Bluebird Guesthouse

The Bluebird is a braeth of fresh air and comfort for a tired travelor. It was quiet, peaceful and there was great coffee and PLENTY of breakfast at any time!

I have never stayed at a guesthouse before, so we weren't sure what to expect. It is basically a very, very nice hostel arrangement with every amenity you could need (e.g. fridge full of great breakfast foods, brand new washer and dryer, complimentary computer/internet, etc.) Our room was very classy and comfortable. This whole house appears to have undergone a massive renovation, but has retained all of it's 1920?s character. Every detail is polished and new feeling. Unbelievable, especially for what we paid. Why anybody would stay in a hotel, or anywhere else in Portland for that matter, I couldn't say. This place would be perfect for romantic couples, business folk, families, and/or people looking for a very nice place for cheap (we were in the first and last categories). Never staying anywhere else in Portland again.

The Bluebird is a great little place for the DIY B&B kind of person. My room, though small, was quite cozy for one person and the rest of the house affords other venues in which to spend time. The kitchen is big and bright and clean with options available for a light fix-it-yourself breakfast. My only negative critique is that the bagels and muffins are certainly not fresh daily and don't seem to be replaced until they're gone - even if that takes several days. The location on Division is OK, though the shops and amenities are a bit more sparse than if it were on Hawthorne. However, Hawthorne is just a short walk away.

Homey and very efficient, All my needs easily met. Would be nice to have printer capabilities. I always enjoy my stay.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Bluebird guest house! Our room, The Eliot Smith room, was very quaint and suited our needs and our personal style. We enjoyed being able to use the kitchen nook in the morning to have a quick bagel and a juice before venturing out. The overall decor of the house was what we were looking for, and the photos on the website did it justice. Thanks again! Steve

When I first arrived in Portland, I took the wrong bus and ended up on the NE side (as it turns out, most routes have the same number bus in each direction, but I was new to public transport). So, my first impression wasn't all that great of the city. By around 3:30pm I finally made it to the right stop and walked down the street to Bluebird. I let myself in, was aided in finding my room by a wonderful older woman who was also staying there, and settled in with no problems. The turning point early on in my trip was Bluebird Guesthouse. It made such a great impression that I was able to feel more comfortable in the city and less like a horribly lost tourist. The Guesthouse is nice and clean, cozy, and really it just feels like you've lived there for some time after you've spent the night. I had a really great experience, and it was a lot of fun. When I go back to Portland to see the things that I missed out on this time around, I'll definitely go back to Bluebird.

I finally booked early enough to get a room at the Bluebird! I loved staying there. The location is excellent, plenty of free parking to ditch your car and walk this lovely neighborhood. Accomodations were clean and cute. I loved the decor. WiFi worked fine. My only comment is that on the 2nd floor, some numbers or markings on the door would be great especially if you arrive at night to easily find the bathrooms. I already booked my next stay at the Bluebird!

I lived in PDX for many years, back in the 1990s, and oh, the nostalgia I felt at Bluebird Guesthouse -- it embodies the best of southeast Portland style: comfortable, colorful, cozy, clean, classy, and a teeny bit creaky all at once. I will definitely stay there again!

I love staying at the Bluebird and getting up when I want and fixing my breakfast when I am ready to eat. I also like to use their kitchen for other cooking. The rooms are cozy and the sharing the bathroom is rarely a problem.

Loved my four-day stay here. Stayed in two different rooms on the second floor just to change things up, neither of which had its own bathroom, but I never had to wait in line to take a shower or brush my teeth. The house has a lot of character and plenty of common area. The rooms are adorable. I slept so well, very quiet and relaxing. The staff was very helpful. Everything was also very clean and tidy. Also, the bus line that goes to the train station has a stop right in front, so very convenient location on a street full of shops. Finally, I really liked that the continental breakfast food was left in an accessible spot throughout the day so that if you wanted a second coffee or banana later in the day it was there for you to have. Overall, I was really impressed, and thought that my experience at the Bluebird was totally worth the value, which is reasonable anyway. I even got to enjoy the bench-swing in the front porch! A beautiful place for any season, and I would totally stay here again on a future visit to Portland!

Nice old fashioned house with comfortable rooms, even in the economy rooms in the basement. Big kithcen and dining room so it was really nice to be able to keep some things in the refrigerator and cook a few meals, especially breakfast. (They did provideorange juice, a hot pot of coffee and bagels, muffins and oatmeal every morning, as well as bananas and apples, but I liked to make my own omelet in the mornings.) Since I only drink decaf, it was great to have a coffee shop right next door so I could start every morning with a decaf latte. Division Street is a great place to be in Portland and it made a good home headquarters whether I was going into the city or doing things in the suburbs each day .Bathroom access was OK, especially since there were not many other guests while I was there, but I imiagine it could be a bit dicey if the house was full. Really nice group areas (living room and den with firepace) besides the big kitchen and dining room. Very clean and well run; folks were very helpful and courtious but not intrusive on your privacy. It was nice to have a washer and dryer avaiable for my week long stay. I would most definitely stay there again on another trp to Portland. So much better than an inpersonal hotel

Overall this place is great. It's convenient, quiet, low key, no fuss, clean and a great price. I never actually met anyone running the place. They seem to trust you to look after yourself which works great - as compared to other B&Bs where I've stayed. The only negative I would give is the baked goods which are part of the continental breakfast seemed to be there for several days - the bagels/muffins etc never seemed to change and the former were really tough. The kitchen is available for use, and really, it is PDX so it's almost shameful to not eat out for breakfast.

This was our second time staying at the Bluebird. We decided to go for the room with private bath. Very nice, large and comfortable. Love the communal kitchen, living and dining area. Feels like a hostel for grown ups.

