Country Inn the City

Country Inn the City offers the perfect base to explore everything New York has to offer. It is located on the beautiful and relatively peaceful Upper West Side and is ideal for longer stays. The Inn is private, comfortable and homely, and provides convenient access to Central Park and attractions such as The Metropolitan Opera. I stayed in suite 5 (Collegiate Suite) which was spacious and well appointed. The local area has plenty of restaurants, a well-stocked market (ideal for self-catering) and various other amenities including a laundry a couple of doors away. The 79th Street subway station (train line 1) is only a couple of minutes away and provides convenient access to midtown and downtown Manhattan, including the Broadway theatre district, Chelsea, and Greenwich Village. Times Square subway station is a short train ride away and provides easy access to all other subway lines. Fergus and Rob and very accommodating and will gladly share their tips and advice for exploring the local area and New York in general. I would happily recommend Country Inn the City to anyone who is seeking a more personal alternative to the larger hotels, especially first-time visitors and those planning a longer stay.

We stayed in the Country Inn and it was all we hoped for. If anyone has worries about staying here for an extended period, don't be. This was our second time in New York. The first time we stayed just across Broadway in a hotel but this was so much better. Apartment #5 was roomy (much more than a standard hotel room), comfortable, with separate kitchen and bathroom. Not to mention the free wifi. Bonus! Both Rob and Fergus were very welcoming and friendly. Rob kept the apartment clean and tidy but wasn't intrusive like the "everyday cleaning"a normal hotel room can be. Local tips: Viand Cafe just down Broadway for a good NY diner experience. We had many breakfasts there. Irving Farm Coffee Co on 79th for a good coffee and bagel. Westside Market just around the corner to stock up the fridge and buy bagels and cream cheese. The laundry next door, fantastic! Cheap! $9 for the first 10lbs and then 90c for every lb after. Drop off in the morning, pick up when you get home from a hard day experiencing NYC. Lots of good restaurants on Amsterdam. Start at 77th and walk up into the 80's. Go out the front door, turn right, walk across to Central Park and relax for an afternoon if you have time. Or turn left, head over to the 79th Street Basin and take a walk down the Hudson River Park. We walked almost all the way down to Battery Park Transport: Walk. Or the M104 bus will take you down Broadway into the city. Or take the 1 train at 79th Street station. Or walk down to 72nd and catch the 2 or 3 (these don't stop at all stations so the trip is a little faster than the 1). To wrap up, we highly recommend staying at the Country Inn. We don't like the coldness of a hotel, so Country Inn the City was the perfect alternative to that. Having our own little kitchen made it possible to sleep in after all those late nights and leisurely make our own breakfast in our cozy little home away from home. Totally the perfect spot.

I absolutely LOVE Country Inn The City! The room was enormous by New York hotel standards and has everything you’ll need for an extended stay including a full bathroom with tub & shower (great water pressure!), a galley kitchen and your own climate control. The historic room was beautifully decorated in period style with plenty of books and oddities to peruse if you don’t feel like watching TV or using the lightning fast FREE WiFi. Many personal touches in the room make this bed & breakfast experience far preferable to a chain hotel or even other boutique hotels that look like they were stocked by IKEA or West Elm. Very clean. Excellent bedding & linens (great threadcount!) and the poster bed, hardwood floors and historic mantle with antlers make Country Inn The City the real deal! Conveniently located on New York’s Upper West Side between Broadway and West End Avenue – close to The American Museum of Natural History, Central Park, Riverside Park and more. Grab a cab on Broadway or take the #1 train nearby. The neighborhood is safe, walkable and has everything you need including breakfast joints, coffee, diners and an excellent market with prepackaged meals you can take back to your room to enjoy or cook your own food. The innkeepers made sure I knew where everything was, where to go for coffee, markets, subways, snacks…etc. I felt completely welcomed, comfortable and safe in the New York City. This personalized attention is something rare in today’s society and I feel good about supporting indie business. Overall, excellent value, superior location, easy to get around and Country Inn The City provides a welcomed haven and relaxing respite in the middle of Manhattan!

I spent just over a month here and found it an terrific place for an extended stay. I stayed in the Clarence Suite, a lovely studio apartment with kitchen and en suite bathroom. In other words, this is really something better than a b 'n' b or hotel. The neighborhood is very pleasant with several large markets and excellent restaurants. Plus it is just off the 1 subway line, so convenient to most of NYC. I can attest that the website photos are accurate (in case you're wondering if the suite is as attractive as the photo suggests). By the way, this website requires you to rate all five elements, although the Dining element isn't really applicable.

