Portland's White House

We stayed in the balcony room. It was great we were really excited about the six headed shower but the pressure was very low and two of the heads just dripped. When another room used their shower while we used ours all the shower heads turned into a drizzel. The food was great. About a three block walk to the main road there re two coffee chops. One on the corner and the other to the left we went to the one to the left the coffee prices we low the coffee was great and it was not as crowded as the other one. The cookies and truffles they give you at the B&B are a very tasty touch to a very nice place to stay.

We had a fabulous stay at the White House. Our room with jacuzzi tub was fantastic. Breakfast in the morning was wonderful! We will be returning.

A grand and historic house in a neighborhood of lovely old homes. The food was great. A huge breakfast at a shared table in a big dining room, and cookies and chocolates in the room. An easy walk to a commercial district, or an easy drive to downtown. A cozy and charming inn, much better than a sterile hotel. We enjoyed our stay and would come back.

I use this B&B every time I am in Portland for business. Needless to say, I feel very much at home here; I'm always made to feel very welcome. I plan my workouts and my eating to accomodate the incredible breakfasts.

This was our third stay at the Whitehouse and will not be our last. Everything was just perfect. The location to a nice walk with great restaurants and shops add to enjoyment. The rooms are comfortable and well appointed. The breakfasts are sumptuous and really set you up for the day. They have to make the best cookies ever.

We enjoyed a wonderful, cozy stay at the Whitehouse Inn. The Inn keepers were so welcoming and helpful in giving area recommendations. We will definitely keep this B&B in mind for future trips to Portland and recommend it to friends!

We were greeted by Prescott, a white scottie who showed us to our room! The gracious innkeepers made us feel right at home, including granting our request to take Prescott for a walk. Excellent breakfasts which changed each day. Beautiful common rooms.

Our room was well appointed, and featured white terry robes and great cookies and chocolates. The bed was comfortable, with nice linens and pillows. The bathroom was small but well done, so it all worked. The building itself is quite spectacular, as can be seen from the pictures. The neighborhood is quiet, with a number of restaurants within walking distance. Even though it was a bit damp, we walked to a good Thai place for dinner. We visited in November, so we expected rain. Breakfast consisted of individual Dutch Baby pancakes, plus bacon. Since we don't eat bacon, the meal seemed delicious but scant. Maybe we're just big eaters, but we would have enjoyed some fruit or additional offerings in place of the meat. Each party chooses the time they will come down to breakfast and notes it on the board in the entry. Since most of us elected 8:30 (breakfast is served until 9), a number of strangers sat down at a single table for breakfast. We eventually got a conversation going, but it was a bit uncomfortable. Children are allowed, and we had a couple of charming but noisy little ones staying next door. If you wake easily, bring a white noise generator. There might have been one in the room, but we missed it. The innkeepers are a mixed pair. Our hostess seemed charming, but our host was a bit less gracious, and he's the one with whom we had the most contact. For instance, while she invited everyone to sit wherever they wanted, he came in and rearranged folks to accomodate later parties. Similarly, his presentation about their procedures made us feel awkward. When I asked a question without having listened to his whole spiel, I was asked to wait. This B&B was nice, but we'll probably try someplace else when we next come to Portland.

This was just a wonderful place to stay. Service was fantastic. On quiet little street with a soothing and calming atmosphere and and interior. Very well maintained, innkeepers were perfect.

Portland's White House is a beautiful house, lovely neighborhood, with a welcoming atmosphere. Breakfasts were totally outstanding. Room was so nice and very comfortable. I would highly recommend to everyone.

Beautiful Inn (very grand) and very friendly and easy-going innkeepers. I have nothing negative to say and I will be staying here again. My wife and I have a favorite room so we are keeping it secret.

Stayed 3 nights in Carolina room in carriage house. Beautiful room, comfy bed, very clean, yummy treats left every day for me from innkeepers. Owner and innkeepers very friendly and accomodating. Loved little Prescott, the innkeepers Scottie dog.

