About

If you are an Urban Farming pioneer, enthusiast, or gonna-be, a Cultural warrior, jammer, or creator or perhaps a Thinker, Poet, Artist or Dreamer. Then GREAT! We want to meet you and share the wonders of how being connected to one's food creates community, beauty, healing and security. We can't wait to meet you!!!

However, we are not a hotel with air conditioning, nor are we a Bed & Breakfast with doilies and syrup-ey sweet hospitality. We are a clean simple Farm community and we love meeting warm, open and creative people. If this all sounds fine to you then this might be a really good fit and we look forward to hosting you. If not, you might be happier somewhere else.

Tierra Soul is located in the fun and hip Mississippi Avenue Historic District ~ a couple blocks from boutiques and coffee shops, restaurants and close to public transit.

Large house surrounded by magical urban farm (sometimes we call it an un-farm), Founded by Mama and Papa Arias and their two little ones in Spring 2010. Since then Tierra Soul has evolved into community endeavor. We have had a host of interns and WWOOFers. Together we have tended dairy and fiber goats, ducks (including the famous Hettie Quackers) and chickens for eggs and meat, honey bees and an expanding perennial fruit, flower, herb and vegetable garden. Join us for a warm and fun time whether or not you have children. House has lots of communal space to enjoy with a front porch, out-door fire pit, and piano! We also have WIFI.

Super cool place to stay in Portland

4.0 on December 01, 2013

We sure enjoyed our time at Tierra Soul. Beautiful family, very helpful and welcoming. Great location to Mississippi Ave and great local breweries, coffee houses and restaurants. If you're looking for something a little different in your accommodations or want to experience a little urban farmhouse on your trip to Portland... this is a must.

never fancy, always real

I first came to this special little urban farm through wwoofing. I was welcomed authentically and right away they asked me what I would like to get out of my experience there. By the end of my three months, I had learned everything I'd hoped to. Since then, I have been back many times as a farm-stayer and as a guest to Tierra Soul events. This family and sweet little farm appeal to special folk and is perfect for people like me who like to hang out with goats, hear the sounds of children around and snuggle into a cup of tea.

A great fit for our family!

My husband, 7-yearl old son, and I stayed in The Corner Caravan for 3 nights during the summer of 2012. We had a great time! We were on a little permaculture/farming tour and were thrilled to find like-minded folks to stay with in Portland. My son was so excited to stay in the Caravan and it did not disappoint! We liked being able to cook for ourselves and were quite comfortable. Krista and David and their amazing children were kind and welcoming and have since become friends. Their daughter and our son played together for three days straight. Since staying in the Caravan my husband and I have each returned to Tierra Soul once and stayed in the Farmhouse. It’s beautiful and creatively decorated. And most importantly, it’s authentic and driven by David and Krista’s desire to live in accordance with their values and meet others who want to do the same. We will absolutely stay with them again the next time we’re in Portland!

Urban Oasis

This place is such an urban sanctuary in the already-über funky city of Portland. Felt so welcome and at home in the sprawling permaculture veggie gardens and backyard that feels more like a farm! These guys really have the good like cranking and are so up for sharing it with the wider world, it's inspirational! Thanks for an awesome stay and for making us feel so at home!

Funky!

Definitely not your typical B&B! The Tierra Soul Urban Farmhouse is alternative lodging. No doilys, no fancy tea times, just a comfortable place to stay, on a farm in the middle of the city. David and Krista are wonderful hosts who made our visit here feel like staying in the home of good friends. Very homey, informal, friendly feel to it. They don't serve food, but lots of good eats are just a few blocks away, in the Mississippi Avenue neighborhood. If you are not into fancy, but looking for a comfortable alternative place to stay in Portland, this is your place.

As good as it gets

First, I didn't rate "dining" because, except for a friendly bowl of oatmeal, I didn't eat at Tierra Sol. Krista and David are correct--you'll mostly want to taste the variety of Portland's cuisine, though I'm sure the B&B's food would be excellent if you wanted to try it. This experience really helped shape my stay in Portland--a visit to family--in the most positive way I can imagine. It was like time traveling, in a way, back to my own lost youth when everyone wanted to live "off the land" and "off the grid" and be positive. In those days, we were a bit too naive and impatient to pull it off, though there were exceptions. David and Krista (and their extraordinarily charming children, Fia and Xoxo) make you feel part of their family in the best ways. The place is lovely, informal, well kept (always smells like something good is cooking!), quiet, welcoming. I could go on and on about the wonderful conversations-on-the-fly we've had--discussions ranging from issues of animal maintenance to the current state of American philosophy--but it would take too much space. I can say from my heart that these young people--unlike myself and many of the friends of my youth--have got it right this time. Tierra Sol combines all the best ingredients of Portland life and serves them up as a delicious soul ragout. HIGHLY recommended!

About the innkeepers

We love kids and urban farming, raw milk, cooking together, permaculture, making Kombucha and Sauerkraut and learning together. David is an inventor/artist musician-in-another-life and amazing handyman. Krista is a poet-philosopher, midwife-minister, chef. Fia is our loquacious eight year old budding herbalist and 4 year old Xoco is our silly monkey obsessed with power tools and kitchen gadgetry.
