Many people love
to travel to a country inn or B&B for the
Thanksgiving or Christmas holidays. It's
important to make advance reservations, not
only for lodging, but for your holiday meal
as well, since many restaurants are booked
well in advance for Thanksgiving, and many
others close for Christmas.
Many B&Bs
stay open during Christmas, but the
extent to which the occasion is
celebrated varies widely indeed. We know
of many inns that decorate beautifully,
serve a fabulous meal, and organize all
kinds of traditional holiday activities.
But we've also visited others,
especially in ski areas that do little
more than throw a few token ornaments on
a tree.
If you'll
be traveling by car, allow extra time
for traffic and winter weather. If
you'll be flying, add even more time for
extra security precautions at the
airport.
Keep in
mind:
-
You'll
find man-made snow at the ski slopes,
but only Mother Nature can guarantee the
real stuff. If a drought or thaw leaves
the ground bare, remember that Christmas
is a state of mind. If you want to be
sure of snow, visit in January or
February.
-
Some
inns are closed December 24th and 25th,
so be sure to check.
-
Be aware
that it may not be possible to spend
hours Christmas morning opening gifts in
front of the tree, the way you would at
home.
-
Some
inns decorate lavishly for Christmas;
others just have a simple tree and
possibly a Hanukah menorah. Be sure to
choose an inn that suits your personal
comfort level.
-
The
holidays can be emotionally challenging.
Celebrate the moment; don't relive past
disappointments.
