1902 Turnpike House

The room was wonderful. Imagine having coffee delivered to your bedroom door in the morning! Paul did a fantastic job with breakfasts... especially his stuffed french toast.. I felt as if I had known Cindy for years. The endless cookie jar was a pleasant treat, as was the hot spiced apple cider. I will recommend this to my friends as a warm, friendly, b&b.

We went looking for a quiet place to relax and have a restful getaway. This was the perfect place! Cindy and Paul were friendly and extremely helpful. Everything we needed and more was provided (from extra toiletries to a guest pantry with drinks and snacks to the endless cookie jar!). There were plenty of places to sit and chat or read and the rooms were very clean with every amenity you would expect/need - cable, wi-fi. The owners even upgraded our room for us with no charge because they were not fully booked and thought we would be more comfortable in a different room! Breakfast was amazing - Paul's cooking is top notch. We would recommend this place to everyone! We'll definitely be going back.

I'm been coming here for years. Paul and Cindy are the greatest! A real home away from home. Wonderful breakfasts. Hot tub is excellent. You can't go wrong!

We have stayed at the 1902 Turnpike House the last two years for our post Christmas vacation and have nothing but wonderful memories. Cindy & Paul go up and above to provide A+ sevice to their guests. You leave feeling like you just stayed at a relatives house and are part of the family. The house is beautifully restored and easily accomodates both couples wanting to enjoy a nice, peaceful, romantic getaway to families with children enjoying a family vacation. Each morning Cindy & Paul prepare the most superb and delicious breakfasts. We always enjoyed getting the opportunity to chat with other guests from around the world while enjoying the homecooked breakfast. At night, you can enjoy a good book with a cup of Cindy's apple cidar or a cup of hot chocolate or tea by the fire to relax after a day full of skiing. We will never stay anywhere else when we are in the area and look forward to our next visit.

We have stayed in B&B’s from sea to shining sea some with chefs trained in Paris and some with many modern amenities. When we are drawn to restful contentment our gaze shifts unto the hills and the 1902 Turnpike House. There we find Paul and Cindy and what has become a home away from home. Their grace and hospitality warm our hearts, and the cuisine is second to none. What they have created with sincerity in this old house is an atmosphere that embodies all that a B&B should be.

We were just looking for a place to run away to over the 2011 Labor Day weekend. Had no idea about accommodations in the Banner Elk area, but fortunately wound up at the 1902 Turnpike House. The house and our room were very charming; Cindy and Paul were excellent hosts; the food Paul prepared for our breakfast was delicious and we admit to taking advantage of the endless supply of his homemade cookies! Our intent was to relax, and between sightseeing and dinner we enjoyed a glass of wine while sitting in rocking chairs on their beautiful back porch watching the variety of birds at the feeders. We'll do it again!

Inkeepers Paul and Cindy are so friendly and accommodating. Room was excellent French toast with homemade syrup at breakfast was unbelievable. Highly recommend.

Visited in January of 2011 and had a wonderful time. A charming old house and the innkeepers were very gracious. The breakfasts were amazing. Located close to town and ski resorts.

I spent 4 days last summer at the Turnpike House, enjoying the gracious hospitality, delicious food and wonderful ambiance. I have already made reservations to return next summer. The best!

Convenient to downtown Banner Elk. Very knowledgeable owners directed us to the best restaurants and things to see and do. We enjoyed the relaxed ambiance of the den wih a glass of wine by the fireplace. Amenities included like a luxury hotel. We'll definitely be back.

We were attending the Highland Games on Grandfather Mountain and really enjoyed staying at the 1902 Turnpike House. The breakfasts were great and the hospitality outstanding.

The 1902 Turnpike House is a charming B&B. Whenever we come to Banner Elk, it is the only place we want to stay. Cindy and Paul are charming, gracious, and accommodating hosts. The breakfasts are purely gourmet, and the cookies in the dining room are the ideal snack between meals.

We visit 1902 Turnpike House annually, and each year we are welcomed back warmly, treated like honored guests, and we have found only the best quality each time. Our room is always clean, comfortable and well appointed, the breakfast is always very elegant and our hosts always have time to visit and make us feel at home.

Cindy and Paul were great. They house is elegant but comfortable. We enjoyed spending time in the living room, the porch, the upstairs sitting area as well as our bedroom. I liked the reading materials, many books and magazines. The breakfasts are very elegant and fun. On our last day, we had to leave very early so they made a great breakfast we could take with us in the car and eat after we had been on the road a few hours. We plan on returning!

On arrival very welcoming and during our stay very helpful, friendly and sociable. Made one feel really at home.

This is a wonderful place to stay at in Banner Elk. The house use to belong to the Lowe and Banner family who helped establish the Banner Elk region in the 1800's. Both Paul and Cindy are from Texas and bring with them a complete southern hospitality. Paul is an excellent chef and a very kind man. Cindy can make anyone feel completely at ease and is very knowledgeable about the area. My family and I have stayed here many times and will continue to go here whenever we visit the area. Thank you Paul & Cindy for making the Banner family very happy in an area where our ancestors once lived.