Loved it, it's worth visiting Portland just to stay there. Terrific and unusual breakfast, great little extras like homemade cookies and Moonstruck chocolates, all in a setting that feels like something out of the Roaring Twenties that looks as great as the photos.

We really enjoyed our stay! Very cozy and had a romantic feel. If you like antiques there are lots of beautiful pieces to look at. The staff were very friendly. We loved the delicious cookies and chocolates left in the room every night! Very nice touch!

Everyone was very accommodating. The house is in a nice, walkable neighborhood and parking was not an issue.

Portland's White House has our complete endorsment. We had a wonderful stay. The staff was courteous and helpfull and greeted us with homemade cookies upon our arrival. We asked for a dinner recommendation and had one of the best meals of our trip only blocks from the White House and for around 40 dollars for 2! We were allowed to explore the building and use the livingroom to read and relax. The bedroom was nothing short of amazing with a chandelier over our bed and antiques, pottery, stained glass were only a few things that adorned the home. Our room was quiet so we rested well. The television provided had full cable service. Breakfast in the morning was as described, a gourmet treat of fresh orange juice, great coffee, a bowl of fresh fruit and an egg fritatta. Every effort was made to be sure the guest were comfortable and happy. We have stayed at many large chain hotels including the Ritz Carlton and the JW Marriott. There is much to say about those hotels but the customer service and personal attention at the White House beats them all! Thanks White House...we'll be back!

Room (Baron's suite) was amazing; especially the oatmeal-chocolate-chip cookies and moonstruck chocolates next to the enormous bed. Also, the breakfast (crepes with chicken apple sausage) was delicious and plentiful. I would stay there again FOR SURE.

Wonderful stay- we enjoyed the grandeur of the home, the dining room and appreciated the friendliness of the inn keepers. Gratuity is not included, so if budgeting, keep in mind an additional 'tip' although it's not mandatory... however, once you stay, i think you'll agree that a tip is well deserved.

We love the accommodations at the White House, the neighborhood and we recommend it often. The breakfast and the homemade cookies are fantastic.

My wife and I just stayed here - we chose the "Blarney Room", one of the three rooms in the carriage house. This B&B is spotlessly clean and gorgeously appointed with antiques. The owners really, really care for the place and their guests. The location is great too, in a quiet, safe, historic neighborhood not far from the hot spots of NE Portland. Street parking is plentiful, the gourmet breakfast is truly outstanding - perhaps the best I've ever had in a B&B (and vegans take note: my wife is vegan, and I eat vegetarian, and we were very well taken care of) - and the super-friendly, super-chatty staff bent over backwards for us. Only quibbles: the wall between the Blarney Room and the Carolina Room is thin and we could hear our neighbors pretty clearly. Not much the owners can do about that, so bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper. Also, I'd recommend thicker curtains for our window, as the morning sun woke us up earlier than we wanted! Aside from that, I'd happily stay here again. It's amazingly well-priced for the luxury you get. I highly recommend this place if you are in Portland.

Beautiful building and fun owner/operators. Great breakfasts. We stayed three nights and felt that some simple things would make the stay much more enjoyable. After breakfast there was no access to tea or coffee or nibbles. Access to these things (self serve) 24 hours makes a big difference. Brandy or wine in the sitting room in the early evening would also help. These are things we have come to expect at other B&Bs in this price range. The decoration is over-the-top and not for everyone. Carpets, especially in the entry and on master staircase need cleaning.

My wife & I chose Oregon for our vacation this year and we were not disappointed. We stayed at some of the most wonderful places(Crater Lodge, Timberline and Columbia Gorge Hotel) but our favorite night was at the White House. Great accomodations, friendly host in Kim & Steve and the breakfast was "the best". You will be highly recommended. Joe & Sandra

It was pricey, but worth it. The staff was helpful and friendly. We stayed an extra night. The breakfasts were quite good.

Kim went above and beyond to make everything work. She cleared up a misunderstanding about our arrival date, and our stay was better than expected. Breakfasts were wonderful.

Loved the house and the staff were so welcoming. The dog was very cute too, and the cookies and chocolates a welcome arrival snack!