Found the accommodations very clean, very adequate, and an excellent value.

I loved that it felt as though we were walking into a good friend's cozy home when we arrived. I appreciated the freedom and independence, with little interaction with the hosts. The kitchen was well-outfitted with yummy breakfast foods, and our room was quaint and comfortable. We would like to return when the weather gets warmer to be able to better enjoy the inviting couch and fun backyard. thanks!

Stayed here for two nights in November when I was checking out portland state. Had an amazing time. The house is so nice, feels just like home. THe guesthouse is in a perfect neighbourhood with a great coffee shop next door and cool shops nearby

Exactly what I expected. Was very pleased and will stay there again upon return to Portland.

I now make the Bluebird my home when i visit portland. The rooms are cozy and immaculate; the house itself homey and comfortable. Fantastic kitchen where guests wander in in their bathrobes for coffee and chat over breakfast. Staff is terrific, always helpful and friendly.

The Bluebird Guesthouse was simple, clean, and in a great location. The staff was friendly and gave me information about PDX. I would definitely stay there the next time I visit PDX.

My one night stay was comfortable but felt a little awkward since there was no one greeting me. In fact I only saw one other guest next morning for the self-service breakfast.

My mother and sister stayed here for three days, was fabulous! Very pleased with the rooms. Would recommend to anyone that came to the area, and will use again soon I hope!

The Bluebird Guesthouse is a wonderful place to stay in Portland; terrific value; wonderful, charming old house with lovely antique furniture and details; our room was spacious; having the use of the kitchen was a great bonus. We'll be back!

This is an incredible little hostel. We were very happy with it and I think we will definitely be using it again. I would recommend it to anyone.

My room door would not latch, so when I left to go anywhere at all, I had to lock up to keep the door from swinging open and revealing my belongings. I felt some concern about whether there was anyone in charge on the premises. But the bed was excellent and I was quite comfortable. I would have preferred to have my own bathroom but didn't want to pay the extra it required.

We arrived late and had to leave very early. They were very accommodating. We were in the lower level room and it was very comfortable and very quiet. Would definitely stay again

Myself and one guest attended this beautiful bed and breakfast in southeast Portland. The rooms were beautiful and included a title of an author I adore, Ken Kesey. Although we arrived too late to meet anyone upon our check-in, we were happy to see a pleasant, always smiling staff attending to the rooms. we would recommend this to anyone looking for a wonderful two person, slightly romantic experience that comes with great accessibility to a lot of Portland sights and attractions.

We stayed in Bluebird Guesthouse for two days while visiting Portland. The house was clean and welcoming. The room was well lit and neat. Breakfast was great too. We seldom saw other residents in the house so it seemed to us that the whole house was for us :) especially in the early morning! And also house has a very convenient location - close to artistic stores, restaurants,etc.

I spent Friday night in the Gabrielo Garcia Marquez room at the Bluebird, and it was just wonderful. The bed was comfy and the location -- right on Division Street -- made getting to downtown Portland a very easy proposition. The #4 Trimet bus goes right past the front door and takes you to Portland's Old Town/Chinatown with no need to change lines. Very handy! The guest house is also located near to the Hawthorne district, where I took in a music show at the Hawthorne Theater and near excellent places to dine. You can tell I had a great time in Portland -- and staying at the Bluebird made everything easy.

We enjoyed our stay at Bluebird Guesthouse. The facility was clean, quiet and all the guests were friendly. The bed was very comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked with good quality breakfast foods. We stayed six nights, and we requested and received fresh towels every other day ... no problems.

I ended up at the Bluebird guesthouse for the first time four years ago, when all the hostels I tried were full; since then I've been waiting to go back - and it was well worth the four-year build-up! It's a very cosy place, though you should probably avoid it if you're very asosial, and prefer crisp, white towels and sterile surroundings. If, however, you enjoy old houses, don't mind creaking beds, and wouldn't mind staying in a place where you can end up in lots of random conversations with - from what I experienced - very pleasant people, this place is definitely worth a try! The service is lovely, the shared bathrooms are plenty, the breakfast is good (and you have the option of buying your own food, storing it in the fridge and making whatever you want to - it would probably be quite practical for people with food allergies), and there are maps available, as well as a selection of books left over from previous guests. It's not the kind of place that is a good fit for everyone (they don't allow kids under the age of six, and it might not be very family-friendly if you have younger children), but if you want something unique, this is definitely the place for you! I, personally, am hoping I won't have to wait four years for my next visit.

Staying at the Bluebird Guesthouse was such a delight! We arrived late after a long day of travel and were pleasantly surprised to find the place easily. Having the key-code access at the front door was nice not to have to worry about keeping someone up late to let us in. We stayed in the Beverly Cleary room, which had a comfy queen size bed, lots of storage for us to unpack and a huge private bathroom with a skylight over the toilet! The charm of this old craftsman's style house really shined through and we felt at home right away. I also appreciated the fresh cup of (good!) coffee in the morning and the spread of bagels and muffins. We even made some pancakes one morning. Nina was sweet and wonderful to chat with, it was like having a really great roommate :) The best part of staying at the Bluebird was the easy of accessing the #4 bus which takes you straight downtown. So convenient! My husband and I will definitely stay here next time we visit Portland!

I stayed here for 3 nights last week and it was perfect for my needs. The neighborhood was quiet, there was easy parking, and the house is close walking distance to cafes/shops and a short drive away from downtown. Nina was super cool and helpful. The room was quiet, simple, and inexpensive. There was a copy of the Elliott Smith biography in the nightstand which was a nice touch. Having a shared bathroom means walking upstairs, but it was never occupied when I needed it. Since most of my time there was spent exploring Portland, I wasn't really using the kitchen or living room much at all. However, there is room to sit and read in the living room or enjoy the continental breakfast in the kitchen. Overall, I would stay here again if visiting Portland and I would recommend it to others. -Jared (San Francisco, CA)

This place is clean, cute and cozy. It's centrally located; everything you need is within walking distance. The guest computer saved me. The owner was incredibly helpful and sweet. The coffee and breakfast was delicious and convenient. I'm staying there again in 3 weeks!

