Amazing, warm experience...

What a quaint hotel, so much character. The staff was extremely helpful and attentive and our rooms were great. The only downside was that their was not much room to accommodate guests at breakfast, nowhere to sit. We definitely would stay there again!

my home away from home

4.2 on October 23, 2014

I've been staying at the Inn at St John for several years and I've found it to be the best combination of location/price in Portland. This is the oldest hotel in Portland and in many ways is a step back in time. The rooms are very clean, well furnished and comfortable. The hotel is "intown" but not "downtown" although downtown is only a short cab ride or a twenty minute walk away. There are several restaurants nearby including Dogfish Café, Pizza Villa (they have a bar), Amato's Italian, D'Angelo's Sandwich and a very nice Thai restaurant. There is also a Dunkin Donuts, Denny's and McDonald's within walking distance. The hotel offers a no charge breakfast consisting of bagels, juices, coffee, cereal, muffins, etc. The Inn at St John's reservation system differs from other hotels and resembles a B & B in that you reserve a specific room. Some rooms have an en suite bath, some have a private bath outside the room and the rest have a shared bath. I hesitated about the shared bath arrangement at first but it really isn't an issue. How much time do you really spend in a bathroom...especially when you are in a hotel? The staff at Inn at St John is friendly, courteous and very accommodating without being intrusive. On my last arrival my room wasn't quite ready but the desk clerk gave me my key and had my bag sent to my room while I went to lunch. When I checked out they held my bag until it was time for me to go to the Amtrak station and he called a cab for me. The only caveat anyone should be aware of is that this hotel has four floors and no elevator. If you don't mind stairs it's not an issue and by the way the hotel books up it looks like most people don't mind. The staff is more than happy to carry your bags to your room. If you're looking for an intown Portland hotel with an historic atmosphere that won't break your budget the Inn at St John is for you. I wish I'd discovered it earlier.

A Pleasant Surprise

3.8 on October 22, 2014

When booking the Inn online, we really weren't certain about the location of the Inn in regards to where we wanted to be in Portland. It turned out to be the perfect location for us which was a pleasant surprise. The Inn was very easy to get to from RT 302. Parking was a real plus since parking in Portland can be challenging. The Inn itself has so much character! We loved it! It is not your typical hotel layout as there are lots of crooks and crannies. Our room had a bathroom which was very small but served its purpose. The rest of the room was very comfortable. We never really heard our neighbors so it was quiet in that respect. In the lobby you were welcome to snacks and drinks any time of the day. Yummy cookies! We were able to walk to the stores and restaurants in Portland we wanted to go to. Mid-October rates were doable. We will definitely return to the Inn.

Very quaint historic B&B. Parking can be a little tricky as there are not enough spaces but the over flow lot is right next door. The room was very clean and spacious. Street noise can be heard as can the sirens from the ambulances because the hospital is across the street. Overall a very pleasant stay.

This was a typical B and B with average fare for the breakfast. The staff was exceedingly helpful as I arrived quite late and the goal was to get our party settled, not quibble about forms, signatures, ID, etc. I had a gift certificate which was processed the next day, not upon arrival, so our sleep time was spared. The room was quiet and comfortable. The bath was spacious and furnished with all necessities.

Great value for a B & B during the beautiful fall in the Northeast!

Stayed here for a local marathon and the service and room exceeded my expectations. I was able to shower and clean up even after I checked out of my room - very friendly and accommodating staff!

The Inn at St John is a wonderful place to stay. The staff is super friendly and the rooms are very nice. The breakfast bar is done up nicely and the location is not far away from any attraction.

will go back!

Relaxing place with a lot of character. Staff were very helpful. Great variety at breakfast considering it was a weekday in a slower season. Portland has much more to see than I'd realized so will definitely return here.

A delightful place to stay in Portland, Maine!

This is my second stay at this Victorian B&B in Portland, Maine, The rooms are well decorated and equipped with everything you could need! The service is great...the stairs are steep but the staff is more than welcome to help you with your bags, etc. There are free snacks and drinks available in the lobby and a continental breakfast in the morning, which I would rate as fair...I will definitely go back :) KB

Great Place to Stay