This is a beautiful house with exquisite furnishings. Lanning and Steve were great hosts. Location is excellent...close to everything and the neighborhood is great for walking.

My husband and I stayed here on oour wedding night in the Chaffeurs quarters, the room was excellent, we loved the champagne chocolates and cookies that were there on our arrival, the tub had 2 shower heads which was so nice and romantic and the bed was huge and confortable. The next morning we had a wonderful breakfast, it was so big I couldnt even finish it all! Our only complaint was that we wish the walls were thicker...but kind of hard to change that ;)

We were most impressed with Portland's White House. The service, professionalism, and overall experience were outstanding.

Spent a weekend here - the owners are extremely hospitable and did everything to make our stay enjoyable; and we travelled with our 1 year old, so a bonus that a B&B allowed children. Rooms were welcoming, clean (loved the oatmeal cookies!) and the location was perfect, close to the train to downtown, but also easy to walk everywhere and bars/restaurants/shops within a few blocks. The breakfasts were to die for - the best food we've had - you can't beat it!

My new husband and I spent the first part of our honeymoon in Portland and at Portland'd White House. It was so incredibly relaxing and there were lots of shops and restaurants within walking distance. I would recommend this to any/everyone!

The expresso bar as advertised was not available and there was nowhere to get hot water for tea. Breakfast was also not by candlelight

But staying in the carriage house isn't as nice as the big house.

We were "Wow'd" with our entire experience! The home is absolutely stunning, inside and out. The attention to detail in all aspects was much appreciated. Kim and Steve really enjoy what they do and made our stay so fun and comfortable. We received an excellent recommendation for where to eat dinner and Kim went above and beyond to accomodate my dietary restrictions at breakfast! Thanks again for making our anniversary weekend so special!

We arrived in Portland during our 2 week honeymoon road trip and feel in love with the White House! Lanning was amazing, gave us a complimentary upgrade so we had a beautiful king size bedroom with immaculate bathroom and fresh cookies upon arrival. These cookies are amazing! He gave us extras when we left and I want the recipe! We only stayed one night but it was a heavenly night's sleep and we awoke to a wonderful full breakfast served! The food was one of the best breakfast's we'eve ever had! Cheese blintzes with fresh local berries, blueberry muffins and fresh, hot coffee...I HIGHLY recommend the White House for a romantic stay away from home! The interior spaces of the of the PWH are comfortable, although ornate. We much preferred the cozier, more cheerful Blarney room over the Balcony room, although the space was extremely small and crowded with furniture. The reservation form stated that vegeterian breakfasts were served and vegan choices could be provided. I indicate a vegan preference, but I was served eggs and meat or fish daily. I am used to a simpler, healthier breakfast, but my husband thoroughly enjoyed it. Our primary reason for choosing the PWH was its location which most convenient for our purposes.

The inn was immaculate, and so comfortable! We enjoyed every minute of our stay, especially all the little details like fresh baked cookies on the table each afternoon. It truly felt like coming home after each day's activities.

We took over Portland's White House for a three-day weekend to celebrate our wedding. We filled all the rooms and had at least 16 for breakfast every morning. We had our ceremony in the flower-filled courtyard, and enjoyed the buffet lunch at tables they set up outside, too. The list of things that went well that weekend is very long! Our guests loved their rooms, and talked about the chocolate chip cookies that they enjoyed every day. The food at the buffet for the wedding was exactly what we'd ordered, and was delicious, fresh and beautiful. We had outstanding breakfasts every morning (we stayed for three nights). Adults, kids and teenagers all loved the selection and the flavors. The owner, Lanning, was a perfect wedding organizer - he kept an eye on every detail to make sure it went perfectly. And it did! Kim and Steve kept everything running well, and our families have all commented on how much they enjoyed the weekend. We can't wait to go back and celebrate our first anniversary with a stay at this amazing place - right in the heart of a beautiful neighborhood in Portland! Highly, highly recommend it.

Great public rooms - Living, Dining, Sitting, etc. Our room was very small. Next time we would try for larger room in main house. But we would definately go back! Host a staff were very accomodating. Breakfasts were wonderful.