Why stay in some anonymous hotel when you can have all the comforts of home at the Bluebird?

If you enjoy a relaxed low-key atmosphere, then Bluebird Guesthouse is the place for you!

Spent 4 nights in the Raymond Carver room -- good for a single person, too small for two. Location was wonderful -- great restaurants within a few blocks, Hawthorne District an easy walk. Parking was just as good as represented -- amazing to this New Yorker.

A really nice, quiet B&B with friendly staff and excellent service in a beautiful character house. So relaxing that we could have spent all day hanging out on the porch with coffee and reading the newspaper.

Clean and comfortable. Choose the rooms in the back of the house. Front rooms face Division ST. which can be noisy. Staff extremely friendly and helpful.

we stayed in the Beverly Cleary room (own bath). it was roomy,bed very comfortable, spotless, continental breakfast & 24 hr access to kitchen a real plus, convenient location. The windows open! Best was the big porch and porch swing and the greenery surrounding it -- a real haven for us (we were in Portland for a big family event) -- and you're not trapped inside and in your room as you would be in a classic hotel Place ran very smoothly -- owners had thought of everything. Priced right. We will be back when we next visit Portland.

I really enjoyed my 6 night stay here while getting my daughter settled in college. The large kitchen was wonderfully stocked and felt like home with the "help yourself" service. My only wish was that the windows could be open for fresh air. The window AC was fine, but at night would rather have fresh air. I fully recommend staying here!

We stayed in the cozy Raymond Carver room at the beginning and end of our holiday this year. The B&B was tastefully decorated (no dried flowers!) and it was great to stay in a Craftsman and enjoy the architecture. We sat out on the veranda swing one evening playing a guitar from the B&B! Our stay was very quiet, and the place was very clean and tidy. I didn't even feel like there were other guests there. Nina took very good care of us an gave us recommendations about visiting Portland and Oregon. Thanks!

Since we arrived past mid-night, we did not meet any staff member. But we had been given clear instructions and everything was well prepared and organized. The room and bathroom were very clean, comfortable and well thought out.

I recommend the Bluebird as a base for anyone wanting to explore Portland. The house itself is a beautiful building, great location on Division St, some great restaurants and bars a short walk away. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, a great value place to stay.

This is not really a B&B. We consider it more of a upscale hostile. Breakfast was "stuff in the fridge" get it when you need it. There was coffee ready to be made and lots of great teas. We went out for breakfast because I need more than a muffin or bagel. But the location is close to great restaurants so it was easy to find a coffee shop for restaurant for breakfast. It sits on a busy street so its not super quite but we live urban and it was fine. The window air conditioner took some time to get use to. The price is great along w/ the location it was perfect for our stay in Portland. Easy interstate access and 15 min. from the airport. Awesome.

The Bluebird is a charming, low-key guesthouse. It's great to come and go as you please. The staff are available and helpful in the middle of the day, while in the morning and evening the guests have the place to themselves. This creates the sense of a real home away from home. The Bluebird is close to dozens of restaurants on Division and Hawthorn, and is convenient to downtown whether by bus, bike or car. We have been back every time we visit Portland, and if we had to stay anywhere else, it just wouldn't be the same. Jeff Dorr

We had a fantastic stay at the Bluebird (Beverly Cleary room). The room was large, extremely comfortable bed and had an oddly placed (though private) skylight over the toilet. The building is great - several rooms to lounge in, front porch swing, private backyard table/chairs. Just a brief (and I mean brief) walk from some amazing restaurants, cafes, etc. I could go on but really just give it a shot yourself.

Quiet, comfortable and walking distance to tasty food and delicious coffee. The perfect place to stay if you're taking a class at Bullseye Glass Factory (only about ~1 mile).

The staff at the Bluebird Guesthouse made me feel at home. The Raymond Carver room was right by the bathroom and conveniently organized, while small. The bed was particularly comfortable. The available computer helped me plan activities and transportation for my day. The location provided for a bus stop just steps from the front door. I will stay here again next time I'm in Portland.

My daughter and I stayed in the Gabriel Marquez room which has a private bath. It was a comfortable room and bed with a spacious bathroom. The room is right off the kitchen which could have been noisy, but besides hearing some light conversation in the morning, we would not have known other guests were even around! The inn has a front porch that was nice to sit and watch the neighborhood in the evening. We really enjoyed the southeast Portland area--if you have bicycles be sure to bring them--you will feel right at home exploring by bike: Voodoo Too donuts, Mt.Tabor park, shopping on Hawthorne. I plan on visiting again and would stay at the Bluebird Inn: easygoing vibe and comfortable, too!

Stayed in a small room without bath for 2 nights. Night time was noisy because child in another room must have been sick. Walls are thin in this older house. No toilet seats in the shared bathrooms a surprise. Also no dishwasher in kitchen made me wonder about sanitary practices. Kitchen was pretty clean though given how old house and fixtures are. Not enough fruit and no low/non fat options. Ended up buying most of my breakfast food as a result. One night spent in room with bath. That was ideal. All in all a good place to land especially since guesthouse is in an active and interesting neighborhood on a direct bus line to downtown. Street parking was readily available. Was greeted when I arrived but had no idea who was in charge when I left. Staff person I talked to upon arrival was extremely cordial and helpful. Bottom line, I would stay here again but only in a room with a bath.

