The Chatelaine B&B

This inn, while very easy to find, is in the countryside just outside State College and a step back in time. The owners are very gracious hosts and cook up an amazing breakfast. We found the rooms to be large and comfortable and totally suited our needs. We were definately pleased with the accomodation and will stay there again when visiting State College

Mae and Amanda were great hostesses. We enjoyed our stay. Room was alittle warm.

PSU homecoming weekend at The Chatelaine B&B was wonderful!

Very nice, Victorian home in the bucolic country. It is 10 min away from downtown State College and all the action, but in a wonderful country setting. Owners are very accomodating and provide excellent accomodations. Highly recommend!

We loved the Chatelaine, and adored our innkeepers, Mae and Amanda! I think the only thing we missed were enough plugs for computers and such. A couple of power strips in the bedroom would have been fantastic. Otherwise we were thrilled with our stay!

We loved having this delightful couple, and feel so saddened that we failed to pull the power strip out of a bureau drawer. Usually it is beneath the glass-topped table, plugged in and waiting for added uses. We would love to have listened to our lady singing. But happily supplied a folding snack table in the Sitting Room for our gentleman's use, not knowing he might have preferred a power strip in his own room. Come again, folks, and we will do a better job. It was pure pleasure for us. Mae

We have stayed at several B & B's in the past but The Chatelaine is by far our favorite. Mae and Mandy are great hosts, the house is beautifully decorated and the breakfasts are amazing!

These folks have visited us before, and this was a solemn occasion for them and their local family members. It had been a few years since we had their company, but once we started talking about family past times, there was lots to share. What an interesting surname with the story of its beginning. I have stayed in many bed and breakfast's before but this was my bf's first time so it was important to me that it be a wonderful experience for the both of us, especially him. We traveled from Philly to State College for my bf's for the State College Arts festival Race. He graduated from Penn State so it was always an exciting time for him to go back and visit and I found The Chatelaine and thought this place and the Swan room would be perfect for us. Mandy and Mae were both wonderful hostess and welcomed us both to they're home! The pics that they show online for the Swan room did not do it any justice! It was absolutely beautiful and my boyfriend was so happy and very satisfied with the room and privacy that they gave us, especially since he is a shy and private person. The only 2 minor disagreements we had was we wished there was more of a variety at breakfast, however it was delicious what they choose to serve us and we noticed that everytime we stepped out someone came into the room to either turn the A/C down or provide service. We greatly apprciated the room service BUT he is hot all of the time; hence he is a long distance runner and he and I both are private people so a notice of someone stepping in when we stepped out would have been appreciated. Other than that, we would recommend this bed and breakfast to anyone and we will most likely be staying here again in the near future!

We were delighted to have this young couple as our only guests on this weekend. And we are truly sorry for their "disagreement." Concerning our limited breakfast offerings, a B&B is not a restaurant and we create a menu of juice, a fresh fruit dish, a main dish with meat on the side, hot breads (Popovers perhaps), a Sweet Ending like Coffee Cake made from scratch unless the main dish is our Iconic Croissant French Toast Farci. We always offer coffees, teas, decaf and happily make all choices. We have cold drinks in a hamper upstairs for refreshment and will always make cofee or tea at anytime. Ice goes into the bucket and a good water goes into a glass pitcher instead of expecting folks to use tap water. As for the Service, I have never heard of Too Much. We are careful not to disturb folks in their rooms, but we do empty waste baskets and take all damp and used towels and cloths to the laundry, though the trend these days is to Go Green and ask folks to use their towels over again. I think the great thing about a good Getaway is fresh towels, fluffed and gently folded and used only once. I cannot imagine that Mandy turned the AC down, for it has been so very hot of late. We now have every AC turned on, with doors open to hallways if no one is using the room. It keeps the whole house cooler that way. By their own words Mandy did not enter their room when they were present, nor disturb their privacy in any way. It truly never occurred to us to post a note that we would be attending to their needs while they were absent. We feel our breakfasts are more imaginative than what most folks would demand if they had their way. No toast here. Just bacon and eggs? How dull. I won't serve them our French Toast again, nor the second morning's offering, if I can recall what it was. My synapses are failing me these days. 99&44/100% of the time I love what I do for everyone. We recently stayed at the beautiful Chatelaine for 2 nights while visiting our Penn State daughter. This was our second stay and both times were outstanding. Mae is a wonderful host and an excellent cook. She makes sure we have everything we need including complimentary soda "pop" at night. The rooms are huge and the fireplace is nice and warm and a perfect touch after a damp chilly day. The beds and pillows are so comfortable. After trying a number of other places over the years, The Chatelaine is our first choice when in State College.