Our stay at the White House was too short, only 2 days. I would highly recommend this B & B. The owners made you feel like royality, they were very friendly and welcoming. The property and all the landscaping was gorgeous, the bedrooms were fabulous and the food delicious, presentation of food beautiful. The staff went out of their way to make us feel comfortable, extremely helpful with all our questions and even offered to share their dinner with us one night after we had had a long day of sightseeing, I'd say they they were very generous. The whole ambiance was wonderful and we really were sad to leave. Given the opportunity again we wouldn't hesitate to go back and stay longer.

We enjoyed our stay very much. It's a grand old home in a wonderful neighborhood and our room (The Chauffeur) was comfortable (and immaculate). The breakfast alone is worth a stay here. At the suggestion of the owner, we ended up spending a glorious day hiking around waterfalls. We would not have known about it otherwise.The only thing lacking was a box of Kleenex in the room, but I'm sure if I had asked for it, they would have delivered one immediately. Highly recommend.

I hate to write the following, because I would hate to not to get a room here whenever I'm in Portland, but I'll just say it: this is the nicest B&B I've stayed at to date, and my automatic first choice whenever I come to Portland.

I stayed for one night, the room i reserved online was not avaliable but they upgraded my wife and I to the chaffuer quarters which is detatched from the home. Felt like we lost the the feel of it being seperate. Staff was super friendly. Would definitly go back to portland.

stunned by what we found, not expecting such a uniquely eccentric and interesting place to stay. we rarely find food we don't know how to cook and better, but not so here - clearly a keen and creative interest in the place that yields a calm but attentive atmosphere.

We were booked for a very nice room, but were upgraded to a larger room which came as a pleasant surprise. The breakfasts were delicious. My only (slight) concern was the sound of the courtyard fountain at night. Perhaps it could be put on a timer so that it wouldn't need to run midnight to seven a.m.

This is the third time we have stayed here, and each time the people were great, the rooms were outstanding, and the breakfast was superb. Highly recommended peaceful oasis in a fantastic location within Portland.

The room and B&B as a whole were very nice. The location in town is very convient to transit connections and restaurants.

Outstanding. Amazing. Where else can you be treated like family and royalty at the same time?!? Lanning is the greatest - greets us by name and makes everyone in our family feel special. Each room has its own uniqueness. Walking distance from the imax. It is a complete oasis for us. We park the car and never get in again until its time to leave.

The stay at the White house bed and breakfast is by far our most memorable one. The house is extraordinary and the owners have restored it beautifully.The room was tastefully decorated, the bath room was clean, the neighborhood was prestine and quiet, the food was excellent, offered by a couteous staff. The hosts were very friendly and made us feel right at home. The room was clean and comfortable with fluffy pillows and large soft towels. Breakfast in the morning was delicious, and we were able to choose the time we wished to dine. My mother and I had been traveling all weekend long and staying at the White House was the grand finale of our perfect weekend.

Stayed just one night on our way to the coast but would have enjoyed staying longer. Very charming B and B which was very clean. Upon arrival awaiting in our room were fresh cookies and some chocolates which were delicious. Extremely clean overall and the bathroom was modern and immaculate. Our breakfast was excellent and the host was very accomodating. Definitely would stay again. Excellent value for the room rate (we were there in low season).

This is the second time I've stayed here, with a few years intervening. It's strong suit is location; quiet and convenient NE. Other services are adequate. I find it has a cluttered look; jammed with so many antiques that you feel you can't turn around without banging into one, and the advertised wifi is terrible. It is in a nice, interesting neighborhood.

Beautiful B&B! My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent here. We loved our room and the jacuzzi tub that came in it. The breakfast was delicious!!!!!! Attention to little details like yummy chocolates, homemade cookies, and classical music playing in our room upon arrival were very appreciated. After we left, we kept wishing we were still there!

This is an amazing property located in a very quiet and pretty neighborhood. The entire house is filled with antiques, and as a guest, you really get the feeling of being VIP. Breakfast was served formal in the dining room, service was outstanding. The Carolina room that my husband and I stayed at was beautifully decorated and very comfortable. I would definitely recommend this place to others when they visit Portland!