We loved the Bluebird Guesthouse so much, we've already booked a future stay there! The house is very lovely. I like that the breakfast is continental and not sit-down. They have a large kitchen available for cooking in. I will be recommending to friends. Very reasonably priced too.

I was impressed with the neighborhood that the Bluebird Guesthouse was situated. The area has a bohemian flair to it. Cool cafes and thai restaurants are within walking distance. The guesthouse itself reminds me of places in Europe. Others staying there were friendly too. I would highly recommend it if you want something different from generic hotels.

We stayed at the Bluebird (Sherman Alexie roomm) for 6 nights when we in town for our brother's wedding. They live a 8 blocks away from the Bluebird, it was easy to get together and spend time with our family. Everything was very clean. Even though we were sharing a bathroom, we never had to wait. We had no problem parking on the street, most of the time, right in front. Self serve kitchen and breakfast works great. The common rooms on the first floor are cozy if you want to hang out in the evening. We found plenty of resturants and shops within walking distance. Overall a great place to stay. We'll definately consider staying here again when we are in town (and brother's house is full of family)

This way our first stay in a B&B, and what a great choice. This inn has tons of character, and is in a funky Portland neighborhood; within walking distance are a few great antique shops (Old Portland is a must!) as well as some interesting little watering holes. A word of advice though: in the Gabriel Garcia-Marquez room, sounds from the kitchen prevent any sort of sleeping in!

We stayed in the Ken Kesey room one night and Raymond Carver the next (no room was available two consecutive nights when we booked). Both rooms were great, the difference being that for $10 more, Ken Kesey is much bigger. I wouldn't want to spend much time in Raymond Carver because it would feel cramped; fortunately, we didn't have to. The house is beautiful and nicely furnished with classic and retro stuff, all clean and in good condition. I hardly interacted with the staff except for emails, but they seemed nice and had no problem arranging our room-swap two-night stay. Same with the other guests. I had no trouble with waiting for a bathroom but I could see how that might happen; still, unless you are really in a hurry, it should be fine. The complementary breakfast foods (muffins, bagels, coffee) were a nice touch--better than standard hotels by far. Overall, I'd recommend it and would stay there again.

This was our first time in Portland, and we were looking to stay someplace with some character on the cheap with access to major public transit routes. Bluebird met our needs perfectly! Not only was the house and neighborhood fun, but very welcoming and extremely well-kept. We felt very comfortable lounging in the common areas and taking our time with breakfast in the morning or a couple glasses of wine in the evening. The guesthouse was a great way to experience Portland at a local level. We will absolutely be recommending it to friends and family!

I have to say that our stay at the Bluebird was one of the best parts of my sister and my trip to Portland. The place was charming, and we loved the area that the Bluebird was located in. For us, it was far better than staying in the heart of downtown because the area was so funky, artsy, with great vintage stores, coffee shops and restaurants (just a few blocks away on Hawthorne Street) -- we wanted to stay out there all the time. We had a rental car, and parking was extremely easy, though it was also easy to take the bus into the city (which I did as well). We loved that breakfast was "serve yourself" and used the kitchen to cook up eggs in the morning, and dinner in the evening, when we didn't feel like going out. My sister enjoyed playing her accordian on the front porch. All in all, we loved the Bluebird.

Close to restaurants, bars, unique shopping, public transit. Some attention to the yards, landscaping could improve the outdoor space. Pleasant stay overall for the budget conscious traveler. Sharing bathrooms wasn't a problem.

I loved this place. It was very laid back and you could come and go as you pleased. It was an ideal portland guest house in terms of location and decor and it was exactly what we were looking for. We stayed in the beverly cleary room which had a great bathroom and lots of space.

My husband and I visited Portland last year and due to a limited budget, stayed at the cheapest hotel we could find. It was so old and gross and unclean, we vowed to search for something better for our return vacation this summer. The BlueBird Guesthouse was exactly what we were looking for! The price per night was only a little bit more than the gross hotel from last year, but we got so much more bang for our buck. The room was cute with soft sheets and lamps that cast warm lighting. The kitchen had this little nook where my husband and I sat in the mornings to enjoy the breakfast that the Bluebird provided. They always had delicious bagels and muffins out plus coffee and tea and even orange juice which really came in handy when we got the cold half way through the week. The innkeeper was friendly and helpful. I asked her if she knew what the weather would be like that week; she didn't, but then came back and told me after looking it up on her computer. She went out of her way to be helpful. The whole inn was adorable with quirky quaint accents throughout every room. I was absolutely delighted and didn't want to leave. Next time I'm in Portland, this will be my go-to lodging.

I found the room to be clean and comfortable and the bathrooms also clean. The people that were visiting were friendly and I was happy to find a location near a relatives home in Portland.

The guesthouse was very quiet and had a lovely patio and backyard to relax in. The kitchen area is huge and self service. Even though the inn was booked solid, I never ran into another guest. I like their early check in time and it is a convenient walk to the Hawthorne area. Would definitely stay here again!

The Bluebird Guesthouse is a hidden gem. So mellow and comfortable and a great bargain as well. Perfect location if you happen to be visiting Reed College as we were. We were charmed by the house and the neighborhood and we were able to take the bus and light rail everywhere -- didn't even need to rent a car. There is top-notch dining within walking distance -- we recommend Pok Pok Thai for an amazing dinner and Pix Patisserie for late night dessert and wine. Add in a well-stocked vintage clothing store, some lovely coffee houses, and other interesting shops, and you could easily spend the day just strolling the neighborhood.

We stayed 6 nights in the Gabriel Garcia-Marquez room. The room was large with a very nice included bathroom. The kitchen was right next door, which made it very convenient to start the coffee maker in the morning. It was already set up with really good coffee. I like that the staff is there only during the day. We heard no street noise. Our only problem was finding it at night when we first arrived. I also wished for some more protein options at breakfast, perhaps some eggs, yogurt or cheese. The bagels, muffins and organic fruit were quite fresh.

