We have 14 double-occupancy guest rooms (max. 30 people), and can host sit-down dinners for up to 25 (30 for buffet-style dinners) in our dining room. You can rent the whole Inn from $1499/night, or just the 8 guest rooms on the 2nd floor for $799/night, and add dinners at the Inn from $40/per person (+ tax & 18% gratuity). Our Theatre (a copy of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre!) is availabe for summer events,including weddings, receptions, live-music concerts, and fundraisers. We have a crib/child bed and highchair available, as well. Well-behaved pets (with their owners) are always welcome, and there are tons of great places to romp, including a big field right next to the inn! (We have two happy dogs- Tiger & Lady!) The Inn has a pet cleaning fee of $25 per guest room, and pets must remain leashed while on our property. Owners are responsible for whatever their pets do. | African-American History | | 02/19/07 - 12/31/10 | The Elkhorn Inn & Theatre in Landgraff, West Virginia, is minutes from the first (and only remaining) memorial to African-American soldiers of WWI: the newly restored Kimball World War I Memorial Building in Kimball, WV.
1,500 of the 400,000 African-American soldiers that served in WWI (50,000 of them overseas) came from McDowell County, West Virginia, a center of coal mining and railroading. African-American soldiers served with distinction, demonstrating valor in combat together with French Forces, and 171 were awarded the Croix de Guerre for "gallantry in action". 1,300 were commissioned as officers for their service during WWI. The Kimball World War I Memorial Building was designed by Hassell Hicks, a Great War veteran and McDowell County native. It was a focal point of community life here for decades, serving as a multi-purpose facility hosting high school proms, wedding receptions, performances by Cab Calloway and other well-known entertainers of the day, etc, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. It was recently restored and reopened as an all-purpose community center that builds on the African-American, military, and mining history of our community as a base for tourism and education. Like the Elkhorn Inn, the Kimball WWI Memorial is on West Virginia's "Coal Heritage Trail". The center just hosted an event on Martin Luther King Day, and more events are planned.