We've stayed at the 1902 Turnpike House B&B three times now, and we look forward to staying many more times in the future. In fact, I can't imagine our trips to NC mountains without a stay at Cindy and Paul's great B&B. Nicer folks you'll never meet, better food you'll never eat, and the house is as peaceful and relaxing as you can imagine. We've been there during Christmases and during summers and enjoyed both seasons. This past July we sat on their back porch and within two hours we identified 13 different species of birds visiting their garden/birdfeeding area. There are always fresh cookies, cider, drinks, etc., so it really feels like a home away from home. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

We were greeted by our hostess as soon as we pulled into the parking lot. This welcome reminded me of someone anxiously awaiting the arrival of friends or family and being so excited once they arrivied. The Inn was charming, the food was delicious, the table elequently set, out hostess nicely dressed as she greeted us each morning at breakfast, and very knowledgable about the area and things to do. Paul is an excellent chef! One of my best B&B experiences. Please try it, you won't be disappointed. Happy travels.

Took my senior adult group for a weekend trip. It felt like home from the moment we arrived. The innkeepers, Paul and Cindy, were wonderful! The food was absolutely delicious and there was always hot coffee and homemade baked goods to snack on. We enjoyed sitting on the front porch watching the birds or sitting in the parlor drinking coffee and talking. This B&B is located in a very quiet area where you can truly just relax.

It doesn't get any better than being at the bottom of 3 mountains. So many options each day! WONDERFUL BREAKFAST!!!!!!

This is an outstanding bed and breakfast! Cindy and Paul are lovely hosts and go out of their way to welcome you to their home. The rooms are clean and beautifully furnished. We have spent several vacations there and plan to return. One of the things we liked best was Chef Paul’s outstanding breakfasts. You will leave feeling very well fed! There are always fresh baked cookies on the sideboard to welcome you and the fridge is well stocked with sodas and other treats for guests. Another “best” is the large porch that overlooks a well-kept garden attracting many birds with its feeders. The porch provides a scenic view and pleasant gathering place where we often met other guests before breakfast. The only negatives would be the little inconveniences typical of a well kept 100 year old home. This is our home when we visit the mountains of North Carolina.

My husband and I loved our stay at the inn. Paul and Cindy, the hosts, are such nice and helpful people. The food was fabulous. The inn offers many places to relax both indoors and outdoors. The area is beautiful and offers many outdoor activities year-round. The inn is a perfect place to return to after a day of hiking or visiting area attractions. The hosts are very helpful with info and suggestions.

Spent our annniversary here last year and the couldnt have found a better location. My boyfriend but together the trip and I was less an uneasy staying at a bed a breakfast but it was one of the best traveling experiences I've had. We meet great people also staying in the bed and breakfast and we still keep it touch to this day!! Would go back in a HEARTBEAT!!! And you havent lived until you've had Paul's breakfast! He's amazing! We are trying to convince him to write a cook book!

This is a very good place to stay. We stayed 2 times already and plan to go back soon. It is very cozy & Clean. The Innkeepers, Cindy & Paul were very nice. They make sure you have everything you need.The grounds were beautiful and the breakfast was out of this world delicious. The cookies are homeade and very good, and always available. It is an amazing experience you won't forget.

We stayed at 1902 Turnpike House for several days in January 2010 and had a wonderful time. The hospitality and company were great as was the food. We found the community interesting and lots to do. We will definetly be back.

The 1902 Turnpike House is warm and inviting, cozy and quaint, relaxing an rural. Whether you are a couple on a getaway or a small group in conference, this B&B nestled in the valleys of Banner Elk, North Carolina is one of the best kept secrets around!. While everyone else is crowding into ski lodges and hotels filled with other tourists and college kids, the 1902 Turnpike House is an oasis of quiet that is still close to all the great sites, shops, and scenes that you will find in the area. Cindy and Paul are great hosts and you will find it very easy to befriend them! Paul, your Orange-Stuffed French Toast with Orange Sauce was simply amazing! Over a week later I still salivate when I think about it. The history of the house itself is fascinating and Cindy tells it very well. If you are looking for the peaceful comfort that you thought you could only find at Grandma's house, guess what? You'll find it in Banner Elk at the 1902 Turnpike House!

This was the most exciting weekend me and my girlfriend have ever had!! Staying with Cindy and Paul was better than being at home!! The rooms were were impeccable and the food was delicious!! I plan on returning the same time this year and hopefully with the two couples we met last year. Stay here and you are bound to make memories!!

We happened onto this B&B almost by accident but they "had us at hello." Cozy, cozy, cozy beyond description. Cindy and Paul know exactly how to make you welcome yet give you the space to de-stress and rest. Oh, and breakfast!! Paul has years of experience in the dining industry and it shows! The food is some of the best breakfasts we had ever had and the presentation is just elegant. We so look forward to our next trip to the mountains and a stay at the 1902. The Matthews, Wake Forest, NC