My 19 year old daughter and I only spent one night here because we already had reservations on the Oregon coast. But, the night we stayed went fine. We never had to wait to use a shared bathroom. The place was really quiet for what, at first appearance, seemed a creaky old (but cute) place where sound would carry. The neighborhood was very walkable. Bagels, fruit and coffee for breakfast was perfectly adequate. Next time I visit Portland (and hopefully get to stay longer), I'll have no hesitation in booking a stay at the Bluebird Guesthouse.

Although the owners were for the most part absent, they do a fantastic job of making sure everything we needed was available to us. There was a nice note on our bed when we got there, and breakfast in the kitchen. We enjoyed getting to know some of the other guests as they sat out on the porch or over coffee in the kitchen in the morning. The room was very cozy, well decorated, well lit, and comfortable temperature. The house itself is absolutely beautiful, and really well located. I was impressed by the value of the room. We would have paid more to stay at a hotel that wouldn't have had any character or opportunity to meet other guests. Great choice to stay here!

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this guesthouse. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and I also enjoyed interacting with my fellow travelers in the common areas. The kitchen in particular was nicely stocked and inviting, and there was free high-speed internet available for public use. Charming home away from home. Great location in SE Portland. The staff were very helpful. Serve yourself breakfast was the perfect oppurtunity to meet interesting guests and chat around the beautiful dining table. will go again.

We wanted to visit Portland, to see everything the city had to offer and to be in the middle of everything. Our only problem was finding somewhere affordable to stay. A friend recommended the Bluebird Guesthouse, and at $60 a night, it was right in our price range. We didn't realize until we arrived that this was more than an affordable B&B--it was in the middle of the vibrant Division Street neighborhood and only minutes from downtown. The owners weren't intrusive and everyone was friendly. The Bluebird Guesthouse was clean and the morning coffee, muffins and bagels were a great way to start each day. Highly recommended!

I stayed for 6 nights to visit our two young adult kids, our grandson and his Dad. The stay was very pleasant, inviting and the staff that I met were very helpful and kind. I think the value of staying there alone makes it worthwhile. However, it is also conveniently located, with a good system for the personal use of the kitchen and refridgerator. Parking is also fairly easy even though the street it's on is a busy one. I had a good time and the internet service worked well too.

I stayed at the Bluebird Guesthouse two nights, I was traveling solo and on a limited budget, I stayed in the $60/night room. The house was lovely, it was welcoming and very comfortable. I will defiantly stay here again. It is located in a hip part of town with restaurants and other amenities very close by. My room was in the basement, and I might warn anyone with a active bladder (or someone that had a couple beers) that they will have to walk up stairs to use the bathroom.

I travel a lot for work and have gotten in a rut of staying at the closest large chain hotel near my project area. When in Portland I usually stay at the downtown Marriott due to it's convenient proximity to my project location. However this time my project was located in hotel-barren SE Portland. To mix things up I decided to stay at the Blue Bird Guest House, and I couldn't be happier with this decision. I was able to get one of the rooms with private bath. Both the room and bath were charming, spacious and very comfortable. I love the neighborhood in which this guest house is situated. Short walk to all sorts of delicious places to eat including famed Pok Pok, a pod of food charts, a wonderful bakery, etc. Staying here made my work trip feel more like a mini-vacation. Loved it!

The Bluebird Guesthouse was the perfect place for us to stay over a long weekend during our son's college graduation. We were able to come and go--using it as our base for exploring Portland--and also enjoy a nice, quiet breakfast sitting on the back porch before we started each day. Now that our son has decided to make Portland his home, the Bluebird will always be our choice for a place to stay when we visit. The Bluebird is in an excellent location for exploring SE Portland. It was definitely the most low-key b&b I've ever stayed at, which was mostly fine, except in the breakfast area, which was sub-par (muffins and bagels are fine, but they, along with the giant tubs of cream cheese and jam, seemed to be from Costco) and there was no juice of any kind to be had, no butter, no peanut butter, no cereal. Just the very basics. The room was very nice (the Gabriel Garcia Marquez) but it was right off the kitchen and when anyone was there, it sounded like they were in the bedroom with us. Also, more than once someone mistook our bedroom door for the door to the shared bathroom, which was a bit jarring at 3am.

We love staying at the Bluebird. It is simple, yet cozy and suits us perfectly. Sometimes we use it when we are on our way out of town or having a city respite (we live at the coast). Most recently when it was a refuge for my son and i while my husband had surgery nearby. My son could work on the computer and actually walk or bus down to the hospital. I could curl up in the evening and rest from the stresses of the process. easy walking distance to good eating too. Thanks for being there, Bluebird.

I loved staying at the Bluebird Guesthouse, it had a great feeling. The rooms looked exactly like the photographs, which I really appreciated. Great location and a clean guesthouse, without being sterile. (very warm feeling!) I would definitely stay there again.

We throughly enjoyed our four nights at the Bluebird. They were gracious enough to move us between two different rooms as one room was not available straight through for all of our stay. Quiet elegance. We loved the simplicity, yet clear attention to all the details that make for a comfortable, no hassle experience. Will definitely stay there again on a return trip to Portland. Stayed at downtown hotel on one of our first trips to Portland. It was fine, but the Bluebird was so much more relaxing and convenient. Felt like being at home.

This was a great place to stay. It's near the number 4 bus that can take you downtown and over to Mississippi Avenue, which is the weirdest/best route to be on. The breakfast food was great and easy to find. The whole place was very very clean. The kitchen very organized and bright. The living room/dining area also nice. I missed having a TV in my room or the living room, but I can understand why it wouldn't be there. It would disrupt the other guests too much.