PWH is in a lovely, friendly, old neighborhood of Portland, with huge, beautiful trees, roses and rhododendrons lining the streets, so it's great for walking and being outside. Our room (the chauffeur's quarters) was old-world elegant and immaculate, cozy/somewhat small, with luxurious bedding and a beautiful bathroom. Food was served beautifully and very generously, with daily homemade cookies and chocolates a nice, welcoming extra. There's a charming parlor and living room with piano, games at tables, and comfortable sofas for relaxing. Our daughter and granddaughter live next door and were welcomed over for breakfast, and our granddaughter loved playing an African drum in the parlor. Lanning, the owner, and Kim and Steve, inn keepers, were all easy-going, gracious and professional hosts. I look forward to staying at PWH again when we visit our daughter in Portland.

Our second visit and it was even better than the first! Lovely rooms, great service, wonderful food, good company at breakfast and a very relaxed atmosphere. We'll be back soon.

The room was right out of a turn of the century magazine. Other than a few modern items, the original owners from 1912 had just stepped out for awhile. Getting used to a taller bed was a small learning curve, but once there you didn't want to leave, even though you knew breakfast was going to be special. Not only does Lannning take pride in the house, but so do his caretakers. Kuddos all around for maintaing this slice of heaven!

The innkeepers were lovely and personable. They even upgraded us to a nicer room for no extra charge. We loved being immersed in the antique charm of this b&b, and the neighbourhood was a wonderful place to walk around. We were so happy we stumbled upon this place.

This is a beautiful facility. The Canopy Room had everything one could want including champagne, chocolats and cookies to greet us on arrival. The inkeepers were very friendly and accomodting. They made sure our stay was very comfortable. This B&B is located in a beautiful neighborhood in NE Portland. We look forward to staying at Portland's White House Again.

We were in Portland visiting relatives but wanted to ahve 1 night to ourselves since our anniversary fell during the stay. Upon arrival we were greeted by Kim who informed us that we were upgraded from the Rose room to Barons. I don't think there is a whole lot of difference to the room itself but the bathroom in Barons is much, much larger. My wife enjoyed soaking in the claw foot tub. The innkeepers gave us a great dinner suggestion in downtown Portland. Breakfast the next morning was terrific, including the elk sausage. Lots of towels in the bath along with comfy terry cloth robes. Two cookies were waiting in the room upon check-in and chocolates when we returned from dinner. A very elegant place.

The staff(better said friends) welcome you with open arms the minute you walk in the door and present the type of atmosphere in which you dont need to say word one and your every need is met with a smile. We certainly felt at home and would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone who is looking for that once in a lifetime unique getaway. We will be back! Thanks to all!

Perfect combination of sevice without being intrusive. Champagne, cookies, chocolates, soft music - very nicely done. The breakfast was oustanding - Quiche, sausage, fruit, muffin.

The room, the small touches (e.g. chocolates, cookies) were stellar. The service was amazing as well as the breakfast. We will absolutely be back here and recommend it to anyone!

The White house exceeded our high expectations. We have stayed at B&B's around the world and this experience was one of the tops. The rooms were great, the breakfasts a delight and the staff very helpful.

My wife and I live in Portland, but stayed at the White House for a night as a gift. It was beautiful and the staff was very friendly and sensitive to our gluten-free dining needs. Even though it was no more than 30 minutes from home, we felt like we were on vacation in another city.

The location near the Lloyd Center has many small shops and restaurants nearby. Everything was very pleasant.

We had such a great time staying at Portland's White House! We loved the historic decor and our room was everything we could hope for. Amazing staff, amazing food and the perfect location. Suburb breakfast in fantastic setting. Extremely comfortable bed. You must experience the White House to fully appreciate it.

This property is lovely and in a wonderful neighborhood within walking distance of shops and restaurants. Everyone was so friendly and went out of their way to make me feel comfortable. The breakfast was delicious and they were very kind and accommodating regarding my dietary restrictions. I will definitely stay here again.

