4.8 out of 5The Best-Kept Secret in New York City
August 03, 2011
I almost don't want to write a review of the Victorian Villa, because I want to keep this best kept secret for myself! However, Neil and Linda were so nice and accommodating... If you're going to be staying in New York for an extended amount of time, Staten Island is the place to stay. At the Victorian Villa, you are just a hop, skip, and a ferry ride away from Manhattan. It's only a 10 min. walk, and in about 26 mins., you're in Manhattan -after a FREE tour of New York Harbor! Finding a place to stay in Staten Island is hard, because there aren't any hotels in the ferry area - only the Victorian Villa. Located across from an elementary school, the neighborhood feels safe, with ample free parking in summertime. But the best part is the backyard. The first night I arrived, I was surprised and delighted by the welcoming courtyard that opens up after a winding path against the side of the formidable-looking house. To stay in the loft, you climb up a flight of steps to a small but comfortable balcony porch. The lovely little loft bedroom sits atop the house like a refuge from the world, and the porch provides plenty of room to catch a stray breeze and enjoy a nice breakfast, which I made myself in the functional little kitchen. I was there with my son during the last week of July, in the middle of a heat wave, but the loft bedroom was always cool and comfortable. The size was also perfect for the two of us. Whenever I needed anything or had any questions, Linda and Neil were just a phone call away. The place had everything we needed to enjoy an affordable vacation exploring the city and the surrounding beaches – including Staten Island’s own beautiful boardwalk and the historic battery buildings that used to protect the bay and city; located just below the magnificent Verranzano Narrows Bridge! I highly recommend Victorian Villa, but I hope they keep the loft bedroom available for me….

My daughter attended Wagner College, also located on Staten Island. I wish I would have known about this property her freshman year. We stayed here to attend her graduation. It was very convenient to the school and the ferry into Manhanttan. The villa had all the convenience of home and a great price. Very clean and the host very accommodating.