We enjoyed our stay here a lot. The bedrooms are lovely, and the dining and living rooms are a great place to hang out and chat with people. The neighborhood is good for walking and dining.

Never saw the innkeepers while I was there! But they'd sent me a door code, room was ready and great, and continental breakfast was provided. Was pleased to find a computer with internet access available for guests to share. I would definitely recommend Bluebird as a good value, a clean and nice place, a good location.

Stayed two nights in the basement room. Very cozy, clean and totally will stay there again! Whole house felt warm and inviting. Kitchen was well equipped and breakfast choices pleniful. Will be back.

I am happy to be able to share my experience at Bluebird Guesthouse. My husband and I stayed there a few years ago when our son lived in SE Portland and loved it. So, when I scheduled a visit last week, even though he now lives in NE Portland, I was excited about staying there again. It meant I had to make a 20 minute drive to his area each day and night, but it was more than worth it. It has a warm, welcoming atmosphere that made me feel comfortable and safe. The staff is very friendly, the rooms are simple, but comfy and clean and the beds are great! I hope I have the opportunity to stay there again sometime soon.

If you enjoy staying in a beautiful old home, this is the place. I loved the architecture and feel of this home. The kitchen is very clean and spacious and has everything needed to make your own breakfast or just enjoy the delicious bagels and fruit. The coffee was ready to go every morning. I stayed in one of the rooms with a private bath which was perfect for me. I will stay there again if I'm in the Portland area.

From minute one, I felt right at home at The Bluebird Guesthouse. Nina and Monique are wonderful, the room was cozy, you have your choice of clawfoot tub or shower stall, the kitchen is fully equipped, coffee brewing, organic fruit and tea on the counter, and there are laundry facilities in the basement. What more could you ask for? The bus stops on the corner, to take you downtown, or the other way to Mt. Tabor, or you can catch a connecting bus up to Hawthorne Street. There's a computer off the kitchen, so you can plan your daily excursions online, or check your email. I would not hesitate to book again!!

We just spent six nights at the Bluebird Guesthouse and enjoyed our stay tremendously. The house was kept extremely clean, with a wonderful selection for breakfast and quiet with other respectful guests coming and going. There were opportunities for casual conversation if desired or complete privacy. The location was great if you're looking for slice of life in a neighborhood minutes from downtown and walkable to restaurants, shopping, and other neighborhoods of interest. This was the best of both worlds for a "homey" feel while on vacation yet accessible to sight seeing around Portland. If our travels ever bring us back to Portland, we would stay again and highly recommend it to others.

I would not recommend the Gabriel Garcia-Marquez Room. It is right off the kitchen and we had late night snackers having an argument 6 feet from our bed. They provide food for a continental breakfast but no service. Two of the three days we were there the coffee was gone and we had to make our own. With those reservations, I would still stay there again because of the location.

Great location, very helpful stuff - recommended good places to explore in the area. Obly one detail needs improvement - more fresh air in the house and in the room, because house is pretty old and you can feel smell of an old house, it' not too disturbing, but would be great if stuff could improve it.

I absolutely loved this guest house. Peaceful and full of character. The kitchen was nice and big if you wanted to cook in and the continental breakfast items were plenty! Using the internet was really easy, and I just loved walking around and looking at all the great architecture and furniture. Totally reasonable rates, way better than any hotel we could have gotten. Our room in the basement was clean and quaint, nothing too fancy. A bit noisy in the morning with people walking upstairs with shoes on, but the room was nice and dark at night. Taking a shower in the cool claw-foot tub was a treat! And there were so many places around the area for coffee, shopping, food trucks and breweries. We will definitely consider staying here again upon our next visit to Portland!

Well run establishment! Nice first floor common areas. Provided bathrobes helps with shared bathrooms. Food (fruit) always available in kitchen. Could improve method of providing front door info by auto sending second e-mail, very brief and identified as "Bluebird Guesthouse", with just that info. Would stay here again.

My Fiancée and I stayed in the Raymond Carver room, and it was just what we were looking for. Room was very small, but so full of character, color and plenty of windows that nothing seemed lacking. The house was charming, very quite and welcoming with delicious fresh bagels, muffins and fruit all day long in the kitchen. the location was perfect, just a short walk from Hawthorne, although we found parts of division to be just as lovely! We walked across the river to downtown which only took an hour, and caught the 4 bus back late that night(runs till midnight) which delivered us 1/2 block from the Bluebird. Nothing but good things to say about this place, had trouble with shower water being lukewarm but that could have been user error. We will definitely stay here again!

The Bluebird Guesthouse was a perfect spot to land in Portland. It got me out of downtown and gave me the chance to explore a range of Portland's eclectic neighborhoods.

WE LOVE BLUEBIRD HOUSE: This is our 3rd stay since Mar 2010, when my daughter moved to PDX. Bluebird is 6 blks from her house, the neighborhood is great, excellent location for accessing 205/84 for Airport, Columbia Gorge and south for Mall in Clackamas. Never had a problem sharing a bath; all guests have always been pleasant; house is very cozy; great kitchen. NINA was very helpful, and friendly. Can't wait to go back. Kerin

I'm definitely glad we stayed here instead of a sterile hotel. Great character and a comfortable bed. Breakfast was good. Showers had no lines. I just wish I could have stayed longer, but we had places to be.