My husband and I just returned from a short trip to Portland and we cannot say enough positive things about this wonderful B&B. It is both elegant and cozy. It is filled with antiques but manages to not feel overly precious. There are plenty of modern amenities. Also, the breakfasts are delicious. And, you cannot complain about the scrumptious homemade cookies that are in your room every day and the chocolate truffles. The staff is amazing and you feel very well taken of. The inn is located in the Irvington neighborhood which is lovely and walking friendly. There were lots of shops and restaurants on NE Broadway just a couple of blocks away. And, as other reviewers have mentioned, it is a quick drive to downtown Portland. I highly recommend this B&B.

Portland’s White House is a B&B mansion filled with ambience and antiques fit for the cover of any magazine. Our party of eight from the U.S. and Canada was delighted with its warm accommodations - soft, cozy four-poster beds, luxurious bathrooms, afternoon cookies and dark chocolates, cheerful lounging areas, and delicious gourmet breakfasts. Our host, Lanning Blanks, was caring, attentive and welcoming. He saw to our every need including food allergy alternative meals; help with minor ailments, transportation requests and dining recommendations. We all agreed; if you wish to be spoiled, Portland’s White House is the perfect get-away choice.

A stately mansion filled with ceramic treasures makes for a wonderful B&B. The service was excellent, the breakfasts (we had four) interesting and delicious (one exception, the sausage was not great). The only fault we saw was the property maintenance could be improved (e.g., outside painting). Such maintenance issues had no effect on our stay.

The White House is a beautiful mansion filled with antiques and art. The best chocolate chip cookie and Moonstruck chocolates awaited us on check-in. The bed was incredibly comfortable. Breakfasts were fabulous and Lanning is a generous and entertaining host!

Located in the convenient Northeast section of the city, in a historic neighborhood, Portland's White House offers classic, yet cozy, comforts at a very reasonable price. Fresh baked cookies and truffles welcomed us. Then we were treated to an outstanding breakfast in the morning. Our room was spacious, the bed comfortable. We'll definitely return.

Not much to report. Booked a room for a romantic getaway, and we were given a free upgrade to the biggest room. The house is truly amazing, the room even better. We loved the big bathtub and HUGE soft bed. We had cookies and chocolate waiting for us and we were able to walk a few blocks to a restaurant for dinner. There was a big party in the banquet room, and we hardly noticed. Our evening wasn't interrupted or affected at all, even with party guests enjoying themselves and coming and going. Breakfast was good, not great. We didn't stay here for the food, we came for the incredible room and house. We left very very happy. Great stay, great bed and breakfast. I will go again.

As far as food, we had a southern-style huevos rancheros. It was delicious, healthy, and had a beautiful presentation; but traveling from Texas, we had hoped for something less familiar, such as some outstanding pancakes, french toast, or other baked good. We were only able to stay one night, so obviously had we stayed longer our taste buds might have been satisfied. We will definitely stay here again on our next trip to Portland.

The White House was the perfect intimate wedding place. The service and atmosphere was beyond our expectations and we would recommend it to anyone wanting a small, private getaway.

The Portland White House was beautiful and decorated lovely. The cookies and chocolate truffles in our room were delicious. The parlor was a great place to visit with friends and to read a book.

Thanksgiving with family in P-town, found the White House nearby. What a delightful B&B - stayed in the cozy Carolina room - very comfortable accommodations. All antique furnishings. Colors and art in this home - beautifully done, warm and inviting. Incredible staff, service was perfect and the breakfasts are truly to die for.

We stayed four days at Portland's White House. It was absolutely perfect. Lovely area...beautiful room...and seriously delicious gourmet breakfasts. Justin, the manager (and chef!) missed his calling!! We will absolutely stay there again.

We went to the PDX White House for the night of our wedding, for a special treat before embarking upon our honeymoon later on. The house was fantastic and full of charm. The customer service was excellent and prompt.

