Inn Details

Located on a quiet tree lined street one block from busy Front Street, The Verandas guests have the best of being conveniently located downtown, but in a quiet residential neighborhood. Guests can relax on one of four verandas, or on the terrace overlooking the small, but colorful garden.

Sophisticated public space is elegant, and grand, but never off-putting. Rooms are professionally decorated with wonderful colors, original artwork, and a comfortable blend of english and american furniture, all for the use and pleasure of our guests.

Every attempt is made to "spoil" our guests, including providing a full gourmet breakfast in the morning. We feel that a bed and breakfast experience should include a special breakfast that one doesn't get everyday. French pressed coffee, gourmet tea, fruit course, entree, and breakfast meat are served on antique china, and silver underneath a beautiful chandelier in the dining room, or outside on the terrace. All rooms are large, quiet, corner rooms, and beautifully decorated. Top-of-the-line Serta King, or queen size beds are covered in hand ironed linens. Each room has it own TV, bathrobes, phone, CD alarm clock, wireless internet. Bathrooms have hair dryers, irons, ironing boards, and custom amenties. Each room has a garden size soaking tub, as well as shower. Marble floors, large marble vanities, and large mirrors complete the picture. The Verandas has been a AAA Four Diamond property for six years as well as a member of the exclusive Select Registry for 7 years. The Verandas is featured on HGTV's Fine Living Channel, and is featured on UNC's Carolina Now. The goal of The Verandas is to provide affordable luxury. The mansion is 154 years old, but was totally gutted to the studding, and has truly been renovated to provide the ultimate comfort and safety features for our guests. While the Inn is decorated in beautiful fabrics, artwork, and furniture, we are not a museum, but an Inn for guests to enjoy.

    Review The Verandas, Wilmington, NC

    Photo Album

Welcome to The Verandas front hall. The doors are faux painted and the marble floor were part of the renovations. The house burned in 1992 and the owner purchased it as a burned shell, gutted it to its framework, and spent two years transforming it to a luxury bed and breakfast. We won an award for our interior restoration. Guests have complete access to the first floor public space. They never have to compete with a wedding or function. The piano room is a fun room. There is a piano for guests to play, there is music, there are books, there are magazines. On the mantle are five poems that guests have written for us, and a collection of books are in the room that have been written by our guests and given to us. To the right of this room is the Butler's Pantry which is stocked with goodies for guests.
This is the guest living room and dining room. There are a pair of chrystal chandeliers and matching wall sconces. The furniture is a combination of antiques and reproductions. Large windows bathe the two rooms with natural sunlight. Between the two chairs you will see a music box from 1890. Ask the owners to play it for you! It has wonderful sound. Although these rooms might look small, each is roughly 400 square feet. Breakfast is served in the dining room at one seating at 9.a.m. on the weekends, and for corporate guests between 7:30 and 8:30. A full gourmet breakfast is served with a choice of juice. Our coffee is French pressed and we have a large variety of tea. A main entree is served with the breakfast meat kept separate. Breakfast is served on antique china and silver. Early coffee is available at 7:30.
This is the view from one side of the back terrace. This is the back terrace. In cooler weather, everyone lives out here. It is peaceful and quiet. The is a fountain that you can hear in the background. Great place to enjoy sodas, beer, or wine in the afternoon. We are a non-smoking Inn, but guests are welcome to smoke on the terrace, or on the verandas where there are ashtrays.
The horse and buggy meanders by the Inn every hour. It is great fun! You can catch a ride at 10 Market Street. Tell the driver that The Verandas sent you. Enjoy the peaceful ride through the beautiful historic district. There are about 240 blocks of historic district making it one of the largest in the country. This is room #1 in shades of green and peach. Queen size bed.
Room #4 is our largest room and is where celebrities usually stay. Many honeymoon nights have been spend here, as well as anniversaries. When you walk out the door to this room, make a left, walk 8 steps, open the door, and you are on the second floor veranda. This is room #5, our least expensive room, but very popular. This room features a queen size bed and is on the top floor. Looking out the windows, you are about 50 feet above the street.
Room #8 features a king size bed and is on the southwest side of the Inn. Being on the top floor, the sunset is eye level out the window behind the blue chair. The wall are blue with a hand applied gray glaze. Roughly four hundred square feet on the top floor.Although this room does not photograph well, room #7 is a blend of Orient Express meets "Out of Africa." It is a very masculine room that women seem to love. The walls are faux painted, and the artwork and accesories are from the Amazon River and other international locations. In the bathroom you can actually see out a window while sitting in the bathtub.
Room 3 has a queen four poster bed and is quite dramatic with gray walls, and black, gold, and silver tones. It has a decorative fireplace. If you open the door to this room and make 8 steps, you can open the front door and step out on the second floor front veranda. This is Dennis Madsen, owner/innkeeper on the left, and Chuck Pennington, the other owner/innkeeper on the right. We are on the second floor rear veranda.
