Inn at St John

My name is Justis Danto-Clancy. The Inn at St. John was recommended to me by a friend who travels for a living. She had stayed there in the fall. We arrived late in the evening one night and were greeted as if we were the first customers to walk through the door all day. The staff were friendly and helpful. Even later, when we were jonesing for Thai food, they looked into it for us and had a recommendation ready by the time we got down to the desk. The room itself was ridiculously large, with big windows overlooking Congress Street. The neighborhood provided a nice setting for a walk, later in the evening and everything we needed in the morning. From convenience stores to supermarket to art galleries. Not only have I no complaints about my stay at the Inn, but I'd consider returning any time. I was just passing through Portland this time around, but I'd consider staying longer based on my time last week. Thanks! Justis Danto-Clancy

The Inn at St John is a great value find, without compromising quality. spacious, well-appointed rooms and a continental breakfast. In a great location for anyone needing accomodations near Maine Medical Center. The front desk staff was very accomodating and helpful. Smooth and easy check in process.

I have never written a review for anything before, but this Inn exceeded my expectations in so many ways and I wanted to share it with others. The room I stayed in was huge and very clean, the beds were so comfortable that I slept for the first time in 3 nights. The staff was very nice and the complementary breakfast was one of the best I have ever had. Best of all, they allow pets, for the first time I got to enjoy a vacation with my 2 dogs and boyfriend. Also, you cannot bet the price! Thanks again for making my stay so great!

This B&B has dramatic price decreases during the off-season. Our room, Luxury Room 108, would go for more than $220 during the season but we were able to get it for less than $90 this time of year! I booked online and rec'd reservation materials through an email. The room had a king-sized bed, flat screen tv, jacuzzi tub, exposed brick walls, fridge, coffee maker, and was only 2 steps from the lobby. A continental bkft is included with the stay - the amount of food was perfect for me. They have cereal, yogurt, juice, croissants, and fruit. There are cookies that are out all time of day and there is also tea/coffee/hot water. Parking is free - there is a lot just behind the B&B. The staff is very friendly.

Excellent place to stay while in Portland. Stayed in the room without windows (can't remember #) on the first floor. The room and bathroom were extremely clean and spacious. Great amenities and location. Short drive into downtown. Friendly staff. Recommending to all our friends.

My wife and I went up to Portland to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary and found this place online. The value was excellent and we were genuinely surprised with how nice the room was considering what we had paid, it was really lovely. We chose the inn because they allow pets, because we wanted to bring our two dogs with us, and for the same price in the winter as a motel 6, we were very glad that we chose this place instead! It felt very fancy and cozy, and reminded me of an old English bed and breakfast. It had a lot more personality than a lot of places we have stayed at. If you have a chance, you should stay here. Its a gem.

Great place as well as location. Staff friendly & helpful.

The bedroom was spacious and nicely decorated. Good selection at breakfast, although the food was not out of this world. Generally, I would say that the inn is pleasant and a good value. You will not leave feeling pampered, however.

Unbelievable value, clean and cute rooms. A nice change from the major chain hotels! The linens are especially comfy.

I stayed here to go out to the old port and have a good time with some old friends. It was close enough to walk to where I was going and had a great value. I will defiantly stay here in the future.

I loved this Inn. Friends recommended it and I see why. Unlike so many places I've stayed, the Inn has charm to spare and very pleasant helpful people working. It snowed overnight and in the morning there were men in the parking lot cleaning off all the cars! Next time I'm in Portland, I will definitely stay at the Inn.

My husband and I recently traveled to Portland to take our 4 yr. old to a doctor's appt. at MMC. This was our first stay at the Inn at St. John and we absolutely loved it. The charm and character met you from the moment you walked in the door. I loved that it had the ambience of a bed & breakfast, but with hotel amenities (i.e. cable TV, fridge & coffee maker in the room, general continental breakfast, etc.). The room was very comfortable and meticulously cared for right down to the fanned tissues :) Because we are people who like to be independent on our travels, it was nice that we did not have to eat with everyone as in a typical B&B or could choose an en-suite lavatory for little to no extra charge and not have to share. Also, downtown Portland was just out the front door offering many restaurants and shops to explore. Plus, the waterfront was only a couple of blocks away. The whole experience was fantastic and far exceeded our expectations, especially considering the budget-friendly cost of the room. I suppose there's usually always one drawback...the following would be ours. We visited in January, but we prefer a cooler room to sleep in. Apparently, the only A/C they use are window units which are not installed in the winter and our room was too warm for our liking with no way to fix it. (We had the heat turned off). But, that aside, I would absolutely recommend this Inn for anyone who is staying in the Portland area. We will absolutely being staying there when we are in the area again.

