General InformationTanglewood is the perfect combination of informality and luxury for your visit to the Shenandoah Valley. The beautiful three-acre estate offers easy access to various attractions including the nearby entrance to Shenandoah National Park and the world famous Skyline Drive, which is just five minutes away. It is a great base for visiting Virginia wine and horse country, Civil War battlefields, Washington, D.C. or Charlottesville. There is an amazing selection of wineries, major historical sites, antique shops, horseback riding, hiking, canoeing and golf. A few days in the country ought to be very special. At Tanglewood your hosts, Joe and Susan, make every effort to make your time memorable, relaxing and fun. There are three large suites in the historic manor house, all with queen or king-size beds, antiques, art, and whirlpool tubs. The Doric-columned verdana welcomes guests to the large foyer with a two-story stained-glass window. It is the perfect setting for privacy and comfort - a welcome change of pace to relax, unwind, and enjoy homemade gourmet food in a friendly environment.

For a completely different experience, you should visit the beautiful old hipped roof barn that the noted architectural firm Cooper-Lecky transformed into a luxurious two-suite guesthouse. Dramatic architecture invites you into the living room with a stone fireplace. Upstairs a wonderful two-story solarium separates the two bedrooms with a balcony that looks downstairs. The solarium features a comfortable sitting area and writing desk. In the evening a full moon is captured in the huge picture windows. It is a wonderful place to catch the morning sunrise over the mountains or read a book from the barn’s extensive library. Sarita Long and Helen Smith were best friends and had lunch every day at Tanglewood for amost a half a century. The Helen and Sarita Suites offer light-filled rooms, queen-sized beds, vaulted ceilings and private marble baths with skylights. The rooms also feature huge interior windows which look down on the first floor and its large stone fireplace.

Tanglewood is famous for serving a generous breakfast/brunch that leaves guests asking for recipes and wanting to return and visit us again. Everything we serve is homemade, baked fresh in the morning using local and organic ingredients.
A typical breakfast at Tanglewood starts with a cup of freshly ground Hawaiian coffee, lattes, fruit juice, and fresh fruit of the season: in the spring and summer fresh berries and melons; in the fall, baked local apples in Grand Marnier; in the winter, fresh citrus.
A large basket might be filled with buttery homemade buttermilk Scottish scones or banana bread filled with pecans or muffins packed with blueberries.
A large quiche with farm fresh eggs, delightful cheese, cream and other fresh additions await you on the buffet. Asparagus or another fresh vegetable might be nearby. A lighter-than-air homemade waffle might be prepared while you wait with fork in hand and maple syrup and melted butter at the ready. Local sausage, Virginia ham, smoked Scottish salmon or extra thick bacon might be accompanying the main course. On the side there is always a special dish – such as Tanglewood hash brown potatoes or delectable French baker’s potatoes.
We love hungry guests who appreciate wonderful food. Espresso, lattes and cappuccino are available along with tea, hot chocolate and coffee in the main house.
