The Gryphon House

The Gryphon House was built in 1895 as a single family home. The interior is dominated by a majestic curved stairway leading from the lobby to the fourth floor. The large hunter green parlor is set off by gilded moldings, mirrors, and faux marble which complements the original golden onyx fireplace. Each suite is keyed to a theme, and offers unique decorative touches, such as stained glass or silk lampshades, original fine art, antiques, or trompe l'oeil painting. All suites have a wet bar, refrigerator, custom built cabinetry with granite countertops, large private bath featuring oversized Kohler tubs and showers, comfortable sitting and work areas complete with direct line phones, free local calls, private voice mail, and wireless internet.

Location

  • Location is best described as:
    • Boston Back Bay
    • Fenway Park
    • Kemore Square
  • Nearest major city: Boston, MA (0 miles)
  • Directions to property:
From either east or west on Storrow Drive (the highway along the Charles River on the Boston side), take the exit for Kenmore Square. As you are exiting, stay to the far right, and at the first traffic light, make the sharpest right turn possible (the wide right is Beacon St.; the sharp right is Bay State Road). Go down just twenty-five yards and you'll be right in front of our door!
  • Nearest major airport: Boston, MA (BOS-Logan Intl.) 4 miles
  • Directions from airport:
Follow the signs to Boston via the Sumner Tunnel ($3.00 toll). Stay to the right and follow the signs to Storrow Drive (exit #26). Follow Storrow Drive West. Just past the exit for Mass. Ave., you'll come to a double exit for Fenway/Kenmore (all exits are on your left; the river is on your right). The sign will say "left lane for exit", but if you stay in the center lane, you will exit smoothly into the Kenmore part of the exit, which is the one that you want. Stay to the right as you exit, because you will make an extremely sharp right at the very first stop light. Stay to the right as if you were going to pull over and park. About 5 car lengths down, you'll see a big tree and a fire hydrant--that's right in front of the Gryphon House!

The fireplace in Riverview, our Arts & Crafts themed room, which has a view of the Charles River. Riverview has a large marble bathroom with glass shower stall and a deep Kohler tub.Suiting its name, Tuscany, on the 2nd floor, offers a warm, inviting ambience. The large marble bathroom has decorated fixtures, a deep tub and a glass enclosed shower.
Morningside always seems to be drenched in sunshine! With an offset sleeping area, and separate closet and dressing area, you'll enjoy the spacious accommodations, even when it rains.Sanctuary offers just that, with a gas log "wood stove", cozy sitting area, and neo-Gothic decorative touches. The unit is on the ground floor, very private, and has a single bed in addition to the queen bed. Sanctuary is our only suite with a full kitchen, as well.
A view of North Tower, looking away from "the view", which is a spectacular one, featuring a large picture window overlooking the Charles River! This photo shows the kitchenette/dining area, the corner fireplace, and looking past the closet "wall", into the bedroom area. The main living area has two comfy chairs by the windows, and a daybed that makes into 2 single beds when needed.A corner of our main parlor with a gryphon posing before a handmade Victorian lampshade.
Here's a detail, above our sideboard, of our unbelievable Zuber wallpaper mural, which wraps most of the first and second floor common areas! The 1848 design is called 'El Dorado' and depicts the flora and fauna of 4 continents. The same design is in the Cooper Hewitt Design Musuem in NYC, and it's been featured in Architectural Digest and Art & Antiques. Here's another detail of Sanctuary, which shows the single bed and the kitchen area.