My sister and I stayed for one night at the Inn at St. John, and it was great! Wonderful service, friendly staff and a GREAT room!

I stayed at the Inn at St. John on a recent visit to Portland with my family. I found the staff to be welcoming, friendly, and very helpful. The room was very well appointed with an iron and ironing board, bath robes, and free WiFi access. The private bath was immaculate. I even took pictures of the pleated tissues! After a night in a comfortable bed, we enjoyed a lovely continental breakfast downstairs before heading out for our day. I will definitely be visiting the inn in the future.

My boyfriend and I make it a point to stay at this bed and breakfast whenever we visit Portland because not only is it adorable, but the rooms are always clean, and its so affordable in the off season!! Being only a mile and a half from the old port, we like to walk there for dinner and a night out, then we can take a cheap and quick cab ride back at night. While it isn't in the most beautiful part of Portland, it is so convenient we don't even notice the Greyhound station across the street. This past time we visited, the room we were in was tiny, but other times we've been in gigantic rooms, so I guess it's all just the luck of the draw when it comes to room size. We really enjoy that they had a book of menus for local eateries in the rooms to peruse when you arrive. The staff is always friendly and helpful as well.

It was as good as always. Dont change a thing. We put' met our expectations' bacause we always have high expectations from previous visits. Our first visit exceeded our expectations and has been at that standard ever since so now you continue to meet our expectations Bill and Jeanne....and thank you!

My boyfriend and I stayed here for NYE weekend. For just about $300 we stayed 3 nights one of them being NYE. Looking at other hotels in the area you couldn't even get one night at that price! This place was in a great location for us with some bars and restaurants within a 2 minute walk. I will definitely stay here again but probably on a first floor room next time because walking up and down the stairs got a little tough!

Overall a wonderful stay, however, I had read in other's reviews that their room was right on the street level and was loud. This was also my experience. I was in room 101 right across from the lobby. On the opposite side of my wall was the breakfast nook where people came to eat in the morning. There was a microwave set up (in this nook)) that was a bit annoying. Also, being right at street level and with the high ceilings in the room, it was very noisy! I would stay here again because everything else was wonderful but I would make sure I was not in this particular room.

This place rocks!!! We brought our puppy and couldn't have been happier with the cleanliness, location, and overall service. The inn is run by such friendly and helpful people. We will definitely be staying here on any future visits to Portland!

We went to Portland to welcome in the New year. Staying at the Inn at St John was a great experience. The staff was very friendly, the rooms were tastefully decorated, clean and had extra details you don't find in every other hotel. Breakfast was well-stocked with bagels, muffins, fruit, yogurt, cereal, juices, coffee and teas. Cookies, coffee and tea were available thru the evening. We are already planning our next visit!

Upon entering our room at the Inn we realized what a gem we landed on. Everything was super clean, cozy, comfy, and even bathrobes provided! The service was friendly and efficient. The location is great. We had a room toward the back so it was quiet as well. Overall, a great unexpected stay. Wish we could have stayed another night!

This was a great find, right in the center of Portland. A short walk (just under a mile) gets you into the heart of Portland's downtown and a few blocks more drops you into the Old Port section. The service was impeccable and the value was outstanding (we had a free upgrade upon arrival). There was a common sitting area with PC for guest use and a little dining area with cookies & beverages during the day and a continental style breakfast in the AM. The breakfast selection included cereal, muffins, bagels, toast, fresh fruits, yogurt & a few other items. Overall this is a great value and we will visit again.

I booked one night at the Inn at St John on line - not knowing what to expect when I got there. The room I had was very nice - old world charm and decorated well. What really stood out was the staff - they were very friendly and helpful - felt that helping me was not a duty to them but was just what they did. The hot tea and cookies in the afternoon was a welcome extra too!! Thanks for a great stay.

