Waianuhea (cool, soft fragrance, as of upland forests) provides soothing, peaceful, and luxurious accommodations while combining a sense of remote retreat with modern convenience and sumptuous furnishings. Experience our staff’s warm aloha and dedication to your comfort and relaxation. Sleep in comfy, cozy beds with soft to the touch sheets. Be served a full breakfast and fresh hot coffee while gazing at the summit of Mauna Kea. Enjoy a picnic on the grounds or fix yourself a light lunch from our meal and snack bar. Curl up with a good book, watch a current or classic DVD in your room, play a game of checkers. Peruse our little gift shop. Go out for a hike or bike ride, just out the driveway. Come back to your private oasis and soak in the tub or meet up with other guests at the eight-person spa. Schedule a massage or facial. Find company and conversation at wine hour along with delicious wines and pupus. Drive to Waimea for world class dining or have a private dinner catered in your room. In the evening, you’ll find your room tidied and the bed turned down (with a special treat) in preparation for your restful sleep.

A’ala (“Sweet-smelling, royal”) lives up to its name: it is our sweet yet royal room, decorated in a different style than the rest of the bedrooms. A hand painted wrought iron queen bed is the centerpiece of this delightful little room. Shades of lavender and blue grace the walls of the bedroom as well as the bath. A view of the ocean as well as one of the lily pond can be seen from A’ala’s windows. This room has the distinction of having its own private entry stairway as well as access from inside the house.

Olu’olu (“pleasant, nice, contented”) is done in wall shades of soft bluish-green with rich blue oriental rugs. A mission style queen cherry bed is ready to take the weary traveler off into cozy sleep, while a comfy blue armchair awaits the book reader or relaxer. Outside the window are hapu’u, the tree ferns whose new shoots give us our logo, and a delightful view of the top of Mauna Kea on a clear morning. The bath in Olu’olu has a spacious shower and lovely deep green fixtures.

Li’ol’io (‘brilliant”) is full of light and airiness with its shades of gold and yellow. A four poster cherry king bed, two armchairs, and a gas fireplace make this a most comfortable room. Li’oli’o has a private balcony that faces the ocean or makai side. One of the favorite features of this room is the bathroom with its large soaking tub (big enough for two!) and open shower.

Malamalama (“Enlightenment”) is the largest room in the main house. It is a king junior suite complete with cherry sleigh bed, an armchair (which the owner calls her favorite chair in the house), and a twin sleeper sofa. The furnishings are shades of deep green, while the walls are a lighter green topped by a surprising sky blue ceiling. The bath is done in white tile with blue-green rope tile trim and features a large soaking tub, a glass-enclosed shower, and a separate water closet. There are lovely views from all windows of this room.

Kaulana Akea (“Spacious resting place”) is our full suite and most spacious accommodation. It is located out of the main section of the house thus providing the most privacy. The bedroom is done in shades of wine and earth tones with a king-size cherry sleigh bed. The living room has a buttery soft Italian leather sofa that makes up into a queen sleeper, as well as a table and chairs for four. A wood-burning stove warms the suite on chilly winter nights. Kaulana Akea is ideal for a family or several adults traveling together.

Stayed with my husband and was his first time in a B&B. Waianuhea rivaled the service of any 5 star hotel. The beds and rooms were so cozy it was hard to get out in the morning to go have the most delicious and beautiful breakfast. The complimentary evening wine and pupu hour was fabulous with delicious food. The extra amenities of the extensive DVD library, complimentary slippers, cozy robes and warm fire were wonderful touches. The location is so romantic and really shows you a different side of Hawaii. I love that they are very eco conscious. We will definitely stay here again any chance we get since we live on the Big Island.

My wife and I have stayed at Waianuhea seven times now and, needless to say, we love the place. It is set apart, peaceful and tranquil, well off the beaten tourist tract, in the quiet upland forests and farmlands of the the Hamakua district of the Big Island. The property is nicely landscaped with tropical flowers, a hot tub, extensive grounds, and a pond. The inn itself is gorgeous inside with wood floors, original art on the walls, fresh flowers everywhere, Balinese statues, and a spacious and well-appointed great room where evening hors d'oeuvres and wine are served at 5 PM. Both the hors d'oeuvres and the gourmet 3 course breakfast in the morning are filling and absolutely delicious. There being only 4 guest rooms, it is never crowded, never impersonal, and the staff seem more like helpful friends than employees. It is a wonderful place to kick back and relax and very romantic for couples. We are always excited to arrive there and sad to leave. George Wilson