These accommodations were perfect -- everything from the comfort of the bed to the water pressure in the shower. The appearance, and attention to detail, was superb. We've stayed in a couple other locations in the area, & nothing touches this. Highly recommend.

The perfect NYC hideaway. It was like the good old days when my wife and I had an apartment in NY. We were not happy staying in the big chaotic hotels with all the distractions that go along with it. Country Inn was a cozy and peaceful Upper West side apartment in a fantastic neighborhood. We highly recommend this place for our fellow travelers.

My mom and I stayed in Apartment 5 at Country Inn The City and loved it! It's in a great location on the Upper West Side and having the kitchen was a real bonus. There's a market just around the corner where you can buy nearly anything you need during your stay and it was nice to have coffee and a light breakfast in the room before heading out for the day. We enjoyed having the setting area to watch TV and relax after coming back from a long day in the city. Rob keeps the place immaculate. The bathroom was the cleanest I've ever seen for a Hotel or Inn. The rooms are very well furnished and so cozy. It feels like you're a guest in someone's home. Very unlike anything else we've ever stayed in while visiting NYC. We will definitely stay here again!

Country Inn the City is a great place to stay if you want to pretend you are really living in NYC and not just another tourist! Apartment 6 with its outdoor terrace is cosy, charming & spacious with a kitchen and very comfortable bed with a firm & supportive mattress. I'll definitely be staying here again.

Country Inn the City is beautifully located in the southern part of the Upper West Side, two blocks from Zabar's for the best deli food in New York, one block from the Riverside Park, five minutes walk from Central Park. It is not a hotel but a fine old nineteenth-century house with a small number of rooms. We were in Apartment 5, a spacious room with a very comfortable bed, good sitting area, excellently-equipped kitchen, and an en-suite bathroom that may not have been of smart hotel standard but was clean and efficient, with an excellent shower. There aren't the normal hotel services but Rob, the on-site person responsible, was friendly and helpful and responded quickly when any problems arose. The sitting area and kitchen make it a great place to stay. We could buy bagels round the corner and have breakfast in the apartment, and buy really good food from Zabar's for an occasional dinner in. And Upper West Side is our favourite part of NYC to stay - after a hectic day further south in Manhattan one can return to the calm of UWS, with its good restaurants, bookshops, delis and parks. Yet it is only 10 minutes on the subway from midtown or Chelsea, or longer if one walks and enjoys the changing urban neighbourhoods. This was our first stay in Country Inn the City but it will now be our number one choice whenever we come to NYC. A great, comfortable and relaxing place to stay.

We spent four days in Country Inn the City and were very pleased with everything: location, apartment, equipment, and staff. We would recommend the B&B to everyone who looks for a charming place to stay and appreciate being able to make his/her own breakfast and perhaps other meals.

A bit late but better late than never. We had a fabulous and carefree holiday in your charming establishment in July. Everything was good and we enjoyed the closeness to Central Park and Broadway. Showers were great and very satisfactory and that is important ! Would come again in a flash!

Io e la mia ragazza abbiamo passato una settimana fantastica al Country inn the city, ci sembrava di avere una casa a NY tanto è vero che oltre la colazione a volte facevamo anche la cena nel ns. appartamento n. 4, tra central park e Riverside Park avevamo l'imbarazzo della scelta per la ns. corsetta quotidiana e poi quotidianamente passavamo da central park che è bellissimo, anzichè prendere la metro vicino casa. La zona è tranqullissima c'è un market a 50 mt che è fornitissimo, tutti i principali musei VICINI : AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY A 300 MT, METROPOLITAN E GUGGHENEIM A 1 KM attraversando Central park e MOMA un pochino più lontano ma facilmente raggiungibile a piedi un 2 km sempre passando dal parco intorno ci sono anche degli ottimi ristorantini vedi ZAGAT la guida migliore di New York per questo. First time to New York and I had the time of my life. This was the perfect place to stay while in Manhatten. You are within walking distance of Central Park, many great restaurants, and the Subway (1 train). The neighborhood is great and you fill extremely safe walking around at night. The room was very clean and the private balcony was awesome. I would recommend this B&B as the place to stay when you go to New York. Perfect Trip.

