History buffs, sports fans, shoppers, plus anyone else who loves the water will put Newport high on their list of top destinations. Founded in 1639, Newport offers everything from Colonial homes to Victorian mansions, lighthouses to sailing ships, chic shops to art galleries, and lots more. A great time to visit is in late winter or spring.

Newport's Southern counterpart is venerable Charleston, founded in 1670, with equally strong maritime traditions, a similar history of religious tolerance, and inviting streets to stroll and explore. Spring arrives early in South Carolina, and Charleston's magnificent gardens are but one reason to plan a February or March visit.