We arrived in Portland after 10 hours of travel time, it was midnight by the time we tiptoed onto the front steps of the Bluebird Guesthouse. Even in the dark I could tell we made a good decision in choosing to stay a few days in this particular B&B, not only was it’s location perfect to explore the neighborhood but easily within walking distance to some of Portland’s best mom & pop shops. And the overall decor and feel of the Bluebird Guesthouse was adorable. We quickly felt right at home. During our stay we met a few friendly faces at breakfast and exchanged a couple casual hellos in the living area. Everyone was friendly but private, so we felt perfectly free to move about and leave whenever we pleased. I'm confident in saying we’d choose to stay there again, although this time we’d opt to pay a little extra for an upstairs bedroom, that gets less foot traffic. Even so, it was a charming and relaxing place to call home for a few nights in Portland.

Great retro atmosphere, feels like being in an Agatha Christie novel. Full kitchen with some baking supplies. Very few waits on bathroom, comfortable, affordable, charming and well located. Room was quite small for two, and stairs were very creaky.

We were completely at home at the Bluebird Guesthouse! Our room was charming, spacious and clean, we slept well, the other guests were considerate, and we had a nice quiet breakfast in the kitchen nook before we left. We'll come back next time we're in town.

the house is beautiful; it felt so homey, or like staying at a friend's house who was away and left little notes for you everywhere. we stayed in the elliott smith room, and the value was outstanding. we loved the breakfast options, too, and all the little details about the house (like that pull-down door with the flywheel and the porch swing). thank you so much for making such a great place for us to stay on our trip!

This is a beautiful and well taken care of guesthouse. The rooms are cozy and impeccable and this is arguably the best neighborhood in Portland, lots of coffee shops, dining, and fun places nearby. The breakfast is continental-- bagels, cream cheese, and muffins. Wonderful!!

My wife and I found the Bluebird Guesthouse to be the perfect match for our needs. It was warm, friendly, comfortable and perfectly located for us. The guitar that rested in the sitting area was a special bonus for someone who did not bring their instrument on vacation! Our next visit to Portland will include the Bluebird Guesthouse.

I have stayed at the Bluebird on two occasions. It is fun and comfy, well situated to drive, walk or take the bus to explore the neighborhood and other parts of Portland.

My boyfriend and I stayed in the Shermin Alexie room. We loved the fact that you didn't need to meet with anyone to check in or out. We pulled up, unpacked and had a lot of privacy. We loved the decor of all of the colorful rooms. The breakfast options were just right. We will definetly stay again the next time we are in Portland.

Quiet, comfortable old house and room with charm; Nina is a very warm and friendly hostess; complete freedom to move around the house and meet your housemates if you wish; centrally located amidst some great neighborhoods; TV would be nice, but I had no trouble filling my time with more worthwhile activities. met some great folks in the house. Can't beat the price, but I'd be willing to pay a little more with an included hot breakfast. I'll be back!

love, love, love the bluebird guesthouse! a home away from home with wonderful warm colors, decor, nice unexpected touches here and there. it's always a peaceful place to stay in one of portland's up and coming neighborhoods with some of the best restaurants and bars just a few minutes walk away.

i stayed in the Elliott Smith for a few nights and was very happy with my stay. the room itself was modest, being one of the cheapest in the house, but was still very nice. i enjoyed using the huge and lovely kitchen, which was fully stocked with dishes, silverware and cookware. i barely noticed the other guests most of the time. the convenience of the #4 bus that runs along Division to downtown was great.

Fourth stay and we are very satisfied with the Bluebird.

This guesthouse is perfectly located if you want to explore SE Portland! There are so many restaurants and bars within walking distance - and if you want to go a little further, the #4 bus is a half-block away. The rooms are quaint, clean, and affordable. I would recommend Bluebird to all of my friends.

We enjoyed our stay. The property is well maintained and the breakfast was adequate.

My girlfriend and I spent three days at the Bluebird before continuing onto our next destination, and we will definitely be coming back the next time we're in Portland. The location is convenient to some wonderful neighborhood restaurants, and of course the bus to downtown. The rooms are all different, of course, but we were in the Sherman Alexie and we found it to be comfortable and amply sized. It was so nice to have laundry available in the house, and although we didn't get around to using the kitchen much, it was good to know it was there as well. We both loved the fact that there aren't any TVs in the house, because that makes you more likely to spend time in the common areas, where you can meet your fellow guests (we had a great time playing a few games of dominoes with a couple visiting from California). All in all, we are very satisfied with our stay.

Bluebird Guesthouse will always have a special place in my heart. I may a bit biased since they were willing accomplices to my boyfriend's efforts to woo me with flowers and sweet-nothings! Putting my love life aside, I was very impressed with the cleanliness, atmosphere, and affordability of this charming home. I would recommend it to friends and family visiting Portland.

This guesthouse really felt like a "home away from home:" with kitchen privileges, a computer and phone for our use, it had all the conveniences of home. Even though it is located on a busy street, the rooms were amazingly quiet, and I especially appreciated the thermostat in my room that allowed me to turn down the heat.

This was a great find, in a great location! It's a nice older home, no frills, but very comfortable. There is shared space, kitchen, living and dining, that was nice to relax in during down time. Breakfast was simple, but adequate, and the kitchen is totally available for use if you want something more. Location is accessible to Hawthorne area and lots of shops and restaurants. We were there for 3 nights-did not have a room with a private bath, but for the money was very doable!

Loved the Blue Bird. Able to prepare Thanksgiving dishes for our meal, quite a plus!

Great place to stay in Portland. There a many shops and restaurants in walking distance to the road going parallel. Nice rooms and a shared kitchen that you can cook your own food, if you want to. I can higly recomend it!

A great place to stay! I always try to book this place when I stay in Portland. It is like staying at a friend's house but with your own room. Clean, quiet, and run by very nice people. Oh, and a terrific location if you're looking for something close to cafes, brew pubs, transit, etc!