It was good to see these folks again as they came to visit their Penn State daughter and take part in a 5K Walk/Run for Autism. The weather was not what I would have chosen, but all in all, it was not too bad. They had the fireplace in their room which does wonders to take the chill off guests with outings on their agenda. We had Croissant French Toast Farci and Spinach Gateau on separate mornings. Bagels with Cream Cheese and Lox supplemented the Gateau (a quiche without a crust.) There was a coffee cake pie, if I have not forgotten. I know I was trying to redo that oldtime icon, Mock Apple Pie from WW11 days. (Crust, Ritz Crackers, lots of sugarsyrup and lemon juice to fake you out.) If I do it again I will use applecider and less sugar instead of the watery syrup. At any rate, they asked for the recipe, so it must have been palatable. You can google anything these days. Come again folks, and thanks for the lovely review. Love, Mae

The Chatelaine B&B is a lovely inn just a short, easy drive from Penn State. Our room was beautiful and comfortable, and our hostesses were very pleasant and helpful - we got two great recommendations for dinner. Both days, our breakfasts were truly gourmet. We had a very enjoyable time and I would definitely stay there again.

We are too spoiled by over the top raves, so that 2 out of 5 ranking only 4 out of 5 sets us wondering where we failed completely. Service! We try between the two of us. I get up early for the kitchen duty. Mandy stays up late to greet and re-greet guests. Did I miss something with breakfast service. (I DO tend to chat when there are only 3 of us at the table, forgetting to refill cups or mugs at times.)Did Mandy omit the offer of ice at night? Value? Well the Swan Room is our premiere room. We are within the parameters of our local colleagues. Cleanliness!!! That's the rub. What was missing there. We monitored the newly encroaching Ladybugs before folks arrived, as we always do, because those critters cannot be sealed out ever, and the season is just starting. Found a few and Susan responded that she saw a couple later. I rechecked and she must have done them in herself!!! I know the bath and room were dusted, vacumned and disinfected ahead of time. We are anxious for warmer weather so we can do some simple sanding and repainting of woodwork, but it is too cold to start that now. We are sorry not to be the very best possible. And promise to keep on trying. Hope for a second chance.

I haven't stayed at a nicer place, and Mandy and Mae went out of their way to accommodate my vegan diet. They made vegan muffins that were unbelievable. It's hard to see how it could get any better.

These delightful folks came as Ultra-Marathoners and needed an early carb-right breakfast. The vegan diet sent us to Google where we found how much fun that challenge can be. The muffins were delicious to all of us, and we will keep investigating other options. It is really no big deal to have soy or other special milks on hand for vegan breads, etc. Doing without eggs was no sacrifice either. But the big PLUS was spending time with such delightful guests. Can hardly wait for the next marathon---a 50 miler, at that.

The Chatelaine B&B is outstanding. My wife and I were fortunate enough to find a room at The Chatelaine for a last minute get away for a long needed rest. It was such a wonderful surprise! Ron and Bernice were pure delights, though they certainly needed a reprieve from their workaday world. Mandy and I feared they were in too much stress to relax, but a happier time could never have been shared. They are innkeeper wannabees, and we know they have what it takes and a nifty house they have crafted themselves. Their report is funnier than they were with its reference to our stairwell drawings. All hail to charming folks like the Makibbins.

We seldom have Sunday thru Monday guests and it was so nice to have the time to focus especially on them. Glad they loved the rare Buckwheat honey, and so sorry that our market did not have more for a gift. Comb honey from our Taits Farm Market was a close second, and I hope they really will frame the painting of the 3 Ladies Sculpture in Boalsburg. They are history buffs, and nature lovers (went to see the Raptors at Shavers Creek). Hope they come again and that Buck brings an example of his Quilting. B&B, Buck and Barbara!

Will try hard to upgrade the features that this young couple found less than perfect. Maybe a Ladybug or two slipped in or some such detail that we failed to notice. The Swan Room is usually the delight of those lucky enough to stay there by its fireplace. I know they love candles which are sort of like smoking, a no no here where we have had two fires in years gone by. We'll try harder to explain things next time.

Mae and Her Daughter provide excellent food, accomodations and service with their wonderful Bed and Breakfast, the Chatelaine, in Pine Grove Mills right outside of State College, PA. The biggest thing I can tell anyone staying there is that you will feel like you are part of Mae's family as soon as you knock on the door. The innkeepers are as elegant and classy as the wonderful house that they have had as a landmark in the community for so many years. The attention to detail in your rooms, and the immaculate condition of the house from the rooms to the various antiques is outstanding. The breakfast that we were served was also second to none. In closing, for the price and excellent quality this is a value that is second to none, I highly recommend that if you are in the area of Penn State, treat yourself and stay at the Chatelaine. - Jason

Fifteen+ years ago our daughter who was a student at Penn State, discovered The Chatelaine. We booked in for a football weekend and have never left. The Chatelaine is our"home way from home" in Happy Valley. Football games for us always include staying at this grand, charming historical home run so graciously by Innkeepers Mae and Mandy. Our daughter was married at Penn State and our memories include the wonderful weekend our family spent at The Chatelaine. This is definitely "a most special B&B." We have been visiting every autumn for over 20 years...sometimes 4 or 5 times a season. As we leave our Capitol Hill home and fast-paced Washington, DC life, we slowly unwind and eagerly anticipate our arrival at "our second home" where we know serenity and rejuvenescence await us. Innkeepers Mae and Amanda, the other guests (some old friends and some new ones to be made), and the terrific farmhouse will all guarantee another special weekend.