The Inn at St. John was an incredible surprise and welcoming experience. From the time I set foot into the lobby, I was amazed at the beauty, warmth and hospitality that greeted me. So much of an old European flavor prevailed among the l flat screen television and available internet and business supports. The continental breakfast exceeded my expectations, the staff were exceptional in their service. I never expected such a lovely experience for a reasonable cost.

A beautiful inn with unique rooms. This is our second time staying at the Inn, and it was equally nice the second time around. The rates are reasonable and the quality is amazing. This is our new favorite hotel to stay in the Portland area.

This little gem is the best kept secret in New England. Outstanding staff and attention to every detail made my short stay perfect. It will always be my list when returning to town

After hearing from several friends that we should stay at the St. John when headed to Portland for a weekend, I went ahead and made reservations. What a sweet little spot tucked away in such a fun city! The rooms were amazing, staff friendly, helpful, and patient with our late night coming and going... And a really great deal on rooms if you don't mind having a bathroom across the hall. The continental breakfast could have been a bit better, but for the price of the room, I'm not complaining. Already planning my next chance to getaway and stay at the st. john!

Great location. Room faced the street and was a little noisy,and the water in the shower had uncontrollable heat blasts, but other than that, very happy with the place.

The Inn at St. John exceeded my expectation. It was very clean, very warm and very welcoming. The staff was pleasant and check in was a breeze. I had a room in the front of the building and could hear some bus traffic but it did not disturb my sleep. Overall I feel this was an excellent value for the price and would stay there again.

The Inn at St. John is a lovely place with really friendly and gracious staff. The location is just a little further outside of the Old Port where most tourists will spend a lot of time however it's a short trip there (roughly 1.5 miles), or anywhere else in Portland, as it's not a big city. The rooms are nicely appointed, especially for the price, and it is very quiet and comfortable.

Stayed here for two nights. Close to the airport. A bit away from the center of town so you'll have to walk, but it's great to get exercise after all of the yummy food Portland has to offer. Service was awesome and very friendly. The room was immaculate and the bed was comfy. We stayed in a king suite with a private bath. We'd definitely stay again.

5-Star experience at a 3-Star price. We stayed in one of the queen rooms on the first floor. It was beautifully clean and quiet. The staff is very friendly and takes pride in their place. The breakfast is continental and serve yourself. Parking is easy and location is near the freeways and turnpike. I would recommend this hotel.

Location is a little way off from the city centre, but great rooms, cute lovely place, very friendly staff.

We had made reservations for 3 nights. The room we had reserved had a very hard bed, so we asked if we could get a different room for the second night and were quickly accomodated. We have stayed at the Inn many times and will continue to choose it because it is like our home away from home!

I found the Inn at St John on the internet and thought perhaps it was too good to be true. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was just as cozy and delightful as it appeared online. I would definitely recommend the Inn at St John!

What a nice place to stay in portland, spacious room with nice bathroom and refridgerator iin room. A great value. With on site parking it is not far to walk to portland attractions.

I wasn't sure what to expect because it was so reasonably priced. I was very pleasantly surprised. It is a delightful spot. Old-world charm and impeccable service. We are already planning on staying there on our next trip to Portland.

Cannot say anything about dining as we did not try to eat there however the place is a gem in the rough . neighborhood looked rather iffy at first as we pulled in after dark however turned out to be a great stay. I thank you Bruce A. Masters

Our stay at Inn at St John was a most pleasant surprise. Inn is charming and the staff is genuinely good natured. While our room was an odd shape and felt a bit cramped, a charming sitting alcove gave a feel of more space. The continental breakfast was adequate for our needs to begin the day afresh. You can't beat the price as this inn is far more charming with a better breakfast than what is consider cheap motels. We will be back again.

This place should be given credit for creating the concept "hidden gem". The rooms are cozy, clean, and just plain awesome. The vibe is welcoming. The experience for the price is unlike anything I've found anywhere in the country. We kind of want to stop telling people about this place so I can keep it all to ourselves!

A 200-year-old Victorian Inn, charming room, super-clean, with free Wifi, fridge, microwave and a nice breakfast spread, all for 51 bucks??? Who couldn't love that? We will definitely be back to the Inn at St. John!

