As the original front parlor, a remarkable feature of the room is the Ben Franklin type fireplace insert which warmed the home much more efficiently than just a fireplace. This stove, the marbleized slate mantle, 11 foot ceilings with both crown and chair moldings lend an appropriate period touch to the decor of this dramatic room. For your comfort, this room has been equipped with a burl wood four poster king size bed, ensuite double size Jacuzzi bath and a private half bath with a double sink vanity.
With Carlisle history so closely tied to its namesake in the Cumberland County in the northwest of England, it is only fitting to remember Carlisle’s background and Alan's Duxbury family history. The English Library was the second of the formal parlors in the home. The room features beautiful encased book shelves to either side of the fireplace. Ten foot doors under 11 foot ceilings highlight the side of the room next to the queen size sleigh bed. A separate half bath with double vanity accompanies an ensuite double Jacuzzi which can be enjoyed under chandelier light.
As part of the original home built in the late 1700s, the room is named for one of the early owners and features a grand fireplace and wall cabinets to either side. The chandelier enhances the 11 foot ceiling, the beautiful original moldings and wood fireplace mantle. The burl wood four poster queen size bed with luxurious bedding ensures your comfort. The room includes a private shower.
This spacious front bedroom on the second floor is the jewel of the home and was the bedroom of the Ewing twins in the “new” part of the home built in the 1820s. The room (walls and ceiling) was papered with the present rose design in the 1930s when the boys were in grade school. The wide plank yellow pine floorboards highlight the scrollwork on the queen size bed. The adjoining bathroom features the early 1900s floor tiles and claw foot bathtub with shower.
Unlike a typical hotel or motel, Carlisle House rooms are individually furnished to fit the history of both the home and Historic Carlisle, PA. This second floor room was the bedroom of Jessie Ewing from 1927 until she left the home in 1965. It features painted yellow pine flooring, original lighting fixtures and a coal fireplace. Jessie would have loved the beaded “cameo” queen size bed and warm pale green colors and flowers of the room. It is said her presence has been felt in the room as she watches benignly over her home. The adjoining bathroom has the early 1900’s dogwood wallpaper.
Named for Carlisle’s heroine Mary Hays McCauly, commonly known as Molly Pitcher, the large third floor room front windows look out toward the old Carlisle Graveyard in which she is buried. It features two decorative queen size iron beds enhanced with Laura Ashley “Bramble” accessories and soft cherry furniture. A private bath (shower) adjoins the room.
The Hydrangea Room is a cozy double bed room with its own private entrance and a door to the balcony for relaxing outside. It features a ceiling fan and a private bathroom with spa jetted shower. In addition, there is a loft room with a twin bed.
One of our two new accommodations, the Bailey Suite is a full apartment with 670 square feet of space and separate exterior entrance. It features a full kitchen, dining room, living room, bedroom with queen bed and daybed, and a private bath room.
Our newest area, the Hayes Suite, is located in the Faller House, immediately adjacent to the Carlisle House. Named for Alan's family in England, the Hayes Suite has two bedrooms with a connecting door, and a private bath room with glass enclosed shower and European style vanity. The first room opens to soft mauve carpet and a burl wood four poster queen bed enhanced by elegant Raymond Waites "Savanah Garden" floral blue bedding. The adjacent sterling blue bedroom features a fluted iron queen bed with deep red bedding and acorn brown carpet giving a warm glow to the room.

We just stayed for the second time at the Carlisle House but it won't be our last visit! Everything about this B&B is lovely and welcoming. The Innkeepers/Owners, Mary and Alan, are a delightful couple and extremely helpful in suggesting restaurants (of which there are many!), sights to see, events at Dickinson College, and all things Carlisle, PA. The breakfasts are delicious and the atmosphere conducive to lingering over just one more cuppa!

Absolutely fantastic place in Carlisle, PA. Mary and Alan were extremely gracious hosts and the quiche Alan prepared at breakfast will not soon be forgotten. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a comfortable B&B while exploring central Pennsylvania.

A lovely warm welcome awaits guests arriving at Carlisle House. The beds are the most comfortable I have slept in anywhere. The breakfasts are wonderful and every preference is catered for as far as humanly possible. I have just returned from my 3rd visit and am already looking forward to my 4th visit in 2014. Alan and Mary Duxbury are wonderful hosts and run a superb Guest House. Chris Couldridge, Somerset, UK.

My husband and I stayed 2 nights at the Carlisle House. Mary and Allan were gracious and welcoming. From our warm welcome at the front door, to assistance with our luggage, and every amenity in between (and I mean every amenity), our stay was heaven. Our room was cozy and comfortable and the linens felt like silk. Breakfast was extraordinary and the conversation delightful. We will definitely return to Carlisle, and will only stay at the Carlisle House.
