Stayed two nights in a 3rd floor room with two beds. Large bathroom with clawfoot tub. Breakfast included eggs made to order and homemade bread. The historic inn is furnished with antiques. Annapolis Royal is a beautiful historic town. Go to the Farmers Market if you have a chance.

Having been lucky enough to get married at this beautiful place my wife and I returned for an anniversary stay. Hillsdale House never fails to disappoint, from the immaculate rooms, fantastic and exceptionally friendly service to the most incredible breakfast to complete any stay. I look forward to visiting again in the future. Such an incredible experience for amazing value, definitely well worth the visit.

We had a wonderful mother-daughter getaway... And Hillsdale House was an important part of our wonderful memories. Mum so enjoyed a soak in the clawfoot tub, and the breakfast was blog worthy! Our hostess was so friendly and kind. Five Stars!
Thanks for the great comments. We are very pleased to have been able to be a part of your getaway, and hope that you plan to return again soon to do it again.

This Inn was clean and the location was quite convenient for walks into the town. Breakfast was always limited to eggs or one other choice but was tasty. Room furniture was dated and quite uncomfortable. There were no drinks or snacks in room or in common areas of the Inn which was highly unusual for a stay in any Inn.
We are most disappointed to learn that this guest was not pleased with their stay at our property. The representation of our breakfast offering does seem a little unfair. We in fact offer a full hot 'made-to-order' breakfast each morning, which includes fresh baked muffins, a choice of 4 juices, fresh brewed coffee, a selection of teas, a choice of eggs any style with ham or bacon and home made Nova Scotia brown bread toast, or French Toast, Belgian Waffles or Buttermilk Pancakes (depending on the day) topped with fresh local berries and served with Nova Scotia Maple Syrup. We also try to accommodate any dietary concerns when possible. We do make coffee or tea available upon request throughout the day and evening, and we are fully licensed to serve alcoholic beverages. All of this information is included in our in-room guest directory. It is unfortunate that more information was not provided to indicate what room the guest stayed in so that we could investigate further the comment regarding our furnishing, as this is the first such comment we have received in the 9 seasons we have been operating the Inn.

Hillsdale House Inn is located on a tree lined street with many beautiful large old homes . It is one of those beautiful large old homes . The entry way to the Inn is a 'wow' with two very nice sitting rooms on either side . Our room - I believe it was room 10 but don't hold me to that - was at the back of the house , on the 2nd level , and was very well appointed and spacious . The only meal served is breakfast BUT it is a full breakfast and one that makes it easy to skip lunch . If you are visiting Annapolis Royal , this is the place to stay . Jack & Faye

The Hillside House Inn is a high end B&B at very reasonable prices. The service was excellent, staff pleasant and the breakfast was delicious. I will definitley stay there again.

The staff were very accommodating and especially helpful after the town and most of the province lost power to due Post Tropical Storm Arthur. Although power wasn't restored during our stay, the breakfeast cooked on the BBQ was excellent. I could not tell the difference between one cooked in the kitchen. Also the candelite laterns were nice touch to use in our rooms at night. I the end we never missed having power other then a warm shower. By the way you need to checkout out the graveyard tour at the Fort. It's very entertaining and not morbid in the slightest. My review of Nova Scotia Power however is less kind.

We stayed two nights at the Hillsdale House and were very pleased. The service was friendly and breakfast delicious. After the second night we had to leave early to catch the ferry to New Brunswick and we were given a sack breakfast to take with us. Thanks so much!