The Inn at St. John is Portland's best value for overnight lodging, and I recommend it to all visitors. I live about an hour north of Portland, and the Inn at St. John is always my first choice if I need to stay in the city overnight. The staff are friendly and helpful, the rooms are charming and clean, and the beds are extremely comfortable. It's convenient to all of downtown Portland, and a fantastic value.

In at St Johns was a very good and nice hotel which I could recommend iso several hotel chains where I've stayed in over the last couple of weeks. A very good and nice welcome, nice and clean rooms and certainly value for money!

Inn at St John was a wonderful value. It was close to some wonderful restaurants and had convenient parking yet the stay was inexpensive. The rooms were clean, comfortable and had plenty of towels! And the employees were helpful and enthusiastic. Overall, it is a great place to stay and is an absolutely amazing deal!

I love this place because the help is just wonderful. The room all have flat screens now. Tall men may find the bathrooms VERY SMALL. Very much the UK B&B, but with a do-it yourself breakfast that's nice.

The rooms were great for the price. We had a private bathroom in our room, which was worth the extra money. Everyone at the front desk was very friendly and willing to help with finding our way around. It was a short drive to Old Port and the parking at the hotel was very convenient.

Me and my fiance were very impressed with your inn. I work at a hotel and i guess I hold other hotels to a high standard, based on what I expect from my own hotel. You exceeded all of my expectations. We usually stay closer to Higgins Beach, but we were attending a concert at the State Theater and found your inn not too far away. We both decided this is where we will stay when we make our 2 or 3 summer trips to Maine. Thanks for the great service!

My husband and I recently spent 4 nights at the Inn at St. John. The staff were helpful and courteous. Location was easy to get to from the interstate. It is about a 1.5 mile walk to downtown. We are big walkers and prefer to walk as to drive. Lots of restaurants close by. Deering Park is beautiful with a fabulous Farmers Market on Saturdays. And you can't beat the price. We were there over a festival weekend (Harvest on the Harbor) and the prices were amazing. We would totally recommend this to our firends.

We got the room that had a separate bathroom. I thought that we were sharing it with other people on the floor - kind of like a dormitory. Turns out that the bathroom was still just for our use, it was only not located inside our room - so that was a pleasant surprise! It was very clean and well maintained. Towels replaced everyday. Great value for your money!

The Inn is about a 15 minutes walk from the town centre, bus service is right in front of it. I had a beautiful single room with shared bathroom. I had nothing to complain about, the room and service exceeded my expectations! Thank you!

The room and service were very pleasant. The only thing I lacked was a mini refrigerator which I've had on previous visits.

This B&B was just what it should be. Charming, beautiful, and easy to locate. Right along the water front in the old port of Portland gives the experiance that you are a part of the history. We stayed in a large clean bed room with our own bath, and it was very clean, cute, and comfortable. We did stay on the top floor also, and had stairs to climb. But I just loved the structure of the building, and was charmed by its uniqueness.

Very clean room, convenient location, small market next door, restaurants within walking distance. Great maid service, plenty of extra towels. Our room had a microwave and fridge, just as requested. Cable TV. Breakfast was good--they kept re-stocking items as they ran low.

I read a lot of reviews either saying that this place is fantastic or that it's awful. We found it to be perfectly reasonable, and definitely worth the money. The inn was quite comfortable. The folks at the desk were nice. The neighborhood is fine - didn't feel unsafe at all. It was not exactly a vacation type of neighborhood, but it was still walking distance to the fun parts of town. All in all, if you're looking for a comfortable and safe place to stay for less, the Inn is a fantastic choice. We would go back again.

I stayed at the Inn at St. John for 3 nights. My room was beautiful, clean and comfortable. I felt like I was staying in a 5 Star hotel on a 3 star budget. I will definitely stay here again when I return to Portland. Highly recommend.

This place is by far the best value for a hotel in downtown Portland. It's in a neat old building - very tastefully decorated and a maze-like interior. The room I stayed in was large and comfortable. And I can't complain about the price! You can get a lower price just because you pick a room with a bathroom across the hall. The breakfast was decent but nothing special, and all of the employees I interacted with were friendly and helpful.

