Westwood Guest Cottage

  • Inn Details

We are 15 minutes from Oneonta and just a short scenic drive from Oneonta to Cooperstown. The cottage sits in a clearing on 11 acres of woods, perfect for bird watching with hiking and walking trails. The only sound you will hear at night is the sound of crickets, and the cottage is a great get-away. You can just relax and swim in our 20'x 40' heated pool, enjoy a picnic with an outdoor gas grill by the cottage, or have access to many fine, inexpensive, off the beaten path restaurants in the area. What we offer is a vacation experience you will want to repeat. We are a romantic getaway, pet friendly as well as a non-smoking establishment. The cottage sleeps 1-6 with a comfortable living room with a TV/VCR with tapes, and a phone to make reservations wherever you might want to go. We have a fully equipped kitchen and a full bathroom with tub and shower and the living room has two comfortable hotel quality singles.Quilts, linens and towels are provided. A canoe is available for trips along the nearby Susquehanna and Unadilla rivers and for fishing on Lake Otsego in Cooperstown. We are in Historic NY State, amidst many battle sites of American Revolution.

I rented this place for a small birthday party because of the pool. They said they would do a one night rental, no problem. I paid $235 up front. The cottage smells like an antique store and if you have allergies BE CAREFUL! A week after we checked out, I found a $100 charge on my account with no explanation, subsequent phone calls to owners resulted in an explanation that the umbrella was broke, the railing was broke and the netting from the volleyball game was left up. None was true and I got no opportunity to go see prior to the charge and now that a week has gone by I can not prove one way or the other. NOT good business practice!

    Innkeeper Response
This was truly an unfortunate incident at our rental cottage. We really wanted do something special for our guests by letting them host a 16th birthday party on our grounds - in addition to their one-night stay at no additional charge. Unfortunately, we are a very small, family-run business. So when there is damage to our property we have no option but to pass on the cost to the responsible party. In the future we hope to be more communicative with our guests about what the expectations are and what the risks are when bringing more than 20 people onto our grounds at once. We would also like to continue to accommodate special needs/desires of our guests (such as parties) in the future! Please do not hesitate to contact us directly if you would like to speak about this particular review or if you have questions about a visit of your own. Thank you.

We arrived at 5:15 pm and no one was there to meet us - no key was left - just a note on the door indicating a phone number to call - we called several times and and left messages and a number to call us back and never received a response - even to this day we have yet to hear from the owners. We walked around the grounds - and found a lot of bugs and wildlife - we never got inside. The grill on the outside was old and looked like it had not been used in months - covered in dirt and dust and spiderwebs - seemed like they were not expecting us. Also, we noticed a cat inside the cottage house - not good as my wife is allergic to cat hair (we were not told of this in advance) seemed to us like someone was living there. We then walked over to the main house and no one was home - the pool seemed nice but they made it seem like the pool was right outside the barn - it wasn't - it was 200 yards away and down a steep hill in the backyard of the main house - we knocked at the main house and left a handwritten note there as well - and still have received no response from them - We even went into town (Oneonta) and came back hours later and they still were not there - they left us scambling for a place to stay for the week - and to this day they have still not contacted us to explain or apologize - I'm disputing the charges with the credit card company as they did not perform at all.

    Innkeeper Response
We are so sorry to see this review as we believe it does not belong to our property! We have no record of this booking, we did not receive the notes that are described above and we have had no disputed charges according to our credit card processing company. We continue to encourage open communication with all of our guests. If you are considering a stay with us and would like to speak more in depth about our cottage, PLEASE CONTACT US! We are a family business and would love to speak with you personally about your future getaway. You can reach the owners or the booking manager by phone - 607-369-7306 or 212-579-9685. We also welcome emails, please see our listing for email address.

Innkeepers Lisa and Doren have made Westwood Guest Cottage a warm, cozy, inviting place to stay. What lovely accommodations! We stayed in a room with a queen size bed furnished with an antique secretary and Audubon pictures which were very beautiful. One can sit outside on the comfortable chairs or country swing and be mesmerized by the spacious and beautiful grounds, overflowing with flowers. Lisa and Doren are very eager to please and excellent guides on the surrounding area. This was a huge help when deciding on how to spend the day. You can explore Cooperstown or Oneonta (a short drive), trek through Antique Alley, kick back and read a good book, swim in the luxurious pool, golf or even go horseback riding! There are several restaurants in the area and you can be sure Lisa’s recommendations will send you to the very best! Breakfast is self cook, as you can actually cook in your own kitchen and pick your own time breakfast time. All in all, I have to say I have never been a B&B person, but Westwood Guest Cottage is a true exception. When you’re at Westwood – you’re at home without the hassles!

We came for a romantic getaway, and liked the converted barn so much we came again with our friends in the summer and loved the pool, canoing on the Susquehanna and Lake Otsego in Coopers town. Lisa and Doren had great suggestions for restaurants from the fine dining at The Blue Mingo and the cheap but fantastic meal at Brooks BBQ in Oneonta. We came yet another time in the Fall with our children, who had a fabulous time hiking in the trails, playing ball in the meadow, and sighting turkey and deer in the meadow, and woodpeckers in the forest. We love the Grill and our dog loves running around the swing and picnic table. Check out the Fenimore Art Museum's collection of American folk art and James Fenimore Cooper memorabilia (888-547-1450; fenimoreartmuseum.org ) or, across the street, the Farmers' Museum, with its 1840s village and working farm (888-547-1450; farmersmuseum.org ). Also, the Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta. Great antique shops from Unadilla to Cooperstown. We will be back again this fall and Spring.

Being native New Yorkers and living in the city, my family and I were desperate for a getaway! Westwood Guest Cottage provided the perfect accommodations. Our kids and dog had plenty of room to run around and spending time at the pool was relaxing for everyone. The peace and privacy we found beats out staying in a condo any day! Thanks Westwood Guest Cottage!
