Affordable lodging near downtown Portland

3.8 on August 20, 2014

We enjoyed our stay at the Inn at St. John. We especially loved that they are a dog-friendly hotel so we could travel with our dog. The hotel is not in the main downtown area of Portland, but it's a short drive and you can't beat the price!

First trip to Portland, ME

3.4 on August 18, 2014

Very nice older hotel but the area is not convenient to either the Arts District or the Old Port district. One could walk to the Arts District but the area didn't seem that safe (lots of homeless asking for hand-outs). Also, please be award when booking a top room that the stairs are STEEP.

One Night Stay in Portland

4.0 on August 17, 2014

We had a very nice room with a comfy bed, chairs to sit in, and a TV. A refrigerator was a plus, since we were traveling and had some items that did better out of the cooler. The men at the desk were welcoming and accommodating. Two lights were out in the bathroom, but the one that worked was perfectly good and provided plenty of light. Water, iced tea, and cookies were available on the first floor. Breakfast included several choices of items. We weren't aware that there was yogurt until after awhile when we saw someone with it. Perhaps some direction would help. Best of all, the Inn had personality and was a nice change from the standard motel. Due to the cost, however, we wouldn't use it as a one night stopover again. It would be delightful if one were staying in Portland.

Basic room but good value and very good service

Old style accommodation, but what you see online is what you get in reality. Good location. Good value.

Nice Hotel, not so nicely located

3.2 on August 17, 2014

The room was cosy. The surroundings were not so nice and we felt uncomfortable as travellers to go out in the evening. Breakfast was excellent although there was not much space to eat for all guests. All in all it seemed a bit expensive to what we got for the price.

European-style, great value!

Excellent location, small, efficient but charming room. Clean and tidy. All I could ask for in a cold breakfast. Day-round snacks and beverages. My second visit and far from last.

Our Stay at Inn at St. Johns

4.4 on August 16, 2014

Our stay was lovely. The room was cozy, but well furnished and clean. We did a double bed with the shared hall bathroom. I thought it might be uncomfortable but it was better than expected. It was convenient having a sink in the room. The breakfast was nice as well. Bottled water, yogurt, coffee, hot water was available at all hours of the day. It was a little far from the sightseeing area, but if you take the bus in, it was very doable.

Enjoyed the room

3.0 on August 15, 2014

We enjoyed our room, very clean and comfortable. Breakfast area was very small so had to bring it to our room which was ok. Enjoyed our stay.

Good value!

3.4 on August 15, 2014

Good value for walking distance of Portland area. Room was fine and separate bathroom wasn't an issue. Breakfast could be more substantial - all carbs.

Old-style hospitality and charm

4.6 on August 13, 2014

Victorian, antique furniture, the best of old-school. And convenient to the airport if you have an early morning flight. Breakfast is humdrum, but there are cookies and drinks available at all hours, and the hosts couldn't be nicer. Next door is a good bistro, Dogfish Cafe, and there's a decent pizza-pub across the street. Short (20 minute) walk to the Old Port. Great place. I've stayed here many times.