Everyone was very hospitable and the food was actually really delicious.

The Inn is actually quite nice and the staff is exceedingly pleasant. They were very friendly with our puppy too! The place has a bit of an old school vibe (I had to register on a paper card!) but accommodations are comfortable and it's a deal for being in Portland. The overflow parking at the Chinese restaurant is odd and a tiny bit annoying (you have to drive around the block even though the lot is adjacent to the hotel), but still very safe. Also, the surrounding neighborhood is quiet and residential--so plan on driving into town for touristy things and dining.

This was one of the BEST bed&breakfasts I've been to. I loved the brick wall and the jetted tub. It is set in the perfect location and I had a wonderful stay.

I spent the night at the Inn at St. John in mid October 2011 and was glad I was able to bring my two small dogs with me. The hotel staff was extremely helpful - letting me check in early so I could drop off my dogs and make it to a tennis tournament that started before normal check-in hours. They even gave my dogs cookies and helped carry all my bags upstairs. Free parking and free wi-fi was great, the room wasn't huge but was all that I needed, and the bathroom was just across the hall. It's an older building but has a lot of charm. There's no elevator so if you can't handle a few flights of stairs, you should probably ask for a room on the ground level. The hotel is right off the highway and is a 5 minute drive from the center of Portland (Old Port), so overall I liked the location.

We chose the Inn at St John because it was opposite the Greyhound station, but we loved the feel of this 100 year old hotel.

I enjoyed the stay. The room could use a little updating, but it was clean and comfortable. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I didn't eat at the hotel, so I can't rate the dining. I have no complaints.

This is my place to stay whenever I need to overnight in Portland. The layout of the hotel is a bit quirky as the building is old (for example, many rooms have bathrooms not attached to the bedroom and you must go through the hallway to access them). However, in my opinion, that only adds to the European Pension-flavored charm. The staff is welcoming and knowledgeable about the area and the location is a short drive or 20 minute walk from downtown Portland. The rooms are clean and colorful but maybe a bit cramped if you're used to a generic chain hotels. Overall I'd recommend this place for the travelers looking for value and uniqueness in their lodging choices.

This is a perfectly decent hotel with above-average rooms but the guy at the front desk who "greeted" us couldn't have been more disinterested in giving us a warm, or even luke-warm welcome. He barely looked up when we checked in and seemed annoyed to have to tell us when we asked about the parking that it was in the back. The room was clean and comfortable and the hotel is super close to the airport, so we would probably stay here again despite the our experience with the unfriendly clerk. We should note, too that once we settled in and left for dinner, there was a woman at the front desk who was greeting new guests much more warmly.

I could only stay one night, but everything was quite fine. The staff was quite helpful with directions and suggestions on places to go, the room was clean, comfortable and well appointed. I'd certainly go back again.

We had a lovely stay at the Inn. Too bad that our room was in the front, we heard every car pass by. Everything else was super!

When all the bed and breakfasts were full and with no where to turn to I chanced apon this site and discovered this inn. It's really a gem.

Did not eat here. Wish I had known hospital patients get a discount - this should be publicized. Also, I made my reservation on-line and didn't know we'd have to climb so many stairs. Perhaps the web site should mention the stairs as they are steep and may not be suitable for people headed to Maine Medical Center.

The room was very beautiful. The bed was very hard for us so we both had a hard time sleeping, but we recognize that is a personal thing..some people love a hard mattress. To be honest our biggest disappointment was the breakfast. We have come to think of the term "bed and breakfast" to mean a nice home cooked meal. After we booked, we realized it said "Continental" breakfast, but still anticipated some homemade baked items. The food here is your basic continental fare from any chain hotel, maybe a little less. Again, it is a beautiful hotel and the staff was pretty nice but don't expect fancy food

This was our first inn on our seventeen day trip around New England to see the fall colors. I was disappointed in how far we were from the center of Portland, but it was fine in the end. The room was comfortable, the breakfast less than ideal, but we had a great meal at a cafe right next door, which made it all ok!

What a pleasant surprise! Our rooms were very clean, the staff was exceedingly friendly and breakfast was good. No elevator may pose a problem for some as the stairs were quite long but what a wonderful place to stay. Has a definite European feel to it. Room are spacious and well decorated. Wireless internet worked well.