We throughly enjoyed our stay. The room was charming with an eye to detail and cleanliness. The location was perfect. It was easy to catch a cab or take a quick walk to the subway. So much to do just within walking distance. We will return! San Francisco, CA

Perfection is the word to describe Fergus O’Brien’s inn. My husband and I used to live in New York on the Upper West Side and wanted a place to stay where we could just hang out and pretend we still lived there. The gods must have heard us and directed us to The Country Inn the City on West 77th. Yes, it was perfect. We stayed in Apt. 6 with the terrace. This inn is amazing; the décor is exquisite and the attention to detail remarkable. Yet, the place is very comfortable and quiet. Breakfast and dinner on the terrace was sooo relaxing and we enjoyed having friends up for dinner (which we bought at the markets around the corner). Our New Yorker friends were impressed. Mr. O’Brien himself is a friendly and classy guy. Don’t resist this opportunity for a true New York experience. Our only regret is that we don’t live there, but you can bet we’ll be back at every opportunity. Elaine and Orrin

We spent 2 weeks in New York and our stay in Country Inn the city was delightful. Apartment 6 has a lovely little terrace where we enjoy breakfast every morning. Worth climbing to the 4th floor just to enjoy the terrace. The room was clean, comfortable and homely. My husband and I had a wonderful stay at Country Inn the City. The room was very clean and quiet. The bed was comfortable and the small kitchen was very convenient. The location was great. We had a short metro ride to downtown Manhattan and when we wanted to escape from all the crowds and noise we either walked or rode back to the inn. There were several grocery stores and restaurants close by so we were able to save on our food costs. I would stay here again.

We took two self-contained apartments in Country Inn the City in February. This accommodation was truly delightful. Home comfort. There are only a small number of apartments in this Inn and each has a 'home away from home' feel. Country-style furnishings delightful, as you will see on their Website. All amenities were excellent. A great 24-hour food market just around the corner. One just needs to be able to walk up stairs if in one of the top apartments. The location is great - just minutes from a quick bus ride to the Met Museum. Walking distance to the Museum of Natural History, Central Park, Lincoln Centre, etc. We had a wonderful stay and absolutely loved New York. Found it very safe where we were, and everywhere people truly kind and helpful. On reading this review it may look as though I've been bribed to write it!! ABSOLUTELY NOT true! Live like a real New Yorker in a spacious apartment (much larger than what you would find in a NYC hotel) and enjoy the independence of being a tenant during your stay. Personally, I loved that we were on our own without the hassle and hustle/bustle of a noisy/busy hotel. This felt like a home away from home. Quiet and ideal neighbourhood, beautiful apartment and excellent location.

I was so pleasantly surprized to see the character of old New York City yet such a clean environment. I loved staying here. Much better than any hotel. I went down to the local market and bought a supply of bagels and cream cheese as well as some awesome fruit which I enjoyed every morning. Just down the road is the best hot chocolate I have ever had too. Just spoilt!! Many thanks Fergus.

I loved this place. It was perfectly located on the Upper West side, close to 24 hr markets, shops, restaurants, etc. For the price, it's a gem...a huge space, like having your own studio apartment, complete with fully equipped kitchen, which came in handy when you want to cook your own meals and save a bit of cash. The bed was incredibly comfortable and it had every convenience, plus loads of charm. I felt like part of the neighborhood instead of a tourist, which is exactly what I wanted! I would recommend this place to anyone who is staying a few days in NY. They only accept cash or travelers cheques upfront, so be prepared to pay in advance. I highly recommend this place to all. The staff was courteous and flexible. If you require round the clock attention and concierge like service, then this is probably not the place for you. However, if you want to enjoy the charms of the UWS like a local, this is the place for you!

We recently completed our third week-long visit at this little gem north of Lincoln Center. The high-ceilinged apartment rooms with fireplaces hark back to a more gracious era when the city was filled with residences of this style. Each unit has a bedroom/sitting room tastefully furnished with antiques and eclectic objets d'art. The well-equipped kitchenette saves you having to eat out all the time. There are thoughtful touches everywhere which make it feel like home. Best of all is the location just a few blocks north of Lincoln Center and very near the subway at Broadway and 79th St.

Fantastic find. just loved this place. Location cant be beat, fantastic rooms and fatastic service. Fergus, the host, is delightful! Cant say enough good things about this place, and I have stayed at my share of NYC dumps. Intimate, yet private. Feels like your own apartment. I'll be back.

