Independence House Bed & Breakfast

Recently we traveled from Hawaii to take our son to college at Western Oregon University in Monmouth, OR. We couldn't have asked for a more comfortable, enjoyable, convenient and quaint B & B! Cheryl was so welcoming after our long journey--the perfect hostess! Loved the hospitality--wine, cheese & fruit upon arrival, the delicious home-cooked breakfasts and the many other wonderful touches that were so appreciated by our family. Cheryl also has a wealth of knowledge about this area in Oregon which was very helpful. We highly recommend the Independence House B & B to anyone who wants a memorable and restful stay!

My daughter and came to check out Western OR University and needed a place close by to stay. Independence House is only 2 miles from the college. Cheryl is a wonderful hosted, continually checking in to see how she can best meet your needs (even before you arrive). She greeted us with Wine & lemonade, cheese & fruit, along with some local restaurant menus and directions to local spots. Her breakfasts are better than any 5 star restaurant and she gave us a baggie to take our uneaten muffins with us to snack on later. Her homemade bread brought back wonderful memories of my grandmothers bread. We had brought our laptop with us and Cheryl made sure we were able to get squared away with her password and also had a mini fridge for guests to help themselves to drinks and to put dinner leftovers in. All in all, a wonderful time at Independence House. The only negative, is the funny little latch on the bathroom door that was a challenge at times. THANK YOU CHERYL!

My girlfriend and I stayed here after a day of bicycling from Portland and it was perfect. Great breakfast and Cheryl was super helpful with all of our bike equipment. She even gave us some first aid stuff with our wine and cheese when we got in since my girlfriend had scraped up her knee earlier that day. Highly recommended! Thank you Cheryl!

Fantastic relaxation spot. Great accommodations! Friendly atmosphere! Wonderful inn-keeper! My dear friend and I experienced the perfect get-a-way location to relax and rejuvenate ourselves. Innkeeper, Cheryl, provided the most delicious gourmet breakfast served on a beautifully set table with china and crystal. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. Cheryl not only provided limitless information on all the great places to eat and fun things to do in and around Independence, but also directed us to wineries that produce wines that even satisfied my palate (which isn’t easy). I look forward to a return visit.

Need a place to just chill and reconnect with a friend? This is it. Just returned from 4 days with a long time friend (40 years). She lives in Oregon and I live in Nevada. It was a "spur of the moment" trip but Cheryl, the owner, was able to handle all our needs. We both needed to just have some time to ourselves, to relax, talk, laugh and cry. Cheryl gave us that place. She is warm and friendly and has created the environment we needed. She provided delicious breakfasts, a wonderful box lunch and directions and suggestions for places to go. We also had lots of laughter thanks to Cheryl. Even convinced her to sit down and play Triminoes with us. We will be going back when the weather is warmer (did not see the sun) and do some outdoor activities. May even take our husbands next time.

This B&B reminded us of the farm in up state New York where my mother grew up and we spent many happy times. I has a very warm feel of a lived in house.We also liked the location because it is so close to many other things to see and do and the town was easy to walk around and spend time.

Cheryl really pays attention to the details that make a stay special. A rose at the doorway of your room, chocolates and bing cherries greet you, delicious breakfasts beautifully garnished and served; wine on the porch in the afternoon. Wonderful stay!

This bed and breakfast I highly recommend. The house is very pretty and romantic. Garden beautiful and don't ever miss the breakfast!

Our stay at the Independence House was a delightful experience. The setting and ambience of the inn was ideal for a weekend away. We stayed with Chery Gaston in Independence, OR for a friend's wedding. The inn was spotless and beautiful, the room was great -- but what really made our visit was Cheryl -- She is terrific and a great cook.

We had our first wedding anniversary here , were met with wine & cheese at the door. Cheryl thinks of everything! Coffee in the AM, homemade bread and an incredible breakfast!

This was a friendly, comfortable, delightful place to stay for a weekend of exploration of the Oregon wine country.

Run by a smart, hospitable woman, the inn was a perfect place to stay as we biked the area. Cheryl was very helpful and supportive of our biking needs. Her breakfasts were top-notch and willed us through the miles!

The innkeeper was so kind. I was not feeling well and she wanted to make me chicken soup. Really went out of her way to make us feel at home. Great location - near the wine country and Oregon State. Would definitely stay here again.

