    A last-minute adventure.

    September 02, 2012

My fiancé and I made last minute reservations while on a spur of the moment vacation. Evelyn was incredibly accommodating, allowing us to check in late and offered us breakfast at 9:30 (we were able to sleep in!) We enjoyed a wonderful breakfast (fresh whipped cream, and she was willing to work with a vegetarian) and an incredibly comfortable, private room. We loved it here and hope to be back!

Broken toilet, broken shower, insufficient hot water, drivers license not returned

    August 18, 2012

After receiving our visa payment and providing my drivers license for ID Evelyn, the proprietor gave us a choice of 7:30 or 8:00 AM breakfast, as that was when the other guests wanted it. When we protested Evelyn told us that we were expected at 2 PM (the current time was 5 PM) and inquired as to whether we had stayed at a B&B before. I ensured Evelyn that we have been staying at B&Bs for years and had never been offered breakfast so early. After I reminded her that we are on vacation she relented. We were showed a room with dark shag w/w carpets floor, walls and ceiling. We were told that the shower worked but that there was a part on order. We later discovered that the shower only worked when we held the center knob out. We ran out of hot water during our second shower. We were told the toilet (with 30 year old plumbing and undersized seat) worked but that there was a part on order. The toilet worked once. We called Evelyn and she turned on the toilet taps. 30 mins later we called her again and she fixed the toilet lever. In the morning the toilet failed again, and I had only luke warm water to shave. Evelyn told us a second part was on order for the toilet. I confronted Evelyn and she gave us another room for our second night with updated plumbing which was most suitable. The following day we travelled to Portland and I discovered that my drivers license was missing. I called Evelyn had she confirmed that she had it. The courier fee cost me $40. Garth, Vancouver BC

    Innkeeper Response
From the beginning Country Retreat Bed & Breakfast attempted to accommodate these guests in every way. The list of inaccuracies in this review is long. We haven’t had much experience with those who are unhappy with our establishment (as you can see by the other comments). Many different times for breakfast are offered and no one is forced to any specific time other than breakfast is only served until 10am because checkout time is 11am. Check-in is from 3pm-7pm. Anyone can arrive at any time, just like to know when someone will be later than 7pm so that we can be available for them. The part on order was for another bathroom. The Aztec Room shower worked and continues to work just fine, hot water and all. We have a family member who is a retired plumber and checked everything out. Everything was working upon their arrival. We always want to accommodate our guests and that is why we moved them to another room. When he called asking about this license, I did not know where it was at that time, I told him, that both rooms had been cleaned and no license was found but that I would look for it. We looked everywhere for his license, he is very fortunate because we found it in a plant next to the check-in desk. He must have dropped it there when I handed his drivers license and credit card back to him at check-in. I called him back, I asked him how he would like me to send it, he wanted me to mail it to him express to Canada. If you ask me, he’s lucky that I found his license.

    Thoroughly enjoyed our stay

    November 16, 2011

My husband and I stayed here on our trip up the coast. As recommended we stayed in the Aztec room, which was cozy and retro (not sure what went wrong for the folks in the review below, but we didn't experience the same issues; toilet flushed on first try, bathtub drained, and the room was temperate). The breakfast was substantial; our only complaint was that we couldn't finish. The hostess was knowledgable about the local region and prepared a sack lunch for our hike on the pacific coastal trail. Recommended for a peaceful and secluded coastal getaway.

    Don't stay here

    September 08, 2011

Lets start with our arrival...She did not answer the door and we almost left, and should have. However, we did walk around back and finally found the hostess. She told us to meet her back at the front door, where she told us we had to remove our shoes before entering. This is a firm rule, even if you are going back and forth bringing your luggage in. She showed us to our room which was an uncomfortable 81 degrees. She had the heater on with the outside temp at 85 degrees. We asked if she could turn off the heater and turn on the air conditioning which was on in the rest of the house. We also asked if we could open the slider to get a little air and were told it could only be open during daylight hours. She did turn on the air for us, but turned it off during the night and we woke up in an 80+ degree room in the middle of the night. The jacuzzi can only be used during daylight hours too. As far as the Aztec room goes, there is golden long shag carpet on the floor, walls and ceiling. If you have allergies, you don't belong here. The bathroom has a avocado green sink, tub and toilet. The shower does not drain well, so be prepared to stand in 4 inches of water. The "round" black toilet seat on the "elongated" avocado toilet does not acommodate the average human behind and you must flush between 4 to 6 times to even get toilet paper to go down. This room and bathroom have not been updated since the 70s. This is not a suite and this is not a B&B. The owner is a nice elderly woman that should not be in this business. She cooked a marginal breakfast and we left while she was still on an extended phone call. That which is represented on the website is not what you get.

    Innkeeper Response
It was hot that day, however, I had the air conditoner thermostat set at 68 degrees before they arrived and it remained on that setting until after they checked out the next morning. Guests are allowed to open their doors and use the Jacuzzi any time during their stay. The Aztec room shower drains properly and the commode flushes just fine. Their breakfast menu was: coffee, tea, orange juice, a large platter of fresh fruit, 3 thick slices of bacon each, home fries, eggs as they liked them and home made biscuits with butter and jam. The gentlemen ate all of his breakfast and some of hers. Our guests come first. We tell each guest after checking in to let us know if there are any problems with their room or anything else. We are always available to help whenever needed. These guests did not complain to us about anything other than it was hot outside.
