My wife and I had to travel from Syracuse to Rochester for car service. We decided to extend our stay for some much needed alone time and since we enjoy the city so much. At the last minute, I remembered that I had wanted to visit the Ellwanger Estate last spring during the Lilac Festival. However, since "last minute" is a recurring theme in my planning, it was all booked (on this visit, I saw why: it is phenomenally located within walking distance to the festival). The house is lovely and the rooms comfortable, arranged with a very refreshing eye toward blending convenience and comfort. However, the best part of the visit has to be the innkeeper, Rosemary. I've read other reviews of the establishment, and many raved about her, so I was not surprised. But truthfully, she is a very interesting person, whom we found great to talk with. We'd go back just visit her! The Ellwanger will not disappoint.

Had a great 3 night stay - wish we could've stayed longer. Rosemary is a gracious, helpful host, and a great cook. Rooms was comfortable, clean and very quiet even being on a busy street. Location worked well for our needs. Would recommend Ellwanger for anyone who enjoys a quality B&B experience.

I'm not generally one given to hyperbole, but the Ellwanger exceeded expectations. From the gracious hosts to the granduer of the common areas, this Bed and Breakfast can not be beat if you've an occasion to treat yourself in Rochester, New York. -The Nascones, Pittsburgh, PA

We spent one night here in the Traveler's Rest suite. All the rooms were occupied that night but we didn't hear a thing from other rooms because the house is very spacious. It's very clean throughout and Rosemary has thought of all kinds of things to make your stay there perfect. The room had robes for us, nice amenities in the bathroom, an iPod docking station and was very tastefully appointed. The ground floor of the Inn is huge with a number of seating areas. There was a table laid out with home made sweet and savoury snacks when we arrived as well as the makings for coffee/tea as well as a wine chiller and glasses so we sat out on one of the covered porches with a glass of wine and watched deer wander through the grounds. The beautiful historic Ellwanger Gardens, are adjacent to the main property and they were just beautiful to walk through. Breakfast was a beautiful meal, not your usual bacon and eggs and Rosemary was a wonderful hostess. We found the location good as downtown Rochester was a short drive away but the immediate neighbourhood was lovely with other large estates nearby, lots of trees and gardens and it was about a 3 minute drive to the historic Corn Hill area so a very accessible place to be. It was a pleasure (and good value) to spend time in this lovely place and we'd definitely go back.

I recently (July 2014) went to Rochester to work with colleagues at the Medical Centre, and found out about Ellwanger via Tripadvisor. I cannot overstate just how good my stay was! The rooms are beautiful and eclectic - there's even one with birds on the walls and a book which has their descriptions and birdcalls! I stayed in the Traveller's Rest, a beautiful big room with an exceptionally comfortable bed and great workdesk. The surrounding gardens are amazing considering how close you are to the centre of the city - on my last morning there was even a deer lazing on the grass next to the flowerbed. Breakfast was fantastic value, so good that my colleagues came for a birthday 5 course breakfast. Surprisingly they didn't even know Ellwanger existed, but their wives made them promise that they'd take them there for a special occasion! The last thing I'll say is what a great host Rosemary was, she really did her utmost to make it the most pleasant stay possible. The little touches like putting my wet, smelly running shoes in the washer and dryer while I was at work so I could wear them the next day made my stay completely perfect. Very, very highly recommended!

My husband and I got married this past weekend at the Ellwanger Estate. I could not have asked for a more perfect event! Rosemary was very helpful in everything she did to make the day just as I imagined it. We spent the evening in the Travelers Rest room. Also a delight! Rosemary made us a wonderful breakfast in the morning. We will definitely be returning. I highly recommend both staying at the Ellwanger Estate or if you are looking for a place for a small intimate wedding this is the place!

This is the third time my husband and I have stayed in the Woodland Suite, and I think the Ellwanger Estate gets better each time. Rosemary's thorough, and very thoughtful, hospitality are reason enough to make a trip to Rochester. This time the peonies were blooming, little pears and peaches had appeared on the trees (to enable the wonderful pear butter!), and the grounds and surrounding blocks were enchanting. Breakfasts are delicious, and the fruit, cookies and selection of tea and coffees through the day are delightful. We always find a new favorite place to sit and read; inside in the fall, on the porch this time. We may have to find a new excuse to make the trip to Rochester, since our family is moving south. Thank you, Rosemary!

The estate is indeed very elegant, and my girlfriend and I felt very welcomed and cared for. Rosemary is an excellent host, and made sure our stay was a great one. I would highly recommend the Ellwanger to anyone who desires a quiet retreat, whether you are visiting town, or are even a resident of Rochester. A hidden gem!

A peaceful place to retreat in the city of Rochester. Rosemary, the owner/innkeeper made us feel as though we were being welcomed into her own home. We felt welcomed, attended to, and enjoyed delicious home-made breakfasts. Definitely worth repeating! Helen and Steve Kingston, Ontario March 8-10,2014