My husband and I are native Portlanders, and we just wanted to stay somewhere unique and local for our anniversary. This mansion is one of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed. Large enough to be impressive and interesting...small enough to feel personal and welcoming. Gorgeous antiques throughout. Lanning was on vacation, so we didn't get to meet him, but he left us in excellent, capable hands. All staff were courteous and attentive. A perfectly pleasant experience!

We had a very nice stay at the White House. The decor was "old world" and we enjoyed the ambiance and style. The breakfasts were very well done, delicious. I enjoyed talking with other guests at the family-style breakfast table. The location is bit far from downtown but in an old neighborhood that is quiet - great walking! I will return when in Portland again.

Portland's White House is located in a very lovely quiet neighborhood within walking distance of many cool pubs, restaurants, and shops. We stayed in the Balcony Room. The bed was plush and luxurious and the room was equipped with a flat screen TV, an ipod dock, and lots of informative local magazines. The room was quite small and the balcony itself was tiny. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the cookies and chocolates awaiting us in our room. The six-head shower had very low water pressure, which took the novelty out of the experience. Our breakfast of stuffed french toast was delicious but we were hoping for more food. We could hear the cooks' conversations while we ate and the topic was less than savory. This B&B is by no means upscale, but for a fun and casual stay in Portland it's not bad.

Portland's White House is really terrific. The staff could not have been more friendly and accomodating. We really did feel at home there. Breakfasts were wonderful as were the chocolates and homemade cookies in our room each day. We will certainly stay there again

I usually stay by myself, traveling on business. I feel comfortable here solo and would also feel very comfortable staying here with my wife; it's welcoming and romantic without making solo travelers feel awkward. The breakfasts are sensational; I usually have oatmeal and cottage cheese for breakfast but I throw the calorie counter out and go all out here.

We had a great visit. The house is beautifully decorated with everything you would expect from the era. Lanning is very friendly and the atmosphere is homey, not stuffy or uppity. Highly recommend!

The White House is a very lovely place. We really enjoyed our stay. Breakfast was wonderful just too much food.

Everything about this Bed & Breakfast was what I had hoped for, I had reserved a room as a gift and was not disappointed. The house is gorgeous, historic and elegant, and the service was excellent throughout our stay. I had not known what to expect as far as what we would be served for breakfast, but it did not disappoint. It truly was a gourmet breakfast, I couldn't ask for anything more. Without a doubt, I will be recommending the Portland White House to family and friends.

Stayed in the Balcony room for three nights, the one just above the front door. Pluses: Great looking building, kept reasonably well, in a really nice neighborhood. Nice view and charming decor. The sheets were nice but the feather mattress pad had pointy feather tails sticking out. Beautiful shared areas with a grand piano. Minuses: The room was very small, there wasn't a desk and one had to sit on the bed, since the side chairs were small pushed against the corners between other pieces of furniture. The air system was very loud and impossible to turn off. Made it very hard to have a good night sleep. The bathroom was small with no room for toiletries. We had to put our things on top of the toilet tank, which was a drag because every second flush, the float got stuck and we had to remove the tank lid to unhook it to get it to fill and flush the next time. The toilet got plugged very easily. The multi-head shower had not even enough pressure for one head. We had everything shut down just to get a dribble of water. The TV was the worst we've ever seen and the remote control didn't work. The breakfast was repetitive and average at best. The home baking was good however but the service itself was mediocre. We heard the expression "we're trying to keep our food costs down" about 5 times one morning. All the gay guys we know are very friendly and particular about the details, these two were an odd ball, one of them was very rude and the other, who wore 10 year old T-shirts could not ever remember who wanted coffee and who wanted tea. Overall, we were not impressed with our stay there, we met some nice people and also some rude ones, the place is charming but the hosts are not. Be my guest, try it at your own risk and hopefully you'll have a better experience than ours. Oh and by the way, don't go in winter, the balcony doors leak a lot and you'll very likely be really cold!

