Amsterdam Castle Bed & Breakfast

My son turned eleven and for those of you who know the Harry Potter books, that's the birthday when wizards get their acceptance letters to Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Yes, we could have gone to Florida for Universal and do the Harry Potter thing there, but we only had the weekend and we also wanted to do something more unique, so we found this castle. Let me tell you my son has never hugged me more in his life. He would just look up at me and say, "This is the best birthday ever!" He loved imagining living in this world and had an amazing time! The huge gym with all the gym equipment was perfect for my boys and the fact that the owners' sons came out and played made the stay even better! Wonderful breakfasts, very cozy beds. Lovely.

I took my boyfriend here as a surprise for his birthday last year (the idea was to make him "king for a weekend!") and we just adored it! Not to mention the owners are gracious decorators, hosts and chefs!! The rooms are spectacularly furnished. Famous presidents have dined and stayed here over the years. The upstairs room has incredible acoustics. We played some unplugged guitar and the sound was incredible. It was one of the best weekends we've ever had!!

The castle was outstanding. Our accommodations were very clean and nicely appointed. Susan and Manfred could not have been any nicer or accommodating. They are both very knowledgeable about the town, it's history and the surrounding area. They went above and beyond expectations, even during very stressful circumstances. A tornado had touched down followed by a very bad thunderstorm which knocked out the power and they did everything they could to make us comfortable and safe. They also have a very nice family which made us feel very welcome. Thank you Susan and Manfred for a very nice and interesting stay.

We were not sure what to expect but were delighted with the accomodations,the tour of the castle , the recommnedations for meals and for recommendations for things to do... the oweners were so very interesting to talk with.. couldn't have had a better erperience!!!

The castle was very nice. The room we stayed in was The Officers Qtrs. Upon arrival we were met by Susan, she gave us a tour and offered their garage to park our motorcycle. The bed was comfortable and there was coffee maker, though there were no filters. The room was clean and the furnishings were nice. Susan recommended a nice restaurant down the street for supper. Be advised they only serve a continental breakfast and that was not up to par. The Inn keepers were not easily available. There was a situation that arose after we arrived, the town announced that the water would be shut off at 7:30am so Susan made us aware and offered a partial refund.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The accomodations were wonderful and host Manfred was most congenial. It was very interesting to learn about local armories which played pivotal roles in the formation of militias and national guards. The Schroeders

Susan and Manfred were amazing hosts greeting us as we pulled in, assisting with carrying our bags to the room and giving us a tour of the castle. The room was absolutely beautiful and extremely cozy and breakfast was delicious. My girlfriend and I still talk about the heated bed and how comfortable it was. We truly felt like a king and queen. I would definitely stay at the castle again. Highly recommended.

This BandB was a nice surprise to lodge in. Unique property with lots of history and Susan was very entertaining and friendly. We enjoyed our stay and would come back again.

An adventure! Beter then many hotels/ rooms in "our" Amsterdam (NL).

The rooms we had were huge...a large sitting room, separate bedroom,and bathroom with separate shower and huge clawfoot tub. Susan and Manfred were very accommodating--Susan took us on a tour of the castle--including the roof! There is a wonderful Italian restaurant across the street--delicious food and very reasonable.

My wife and I have stayed at several Bed and Breakfast Inns over the past 30 years and this tops our list. We were in the area for our son's graduation and had the time of our lives. The Phemister family treated us as if we were the King and Queen of the Castle. The room was perfect. The Italian resturant within a block was the "Cheers" of the town. If you want a great value and experience, stay here. You will not regret it.

I've stayed at several B&B's over the years, but this was the best experience by far!! Being in a "castle" meant my men really enjoyed our stay (pool table & basketball available round the clock!) too. Our hosts were very welcoming and accommodating - even bringing an additional fan to our rooms for my comfort after observing one of my frequent "power surges"! The rooms were much larger than we expected and finding a kettle (in addition to the coffee maker) in room to make tea was a delight! I highly recommend this B&B.

