The Raritan Inn at Middle Valley

  • Inn Details

The Raritan Inn opened in June 2006 as an upscale bed and breakfast in Califon, New Jersey. We are located on twenty-four acres on the banks of the South Branch of the Raritan River. The Inn has five guest rooms, each with private bath and spa shower, satellite TV, wireless high-speed internet and a fireplace. The Inn is consciously committed to an "eco-friendly" experience. Our objective is to minimize energy consumption while generating power from natural sources. In fact, the innkeeper's cottage is a Civil War vintage house that operates as a residential power plant. The Raritan Inn provides a full breakfast each morning, served in our dining room at individual tables or on the stone patio with the relaxing sounds of a gently burbling stream in the background. The Raritan Inn is located in the area of Northwest New Jersey once known as the “German Valley.” It is noted for its fine restaurants, many antique shops, historic towns, outdoor recreation, and local theaters.

The Raritan Inn was exactly what we were looking for - a non-traditional venue that had character, warmth, charm and endless possibilities for our Fall 2011 wedding. As our wedding weekend rapidly approached, both the owner Marcia and Innkeeper John helped answer ALL of our questions and concerns, particularly about the logistics of the weekend. We were able to visit the Inn throughout our planning process in order to help us more fully envision our day and also to ensure that we had the correct measurements etc for our DIY decorations and projects. The weekend of our wedding, John, the Innkeeper was indispensible – helping with the delivery of some of our rentals, checking our Inn guests in, and problem solving some last minute details that we overlooked in the planning process. The guests that stayed at the Inn with us were blown away by the beauty and character of the Inn itself. The rooms were warm and cozy (especially with the fireplaces in the bedrooms!) and John made each of us feel at home in the common areas. The breakfasts at the Inn are absolutely amazing! John took time out of his busy schedule to answer questions about the Inn’s history, as well as some of the natural history of the area. We are thrilled that we chose the Raritan Inn for our wedding. Our guests are still talking about the venue, and how unique and intimate the setting was. We were fortunate to hold our ceremony outside, down by the river and we couldn’t have chosen a more beautiful backdrop. The barn and rented tent made for a one of a kind setting for our cocktail hour and reception. Our only regret is that the entire weekend went way too fast for us and we can’t remember all of the details and wish we could turn back time to that weekend. The Raritan Inn exceeded our expectations. Thank you John and Marcia for helping us with the wedding experience we had dreamed of, we would highly recommend the Raritan Inn to anyone! Kate and Tim

We stayed at the Raritan Inn the weekend of July 23/24 this summer and it absolutely surpassed our expectations! The location is serene, the Inn grounds are lovely, the rooms are wonderful...new but with a charming sense of history, quaintness with a nice flavor of modern day technology to add the location. Breakfast was wonderful as prepared by Holly....who was so thoughtful and caring. Bob and Kim

The Raritan Inn is the best bed and breakfast we have ever stayed in. We stayed there during one of our fishing excursions - June 4 2011. The Inn itself is very beautiful, the food is great, the rooms are very clean and cozy and the hospitality is wonderful. We had two great fishing days staying at the Raritan Inn guided by Shannon's Fly Shop. Bill and Marcia made us feel so comfortable from the moment we met them, we felt like family. We are looking forward to many more stays at the beautiful Raritan Inn. We would recommend the Inn to anyone. P.S) The homemade blueberry muffins and cookies are awesome!!! Thanks to Bill and Marcia. A warm and efficient welcome, effective in enabling us to promptly borrow their bikes to explore the Columbia trail. Excellent carbon negative ethos used to restore the house which is an important local historic landmark. The bed was very comfortable. Margy was knowlegeable about interesting local history. In the basement is a wonderful vintage juke box, pinball machine and pool table. Where else can you boogey to 60's music while trying to play pool!

We have been celebrating at the Inn since our wedding in August 2008. I grew-up in Califon and my family used to drive by the building before it was the Inn. We used to wonder what it would look like if someone renovated it and were absolutely delighted when the current owners completely revolutionized it. The Inn is stunning, Margie is wonderful, and we look forward to our visit each year. We highly recommend the Raritan Inn to everyone we know and love.
