Evening at the beautiful Aerie Bed and Breakfast...please join us.
Each morning, guests awake to a gourmet breakfast in an elegant, dining room where the Innkeepers offer a daily choice of three hot entrees made with seasonal local ingredients.
The Aerie main parlor with the Italian ceramic chandelier is the crowning centerpiece of this grand room.
The Aerie Parlor is appointed with fine antiques and historic reproductions including an antique red velvet Empire sofa, Empire petticoat marble-topped table and a Federal three-paneled mirror.
The courtyard at the rear of the main house with its tables and café umbrellas, is in full bloom for the greater part of the year and may be used as a gathering place to meet friends or even for wedding ceremonies.
Our outdoor spaces provide a perfect spot to cozy up with a book or to enjoy the evening air.
An ornate, four-post, canopy queen bed, antique Victorian settee, comfortable sitting area with two wingback chairs and mirrored artwork by the owner Marty, make The Magnolia Suite uniquely special. Perhaps the most romantic and impressive of all our bedchambers!
The Magnolia Suite with its massive Magnolia tree outside the window pays tribute to the beautiful white blossoms that embody North Carolina's southern traditions of grace and sophistication.
Stylish artwork depicting the French Quarter lends sophisticated charm to this quaint room with a pencil-post queen bed.
The Basin Street Room harkens back to when Samuel Street built the home c.1882, and this cozy room was the upstairs bath, kept comfortable by the fireplace, decoratively in place today. The name refers to the room's original purpose (Basin) and owner (Street) and also to New Orleans' famed promenade where your innkeepers enjoyed their honeymoon.
The Carolina Suite shares its name historically with the colony named after its sovereign King Charles II (his Latin name "Carolus") but also after the Street-Ward home’s matriarch Carolina Ward. Originally the home's dining room, this spacious, ground floor suite features a king bed and sitting area with two wingback chairs in an alcove of bay windows overlooking the Attmore-Oliver House Museum. Room highlights include an ornate fireplace mantle, antique 19th century amoire and a comfortable wingback chair at the fireplace
The Carolina bathroom features a marble sink and top and a large jetted bath with shower in a subway tiled enclosure. Orginial wooden floor makes a real statement. Believe it or not, this was the home's summer kitchen in 1882!!
The Williamsburg blue and ivory toile drapery reflect New Bern's colonial heritage while the romantically swagged four-post canopy bed and period furniture allow guests the opportunity to be part of a tranquil bed and breakfast experience with a little extra intimacy.
The Tuscarora Suite is named in recognition the ancestral Native-American people who inhabited the peninsula, which later became New Bern. One of the home's three original upstairs bedrooms, this guest suite features an Austrian, antique, king-sized bed, wide-planked wooden floors and elegant Oriental rug. A spacious sitting area centered around the room's Sheridan settee, matching late-Victorian chairs, Empire marble-topped coffee table and decorative fireplace heightens the ambiance of the Tuscarora Suite.
A wonderfully deep two-person sized whirlpool bath with shower make for a perfectly elegant and romantic suite.
Tasteful appointments and refined decorative treatments make this quaint, warm-hued room one of our most popular. A The Duck Inn is a smaller room, but delightful in every way.
The Duck Inn Room, was the room of Mary Ward whose family purchased the residence from Samuel Street in 1900.
The Duck Inn Room is on the first floor and is understated elegance. In fact, the current doorway into The Duck Inn room was once a closet and now guests over six foot may need to 'duck' their heads to enter a room with an eleven foot ceiling! One of our smaller rooms it features a bath with a period soaking tub and shower combination.
The Kennebec Room with three bay windows and great king bed with a tuffed canopy and wonderful draperies create an elegant feel that you'll be certain to enjoy.
Private bath with a jetted whirlpool bathtub and shower is a grand feature of The Kennebec Room.
The Parlor in The Aerie Guest House is a beautiful setting to enjoy the comforts of our new property. It also serves as a great break-out area for meetings, retreats or other functions held in the adjoining conference room.
The bath in The King George III Suite includes this large whirlpool as well as a large walk-in shower with spa multi-jetted sprays and an overhead rainforest showerhead. The very old stained glass window is simply breathtaking when sunlight reflects through the beveled glass.
Regal is the best way to describe The King George III Suite. Located on the second floor of The Aerie Guest House just across the street from the main property the suite is one of only two in the guest house thereby affording a bit more seclusion, but still not missing the social activities in the main house.
The Caleb Bradham Suite in located in The Aerie Guest House just across the street from the main building and is named for the New Bern inventor of Pepsi-Cola from 1898. The suite features a king bed and the sitting room can convert into two additional sleeping units. Private bath, of course, with a whirlpool and shower.
The Aerie Conference Center located in the Guest House is a great meeting space for small corporate retreats, receptions or perhaps a luncheon followed by bridge. Seating 15 comfortably in a horseshoe configuration or up to 28 in classroom style the room is complete with an in-house computer & printer, audio-visual equipment, whiteboard and free WIFI. Seven tables of 4 make an ideal luncheon area followed by friendly card playing or other activities.

5 out of 5Aerie stay for four days
May 05, 2013
Marty and Michael are wonderfully gracious and charming people to meet. They are knowledgable about the historic town of NewBern and local dining, tours and shopping which is only a block from their door. Loved their beautiful room decorated in period style. The breakfast was gourmet omelets, cobblers, and flavored french toast and pancakes served in a lovely dining area. I felt so welcome and comfortable there. Can't wait to go back! Toni in Michigan
5 out of 5We're Still Talking About Our Stay at the Aerie
May 02, 2013
We were meandering around North Carolina and met some folks in Wilmington who had stayed at the Aerie in New Bern a few nights previous. They loved it so we thought we'd give it a try. We are still talking about how much fun we had with Marty and Michael Gunhus as our hosts. Homey, clean and friendly and a delightful shower in the Hidden Room. Breakfast was served on their flower-lined brick patio--purple flowers everywhere. It started with a warm blueberry compote and then onto a choice of three entrees. Endless coffee. Cold juices. It was just delightful. My husband said he had the best night's sleep in a long time. We arrived as strangers and left as friends. We loved it! Janice & Tom, Charlotte, Vermont

The Aerie was beyond our expectations. Comfortable, Clean, Cozy "Basin Street" room., and a Delicious Breakfast to wake up to each day. The Welcome feeling started upon arrival, Michael and Marty are gracious hosts. Banjo kept us smiling every time he made an appearance. We left with nice memories, we celebrated our 45th with newly weds and NOT so newly weds. Lots of hugs, a promise to return! Planning next trip now, we decided that The Aerie is the best B&B !! There are so many superlatives to be said about the Aerie that it's hard to choose where to start. The hosts, Marty and Michael, are people at once warm and respectful of your privacy, full of helpful information and gracious in the manners of the Old South but real and genuine. If you lived in New Bern, you would seek them out as friends. The rooms are grand and thoughtfully appointed, comfortable and dreamy for you romantics, in a Somewhere In Time way. The daily wine and cheese "social" lets you meet some of the interesting people staying in the historic home with you. We were especially fond of a couple who also shared one of Marty's famous breakfasts with us; they were inspiring and inspired, as was the gourmet food! Every detail was done to perfection, presented with storybook elegance, and certain to make your visit a long-cherished memory. Be sure to give yourself a couple of days, at least, to absorb it all, and if at all possible, take along someone you love, or hope to fall in love with, because this is just the setting where such moments are likely.