We stayed 5 nights at the Bluebird Guesthouse in the same room Elliot Smith on the downstairs floor. It was quiet, clean, we just had just a small window but the queen bed was comfortable. I have stayed here a number of times and won't stay anywhere else in Portland. This is a great value and super cute. It's so nice to have a kitchen to use, but one that doesn't feel like grand central station like in hostels. I wish there were Bluebird Guesthouses in every city!

The Bluebird lets you be yourself. The rooms are cozy, the public spaces are inviting. The facilities are great with a nice detail for history. It is in a great neighborhood -- and just three blocks from Pok Pok Thai restaurant. We stayed for six nights and would go back in an instant.

Thanks for your fine, funky hospitality recently. It was my first stay at Bluebird and I'm sure I'll be back, since it seems my older son loves living in Portland---can't think why. The free wi-fi connection and washer-drier were both pleasant surprises---the place is spotless and decorated with some interesting old photos. Other guests were very quiet. Hot coffee, muffins and bagels were always ready in the early morning. I liked Division Street-- glad to hear you may be starting up at another location too.

A wonderful mix of turn-of-the-century boarding house and 50's decor. It's the perfect place for an independent traveler who enjoys b & b's but not the fussiness of it all--You want a bagel, it's there on the table; cream cheese is in the fridge. Make it yourself. And it's good. I will make it a point to return to this clean, unique and undemanding place.

Rooms are named after Oregon authors - neat idea, but there was nothing in the room to honor Beverly Cleary other than two books hidden in the drawer! Appreciated "Socks" nonetheless. Never saw any staff while we were there, which was fine - kind of felt like it was my place! Perhaps just me or one two many horror movie, but it felt a little spooky (because we didn't see anyone?). Overall, recommended if you would like simplicity and value.

Overall this charming guesthouse in SE Portland, OR exceeded my expectations and is high on my list as a place to stay on my next visit to Portland, OR. Wonderful to have a house as a home base to explore a new city when the local efficient TriMet can get you downtown quickly. Was great to have good coffee and some fruit available each morning as part of the included continental breakfast although the quality of the available muffins was a bit dubious. Also, there are many coffee, eating, dining options, including a selection of foodcarts and a New Seasons grocery store within comfortable walking distance. Highly recommend Bar Avignon a little further down SE Division Street. However, for a guest house that names its rooms after authors the lighting was not bright enough to read in certain rooms and certain locations in the guest house once dark. Common areas are spacious although, at times, far too warm in the common areas. The local Oregonian paper delivered daily was a helpful resource too. Also, very comfortable bed.

The Bluebird Guesthouse is a cool little inn in southeast Portland, within a reasonable walk of the Hawthorne District. It's right down the street from a pod of food carts, the Pix Patisserie, and the Weird Bar. Although it is on a busy street, the Bluebird is surprisingly quiet -- we didn't notice any urban noise during our stay. The Bluebird is an excellent value. We stayed in the Ken Kesey room (a cute touch: a copy of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" in the nightstand drawer), for $70 a night. To get a comparable rate from a regular motel, we'd have had to stay in the suburbs -- and who wants that? Breakfast is informal -- bagels, muffins, fruit and pancake mix for anyone ambitious enough to make pancakes. The kitchen was also available for use throughout the day, which would especially be convenient during a longer stay. The house is clean and charming, and well-maintained. We will definitely stay at the Bluebird again, any time we need to stay overnight in Portland.

What a wonderful place to stay when in Portland. I hate motels, and this was just what I needed when visiting my son in Portland. Clean rooms, quiet, lovely common areas and a helpful and super nice staff made this the place to go. I'll definitely be back!

Pleased to finally get to stay at the Bluebird, an understandably popular guesthouse given it's eye to comfort and at a very comforting price. A lovely soak in the clawfoot tub after a delicously spicy meal at Pok Pok, a read of one of Raymond Carver's short stories, and a peaceful sleep. Can't wait for the opportunity to return.

My husband and I stayed for two nights. The house is a great base for exploring Portland, as its decor gives you a sense of the blend of old with new that seems to typify the city. The continental breakfast available was great. The first floor features several sitting rooms to relax in, as well as a nice front porch swing.

Nice lodging. Arrived to an empty, quiet house. Room was clean. Bed was comfy. Bathroom was clean. Our stay was one night only and it was quiet. We didn't actually encounter anyone, but it was a nice place and centrally located for the SE part of Portland. They had computers available too to internet. I'd recommend it to friends.

I loved the simplicity of staying at Bluebird. I was able to check myself in and out without needing to talk to anyone, and everything was as it should be: clean room, nice towels and toiletries, great bed. Location is in walking distance to nightlife and yummy restaurants, and if you're driving, street parking is easy to find. I stayed in the Gabriel Garcia-Marquez with a private bath and it should be noted that this room adjoins the kitchen which can get noisy in the morning when people are getting breakfast. Also, the floors are a little creaky which could disturb your sleep if someone's walking around at night or early morning.

Charming, comfortable, fully stocked kitchen, very clean, lovely guests and friendly staff...excellent food and great coffee a short walk away, with a surprise tour of Stumptown Coffee! Will definately stay here again...

Our weekend away in Portland would not have been the same without our quaint little room at the Bluebird! In a lovely neighbourhood full of heritage homes, the guesthouse immediately became our home away from home. Bagels, muffins, organic fruit and tea every morning in the breakfast nook was the perfect way to start our day. And after a day spent vintage shopping and exploring Powell books, it was the perfect place to come back to for an afternoon nap before heading out to many of the surrounding local restaurants or for a night out. We stayed the Elliot Smith downstairs, it was quiet, bed was comfortable, and the room was small but just big enough for two. The complimentary bath robes came in handy when you had to run upstairs to use the bathrooms as well! The house was full when we stayed and there was never a problem waiting for a bathroom either. On our next visit to Portland, we’ll definitely be staying there again!
