Originally built as a stone farmhouse at the turn of the 19th century, the Tamaracks Country Villa was later absorbed in 1909 into a European-style stucco “castle”, locally known as The Colby Mansion in Sussex County’s Skylands district. Secluded on 5 1/2 acres surrounded by gardens and woodlands, creek and lake, the inn was the dream home of a self-styled architect/entrepreneur and his internationally known artist-wife. While preserving much of the original interior spaces, the seven suites with private ensuite baths, gas fireplaces, and sitting/work areas, are all handcrafted rooms tastefully and artistically appointed. Some have soaking tubs, two person showers, and private balconies. Common areas abound on both floors of the inn providing spaces for guests to relax or visit with others and also for small social gatherings (weddings, club meetings, showers) or business meetings. The first floor is completely accessible and the entire building has a sprinkler system for our guests’ safety. A complimentary full breakfast is offered each morning in the dining room. With its open hearth, bake oven, and 12″ beams cut from the property, the dining room reflects the early Dutch settlers’ heritage. Come for a visit. We would love to share our inn with you.
Formerly Franklin Colby’s library, this spacious first floor suite features a round corner working fireplace adapted from the Davanzatti Palace in Florence and 12″ timber beams cut from the property. A Queen size bed, private bath with soaking tub, and two person shower pamper you with relaxing comfort in an unusual accommodation with historic flavor and modern comforts.
With sunset views over the lilac hedge, this Queen size sleigh bed corner suite is also nestled in the maple trees. From the soaking tub in the bathroom, with separate shower, you can admire the decorative fireplace in the sitting/work area.
Our largest suite was the painting studio of Josephine Wood Colby and visiting artists. With soaring tray ceiling, large working fireplace, window seats and spacious sitting/work area and deck, this quirky room features a King size bed, copper slipper tub in the room, and a separate shower room.
With a private entrance steps from the woodland trails to the lake, this suite is a very special first floor room: white ADA compliant it has a private deck in the garden, Queen size four poster bed, sitting area with corner fireplace, and a shower in the largest bathroom in the inn.
Overlooking the rose trellises is this “sweet” suite showcasing a wall of the original stone house as a backdrop to the daybed set across from the matching Queen size bed and fireplace. With a private deck and two person shower, it is a serene getaway.
Woodland Path Room
Apple and pear trees dot the property surrounding the inn. This corner suite gets early morning sunrises which might tempt you to rise from the king size bed. There is also a decorative fireplace in the sitting/work area, and separate soaking tub and shower.

The Tamaracks Country Villa is a magical place to get away and relax, reconnect or just refuel... My husband and I stole away to this unique bed and breakfast during the snowstorm. The rooms are lovely; the soaking tubs are amazing; the breakfast is excellent in both presentation and content; and we cannot say enough about the kindness and hospitality of the innkeepers, Cate and Tom. Their story about the restoration of the Villa from near ruin is inspiring. They had a dream, and now, their dream has become part of our dream. Bravo!

I almost don't want to tell you how lovely this place is, because I really would like it to remain my secret getaway place! Everything about our stay at Tamaracks Country Villa was phenomenal, from the accommodations (what an amazing building!) to the fantastic hospitality. Tom & Cate went out of their way to make us comfortable, and the breakfast was delicious. I would never have thought to make northwestern NJ a vacation destination (we were just attending a wedding in the area), but I'm already looking for excuses to go back and visit again (family reunion, company party, girls' weekend away). It's a perfect spot for a quiet getaway, or would make a beautiful place for a small wedding. I wish I could give them more stars. This is one secret that just shouldn't be kept to myself!

We had our wedding reception at Tamaracks and it was amazing. We had 74 guests and everyone had a fantastic time. The wedding pictues all came out beautiful because it is such a beautiful place. Our family and bridal party stayed the night and everyone was in love with their bedrooms. Breakfast in the morning was delicious and Cate and Tom even accommodated a couple of extra people. It was a wonderful evening and we are planning on going back.
