foot summit. In operation since 1891, it is the world's highest cog railroad and the highest railroad in the United States.

Connecticut:  Deacon Timothy Pratt Bed & Breakfast, Old Saybrook, CT: Combine a stay in this 1746 center chimney colonial Connecticut B&B with a dinner aboard the Essex Steam Train.

Missouri:  Hermann Hill Vineyard & Inn, Hermann, MO. Luxury B&B in the heart of Missouri wine country. Arrive on Amtrak, and the innkeepers will pick you up; bring your bikes and ride the KATY trail, a 225-mile rails-to-trails project.

Pennsylvania:  The Station Inn, Cresson, PA: A restored 1866 railroad hotel, just 150 feet from the Norfolk Southern tracks, with simply furnished rooms, and the Yard Office Saloon for food and drink. Serious railfans can appreciate this guarantee: "If rail traffic averages less than one train per hour for the duration of your stay, you will receive a discount of 50% off your room bill."

The Noble House, Marietta, PA: Stay in Peake's Parlor, a train-themed room with a video library of train movies, then enjoy a chicken barbeque dinner on the Middletown & Hummelstown Railroad.

Tennessee:  Prospect Hill B&B Inn, Mountain City, TN: Combine a stay in this luxury mountain mansion in far eastern Tennessee with a relaxing bike rides on the Virginia Creeper Trail, a rails-to-trails facility running from Whitetop Station to Abingdon, VA.