We've stayed at a lot of bed and breakfasts (about five per year for the last four years) and this one is our favorite. The house itself is on the historic register, but not particulary architecturally interesting, and the rooms are pretty standard bed and breakfast rooms with a shared bathroom. (Lace and teddy bears abound.) But what makes this B and B truly shine is the owner's attention to detail and fantastic service. When we arrived, the owner, Cheryl, greeted us with wine, crackers, cheese, and pepperoni. She recommended good local restaurants and directed us to several regional attractions (wineries, etc.) The inn is full of current Smithsonian and National Geographic magazines, as well as board games and paperback books, giving the inn a cozy feel and tempting travelers to spend lazy days indoors. Cheryl left a dish of chocolates on the nightstand and a basket of fresh fruit on the desk every evening. She also left a jug of ice water and glasses in case we became thirsty during the night. Cheryl creates fantastic breakfast fare. Breakfasts are three-course affairs that during our visit consisted of fruit salad, homemade pastry, and a main course that included a breakfast meat and an entree. Day one was apple crisp, homemade cranberry bread, and french toast with bacon. Day two was grape fruit salad, blueberry muffins, latkes (potato pancakes) and a delicious asperigus ham concoction. Cheryl seems willing to tailor breakfast to guests' dietary needs as well -- she asked what we liked and disliked, and tailored a meal to our preferences. Independence is about fifteen minutes' drive from Salem and about fifteen minutes' drive from some nice wineries. It's well-located if you're visiting friends and family in Salem.

We enjoyed a wonderful 22nd anniversary. We enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere, the books, the food. Cheryl, the innkeeper, treated us with sparkling cider, coffee in the mornings, as well as a gourmet meal!

Innkeeper Cheryl did a truly wonderful job of making us feel welcome and comfortable. Fantastic food and attention to details (fresh flowers, wine in the p.m.) made us know that we will return!

Stay here if you have the chance!!! My husband and I had never stayed at a B&B before being guests at the Independence House. What a great first experience. We had just flown in from Chicago that day and were heading to a wedding that night. Cheryl was so nice and brought up some wine and nice snacks to our room. I think knowing that we had not gotten any food on the plane. The room was great, and the bed super comfy. Breakfast the next morning was worth the room price on its own. This B&B is a great value for the service received. Cheryl is a great host, around just when you need something, not around when you don't. If you are in the area, stay here.

The reason I will return is the owner, Cheryl. She was awesome - "catered" to me and made me feel special. Cheryl is an excellent cook and prepared wonderful breakfasts.

A stay far above our expectations. The inviting wrap around deck lured you into a wonderful relaxing inn. Cheryl was a gracious host and the food was terrific. We will be back!

We arrived later than we expected on our tandem bicycle. It was getting dark and Cheryl, concerned we hadn't eaten, had fabulous pasta with mushrooms, pesto and a pepper from her garden ready. She is marvellous company for a meal! The breakfast was to die for - with her own baked muffins and bread - and herbs from the garden in the main course. Laverne and Shirley (Cheryl's cats) are there to round out the welcome. We highly recommend this hidden jewel in Independence.

It was our second stay at the Independence House Bed & Breakfast. Once again, we had a wonderful experience. The breakfast was wonderful and Cheryl is such a great host. We plan to go back next year.

My wife and I are professional photographers from Bend and came to Independence to cover a High School Reunion. We opted to stay the night rather than drive home after the event. After a quick search on the internet, we discovered the Independence House B & B. What a find! The B & B and our gracious host, Cheryl, definitely exceeded our expectations! Only after one night's stay, we felt that Cheryl became one of our good friends. You can tell she sure enjoys pampering her guests. When making the reservation, Cheryl asked if we had any dietary restrictions. My wife has many food allergies and Cheryl was very kind to plan a menu to fit those needs. Our breakfast included sauteed nectarines with fresh cream and cinnamon, fried polenta with golden raisins and nuts, turkey sausage and fresh fruit. What a way to start the day! She greeted us with a welcome glass of local Pinot Gris and had some chilled waiting for us in our room after our job. We loved our accommodations and are already thinking of planning a longer trip to enjoy Independence at a more leisurely pace. The town is quaint and there's no lack of activities. On our way back to Bend, we stopped at Silver Falls State Park, a short distance from Independence and explored and admired the many waterfalls in the park. Highly recommended! I was in town for a wedding at the college a couple of weeks ago and rather than drive back to Seattle late in the evening I opted for staying the night. I feel very lucky to have found the Independence B&B! It was just a few miles from the wedding reception in the heart of a historic town filled with antique shopping and good food. I recommend lunch or dinner at J Bellas for Italian! My room was bright and sunny and reminded me of beachside cottage. Cheryl had fresh cherries waiting for me when I arrived and ice water in my room in the evening. I awoke to the smell of fresh baked bread and Cheryl was very accomodating to give me an early breakfast so that I could begin my trek back to Seattle. Breakfast was SO good ~ homemade blueberry muffins, homemade bread, fresh fruits from the market and lovely hot egg dish. Beautiful china and flatware adorned the table as if I were at a 5 star restaurant! An elegant setting but still warm and inviting. Thanks again Cheryl for a lovely stay away from home. Mary J

