John Rutledge House Inn

  • Inn Details

Built in 1763 by John Rutledge, a signer of the U.S. Constitution, this is one of the only fifteen homes belonging to those signers to survive, and the only one to now accommodate overnight guests. Beautifully restored, the John Rutledge House Inn re-creates the experience of Colonial Charleston each afternoon as tea is served in the ballroom where the presidents and patriots have met. Rates include breakfast served in the guest room or in our courtyard and evening turndown service with Godiva chocolates. Guests may choose from rooms and suites in the main house or in one of the Inn's two carriage houses. AAA Four-Diamond rating. Charter member of Historic Hotels of America.

Oh, such a nice place to stay, enjoyed the afternoon drinks and nibbles, evening Brandy was so good - and all for free. Rooms were excellent, breakfast was a highlight. So close to middle of town, neighbourhood was full of interesting houses, so close to dining. We enjoyed our stay

We enjoyed watching the goings-on of the town from the balcony off the dining area while drinking our coffee in the mornings!

The photo of JR house does NOT do it justice. The house has symmetrical staircases leading to the front porch and door (unfortunately, the original iron entry gates to these staircases have gone missing). The upper veranda is accessed through the ballroom. Simply being in the ballroom and on the veranda gave me chills, and I could see the parties of long ago. The antiques/decor add so much to the reality of being amongst pre-civil war, genteel southern society. Upon arriving at the Inn, I decided to stay in a carriage house (instead of the main house). My room was period-decorated, CLEAN, and private. My carriage house window looked out to the beautiful courtyard. I was able to park my rental car behind the courtyard (easy access and not seen from the courtyard). The hostesses had extensive knowledge of Charleston sites. I enjoyed blueberry muffins and coffee delivered to my room each morning. My stay was several days, and I changed rooms once just for fun - I did not have any discomforts - air conditioning, plumbing, and breakfast all worked like a charm! Allison, St. Louis
