ALFAMA is the oldest and one of the most typical districts of the city of Lisbon. Currently, it includes the parishes of São Miguel, Santo Estevao and São Vicente de Fora. Its name derives from the Arabic "alfa maa" which means "the thousand sources. To the west of Alfama stand the two towers of the Cathedral of Lisbon. The dome of the National Pantheon and the Igreja de Santa Engracia and the facade of Igreja de Sao Vicente de Fora dominate the skyline north-east.
