Respite in a charmiing neighborhood

5 on September 22, 2015

My husband and I recently stayed in Asheville for 2 nights at Vicki and Neeraj's B&B. everything about it was delightful...breakfast, serene setting, hosts. It is dog-friendly to boot. We enjoyed the other guests and the location was perfect for getting around Asheville.

Avoid this "green" bed and no-breakfast like the plague!

Made these reservations when I was in a pinch for a work trip. All of the rooms were available a week before the trip, a sign right there that business is slow. Unfortunately I didn't read the online reviews for this place and the owner's extremely rude and unprofessional responses, otherwise I would have steered clear of this place. No amenities, owners refuse to acknowledge you (if they are even at home), confusing website directions and signage, overpowering damp clay smell, unattended dogs of Hades in the owner's quarters. One (of many) examples of disappointing experience: the first morning at 8:15am there was no sign of activity in the eating area, and I needed to head out for my work. No coffee/tea station that I've seen at all of the b&bs/hotels I've been to. So I knocked on the kitchen door. A lady appears and is immediately standoff-ish with her dry "Yes?" instead of a friendly greeting. I introduced myself and inquired about breakfast. She curtly replied that I should read the back of my door. She said it is clearly stated on the back of the door (where I didn't look, because typically that's where emergency exit and check-out time information is provided) the breakfast times. She refused to serve us breakfast or even give us coffee. When I checked the back of the door, it stated "We serve breakfast between 8:30 to 9:30 unless you need otherwise.” Well, we needed “otherwise.” And she refused to provide us with a service that we paid for and is one of the two key features of a “bed and breakfast.” That was extremely disappointing. If you find tranquility and happiness in crazy dogs, rude hosts, funny smells, hefty price tags, and greenwashing, this is the place for you. If not, I recommend you keep looking for a better place, like a true b&b. Hopefully this review is useful to whoever reads it. Cue the owner’s snarky response.

My husband and I decided to go to the Film Festival in Asheville at the last minute. Hotels are ridiculously priced in the downtown area and we prefer B&B's anyway. We found all of our needs met in this lovely "green" cottage. We stayed in the Africa room and it was very spacious. I like the fact that there was no TV, but I understand you can get one upon request. Breakfast was delicious and our hosts Vicki and Neeraj were very gracious.

Vicki and Neeraj were friendly, helpful, and gracious. The cottage was beautiful, cozy, close to the sites, and easy to get to. The room was comfortable and clean. The breakfast was delicious and filling. Great!

Quiet, simple living

This B&B touts itself as a 'green' option and it does not disappoint on this note. Everything from linens to soaps to breakfast are all-natural or organic. The breakfasts are quite good and include mixed fresh fruit. The innkeeper (Vicki) makes sure the day's menu accommodates your tastes, food sensitivities and/or allergies before cranking up the stove. Coffee & hot teas are offered with breakfast but not any juices (and we asked). The Zen Garden Room was spacious, decorated simply & had lots of windows looking out at the front garden. The bed was quite comfortable. No TV or clock in the room. The bathroom was bright and had a nice tub/shower, however the sink & mirror were outfitted for shorter persons (under 6' tall). Humid weather during our stay made our room stuffy, even with the central A/C on, so we requested a oscillating fan so we could sleep comfortably. Both innkeepers seemed "removed". Neither were home when we arrived so we were provided a numerical code to let ourselves in. We had to contact Vicki by cell phone to let her know we had arrived & to ask about the oscillating fan. We saw Neeraj only momentarily during our visit and that meeting seemed to be by accident. Apparently, both have jobs or obligations outside of the B&B. We are used to being personally greeted by innkeepers, shown our room, various amenities pointed out, so forth. We had long chats with Vicki right before & after breakfast but rarely saw her, otherwise, even in the evenings. They have two very sweet, friendly dogs. We must point out that the house is on a steep hill so there are long, steep outside steps both front & back with no noticeably easier alternative to get to the house. If you have trouble with steps or are bringing bulky luggage, this could present some difficulty.

Innkeeper Response
It sounds as if you had a nice stay with us. We strive to give our guests lots of freedom and not the requirement of a special check in time. Our decor is markedly different from most B&B and most of our guests find the lack of frills quite refreshing. I'm surprised that you were not comfortable in your room. We've never had anyone not cool enough in this room. We are very often here, but do not spend all our time in the B&B. And of course are always here in the mornings and evenings, and available by phone to answer your questions and meet your needs. I just spent a half hour or more - it's 5:00 - with lovely guests, getting them all settled in and making dinner reservations for them.

Simple, comfortable lodgings; lovely innkeepers

I've stayed at the Asheville Green Cottage numerous times over the last 5-6 years. I generally try to stay at B & Bs instead of hotels because I like the individuality of the lodgings and the innkeepers, so I've stayed at quite a few over the years, and AGC is one of my favorites. It's a wonderful change of pace from the typical, flowery Victorian style of most B & Bs. I never stay anywhere else when I go to Asheville, which is about once a year. Vicki and Neeraj are friendly and attentive and the breakfasts are delicious. The inn is tucked away in a quiet neighborhood that's very convenient to the Biltmore and 5-10 minutes away from downtown. As with most B & Bs, each of the inn's four rooms is decorated in a unique style and all are very comfortable. Unlike most B & B's, however, they feature eco-friendly mattresses, bedding, towels, and toiletries and are decorated simply (though not plainly). I can't recommend this place highly enough.

A very pleasant experience!

It's always such a great experience when a stay at a B and B exceeds your expectations. We recently stayed with Vicki and Neeraj (in the Africa room) and it was a wonderful experience. My wife and I have stayed in B and Bs all over the country. The bottom line is you want a very comfortable bed, a clean overall home, good food and hopefully good conversation. Asheville Green Cottage had all of that and more. It was a great stay and we highly recommend this B and B.

awesome green b&b

the out-of-africa room was spacious! The breakfast was awesome too... fruit bowl, muffins, scramble eggs w/ sun-dried tomato, pesto, asaga cheese, fair-traded coffee. yum! very eco-minded place. Good efforts in living green!
