Question:  Work and family pressures make it hard for us to plan ahead. How can we find last-minute getaway deals?

Answer:  You are not alone! People's concerns about the safety and inconvenience of air travel combined with economic uncertainty have translated into a huge upsurge in last-minute travel. Industry sources have been reporting big increases in "one-tank trips," often made as last-minute decisions, based on job pressures, baby sitters, weather forecasts, and the kids' soccer schedule.

Fortunately, the Internet makes it easy to find and book getaways online. Here's what you can do to find some great deals on great escapes:

  1. Sign up for BedandBreakfast.com Hot Deals. Each week, you'll receive emails advising you of available getaways at discounts of 20 percent and more.
  2. Sign up for email from your favorite B&Bs. Savvy innkeepers have "Procrastinator's Clubs" and will notify you by email of last-minute openings at great rates.
  3. Travel off-season. Although peak travel seasons vary by region, non-holiday weekends in November and January tend to be slow almost everywhere. If you like it hot, places like Palm Springs, Phoenix, and New Orleans have great summer deals, as do many mountain ski areas. If you like to cuddle when it's cold, look for winter getaways in major cities like Philadelphia or Chicago, or summer resort destinations like coastal Maine or Michigan.
  4. Stay multiple nights. You will have a more relaxing getaway if you stay several nights at the same inn. You'll sleep better, and will return home refreshed and recharged. Innkeepers love guests who stay several nights, and will often reward you with a third night free or half-price, depending on date & location. If you don't see such an offer posted on their website, don't hesitate to ask.
  5. Visit mid-week. Except at the busiest times of year, most B&Bs tend to have rooms available Sunday-Thursday nights. Even if you can only manage one night away during the week, you can take advantage of reasonable midweek rates, and can ask the innkeeper for an upgrade to the best available room at check-in time.

Be realistic. Don't expect to find bargains or even availability for peak periods like holiday weekends, college graduations, big football weekends, major conventions, and so on. At such times, book well in advance or risk spending a night in the no-tell motel, miles from your destination!

Be reasonable. A beautifully restored historic home, furnished with quality antiques, fine linens, and expensive new luxury bathrooms, where guests are served a wonderful breakfast and afternoon refreshments costs more than a budget motel. After all, you don't expect to spend the same for a dinner at a fast-food restaurant as at a fine-dining establishment, do you? Focus on the value not just the price.
