A lovely warm welcome awaits guests arriving at Carlisle House. The beds are the most comfortable I have slept in anywhere. The breakfasts are wonderful and every preference is catered for as far as humanly possible. I have just returned from my 3rd visit and am already looking forward to my 4th visit in 2014. Alan and Mary Duxbury are wonderful hosts and run a superb Guest House. Chris Couldridge, Somerset, UK.

My husband and I stayed 2 nights at the Carlisle House. Mary and Allan were gracious and welcoming. From our warm welcome at the front door, to assistance with our luggage, and every amenity in between (and I mean every amenity), our stay was heaven. Our room was cozy and comfortable and the linens felt like silk. Breakfast was extraordinary and the conversation delightful. We will definitely return to Carlisle, and will only stay at the Carlisle House.

As the original front parlor, a remarkable feature of the room is the Ben Franklin type fireplace insert which warmed the home much more efficiently than just a fireplace. This stove, the marbleized slate mantle, 11 foot ceilings with both crown and chair moldings lend an appropriate period touch to the decor of this dramatic room. For your comfort, this room has been equipped with a burl wood four poster king size bed, ensuite double size Jacuzzi bath and a private half bath with a double sink vanity.

With Carlisle history so closely tied to its namesake in the Cumberland County in the northwest of England, it is only fitting to remember Carlisle’s background and Alan's Duxbury family history. The English Library was the second of the formal parlors in the home. The room features beautiful encased book shelves to either side of the fireplace. Ten foot doors under 11 foot ceilings highlight the side of the room next to the queen size sleigh bed. A separate half bath with double vanity accompanies an ensuite double Jacuzzi which can be enjoyed under chandelier light.

This spacious front bedroom on the second floor is the jewel of the home and was the bedroom of the Ewing twins in the “new” part of the home built in the 1820s. The room (walls and ceiling) was papered with the present rose design in the 1930s when the boys were in grade school. The wide plank yellow pine floorboards highlight the scrollwork on the queen size bed. The adjoining bathroom features the early 1900s floor tiles and claw foot bathtub with shower.

Unlike a typical hotel or motel, Carlisle House rooms are individually furnished to fit the history of both the home and Historic Carlisle, PA. This second floor room was the bedroom of Jessie Ewing from 1927 until she left the home in 1965. It features painted yellow pine flooring, original lighting fixtures and a coal fireplace. Jessie would have loved the beaded “cameo” queen size bed and warm pale green colors and flowers of the room. It is said her presence has been felt in the room as she watches benignly over her home. The adjoining bathroom has the early 1900’s dogwood wallpaper.

4.8 out of 5Warm friendly Inn keepers, great food, convenient location
May 29, 2012
My stay in early May, 2012 at the Carlisle House was wonderful. Mary & Alan were gracious and helpful Innkeepers with tips for things to do and places to eat locally. I was there doing genealogy research and they shared some of the history of the house and of Carlisle. I particularly enjoyed the breakfast served. It was delicious with homemade baked goods and quiche daily....hard to stay on my diet this week--too many tempting treats to pass up. I will definitely stay at the Carlisle House again when I am in the area and would recommend the B&B to friends.
