"Bar Harbor's Best..."

"My wife and I rode into Bar Harbor from Pittsburgh, Pa., on motorcycles -- in the rain. Ironically, in fact, we seemed to follow a double-rainbow for the last hour of the ride...right to the front door of the Hearthside Bed and Breakfast. Tired and a bit wet, we found ourselves absolutely delighted when Innkeeper Barry Schwartz greeted us so pleasantly and with such "Better Homes & Gardens"-like accommodations. Cozy and quaintly appointed, our gabled third-floor room (the Duke of Wellington room) offered period charm, calmness and a great night's sleep after a long and sometimes difficult day of riding. The bed and pillows were first-rate, and the small but full bathroom served us well. As for the breakfasts, we thoroughly enjoyed our meals on all four mornings of our stay. Barry and his wife, Susan, always provided seating at the large diningroom table, as well as at several bistro tables on the side porch (which we really enjoyed, weather permitting). We could always count on oatmeal, other cereals, toast/English muffins, homemade breads or muffins, some kind of fruit dish, and flavorful, locally roasted coffee. Then there were the entrees. Made to order, Barry and Susan prepared plates of French toast one day, omelets with choice of fixings, quiche and some kind of delicious blueberry-filled crepes. All very good -- and enough to keep my wife and I going until at least mid-afternoon. The innkeepers themselves were friendly, attentive, warm and caring, and they seemed to pay close attention to the kinds of details that make them a stand-out among inns, from towels to dry off our bikes, complimentary bottles of water and locally sold olive oils, to lots of tourist information, maps and personal recommendations for sight-seeing. Indeed, we enjoyed the stay and left with fond memories, as Susan and Barry are the best of the best when it comes to running a bed and breakfast inn. "
