Head to the White Mountains when they're green! Beautiful drives, great discount shopping (no sales tax), dramatic hiking, comfortable temperatures, and some of our all-time favorite inns make New Hampshire's North Conway area ideal for summer escapes.

Native American tradition explains that the Finger Lakes were created by the Great Spirit; the sixth lake was caused when his hand slipped. Today we credit glacial action, but either way, beautiful scenery abounds, with dramatic gorges and waterfalls to explore. Great wineries, too.

I frequently visit Kansas City, Missouri on business. Do you recommend adding a few extra days for fun?

Sure do! We were just there, and our only frustration was that we didn't have enough time for everything we wanted do see and do. Just opened downtown is Science City at Union Station, an amazing multi-media, multi-purpose renovation of the country's second largest train station.

If you want to stay in town, choose the Southmoreland neighborhood of stately homes, close to the Moorish architectural fantasy of Country Club Plaza, with its fine shops and good restaurants. Art lovers will appreciate the fact that the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art are close by. On a prior visit, we've enjoyed one of the area's first B&Bs, the lovely Southmoreland on the Plaza; this time, we stayed at LaFontaine Inn. The Autumn room has an restful color scheme of camel and rose, plus an oversize steam shower in the bathroom; the best feature of the cozy little Summer room is its spacious private porch and hot tub. Prefer a country getaway? Rolling green hills are less than an hour away. The best value around is the immaculate Mulberry Hill B&B in Pleasant Hill. Our favorite rooms in this immaculate 1904 home are the Rose Garden and the Garden of Eden on the third floor. The Inn on Crescent Lake juxtaposes elegant, sophisticated décor and modern luxury with period charm and a serenely bucolic setting. By prior reservation, dinner is served to overnight guests by the French-trained chef innkeepers. Be sure to visit the fascinating Hall of Waters in nearby Excelsior Springs.

Historic Independence is home to the Truman Library, with a fascinating exhibit of letters between Harry and Bess. Serious collectors will appreciate the profusion of collectibles and myriad memorabilia at the Serendipity B&B . We were enchanted by innkeeper Patricia Justice, who has highlighted the décor of the Woodstock Inn B&B with fascinating antiques purchased when she and her husband Todd lived in Asia. Weston, Missouri is an old-fashioned river town, with dozens of restored 150-year-old brick homes, now filled with appealing antique shops, galleries, and restaurants. Recommended inns included the Benner House, the Hatchery House, where we especially liked the Holladay Room, and the Inn at Weston Landing (816-640-5788), part of a Irish-themed complex with a pub, brewery, and restaurant.