Your jaw will first hit the floor when your eyes gander at every nook and cranny in this beautiful 100 year- old former timber baron mansion. The owner and staff who greet you, and then are there to take care of every detail and need you might have are just world-class. We were treated to warm fires, scrumptous gourmet meals, fresh baked snacks, and every possible creature comfort you would dream of when our party of 20 was there for three day/ two night stay and wedding ceremony. Then the accommodations are both private, and yet you feel very together with everyone there in the same common areas for socializing an dining, and rooms with huge king beds that you could sleep 20 years in and never know you missed a day, large, private baths with every room annointed in an eclectic mix of 18th, and 19th century art, pottery, and fixutures. You really feel like you are stepping back into time, and are of some royal lineage when you are there. Lanning was such a great caretaker of all of us, and especially doted on our children and made them feel welcome in his White House. The kids loved the downstairs ballroom, stripped of breakable heirloom pieces where they could play the piano, make a little noise, and have open space to be kids in. We had a wonderful time getting to meet our new in-laws, and the cozy space with so much to keep your eyes roaming all over during your stay will simply astound you. It was a great place to hold our small ( 20 person) family wedding where we all got to stay and be together for the long weekend. Truely memorable place and stay we had this weekend. Don't miss a chance to stay here when you are in Portland.

attended a private event and stayed overnite we were treated so special by lanning and his entire staff. the room was beautiful large with lots of natural light. bedding and mattress so comfortable and breakfast pure heaven and the conversation so much fun. when you come and stay in portland be sure to stay at the portland white house and you won't be disappointed

Whilst this was quite possibly one of the most beautiful B&Bs I’ve ever stayed in there were some serious problems. The room was unbearably hot and I was told the A/C was ‘turned off for the year’. We had to sleep with all the windows open to the street and an unimaginably filthy fan blowing the whole night. The breakfast was merely average and was not read when they said it would be. One excellent thing was there were no scents anywhere to trouble me; no fabric softener or dryer sheets, no room deodorizers, no plug-in air fresheners. It was the first B&B I could actually sleep at without having to take a handful of allergy meds while there. It’s a shame I couldn’t sleep because of the heat. That said; the B&B is magnificently beautiful with more antiques than the Antiques Roadshow. It’s perfectly situated within a nice neighborhood in Portland within a few minutes drive or walk from just about everything. While I may never stay there again anyone wishing to stay there when the heat or A/C is running will not be disappointed.

If you think that B&Bs are just about fussy decor and furnishings that are more attique than antique, go directly to Portland's White House. From the genuine antiques and original artwork to the original Tiffany stained glass windows, this amazing mansion combines charm and comfort with elegance and hospitality. Great location in a beautiful residential neighborhood too.

We stayed 3 nights at this bed and breakfast in late August of '07. It is just as beautiful as the website shows. Lanning is very kind and attentive as is his staff. Lanning even made up a plate of desserts for my family (who were not guests) when he saw we were making a road trip. The rooms are papmering plus! Thankfully I have family in Portland so I get to re visit this wonderful place. Kitty and Jack

Lanning and his White House is a fantasy come true. In a word, "Decadent." Lanning answers questions from his guests in a way that left me wanting to know more (but I didn't want to be too nosey). I am now hooked on luxury level B and Bs for my short travel adventures.

This venue was so out of my league as I drove up, but immediately upon arrival was made to feel a part of the family. My 1st time at a B&B and has set the standards for what I expect from now on. Lannie is a huge part of what makes the venue special, he is open,honest and willing to answer any questions with just enough info. to keep you wanting more, and does this in a proud parent type of way, so you know he loves what he does and it shows.

We spent 3 nights. We loved the lively conversations with Lanning. He is a jolly, people-loving, multi-tasker. He can serve your bountiful breakfast creation while fielding everyones' questions about himself and the inn and the area. He is full of useful information and is never too busy to sit for a minute and talk with you. Our daughter was invited to share breakfast with us the first day which greatly impressed us. She, in the hospitality field, was greatly impressed with the cleanliness of the room.

We were greeted by a young man who helped us to our room. The home is amazing. We enjoyed wondering around the empty main floor--playing the piano, a game of chess. The room was terrific, very elaborate and elegant. Breakfast was when we became very disappointed. The innkeeper was boastful and the conversation at breakfast was very uncomfortable. The food was pleasant, but not remarkable.