This is a beautifully maintained historic inn. Rooms are very comfortable and tastefully decorated. Extensive grounds are well maintained and a delightful spot to spend a few hours reading or relaxing in the shade. Staff was helpful and friendly. While far more enjoyable than a modern hotel, be aware that this is not your typical B&B experience. The breakfast room has many separate tables, so different parties rarely sat together and had little interaction. For us, meeting other travelers is one of the reasons we choose to stay at B&Bs, and we missed that experience at Hillsdale. Breakfast itself was good, but a bit unimaginative by B&B standards. Overall a very nice place, and we definitely would stay here again.
Thank you for your comments and we are happy that you enjoyed your stay with us. We are sorry to hear that our dining room and breakfast menu did not meet with your expectations. Our inn has 13 guest rooms and is classed as a Bed & Breakfast Inn; with that in mind we have arranged the seating in our dining room to accommodate both the Inn traveller and the Bed & Breakfast traveller. We provide several tables that accommodate up to 6 guests for those that choose to interact with other guests and then smaller tables for 2 for those travellers wishing to experience a more intimate setting. Our breakfast menu starts each morning with fresh baked muffins and two made to order options. Each morning we offer homemade Nova Scotia brown bread toast, eggs any style that you choose, Ham or Bacon. In addition we provide an alternative option that may consist of Belgium Waffles, Orange French Toast, Buttermilk Pancakes or another seasonal options. We feel that providing guests with an option is an important component of our service.

My husband and I came to Annapolis Royal to golf. Staying overnight at the Hillsdale House Inn was a very pleasant experience. Our room had beautiful old world charm but included a modern t.v. The breakfast, which was served in a lovely dining room, was delicious. The owners and housekeeper were a pleasure to deal with. I would definitely recommend this B & B to anyone.
Thanks for taking the time to share your impression of our Inn with others. It is great to hear that you enjoyed your time with us, and we hope you will return sometime soon.

Such a great place to stay! A great deal and the service is amazing. So clean and the breakfast was delicious. Homemade warm muffin in the morning made the stay. The room was very romantic and the soaker tub was a huge bonus. Will be going back for sure!
Great to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you plan to return. Thanks for taking the time to share your comments.

Stay included the Stuart MacLean show at the King's Theatre. It was a terrific value and a great show. The hosts were most helpful in offering to make dinner reservations in order for guests to make the showtime of 7:00 pm. Breakfast was excellent as always. Highly recommend the Hillsdale House Inn.

We stayed only one night at the Hillsdale House Inn, but we would have loved to stay longer! Val and Paul greeted us with friendliness and warmth, despite the fact we arrived on Thanksgiving in the middle of their preparations for a family gathering. Our room and washroom were both spotless, and included complimentary amenities. The location was excellent, within walking distance to restaurants and attractions. A wonderful experience overall and definitely worth a return stay.

Everything about the two nights at Hillsdale House was first rate. The innkeepers were friendly, helped with a medical problem, arranged for a wonderful whale watching trip and were perfect hosts! I could not have asked for more1

Hilsdale House is a Beautiful property located in the pleasant town of Annapolis Royal. The house is perfectly maintained with expansive garden just minutes walk from the Rose Gardens and restaurants and shops. The rooms are comfortable (loved the bath) and nicely decorated and breakfast was served in a formal dining room with 8 of us around a table, which made for some very interesting conversation. My only two caveats were the softness on the matress and the a/c closing off the bedroom window which made it necessary to cool the room when opening the window would have sufficed ... Lovely property in a lovely location.
5 on October 07, 2013
We only booked one night in Annapolis Royal and wished we had booked at least 2. The town is charming and very easy to walk. We enjoyed the Saturday market and checking out the water front along the paths at Fort Anne. The room at the Hillsdale house was beautiful and quiet. We had our one year old daughter with us and they were very accommodating. Breakfast was probably the best of our week long Tay in Nova Scotia, the muffins were delicious. I would highly recommend a stay here.

We stayed two nights in mid-Sept. The house was in a terrific location to explore the public gardens, the fort and town. We were given dining suggestions that were right on! Our room was spacious and comfy. The breakfast room was complete with English china and silver and each guest was offered a choice of two delicious selections, as well as homemade muffins. The ladies working the kitchen were especially friendly. I would recommend staying here if you are planning a trip to the area.

