Lovely experience, pity about the trains!

    May 06, 2013

This was our first time visiting and staying at an historic bed & breakfast. Our room was delightful and the setup for breakfast the next morning was absolutely charming. We really enjoyed our visit except for the trains. Five trains hooting and rumbling through during the night was not a pleasant experience! I know the owners can't do anything about the trains since they run right next to the house but it would have been good to know this before booking. However the fact that they welcomed our dog was exceptional and made the visit worthwhile. :-)

    Travel with the dog

    October 26, 2012

Guests were myself (70s), son (40s), and a Weimaraner mix (6 months). We were returning to Iowa from a family visit to Louisiana following my niece's death, and treated ourselves to two nights in Vicksburg. We were in the guest quarters, adjacent to the main house. Stayed in the Natchez suite: parlor with door to front of house, French doors (curtained) to bedroom, bath off bedroom, kitchen at back of the suite with door opening to veranda, which was across the back and one side of the house and had comfortable furniture for sitting outdoors. There was a pool between the guest quarters and the main house, but we didn't use it. Bed was comfortable, sofabed in parlor good of its kind (the dog preferred my bed and kept sneaking in to sleep with me). Furniture attractive and the bedspread so beautiful I took it off in case the dog's claws damaged it. Breakfast was served at 9 AM in the main house and was elegant and delicious on both days. Since we happened to be the only guests on our weekday visit, the hosts joined us and gave useful information about things to do. Carolyn loaned us a tour CD for our visit to the battlefield park, and recommended restaurants with patio dining so we could keep the dog with us. The hosts have dogs and cats of their own, and the black lab Raven played nicely with our Pepper. We never felt that our pet was an imposition, and really enjoyed our stay. If we are in Vicksburg again we'll hope to get these rooms if they are available (next year is the Vicksburg sesquicentennial so it would be a great time to return).

    Annabelle - One Night Stay

    August 08, 2012

Stayed in Wisteria Room, corner room next to street, difficult to cool, only few yards from highly active train track. Owner supplied ear plugs, but not effective, multiple horn blasts each time train passed during night. Seemed to be two hour schedule for our stay. Not disclosed prior to 4pm check-in, too late to easily find other pet friendly accommodations. Bath very small, shower curtain thin, divided into three sections, two of which clinged to body, difficult to bathe, worse if have claustraphobic tendencies. Bath soap not supplied, only few small rose petal shaped pieces of soap coated cloth. Inadequate for cleansing hands, much less the body. Inadequate space for toiletries. No closet, no place to hang clothes. Only one chair available for use, other chair used by owner for bed comforter and decorative pillows. Pool lining stained, gave appearance of mildew contamination. No view of the Mississippi River as advertised, maybe possible during Winter months from top floor of main building. No guided tour offered, as advertised. Did not take advantage of Southern breakfast. Dream Escape package at $100 for evening not a good value. Dinner coupon of $50 useable at one restaurant, two $5 tickets to the Court House Museum useful for quick visit, but Museum closed at 5pm, reopened 1:30 next day - long after intended departure. Remaining $30 of package must have been to cover rental of CD for drive through Military Park. Extremely pricey, given the package did not cover $8 fee for entering park. Very disappointed at $155 for room for one night. Hard to believe property recently rated among best B & B's in South. Suggest you annonomously book a Summer Saturday night stay in Annabelle's Wisteria room and then tell me if you think it was one of the best nights you've ever had at a B & B.

    Innkeeper Response
I agree you should book a stay ay Annabelle. I believe you will find that you have an enjoyable stay. It is unfortunate that this guest did not. If any disatification had been brought to my attention I would have done my best to serve their needs. There indeed is a closet in the room and of course soap was supplied there is a quilt rack for the comforter. Why this guest chose to mislead the public is a mystery to me.

Nice on the surface, but . . .

    August 05, 2012

I have stayed in over 1000 B&Bs in the US and Europe. Each one is different; that’s one of the things I enjoy. The differences at Annabelle’s were not so enjoyable. On the surface, it’s lovely. Victorian house, well-groomed entrance, period decor. Diningroom is set elaborately, with salt cellars, knife rests and elegant glassware. Our bed was very comfortable. Below the surface, though, one sees many signs of decay and need for repair; the desk chair in our room fell apart when we tried to use it, for example. Our big disappointment was hospitality and service. Paul admitted us and immediately asked for a credit card. We hadn’t even put down our bags, much less seen our room. Only after we had paid, he told us about the trains that would come by the house all night (we had 7; all blew their horns right outside). And the set-in-stone breakfast time of 9:00. We needed to be on the road earlier, and when we requested an earlier breakfast, you’d have thought we asked for the moon! “Oh my God!” was his first response. We really needed that early time, and though we wanted 7:30 or 8:00, we finally got a grudging 8:30. It wasn’t the food others got, I hope. Lackluster scrambled eggs, sausage, a slice of white toast, and 4 slices of banana. All provided grumpily. The room we booked had fresh varnish and it still smelled. They kindly moved us to another room. Though the property is listed as non-smoking, there was a pronounced odor of stale cigarette smoke throughout the house (I am sensitive to this; it might not bother others). Guests are not given keys, and the outer doors of the house are always locked. If you leave, you have to ring the bell to be readmitted. The only grounded outlet in our room was in the bath. Made it interesting for us both to use our laptops through the evening. Wireless was fine. Others have written about the charming hosts. Maybe if you don’t ask for anything, you’re ok. I can’t recommend this B&B based on our experience.
