What a relief to enjoy an antique filled home which doesn't require one to tip toe thro' the tchotkes. Formerly an antique collector, our host Roland has a museum of enchanting pieces for viewing. The ingeniously juxtaposed private baths ensure that no guest is bothered by noise from an adjoining room. The rooms are bright, bright, clean, clean, and thoughtfully detailed. They are, thankfully, free of the gloom, fringe, decorative pillows and clutter that so often presents hurdles to work around with luggage and personal effects. Instead, there is plenty of room on bedside tables for books, writing materials and your own digital equipment. Our opera group was warmly accommodated. Some of the best news is that Roland and his business partner, Steve, anticipate opening a gourmet restaurant for intimate dining. The food will be wonderful, judging by the breakfast. We learned that Steve is an organist, pianist, choral director, and Episcopal priest which certainly adds class to any gathering. As two of us were there to work on music using the baby grand supplied by Steve, this added meaning and enjoyment to our stay. Yes, as TripAdvisor noted, the outside still needs painting and freight and passenger trains rumble rhythmically by. None of us objected and instead welcomed the trains and far, far, far in the distance, that "diminished seventh" train whistle which I only heard once . . . Comfortable beds, fluffy towels, lots of fast, hot water, and superbly accommodating hosts ensured a memorable week with Glimmerglass Opera..

Spent two nights at Portabello Inn. They were wonderfully friendly and accommodating since we arrived later than expected. The breakfasts were wonderful. Great location in historic Herkimer.

What a refreshing place - there are few pleasant places to stay in Herkimer. Roland is an amazing innkeeper, so accommodating and a delight to know. Our room was elegant. The sheets were even ironed. Breakfast was delicious: quiche, homemade muffins. There was a wonderful sauce made of Herkimer blueberries. We were in the area on business, and Roland was so kind as to make early breakfast for us both days. We encourage you to visit.

This is out third stay at this fine establishment, and we love it more each time we arrive. The innkeepers, Roland and Steve go out of their way to make sure our stay is unforgettable, and they deliver every time! I lived in this area for many years, and now when we come back to visit, we couldn't even think of staying anywhere else. I guess family members could put us up, but oncewe cross the threshold of the Portobello Inn, we know we are home. And the reason we feel this way is because the innkeepers are warm, caring individuals whose sole purpose is to make sure our every need is attended to.....and trust us....our needs are plenty!! Thank You Roland and Steve, and thank you to the Portobello Inn for accepting us into your "family"!!

The room was nicely appointed and very comfortable. The Innkeeper, Roland, was very friendly but not intrusive. The breakfast was to die for and exquisity presented. My mouth waters thinking about it. I'm one who prefers motels to B&B's, but I can't wait to go back to Portobello Inn in the Spring.

I am a repeat customer at the Portobello. Rowland and Steve are the perfect hosts. This trip was due to a death in the family and they accommodated my needs on short notice, in spite of having a full house. They were able to arrange guests so that I wouldn't have to change rooms and all below the price I expected to pay. While I didn't take advantage of the fabulous breakfasts that they prepare, in the past I have - Roland is an excellent Chef. I recommend the Portobello to anyone who appreciates the Victorian past.

Our stay at Portobello was magnificent. From arrival to departure Roland was most cordial and accommodating. Fresh bing cherries, homemade brownies, and fresh coffee awaited us. Soft music, beautiful artistry and antiques adorned each spotless room. After comfortable and relaxing evenings, we awakened looking forward to an amazing table presence of prepared morning fare consisting of fresh fruits, and muffins. There were pancakes (on one occasion) and a fluffy egg & cheese souffle (on the other). We were able to purchase beautiful antique trinkets and Roland even gave me his recipe for those fudgy brownies. Upon leaving a baby rabbit feasting on cherry tomatoes was our farewell glimpse of a wonderful, very reasonably priced stay. We would most emphatically recommend a stay here, and hope to return. Thanx ever so much Roland!! Carmelina & Stacey from Connecticut