Hillsdale House Inn is absolutely wonderful and we really enjoyed our two days. A great location for walking around Annapolis Royal. The grounds are well landscaped and offered a great place to meet others, and sit and have a glass of wine before going to dinner. Our room was nicely furnished and the bed was very comfortable. The staff were attentive and friendly; Val provided great recommendations for dinner, and breakfast at the Inn was much more than we expected. We would highly recommend the Hillsdale House Inn.

5 on August 19, 2013
Hillsdale House Inn is a wonderful place to stay! My husband, grandson and I enjoyed this beautiful home and the very warm welcome from Val and Paul. Our room was beautifully decorated (and recently renovated), the bed was very comfortable, and the amenities in the room were a nice addition. Breakfast was delicious and the service was excellent. Val gave us a lot of suggestions for things to do and places to eat. She also gave us an early breakfast on our last day so we could make the ferry on time. When we inadvertently left two of our grandson’s jackets she was kind enough to mail them to us! Annapolis Royal is a town steeped in history and a most interesting place to visit. However the hospitality at the Hillsdale House is what made our visit to the town such a special and memorable one!

This is the second time we have stayed at Hillsdale House while visiting Annapolis Royal, and both times we have found it absolutely wonderful. The rooms are comfortable and beautifully furnished, the breakfasts terrific (fresh local blueberries and home-baked muffins when we were there), and the ambiance green and peaceful. The backyard has plenty of Adirondack chairs for sitting around in; the last morning we were there, I saw a doe and her fawn grazing right on the grounds. We'll stay there again if we get the chance.

We very much appreciate the guest taking the time to provide a review. We are a little confused that comments do not appear to be reflected on the overall rating. We stayed at Hillsdale House for three nights as part of a two week tour of Nova Scotia and prince Edward Island. Beautiful house and grounds in a marvellous town. Friendly, helpful owners and staff. Excellent breakfast. George V's bed was a little small and uncomfortable. We can certainly recommend it and would happily stay there again
5 on June 30, 2013
A wonderful experience at this old mansion. We stayed in the top floor of this house and enjoyed the surroundings and view and the quiet. Interesting grounds to wander and the town is a nice attraction too. We have stayed at other B & B's and the breakfast at this one was good. Given the size of the place which I believe houses 17 guests, it is not as intimate as some of the others we have stayed at. This is a positive and a negative as some people are not " morning people" so there is no need to be social when you dont feel like it. But the option is there to sit at a group table if you wish. One of the highlights of our stay was the Graveyard Tour which started at 9:30 and went to around 11:00. This took place just down the road and is not to be missed. A fascinating collection of stories and background on the Acadians was provided by the leader...an Acadian himself who was well versed in all aspects of history. We also had supper at a great place as well. Compose Restaurant offered a good selection of options to chose from.

We had an airy spacious bedroom with a king-size bed and a small but adequate bathroom with a shower; no space for a tub. The fresh air from open windows made the summer night comfortable for sleeping. The high ceilings and furnishings of the house contribute to its charm. Breakfast was delicious and the hospitality of the staff made us feel quite at home.

It was a very rainy weekend in Annapolis Royal, but the atmosphere & service at the Hillsdale Inn was great. I would highly recommend this as a destination.
4.4 on May 23, 2013
The thing about Hillsdale is that while the property is quite grand and formal-looking -- a huge Victorian house, surrounded by a vast lawn -- you can actually feel comfortable and at home. Breakfast was very nice each morning, and included in our rate, which made it a genuine bargain, too. Loved being walking distance (practically next door) to the Annapolis Royal gardens. The hosts were super-nice to our kids. Highly recommended.

