McNeill Stone Mansion B&B

– Oskaloosa, IA

We hope you will come and see why we love our warm and cozy castle. As you walk through the door, you’ll be transported back in time to a slower, more elegant era, a time when there was beautiful woodwork throughout the house. The Mexican Tabasco mahogany woodwork dominates the living room and dining room. In the grand hallway, the mahogany is a striking contrast with the soft white paint. The whole library as well as the first and second story floors are a beautiful quarter-sawn oak. The large ornate pier mirror at the landing of the grand staircase reflects the beautiful contrast of the majestic mahogany handrail and the white spindles. From the first floor, the mirror showcases the stained glass located in the second floor ceiling. The stained glass is brightened by the skylight in the third floor. Have breakfast in the elegant dining room or you might enjoy having it served in the inviting, light and airy solarium, where you can also sit back and relax with a beverage or a good book.

The Carriage House Bed & Breakfast

– Grinnell, IA

The Carriage House Bed & Breakfast is a beautiful Queen Anne style Victorian home. In the summer months guests gather on the front porch to lounge in the white wicker furniture or swing on the cushioned porch swing. In winter they play the piano in the front parlor or read by the fire in the central parlor. We serve a gourmet breakfast of fresh fruit, an egg dish such as mushroom quiche, meat (perhaps glazed sausages), and warm breads including Irish Soda Bread fresh from the griddle. Arrington's Journal for 2004 named Carriage House Bed and Breakfast under the heading of"Best in the Midwest".

The Woodland B&B LLCMarshalltown, IA

"Solitude, nature and every comfort!"

"This is so much more than a simple bed and breakfast. Starting with the lovingly decorated suite of rooms and ending with what seems like an entire state park right at your door. On our too short, 3-day weekend there really was no reason to even leave. Room-service breakfasts were tasty and so abundant there was no need for lunch. (And the wonderful, homemade cookies filled in the gap before dinner.) We had a great dinner in our suite the night of our arrival and the second night went to the famous Rubes Steakhouse. (Which is almost reason enough to visit Marshalltown. What fun!) Days started with lazy breakfasts, tea, birdwatching, then long hikes through the meadows and woods, over the cricks and down to the Iowa River on the well maintained trails, a soak in the hot tub, out for dinner and then back "home" to play cards or simply talk before falling into the comfy bed. The B & B seems to have many amenities, many of which we didn't have time to take advantage of. We loved all the books (birds and trees) to answer all our questions about what we'd seen out in the woods that day. The kitchenette was great. We could make a cup of tea (or coffee, as you wish) whenever you like and keep a bottle of wine in the refrigerator. This seemed more like a cozy cabin in the woods with room service than a B & B to me. Janey and Tom were warm, wonderful hosts, able to answer all our questions, but never invasive. They certainly have a place worth returning to."