It's great to see interesting historic properties renovated into B&Bs and Amsterdam Castle provides a rich experience. The Officer's Wing is nicely laid out with the main bedroom within a round turret. And breakfast in the Kennedy Room evokes a regal air. Definitely one of the most interesting places to spend the night in the area!

When I was a child, the romantic lure of the castle had me climbing its walls and running on its grass. This past week I was able to return to my birthplace as an adult, and take a walk down memory lane. How exciting it was to see that not only was our armory still standing - - - - it had become a show palace B&B. I had the chance to tour inside the castle and found it to be exceptionally charming with an old world feel. The interior decorating was perfect for the era it was built in. When next I return to Amsterdam, I will definitely stay there. It is just too unique and lovely to pass up! Kelli Brown Samson

Amsterdam Castle is the most unique B & B I have stayed in. I stayed again on the way home from Boston. Very inexpensive and lovely. There is a restaurant in Amsterdam(walk there) that is amazing. It is Italian, and has been there 30 yrs. I had the best blackened, charbroiled steak I have had in 20 yrs.

How crazy that there is such a castle in America! I enjoyed the military history of the building. They just don't build them like they used to. Clearly the family has done a thoughtful and attractive renovation. I liked using the wifi while sitting on the front moat. The past and the present mixed together

I visited from Germany and really liked the castle! I Played basketball in the gym, enjoyed the nearby bicycle path and relaxed on the lawn in front of the castle.

Plenty of room to spread out in "our wing". We enjoyed the history and the beautiful restorations The Phemister's have achieved. Wonderful breakfast brought to our suite.

This castle is so authentic. The good hosts are the innkeepers. Warm and friendly reception. Spacious rooms, just what you need for a nice stay.

We loved our overnight stay at Amsterdam Castle. Very unique, and as bicyclists, it was within minutes of a paved, level bicycling path that runs along the canal. The inn was close to a restaurant that had great food and drink. Staying here was like staying in a time castle. We appreciated the tour and the history of the building. Breakfast was excellent. Host and hostess were welcoming, helpful and informative but not intrusive. We'll be back for more biking and more hospitality.

It was an experience to remember. I visited several castles in Germany and I always hoped I would one day have an opportunity to spend a night in a castle. This weekend I came very close. It didn't feel like I was in a bed and breakfast home but a castle in the middle of Europe. Come and see for your self. Historic Saratoga is close by.

I have family in the area and have always had a problem finding a nice place to stay so I am thrilled to have found such a great gem. What started out as a family trip turned into a great getaway due to European feel of the place. The rooms were very spacious and well appointed. The innkeeper was fantastic and exceeded my expectations in all areas of customer service. I look forward to my next stay there.

I'm actually an Amsterdam local that was looking for something different to celebrate an anniversary with my girlfriend... and what a great choice this ended up being! All I can say is EUROPE... I live 1/2 of the year in Southern Italy and have become used to historic settings, great hospitality and cozy rooms (not to mention great deals.) The Amsterdam Castle had all that and more! It was a nice surprise because I have come not to expect those attributes from American stays but this was a winner... and it was right in my own backyard!! ...who would have thought?

who expects to stay in a castle in upstate new york? but there it was right in amsterdam, looming above us as we arrived. I loved the European feel and the Nutella they served with warm croissants. And the claw foot tub was a great touch. Manfred speaks German which was a big help for my partner. full of charm and great hospitality.

The charming owners speak French and German and they were the ultimate and sophisticated hosts. the Officers Wing Bedroom was beyond romantic and we had a very memorable stay."

It is quite something to be shown one's private wing in the castle. The rooms are all decorated in style with the building and contain loads of interesting furniture and decoration details. The Kennedy room is amazing, makes you want to throw a huge dinner party with fabulous trays of food and lots of friends. I loved the feeling of the building which was complemented by the warm welcome from the Phemister family who lives in the castle and runs the B&B. An absolute must for anyone looking for a comfortable and stylish stay in the area.