An elegant and very comfortable Victorian inn. The staff is extremely friendly -- but not intrusive. The breakfast was one of the best! The inn is ideally located near to the historic gardens and to Fort Anne. A place to return to.
3.2 on September 20, 2012
This is a beautiful place. The staff are wonderful and the breakfast is very good. However, this is one of the smaller rooms and very cramped. However, it is the cheapest room. My rating is of the mattress in this room. It was the worst mattress my husband and I stayed in during our weeklong trip to Canada and we stayed in more modest and cheaper places. The mattress was like a trampoline., very soft, squishy and you could feel every move each other made. We clung to the sides to keep from rolling into each other. I suggest it be replaced.
We are most disappointed to learn that these guests found the bed to be uncomfortable. When it comes to mattress comfort preferences very and we have in fact had other guests comment that they slept very comfortably in this room, some of whom are repeat guests who choose Room 9 specifically. With regard to the room size, the reservation was made through our online reservation system where we do indicate that it is a smaller room. It is also one of our two lowest priced rooms taking into account the size. The room does however offer all of the same amenities as other rooms in the Inn.

We were thrilled with this mansion, and the town of Annapolis Royal. Our hostess put us on to a nice restaurant, a musical special at the theater, and a fantastic graveyard tour. I liked the way breakfast was done - a choice of time, and a printed menu to choose from.
3.4 on September 06, 2011
We loved this experience. The Inn was wonderfully cared for. The breakfast was exceptional. The furnishings throughout were thoughtful. Perfectly located within walking distance of all there is to see and do in the town. The challenge here is where to eat dinner? The Inn has a cross-promotion with Garrison House..but their food was seriously unsatisfactory and the service was beyond bizarre.
It is disappointing and surprising to learn that these guests did not enjoy their experience at the Garrison House which affected their rating of our property. Previous reviews on this restaurant from other guests have been quite positive.

I stayed at the Inn for an over night "stop over" due to my time restrictions. I wish I had taken the time to relax and enjoy all that this excellent Inn and the Annapolis Royal area had to offer. I plan to be back.
It should be noted that we only provide breakfast service in our Dining Room and we do not operate a restaurant for other meal service. There are however several very good restaurants within walking distance of the Inn.
3.8 on June 15, 2011
We picked this place from the NS tourist guide and (because it was late in the day) we got the last room (in the attic and hence the 'met my expectations' for the room). But what a great choice of B&B this was! Attentive hosts in a lovely house in a lovely town. We strongly recommend it.

I was one of a Theater group(G&S) performing in Annapolis Royal. Unfortunately, we didn't have much time at the Inn but next yr will book for a longer stay. Was a fabulous Inn and the breakfast was heavenly! Slept like a baby in that wonderful queen size bed. And the staff were welcoming and accomadating. Made u feel like u were coming home but in much grander surroundings. Have recommended it to others in our theater group for next yr and some friends who are travelling that way. Enjoyed thouroughly.

Hillsdale House Inn is a charming place, bringing you back in time to the 1800's. The service was friendly, the breakfast was excellent in the most beautiful dining room. The property was huge, with nice outdoor seating if you wanted to. It was located on the main street, so easy walking to many places. The bathroom was huge and the room a good size. My only negative comment is the bed was too hard. I wouldn't think anything of it except someone else said the same thing in the morning. I would go back there if I had the chance.

Beautiful home, wonderful hosts, good food, comfortable rooms! The midnight graveyard storytelling tour down the street from here was awesome! My husband and I stayed at the Hillsdale House Inn for one night in September, 2010. Paul and Val were extremely welcoming and attentive to our needs. Without us even needing to ask, Paul informed us of the town's best restaurants and informed us of events and attractions that we might be interested in. As the Inn was not busy on the night we stayed there, Paul even upgraded us to a larger room (again, without us asking). The Hillsdale House is a beautiful inn, and the owners' attention to detail and customer service is excellent. Highly recommended.

Very comfortable B&B, delicious breakfast and helpful staff. Beautiful grounds and within walking distance of the gardens and sites of Annapolis Royal.

We scheduled a one night stay to fit our vacation itinerary, with minimal expectations. The Inn proved to be lovely. The hosts/staff were so gracious. Their recommendations of where to visit and eat were perfect. Breakfast was sumptuous, with excellent coffee! We shared a large table with 2 other couples, which made it very enjoyable. We had the smallest/cheapest room, which proved to be very adequate. We would have enjoyed another night here!
