General InformationMinutes to LL Bean! Built in 1772, the Royalsborough Inn at the Bagley House has a colorful and interesting history. The house, the oldest in town, was built by Capt. O. Israel Bagley, one of the first settlers of “the town of Royalsborough” (now called Durham),. The house was the site of many firsts – the first worship service in town took place in it on February 23, 1774, the first public town meetings, and children were taught here until a schoolhouse could be built. Capt. O. Israel Bagley, also opened the area's first store here, and his "public house" served as the center of town in the days of the Revolutionary War. The house was also the home of the Bliss family for over 176 years as a dairy farm. In 1982 the Burns family bought the house at auction. The house was painstakingly restored, literally from the ground up. By preserving the history and heritage of the house, it once again became a place to welcome travelers, as Capt. Bagley had intended.
The house today consists of the main structure and an attached ell; a living room with working fireplace greets arriving guests. The adjoining library offers an extensive array of books, magazines and games. Adjacent to the living room is our newly converted sparoom. Therapeutic massage and other treatments are availbale by appointment. In the ell is the country kitchen with its wide pine floors, hand-hewn beams and beehive oven.
Seven guest rooms, each furnished with antiques or beautifully crafted custom pieces, feature hand-sewn quilts, and private baths. Five rooms have queen-sized bed, 1 has a king-sized bed, and one has a double and 3/4 bed-ideal for 3 adults or families. Comforters, individually controlled room heat, thick and thirsty towels, fluffy robes, all add to the comfort of each room. The atmosphere at The Royalsborough Inn at the Bagley House is quiet, relaxed and welcoming to all visitors. It is a non-smoking inn. Wireless Internet is available throughout the Inn.
