Henry Hudson sailed the majestic river that bears his name in 1609. Nearly 300 years later, the area's natural beauty is complemented by a plethora of sights and attractions, from the nation's leading military academy to its top culinary school, from the homes of famous painters to those of U.S. Presidents.

Question: I'm going to Grand Rapids, Michigan on a business trip. Is there any reason to stay through the weekend?

Answer: Absolutely! This appealing city is delightful for strolling, offers great summer concerts, many museums and gardens, rich architecture, and welcoming B&Bs. In fact, all that's missing are its eponymous rapids, since they were removed a century ago by the logging industry.

Combining plentiful supplies of lumber and water power, Grand Rapids was known in the 19th century for its fine furniture, and continues as a leader in the production of office furniture. In good weather, make your first stop the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park, with beautiful nature trails and dramatic sculptures, including Leonardo da Vinci's 24-foot-tall bronze horse. Additional attractions include the Gerald R. Ford presidential museum (would you believe the Watergate burglary tools are on display!), and several local museums, most ideal for a family visit. Art and architecture buffs will enjoy the numerous Alexander Calder sculptures and the beautifully restored homes of the Heritage Hill historic district, with everything from Queen Anne Victorian mansions to Craftsman-style bungalows, from a stone castle to a restored Frank Lloyd Wright home. Evening activities include a long list of free or modestly priced concerts, plays, and sporting events. Four local colleges ensure an ample supply of welcoming pubs, while surprisingly creative fine dining can be found at San Chez, A Tapas Bistro on West Fulton, and the Sierra Room, around the corner on Ionia. Most of Grand Rapid's B&Bs are found in the lovely Heritage Hill historic district, a pleasant walk (in good weather) from the downtown business section, restaurants and in-town attractions. Business travelers are welcomed during the week with competitive midweek rates. Closest to downtown is the Fountain Hill B&B, a handsome 1874 Italianate home with gracious common areas, an inviting garden, and appealing guest rooms. Named for a Scottish highlands fishing village, the Tobermory B&B has three cheerful guest rooms and a cozy atmosphere. An appealing homestay B&B is the Madison Street Inn, an eclectic Craftsman-style home with oversize rooms and original oak and cherry woodwork. Still under renovation when we visited (4/01) is the Deane House B&B (616-235-7061), just across the street. More Michigan inns...
