We invited 6 of our friends and spent the weekend with the Shaver's. Terrific food/wine/hospitality and the murder mystery was a huge hit with our group. Highly recommend this B&B.

Just came home from a wonderful weekend! Joan was a perfect hostess. We arrived a little late but was made to feel right at home by coming in the back door into the homey kitchen. She showed us our beautiful room ( Carolina Room) and surprised us with fresh flowers and chilled champagne! Breakfast both days was fantastic! My husband jokingly asked where was the gravy to go with the biscuits(we are from the south!) and the next morning she had made him gravy. After explaining why I could not eat her crepes and jam(diabetes) she filled my plate the next morning with things I could eat making sure not to "tempt " me with the forbidden food. The bed was comfortable, the entire house including the bathroom was spotless. We even had soft, fluffy robes for our comfort. A small fridge upstairs made sure we had plenty to drink at night if we became thirsty. Coffee was placed outside our bedroom door each morning with beautiful china cups to make us feel extra special. Thank you Joan and your "maintenance man" for a beautiful anniversary weekend! We had a comfortable visit to this old Victorian home near downtown Abingdon. Upon arrival, we enjoyed a dip in the hottub and since we were the only midweek guests, we had it all to ourselves. This was followed by cheese, crackers, wine and good conversation with our hose Joan Shaver (she and her husband had the same first names as another couple we know). The Carolina room made for a quaint sleep after our night at the Barter and we were greeted in the morning by coffee outside our room and then an amazing breakfast!!! We would recommended this fairly affordable B&B to anyone.

The house is on a quiet residential street a little less than a mile from the center of town -- an easy walk, but would recommend driving at night. We attended a play at the fabulous Barter Theater, and if you like regional theaters and quality plays, this one is a gem. The 34-mile Virginia Creeper Trail also begins in Abingdon, and the town has other small treasures as well. The five guest rooms are located on the second floor (no elevator), and the only drawback is the lack of bathrooms connected to the rooms. There are three bathrooms off the hall on the second floor and one half-bath (we were told) on the ground floor. We were the only guests on the night we stayed, so walking down the hall a few feet to a separate bathroom was no problem, but if all the rooms are occupied . . . well, you can do the math. If there is a full bath available for each room then this comment should be corrected by someone who knows. Otherwise, we had a delightful stay. Our room was spacious and artfully decorated. The four-poster bed was firm and comfortable. Breakfast was delicious, and our hosts were gracious and welcoming.

    Innkeeper Response
There is a full bath for each room, except that rooms 3 and 4 (w/2 twin beds) connect and share the bath across the hall. Rooms 1 and 2 get the two baths at the end of the hall, and if room 5 is occupied, they have a full private bath on the 3rd floor and get a discount on their room rate. Whehever I have had all the rooms occupied, I have not had anyone express disappointment.

After a 3 day backpacking trip, my husband and I spent an incredibly nice and relaxing night at Shavers... from the relaxing bath in the footed tub to the little "extras" (afternoon refreshments) to the amazing breakfast, we enjoyed it all. The rooms are very clean, the service great.
