As seen on TLC's "Four Houses," artists Victoria and Richard MacKenzie-Childs invite guests to enjoy a ferry-tale New York area adventure as part of the Yankee "Stay Aboard" offering. Built in 1907, Yankee began as a steam powered ferry transporting passengers from Maine to the Calendar Islands. During World War I, she was painted Navy gray and served as the USS Machigonne transporting soldiers and supplies. At the end of the war, she brought newly arrived immigrants to Ellis Island, and gave many their first view of New York City. During World War II, Yankee re-entered military service and kept an eye out for German U-boats. In 1947, she went from an SS (steamship) to a diesel engine powered vessel, and officially became Yankee. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, she is the last floating Ellis Island ferry. Permanently docked on the Hudson River, Yankee is 10 minutes from midtown Manhattan by ferry, 15-20 minutes by bus or PATH train and a world away from your ordinary New York accommodations. Please note: There is a 2-night minimum stay for all reservations.

    Crew Quarters

Yo-Ho! . . . this, along with a since walled-off adjacent chamber, was the original crew quarters of the ship. 16 crew slept hanging from pullman cots & draped in hammocks, with lockers lining the bulkhead. But for the long since silenced snores, there is a wonderful sense, below decks, of the real hunkered down-ladderway feeling.

    Guest Stateroom

The "ferry" tale suite . . . . . . where sunspots move upon the tidal Hudson Bay waters, filter through a patch worked colored vinyl curtain, and weave in & out of string linen drapes, making a sort of visible music. Then glinting off the wall of mirrors, dancing between tassels from the crocheted canopy, and dazzling the morning with a wink in ones eye that blinks & squints at life . . . as if for the first time, . . . all the long day!
