About

Birk's Gasthaus is a comfortable old Victorian mansion, built in 1886. With some period furniture in the formal ladies parlour, and Claw foot tubs in most of the rooms (some with showers), 8 foot doors and transoms, the mansion is again being used to entertain guests. We have added a Game Room with a 50" Plasma TV, Poker Table, and soon will have a full size Pool Table. Or you can relax on our wraparound covered Verandah and enjoy our quiet location. Only three blocks from Stone Hill Winery and Vintage Resturant.

Don't let the website fool you

1.6 on November 03, 2014

This is nothing like the website. In fact we were told it was the prior owners site. We were in room three. The sheets were balled up and looked like they had been slept in. The bathtub had soap scum In it as did the soap dish on the sink. There was a hole in the floor and plastic on the windows so you could not open the windows. The so called brass bed was missing pieces and squeeked every time you turned over. Dead bugs on the floor and you get the picture. We left after one night.

Nice one night visit.

It is a very interesting house. Three stories tall. The steps from floor 2 to 3 are pretty steep. I don't have a lot of Bed and Breakfast experience but this was really nice. Our host did his best to accommodate everyone (including gluten free meal for one guest). Hermann, MO has a lot to offer from bicycling (what drew us) to wine to food.

Room for improvement

3.2 on October 16, 2014

Birk's Gasthaus, now called Herzog Mansion, has some real pluses. There's plenty of room for decent-sized groups with lots of couples; it's conveniently located within walking distance of downtown Hermann, and the owner is very hospitable. There is room for improvement, however. This is an old mansion, and its age shows. It's obvious the owners are putting work into making improvements. But the home is so large. It looks like an overwhelming task. Our bed was cozy, but -- and I hesitate to sound snobby -- the sheets were not-so-great. I promise I'm not one of those bazillion thread count snobs, but the bottom sheet wouldn't stay on the bed, and the top sheet was just not soft. Our room had only a tub. No shower. I believe some rooms have showers, but if that's important to you, make sure you mention it when booking. Breakfast each morning was very good. That said, the dining room is somewhat institutional for a bed and breakfast. There's a lovely, formal dining room, but breakfast is served in a room with plastic table clothes. The food was great, though. We loved the big wrap around porch. It was a lovely place to sit and have a cup of coffee in the morning. We also really loved how spacious our room was. There are ample common areas where guests can sit and chat, play games or watch television. That was nice. The price was similar to other bed and breakfasts in the area. All in all, definitely worth a try! Enjoy.

Great Place to Relax

Very charming 3 story Victorian home with very comfortable rooms and service. Breakfast was outstanding and is about a mile outside the main part of Herman so it is very quiet and relaxing but still within walking distance of wineries.

Celebrating 45 Years together!!

We had been to Hermann before but wanted to try out a different B & B. We certainly enjoyed the quiet hometown atmosphere of Birk's. Richard was a gracious host and served delicious, generous breakfasts both days.

Check in was much later than desired, but there is plenty to do in town if you still arrive early. Bring earplugs just in case you have noisy neighbors though!

50th Birthday stay

4.0 on May 18, 2014

We reserved several rooms for family and friends for my husband's 50th birthday. The rooms were comfortable and large, but not luxurious. The best part was the availability of several common areas where our group could comfortably congregate. All in all a wonderful experience.

Old world charm

4.0 on May 04, 2014

If you love historical buildings, you will LOVE Birks Gasthaus. My husband and I stayed here for an overnight getaway and fell in love with this place. The owner met us at the door and treated us like family. The building is beyond beautiful for those that love history. The rooms with the smaller beds are really quite small by today's standards, but are typical for that era. They serve a full breakfast and were very accommodating with changing the time so that we could leave early enough to attend ShelbyFest. My husband and I look forward to staying here every time we visit Hermann.

Quaint, Has Character

3.8 on April 29, 2014

Came off a bike ride on the KATY trail and found an old mansion badly need in refurbishing and maintenance, and a lawn full of weeds needing care; but at the same time the mansion was quaint, inviting, and charming. Inn keeper was personable and a great cook! Would do it again. Don't expect a 5 star facility.
