Since 1982, Penury Hall (the first B & B on Mt. Desert Island ) an historic property built in 1830 in Southwest Harbor, has welcomed many through its distinctive red front door. We enjoy sharing our love of fine arts, antiques, gardening, books and sailing with our six guests. Private baths of course and breakfast ranges from Eggs Benedict, Cinnamon Waffles, Penurious Omelet to Blueberry Pancakes and beyond, a different one served every day. Located on the " Quiet Side " of Mt. Desert Island, we are less than a half-mile from many of the attractions of Acadia National Park. Hiking, biking, whale watching or just lolling on a rock by the ocean are a few of the many pleasures that await you. A grand selection of dining places, whether it be gourmet or lobster-on-the-pier, await your discovery. We look forward to adding you to our extended family. And... you don't have to do the dishes.

    Great stay at Penury Hall

    October 17, 2012

We immediately felt right at home at this charming B&B. Gretchen Strong has been welcoming guests into her home for 30 years, and makes sure they are comfortable with her gracious hospitality. The rooms are clean and well appointed, bathrooms are spotless, and towels are replaced with clean, dry ones more than once a day! Breakfasts are substantial and delicious, and Gretchen has her own breakfast with guests and provides interesting and stimulating conversation. She also leaves homemade snacks out during the day and evening. Guests are encouraged to make use of the whole house. The atmosphere is very relaxed and we felt as though we were staying with friends. Gretchen has an encyclopedic knowledge of the area and was helpful with suggestions for where to eat and what to do, but did not intrude on our privacy in any way. The house is a minute's walk to town (Southwest Harbor), charming quiet town but with many amenities. We would definitely stay at Penury Hall again and recommend it highly.

A Lovely Time at Penury Hall with Gretchen

    August 21, 2012

Penury Hall is well run by Gretchen Strong, who is a great hostess and cook! If you want to stay in a real home rather than a hotel or even an outsourced B&B, this is the place. Penury Hall is in a wonderful location and is a quite alternative to nearby tourist-ridden Bar Harbor. Gretchen shares so much knowledge of the area and she helped make our vacation a lot of fun. Shopping, galleries, great restaurants, a bank, grocery store and drug store are just down the street. This is a good location for visiting Bar Harbor, Northwest Harbor, Echo Lake, the Cranberry Isles, or any place in Acadia National Park. We would certainly stay at Penury Hall again.
