Our second time in this hotel. Personable staff in a historic site. A good value with a continental breakfast.

This is a charming Inn that will remind you of European travels. Each room is uniquely furnished and comfortable, though small perhaps. The afternoon cookies and free continental breakfast add to the hospitality, and the location is very convenient.

Our stay was everything we were looking for - a place with New England charm, a super clean room, friendly and helpful staff AND at a great value! If ever in the area again, we would definitely come back.

The Inn is a nice place to stay with friendly employees and very convenient parking. The bath was mostly clean minus a few hairs in the tub :( Bed and pillow were comfortable. Breakfast was basic as expected.

I have never been to a b&b before, if they are all like this it is the only way to go. The staff were friendly and professional. They were quick with suggestions for different activities in the area including where to get wine within walking distance. The rooms were well appointed and comfortable. We stayed in 2 rooms. The 3rd floor had beautiful 8ft ceilings and wonderful Victorian charm. The first floor room had a great brick wall, and jetted tub. I would recommend this hotel to everyone I know. The only bad things to say: no elevator and the 3rd floor room toilet had no room to sit on it. We stayed in rooms with private bathrooms, there are some without that. Those facts makes this hotel the best value in town, hands down.

I was so thrilled with my visit at the Inn at St. John. We were in town for a conference and even though it was held at the Holiday Inn by the Bay, it was still walkable. The service was wonderful and the rooms were clean. I love how adorable the place is and not as stuffy and monotone as many hotel chains.

Overall, our stay at the Inn was great. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and room was good size. The bathroom was down the hall which was a bit odd, but it didn't bother us. Conveniently located about 5-10 minutes away from old port ($10 uber). It reminded us of being in a murser-mystery setting which was kind of cool. Would stay here again.

Great place, good value. Friendly staff. It would be nice to see them partner with a local bakery for some better breakfast choices for a higher quality muffin or croissant. We skipped the breakfast because it looked like your standard chain hotel continental with frozen muffins, etc. But They have cookies and bottled water and tea in the lobby all the time which was very nice.

This inn never disappoints - the staff is friendly and the rooms are great. We go to Portland a couple times of year and find this a great value. Normally we'd walk up the hill to downtown Portland but with some dicey weather, we were able to grab the bus right outside the hotel. The stairs are steep so best to stay at a ground floor room if you have climbing issues.

Look, let's be up front: this hotel is not going to be for everyone. It's advertised as "European Style". What that means is: This is an old property. The rooms are tiny. The bathroom is a separate room, across the hall. There is no elevator and there are many weird stairs. But this is an utterly charming place that has character. In a world full of cookie-cutter hotels of different brand-names that are mostly indistinguishable from each other, this place is great! As a long-time hospitality worker, I appreciate that they take pride in their hotel and are not trying to make into the same hotel experience you can get in one of the brand name places. It gives this place a quirky sense of identity and it's something you really don't see often. Not often enough. While the rooms are small, it's clear they are nice. My $89/night twin bed room barely had enough room for me to move around in and a shared bathroom across the hall..but there was a sink and mirror in the room, a TV, a mini-fridge, a microwave. Even a chandelier! I could live here and be fairly comfortable. They try to compensate for what their property cannot offer by offering great amenities. Free bottled water in the lobby/breakfast area. Fresh baked cookies. A bathrobe to use in each room for when you have to go out into the hall to use the bathroom/shower. On top of that, it's right by the Portland Transportation Center and directly by a bus stop that takes you through downtown Portland. (But then, the city's so small, it's not a long walk.) I will definitely stay there again when I come back to Portland. That said, be forewarned that it doesn't have these things and go in with realistic expectations of what that means and I think you'll really enjoy your stay.
