My husband and I came to Charleston for my birthday. Our four-year-old daughter and my elderly parents accompanied us. Many B&Bs of this calibre are not happy about young children - we were made as welcome as if they had been waiting all week for us. A teddy bear (to keep) waited on our daughter's extremely comfortable bed in our lovely room. The bathrooms were large, beautifully done and immaculate (hard to do good bathrooms in old houses but they've managed it). The massage at the spa was blissful. Service was unparalleled: our host really was a host. The young people helping on the desk are charming, knowledgeable and highly presentable. They are students at the university and know the town well so they can advise on what to see and where to go. One of them, on his own initiative, decorated our room with tealights and champagne when he discovered it was my birthday. A wonderful surprise! The dining room is pleasant and well served, though the young waiter was rather less well turned out than the people in the main house. The food is well-cooked but dated - tiny portions marooned in huge plates. My father ordered a sampler dessert of featuring three different dishes served in tiny ramekins but with full sized cutlery, which reminded us of the "It's like elf food ..." advertisement. However, he said they were very good once he had managed to wrestle them out of the dollhouse sized containers with his giant spoon and fork. I feel ungracious criticising the menu and presentation because everyone tried so hard to look after us! If it hadn't been for the huge bill, it really would have been like staying as a guest with outstandingly hospitable friends - and it was worth every penny! The most professional service I've experienced anywhere. If you've read Handling Sin, this was rather like staying with Mr Van Der Host (And we loved Charleston too).

The Wentworth Mansion is a well-maintained, beautiful old mansion with impeccable service. Our room was more than we expected but the walk through the College of Charleston can be tricky at night. No real street lights and crumbling sidewalks. This wouldn't prevent me from returning, though.
