I too have stayed at Sur La Mur Inn last year for my husbands and my anniversary. We stayed in the Boathouse with the ocean underneath us at high tide. Beautiful! Yes, the Inn did need some updating and was over crowded with furniture but Gene, the owner, loves his antiques! Shane, who helps run the Inn, took care of that. I have a very keen sense of smell. I have asthma and very sensitive to odor. I did not detect any. We called this year to stay with them to celebrate. I COULD NOT believe the difference. It was so refreshed and uncluttered. I felt like it was a different place. We stayed in the penthouse....highly recommend....your own private floor, Jacuzzi and deck!! Breathtaking views. Romantic!! Breakfast was awesome and plentiful. Served with a smile from either Gene and/or Shane. Don’t be shy, there's plenty. We came back the following week to stay in the Penthouse but we also wanted to go back to their restaurant, Amore's Italian Bistro. It was awesome and I could not believe the size of the serving. In fact, I’m taking a friend there today for lunch! I feel like it's my home away from home!!

My wife and I stayed here last July 4th weekend (we live just down the coast), and found it to be extremely pleasant, albeit somewhat cluttered with antiques, like others have pointed out. We returned this July 4th, this time by boat, and were knocked out by how they had improved it over the winter. Clutter was gone, fresh coats of paint, and spectacular location make this a "must stay" when visiting the coast of Maine. While I personally am not a huge B&B fan (not really into mingling and small talk) I actually had a great time getting to know the owners and meeting some interesting folk from around the country. You really should check them out. The penthouse offers a spectacular view of the Harbor

Incredible view of harbor and ocean. Interior full of interesting antiques and collectibles, keeping the eye busy, but a warm environment. Charming setting and not at all intimidating, felt like I could just relax and enjoy myself without worrying about messing the pillows up. Perfect getaway for those that just want to be left to your own devices, with an occasional conversation with the Innkeepers....great breakfast too.

House smelled like an attic and furnished with what you may find in your attic. host aggressive and rude. left minutes after check in, host informed us we were going to be charged if we didn't stay. Losing my money was a better option than to spend the night there.

    Innkeeper Response
Thank you for your concerns and they have been noted. This year brought many changes to Sur La Mer Inn, including some changes in decor that recent guests have found to be very appealing. Our Boathouse Cottage has undergone a complete renovation with vaulted ceiling and resurfaced walls, similar to that of our Penthouse Suite. Our policies are now clearly posted on our website so that there may no confusion.
