    Innkeeper Information

    Innkeepers Description:

Sven is a retired history professor from Sweden. Alexandra is a writer who lived in France for 25 years. They tend a marvelous garden: flowers and veggies! Both Sandy and Sven enjoy nature. They take long walks on the beach whenever time allows and look forward to advising guests on fun things to do/see in the area. At the birth of her grandchild, Sandy became a local activist to prevent the spraying of herbicides on Cape Cod. She is also a member of town Economic Development Committee.

This is our favorite New England inn. It's nestled among the ponds and dirt roads of Wellfleet -- perfect for swimming and bicycling. Two ponds are a few minutes' walk, and a dozen others and a good ocean beach are within easy biking. Town is an easy walk or ride. The hosts are kind and smart-- it's fun to hear about their lives in Europe, to get advice on local restaurants, and to feel free to slip back into one's own private world. The rooms are comfortable, with flowers from an enviably lush garden and touches like organic lavender bath salts. We haven't been lucky enough to get the cabin, but it's the perfect hideaway. We only wish Chez Sven were bigger -- it's often full. Book way ahead, or hope slip into a last minute opening. Great place.

Great spot for retreat. Only disappointment - not located for walking or biking (safely) to town or beaches.

    Innkeeper Response
I'm sorry this guest did not get a chance to visit the secluded beach at Dyer Pond, a ten-minute walk through the woods. Ditto for Long Pond. The ocean is only two miles away. The village center is 8/10ths of a mile. The popular restaurant Wicked Oyster can be reached, on foot, in less than five minutes. Also, we are two blocks from Long Pond Road, which is, in fact, the "extension" of the Cape Cod Rail Trail. It is true that this public road must be shared with cars. We often receive guests who enjoy our proximity to the National Seashore, which offers miles and miles of hiking trails.

I found Chez Sven by doing a search on the web for "B&B, Cape Cod and green." I was interested in staying in accommodations that were modern and green, if they could be found. I was pulled in by the Chez Sven blog which Sandy, the innkeeper, writes about the daily goings-on -- tourism, ecological and community-related -- in beautiful Wellfleet, MA. Once I looked at the photos of the rooms in the main house and the cottage, I was hooked. The Green Room had been recently renovated and was outfitted with sumptuous organic cotton bed linens -- sure to guarantee a sound night of sleep. We booked two nights in the Green Room for our first stay at Chez Sven in November of 2008. Sandy and Sven are both fascinating, kind people who take pride in their chosen lives as innkeepers on Cape Cod. Their lives are filled with both history -- Sven taught history for many years and enriches many a conversation with interesting and spontaneous lessons about Europe, the United States and about his home country of Sweden -- and modern times. Sandy has held many interesting roles in journalism, media and is very 'up' on the topics of the day on Cape Cod and abroad. The home that the two of them open to their guests is really very special; you will not find this kind of hospitality, often found in Europe, in many places in the States. The location of Chez Sven is ideal as you can easily walk to serene ponds as well as to town. I think that the beach is also walking distance. The second time we stayed at Chez Sven, we stayed in Seagull Cottage. This visit was in February 2010 and it was great to have the fireplace and full kitchen. The weather was cold, but we managed to get some nature walks in as well as took in a show at the First Congregational Church featuring local talent The Parkington Sisters who opened for Livingston Taylor. Whether for a long weekend or for a couple of weeks, you can't go wrong at Chez Sven and in Wellfleet.
