We've stayed in renovated historic inns before. This one was just a tad too small for a 3 night stay. Only one chair if we both wanted to sit. No place other than bed to place suitcases. Had private bathroom down the hall which was fine. Breakfast could have had more protein variety like cold hard boiled eggs. It was close to the bus stop which was a plus to get downtown without having to drive. But location was pricey for being so far away from the wharfs/docks. Very clean and well kept. Upon request staff provided ice at front desk.

The staff is helpful and kind! It is a truly beautiful stay! It was comfortable to rest, air conditioning, and a marvelously maintained Victorian establishment.

Finding myself in a leg cast a week before our trip, we called the Inn at St. John to make sure it was wheelchair accessible. We were told it was. At check in, as I looked at the staircase going up to our room, I asked the front desk clerk, "Miles", why we were told the building was wheelchair accessible? Instead of an explanation or apology, this lawyer-wannabe told me they "were grandfathered in from compliance." I pointed out that ADA was not optional and that he did not answer my question as to why we had been lied to. He was totally indifferent and gave us a perfunctory apology. As I struggled to work my way up the stairs, "Miles" just sat there and watched me. I felt embarrassed and humiliated as I inched my way up the stairs. I suppose "Miles" believed the Inn at St. John was also grandfathered from offering assistance to injured guests to minimize liability risk. Once in our room we found it quaint but were put off by the bathrobes provided, which had drops of tomato sauce on them...SERIOUSLY...yuck! Needless to say, we opted to forgo the bathrobes since they obviously were not fresh from the laundry. I suppose "Miles" advised housekeeping that the Inn at St. John was grandfathered from good sanitary practices as well. The so-called Continental Breakfast was simply pathetic. A stay at a B&B is expected to be a warm and personal experience. Other B&B's we have stayed at boast homemade gourmet baked goods, made-to-order omelets, or souffles. Needless to say, Supermarket packaged danish, cereal, and yogurt make for a rather shabby and impersonal offering. Perhaps this was more risk mitigation from "Miles".Finally, the building was in a very bad part of town. In fact the stores in the area only accepted cash or EBT cards. Whoa! So...We did not venture out at night...and we are from New York! So, unless you want to roll with your homies in the hood, don't mind snotty staff, are not a breakfast person, and find bathrobes with questionable hygene an adventure, avoid The Inn at St. John at all cost.

Nice hotel, 20 minutes walk from main streets, did not like having the bathroom outside our room but friendly staff.

I loved the folks who worked at the inn during my stay! Front desk was attentive and friendly, housekeeping and grounds staff were friendly and went out of their way to answer questions and coach us out of a very tight parking space. There are so many things that are advertized as having more value then they are worth that you walk away feeling chumpped. Not this inn they say this is what we do and this is what you pay and that is so fantastic! I will absolutely stay there again. Susan Murphy St. George, Maine

Our room was at the top--three flights up. Of course, we brought all our stuff: computer, food for the fridge, suitcases. We arrived quite late (long after the bell-staff had left. The gentleman at the desk helped us get our stuff upstairs and let us leave our cooler on the lower level. The last night we were there, our daughter arrived and we had to complete a big project involving computers and printers. Again, the staff was supportive, helpful, and interested in our work. What a great location--even the restaurant (not connected to or part of the Inn) a few doors down is wonderful. Parking too was close and convenient.

This was our fist ever stay at a Bed and Breakfast. It was great. We were on a budget and the price of the cheapest room here was comparable with a stay at a low cost Super 8 style hotel in the burbs. When we checked in we were upgraded from a room with a bathroom across the hall to a room with a bathroom attached. We stayed in a corner room that was smaller than most hotel rooms, but it was still spacious. The bathroom was oddly spacious, but the space could have been better used. There was only a shower stall, no tub, although there was more than enough room for it (but I'm not complaining, we didn't have to go across the hall) Breakfast was decent, standard continental. Parking was weird. The Inn has a lot, but it is not big enough. When we returned from a night out, it was full, so I parked on the street (signs indicated it was ok as long as it wasn't street cleaning day, which it wasn't) When we got back into the Inn I mentioned it to the gent at the front desk and he told me we had to move our car to overflow parking at the Chinese restaurant next door or it would be towed. This was much more difficult than it sounds. The Inn is on a one way street, and a block away from the baseball stadium. It took me over 20 minutes to move the car because a baseball game had just let out. I had chosen the Inn because we wanted to be in an urban, walkable area. There isn't much to walk to, but it would have been the perfect local to bike from (had we brought our bikes). Most of the things we wanted to do were like 2 or 3 miles away. I would stay here again, but next time I will be sure to bring my bike.

We enjoyed an overnight stay in Portland - the Inn at St. John was an excellent choice. The inn is beautifully kept and the cleanliness puts hotel chains to shame. Everywhere were thoughtful touches for a visitor, including homemade chocolate chip cookies upon our arrival! The staff are so welcoming and they know their city - they gave us great recommendations for spots to visit in the revitalized downtown. Will stay again the next time we are in Portland.

We enjoyed our stay at the Inn at St. John's. The desk staff were friendly and helpful, the continental breakfast was fine, room was big and comfortable. A few minor negatives that didn't bother me much but might be issues for some guests: there's no elevator and the stairs are steep (it's an old building, so this is part of the charm, but something to be aware of); we did have a private bathroom but it was tiny. Finally, location: the inn is very close to Hadlock Field, so you're in great shape if you want to see a Seadogs game; but you'll need to drive to just about any other place you'll want to go in Portland. It's a decent neighborhood with a few restaurants in walking distance, but it's well over a mile from the more vibrant part of the city. Good deal overall, though, and a nice, unique inn.