Just returned to Australia after a great stay in very cold, snowy New York City. Thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of this wonderful town. Particularly enjoyed staying at Country Inn The City. For those who like a cosy, home-away-from-home atmosphere with plenty of space, ambience and really great location you can't go wrong. Having had a couple of rather unsuccessful stays in NYC (due to over-priced, cramped, unpleasant hotel rooms) accommodation as good as this at a perfectly reasonable rate and so well located can really change the way you feel about a city......I love New York. Thanks a bunch.

My husband and I spent 10 days at Country Inn The City (sept. 2009) and it was great in every way....not the least the location, location, location. It was clean and beautifully furnished and had everything needed (and more) in the kitchen. Nice market for awesome food selection just round' the corner. Close to everything...also, almost zero street noise. If and when I visit nyc again, i would stay here without hesitation. renee blackwell

Hidden gem in a brilliant location - Upper West Side, close to restaurants, markets, shops, Central Park, Subway, Museums. Everything about this Inn was wonderful - quiet, great bed, fresh fruit bowl. Do not even consider staying in a large impersonal hotel over this delightful, small establishment. Aussies loved it...

Great location, just a short walk from Broadway, the subway and Central Park. The room was a good size, comfortable and the decoration was quirky (which I enjoyed). Close to plenty of good shops and restaurants. Perfect for a solo woman traveller who prefers to eat in at night using the little kitchen. I was very appreciative of the free wireless Internet. The Country Inn was spacious, clean, and comfortable. The location was fantastic. The subway is just around the corner and so is Zabars and the World Market! Great neighborhood to explore. Rob met us and let us drop our bags off early. We really enjoyed our stay.

I stayed at the Country Inn the City for three nights in July. On arrival I was greeted by Rob and shown my apartment where I could leave my bags until the room was made up. I was informed of everything I needed to know about my stay and made to feel very welcome. The apartment (#2) was beautiful! More than anything I expected! I felt right at home and perfectly safe in this lovely neighbourhood, with two amazing markets just around the corner and the subway only minutes away. The kitchen area was well stocked with everything you could need and the bedroom was amazingly comfortable! The air conditioning was set just right, so the room was cool, but not cold, there was brandy on the bedside table, cereals and a few other bits in the kitchen; they really do value their guests comfort here. I have already recommended Country Inn the City to friends and would definitely stay here again!

We stayed at Country Inn the City for 4 nights in June and absolutely loved our time there. The beds are as comfortable as they promise on the website. The location is very quiet and very convenient (2 short blocks from the subway). The sitting area in our apartment actually had comfortable chairs (a rarity!), and the room was very spacious. Add in the wi/fi, kitchenette, shower/tub combo and lots of hot water...and why would you stay anywhere else?

For my first visit to NY I could not have picked a better place to stay. We felt like we were actually living in NY and not just visiting. There is no reception desk so it's totally private and you can come and go as you please. We were in Apt 5 (March 1 to March 16 2009 it looks right onto West 77th Street. Shops and food closeby and a very hand Laundromat service 3 doors down

We stayed at the Country Inn the City (Apartment 4) for 8 nights in August and we really liked it: we felt welcome and enjoyed our time. The place was like an oasis. Everything was absolutely perfect! We are certainly planning to come again.

I brought my fiancee to New York to celebrate her birthday and decided to find an alternative to a hotel as we're considering moving here. Country Inn the City was a great choice. It was like having our own studio without having to do any of the work. My fiancee gasped when she entered the room (Room #2). It was beautifully appointed, very clean and, being in the back of the buiding, it was very quiet. It's a half-block off Broadway and close to restaurants, markets, shops, Central Park and the subway. We felt as if we were truly living an Upper West Side lifestyle at a very reasonable price. Fergus was very easy to deal with and very communicative. Our dining rating does not indicate any displeasure on our part. As Fergus has noted in his repsone to some of the reviews here, Country Inn the City is not a true bed and breakfast as no breakfast is offered (though there are some basic food supplies in the kitchen). However, we knew this going in and it worked fine for us.