We stayed at one hotel and two other b&bs on our trip to the Great Northwest and this outshone them all. Though the rooms are a little small and we shared a bath (plans to expand in January!) it was more than made up for by the gracious host, Cheryl. She was a mine of information about the area and made us feel very welcome. The breakfast was wonderful and her little touches about the house made us feel at home. You won't find a more pleasant and comfortable place than Independance House. We will definitely return!

Our experience at Independence House was absolutely fantastic. Cheryl has a wonderful knack for making you feel welcome and cared for. At some B&B's you really feel like you are intruding in someone's home, but that is not the case here. She's like a favorite aunt who knows what you like and makes sure to have it on hand, but always gives you your space. Breakfasts were fantastic and very generous. I don't think we ever quite managed to clean our plates despite the deliciousness of the food. The location and atmosphere are very peaceful and serene and the place has a lot of personality. Nice touches are the welcome wine & fruit basket we received in our room, bowls of chocolate in each room, and the relaxing front porch available for sitting, chatting, reading, or our favorite, card playing. There are several nice options for dining lunch & dinner nearby, and Cheryl will give you good recommendations if asked. Not only do we hope to return, but we'll be sure to recommend this gem to our friends and family visiting the area.

This B&B is a gem! The service is absolutely outstanding, the yard is lovely, the hostess a delight (as were the other guests), and the food delectable. And as an added pleasure, among the antiques in the decor, check out her restored steamer trunks! Cheryl has so many creative ideas, all put to good use in this charming facility.

Cheryl was a fabulous host! I happened to be the only guest during my stay, but I got the feeling Cheryl makes all of her guests feel special. I was pleasantly surprised by the welcome wine and fruit tray on my arrival. It got better from there with the multi course hot breakfast she served everyday. No skimping on food or service here! ;-) Cheryl was always so helpful. The house is charming and so is Cheryl. I'd recommend staying at the Independence House B&B. The town of Independence was quaint and quiet down by the river. The new Raging River Steak house was a nice surprise. I enjoyed the 6 block walk from the B&B to downtown Independence.

Warm, funny lovely welcome; Beautifully maintained Victorian home yet comfy; Each room was special - tried two out of three and am coming back for the third! Breakfast was the most delicious I've EVER had - and the warmth of the Innkeeper Cheryl was like coming home.

We had a fabulous time at this bed and breakfast. The house is beautiful and the hostess Cheryl Gaston has done some very interesting things with antiques. There are several antique stores nearby with quite reasonable prices. This was our first bed and breakfast experience and it was quite delightful. The hightlight was the wonderful breakfasts that she served. We were there for five days and we were served a different breakfast each morning. The meal started with some fresh fruit sometimes served with a yogurt sauce. There was always a fresh home baked bread with the first course and then the main course would be served. My favorite was an asparagus and mushroom frittata. With the main course came a second type of home baked bread, and of course, all of the orange juice and coffee you could drink. I appreciated that the bathroom had a basket for each room, she has three, for all of your bathroom supplies so you could leave your things without worry. The bathroom had an old fashioned tub with a shower. It was a claw foot tub and it might be hard for an elderly or handicapped person to step into it. The rooms were lovely although a tad on the small side if you were planning to spend a large amount of your day there. The bed was extremely comfortable, with lots of pillows. We highly recommend this bed and breakfast.
