Trebor Mansion Inn

  • Inn Details

Trebor Mansion's origins are shrouded in mystery. Built in 1830 and once owned by a United States Senator,it was widely held by the locals to be "haunted", and didn't even have electricity and plumbing in the main structure until 1976. The original artwork, Moses Eaton stencils and stained glass windows were preserved, and it is still crowned by it's original slate roof. The guests have the run of the Inn---a 5000 square foot structure which is private from the owners quarters---with a verandah, a wrap-around porch, and four balconies. Artwork, books and eclectic furnishings can be found in every room. We try to treat our guests to privacy, giving them as much space as they desire. The atmosphere is informal. You may do as you please.

    Innkeeper Information

    Innkeepers Description:

Widely traveled and interested in everything, the Shaffer Family has restored historic homes for 15 years, and they represent 4 Continents in their heritage. As to their background, the timid need not inquire and the bold will not need to be told, but let it suffice to say that various family members have sought high political office, been imprisoned by nefarious foreign governments, met everyone from Catholic Cardinals, Grand Rabbis and Sufi Sheiks to confidants of Adolf Hitler.

    • Directions to property:
Driving Directions to Trebor Mansion Inn: We are on Route 15, "The Moosehead Trail," one block east of the bridge in the center of Guilford on the hill above the Carnegie Library. Look up---it's the big beautiful yellow and purple mansion on the hill (the color scheme is Imperial Rome meets Han China, in case you were wondering...). Our entrance and parking are in the rear. FROM I-95: Go north at Exit #157 at Newport and take Route 7 to Dexter. (This is the route traveled by the alien in Stephen King's latest book, if that'll help any.). Watch out for the left turn in Corinna when Route 7 veers north. At the light in the center of Dexter, continue straight and your next left will be Route 23 North, the Moosehead Trail. Take that left and go about 12 miles, through the village of Sangerville, over the new bridge to the T intersection with Route 15. You have to turn, so turn left, go into Guilford and the Mansion is a block past the Shell Station on your right on the hill above the Library.

For those who aren't interested in being B&B folks, and don't like shoebox hotels, this place is awesome. It is not perfect, but it is interesting. I'll take that anyday over bland. Check out their web page. If it makes you cringe, you're should probably head elsewhere. If it makes you think, hmmm, should we? You should! We took a chance and had no regrets - just wish we had more time there. We didn't stay in the tower room, but we got to check it out - lovely! Actually, we looked at all the rooms - not one I would be disappointed to stay in. The bedding was not regular hotel fare, but it gave me the best sleep I have ever had away from home (a family of 6, we all slept well). Service was no more than we expected. It's clearly laid out on their website they will not be waiting to cater to every whim and fancy, though available if needed - perfect for me. Dining was not provided as we did not ask for it. A little diner an easy walk away fit the bill. We had four young children with us - they are convinced the Trebor Mansion Inn is magical. We all look forward to returning again someday. We stayed 2 nights - one on our way to Canada's east coast from Ontario, one one the way back. A few years earlier we stayed in Bangor, Maine. Trebor Mansion Inn was a much better choice for us. If you cross over to New Brunswick, be sure to check out the train station in McAdam.

    Had the best time ever...

The folks here at Trebor have succeeded in creating a truly original and interesting place to stay - not such an easy feat these days! as so many things become more generic. Guests have the run of the mansion, great privacy, unlike so many other B&Bs. Luxurious sheets and beds, every room unique, come and go as you please, very reasonable prices - we could have paid 4 times as much for equal luxury a few miles away. Antiques and history galore, and a little mystery too, although they assured us the ghost was gone since the fire of 1-24-2004. When we were there, there were guests staying for 10 days, and you can’t afford thta most places these days. A best buy, a wonderful experience.

Hospitality, with history, at its simplest.

Who would've thought, Guilford, ME of all places....what a find. Unpretentious, relaxed and a very historic restoration to discuss and discover with Robert. If you're into, YOYO (You're On Your Own - unless you need something, then no worries either) TMI is for you. The web site is all true to a fault. Balconies & porches to hang out on, a 2+ acre wild yard-scape to explore, a classic "walk to" diner for breakfast, Abbots Bakery up the Rd (OMG) and a meandering river walk along the Piscataquis (we discovered) post breakfast or for a morning run. Highly recommend the Mansion's Tower Room! A great value for the location...only 20+ miles to Moosehead Lake for dinner dining on the water...which we did handily. We're staying longer next time and it doesn't hurt to know, room rates get cheaper the longer you stay.