Just want to thank you for the excellent experience from beginning to end at Country Inn the City. We loved the accommodations, and felt quite at home in the city...enjoyed the fresh fruit, coffee/tea, cereal, milk, and even tried the brandy you left for us. The ivy covered trellis porch was perfect for enjoying the beginning and the end of each day, and we slept like logs in the quiet comfort of the beautifully decorated bedroom area. The place was exceptionally clean, welcoming and exceeded all expectations for our last minute arrangements to stay in the city. Many thanks for a memorable weekend in NYC. We stayed 10 night at "Country inn the city" Aim was to stay in a pleasant and peacefull place to discover NY and enjoy new-yorkers way of living. Target has been 100% met, thanks to this great place and trought various strong key points: - Perfect location : almost along broadway (with its subway and taxis), so close to Central park , and also all comoditees at 1 min walking (Fairway and restaurants) - Peacefull and confortable place for having a good rest after hard walking day visiting the city, - cleanest appartmenent - Typical NY appartement furnishing and atmosphere - Reasonnable prices for this room size and location compared to high/medium range hotels in Upper west side. If we have a chance to come back in NYC, we already know where to stay... and so should you!

we found out about country inn the city by watching a t.v show on b&b. it looked so beautiful, that we decided to stay there the next time we go to the city. And we look forward coming back for christmas. thank you.

Stayed for three nights over the winter. After a busy day in the city you actually look forward to coming "home" to your apartment at the Inn.

Country Inn the City is a wonderful, centrally located inn with the all the service and amenities that made our stay so enjoyable.

Country Inn' s decor is elegant with charming details. The room was very comfortable (we used the sofabed and it was new and very comfortable, which is rare). The location couldn't be better in terms of subway/bus access and proximity to two famous grocery stores, Zabar's and Fairways to help prepare your meals in a spotless kitchen, already well stocked with breakfast items. It's very quiet and private. Perfect for a quiet or romantic getaway.

Stayed for 1 week at Country Inn the City. Lovely room with great heating on cold winter days. Easy access to transport but on a quiet street. Coming back after a day exploring NY felt like you were coming back to your own apartment!

Please note that although we very much appreciate our guests kind remarks that we are not a high service establishment but do live on site for emergencies and do provide light cleaning for longer stays (every 3 or 4 days).

If you are self-sufficient, and want to feel like you LIVE in Manhattan instead of being just a visitor, this is a great choice. The rooms are very large by NY standards, with a full kitchen and bath, and the place has real personality, comfort, and charm. Their website very accurately describes and pictures the building and the rooms. It's in a real NY neighborhood where you are immersed in the life of the City, not just surrounded by other tourists. All transportation options are at your doorstep. Be aware that breakfast is some high-quality coffee, milk, butter, jam, and fruit left in your room upon your arrival -- after that you're on your own. The manager, Rob, is very available and helpful if you have a genuine problem, but this is not a place for people who expect a concierge or front desk services. It is a peaceful, quiet, spacious oasis in a crazy city, and an EXCELLENT deal at the price point. I am a repeat visitor, and I will be back!

Great location. Exceptionally clean. Comfortable and well decorated.

I didn't know what to expect, having booked Country Inn the City over the internet and based on a couple of reviews. But I must say, I was "Wowed!". Completely clean with a fabulous four poster bed with THE most luxiours sheets and mattress I have slept in. I felt like I was living in the city. The room is more like an apartment with private kitchen and bath that were spotless and shiney. A fantastic fresh food market around the corner and I was set. The view out the window from my room, Apartment 4, faced the rear courtyard with vine covered walls. Air conditioned or I could open my window for fresh air. The neighborhood is quaint and near the street of Broadway for subway or taxi. A great 4 block walk to Central Park or 1 block from a walking path around the river. The Country Inn the City was exceptional in email and phone conversation and I had no problems checking in at all. Rob showed me Apartment 4 and was there for any questions. The room was quiet at night as well. Hot water and great shower pressure. A little alcove next to the window had a love seat and a marble table top eating area was divine. A non-working fire place faced the bed and did I say the room was clean!! No bugs at all was spotted while I was there. Country Inn the City exceeded my expectations.

We very much liked Country Inn the City. It really is like you have your own little apartment in New York. It's close to a lot of bars and a 5 dollar cab ride to more. Free wireless was handy. We even found parking outside with little problems. The room was well-decorated and clean. They kind of just check you in and leave you alone, which we liked (but that was for only a 2 night stay). Of course it was expensive, but I am from the Midwest. I am sure by NY standards it was very reasonable. The kitchenette was fully stocked with supplies, and there is a cute little market just around the corner. I fixed breakfast there one morning. Next time we plan a trip to NYC, we will book here again.

One of the things that made my 1 week stay in Manhattan so easy was Country Inn the City! Within a day I felt right at home and perfectly safe in this lovely neighborhood, W 77th and Broadway. Our studio was a peaceful retreat to come home to for an hour or so before we ventured out for dinner at one of the great neighborhood restaurants. I will definitely stay at Country Inn on my next visit.