Nice large room, coffee making facilities, helpful reception staff for outside dining suggestions, walk 30 min to old town habor, eat Lobster at Joe's but be there early, it is always full, free PC in Lobby + WIFI in room

The Inn at St. John was amazing. The staff were friendly, helpful, and non-intrusive. They had lemonade and iced tea, coffee, hot cocoa, tea, and cookies available most hours of the day. The continental breakfast was always fully stocked and offered many options. They also made a laptop with extremely fast internet connection available in the lobby for guests. The rooms were very clean, comfortable, and equipped with a mini-fridge, television, and robes. I will definitely make this my home-away-from-home whenever I visit the amazing city of Portland, ME. W e enjoyed our stay at the Inn. The staff was very friendly and helpful going so far as to go out and get umbrellas for us since it had started to rain. The first room was at the front street level so there was quite a bit of street noise but we were moved across the hall and we were very pleased with the new room, The Inn is warm and inviting and very well priced. While it is not right in the middle of the shopping we caught a cab for six dollars and had no regrets having chosen the Inn st St. John, If we are ever in Portland we will certainly stay there again.

Friendly and efficient with a nice character to it. Wifi was readily useable (and even worked at the pub over the road!) A bit of a walk to town but not too bad. Good breakfast selection - only slight gripe would be the breakfast area was pretty cramped (you could take a tray to your room but that's quite a hassle going up 2 flights of stairs).

Stayed at the Inn at St John between 9/16/2011-9/30/2011 and due to this extended stay the rate given for our room was great. This was the second occasion we have stayed here, and both times it has been in room 106, which is well decorated and comfortable. The room has all the comforts of a nice four star hotel, and yet it retains its own little quirkiness, and old world charm. Perhaps one of the best points of the Inn, is its staff, who always have a smile and a kind word. We would like to say a special thanks to Tim (front desk) and Crystal (housekeeping), though it is fair to say all the staff do an excellent job. I have noticed a few other reviews comment on the distance the Inn is from the Old Port, but really this is not such a bad thing at all. Portland has far too many fabulous restaurants, cafes and dinners....so you might be tempted to overdo it, so a nice walk is something you might need. Also the area around the Inn, might look a little 'downtownish' but its handy, next door you have the excellent 'Dogfish Cafe' and in the little strip mall over the street, you have a supermarket...a great little laundry and for the ladies 'Happy Nails and Hair Salon' does very good nail extensions, mani and pedicures for very reasonable prices. Portland is a great city, with lovely people, nice shops, fabulous food and cool dogs (who love to be petted) and it will be a destination we keep returning to and when we do 'The Inn at St John', will always be our home away from home.

Very nice, check-in was quick and easy. The rep at the desk was very friendly and helpful with questions and information about the surrounding area. The downtown Portland area restaurants are close by, but not really within walking distance. However, there is a fabulous Thai restaurant (Saeng Thai House) within 200 yards of the Inn. The morning Continental breakfast at the Inn is well done and the coffee is excellent.

It was definitely a charming Inn. I wanted an old school feel and that is what I got...from the lobby all the way to the room. I was emailed ahead of time that my room would be on the 3rd floor and the Inn did not have an elevator which I appreciated. I loved how it felt like a maze going to the room which added to the ambiance.

I wasn't satisfied from the city of Portland, but Inn at St. Jhons was a very nice place to stay. I appreciate the room, the bar and the service.

The stay was ok, the room was big and spacious, the TV was small and hard to see from the BIG Bed. I loved the different color towels & the Customer Service was fantastic. The Breakfast was left to be desired, so we went out somewhere else. The parking was too tight if you get back from somewhere late, there is no parking...then was called at 7am to move my car & it turns out that it was not my car!! That was the worst!

Quick check in with friendly staff. We had one of the luxury rooms and were more than pleased. They even had a computer and printer in the lobby I used to print out our boarding passes for our return flight. Just a quick cab ride to Old Port, about $6. Will definitely stay again when returning to Portland!

Tried a room w/ a single bed & shared bathroom. Great value for the price. The room had a sink & refrigerator. Convenient location for walking to downtown, and not being directly downtown meant that I explored more than I probably would have otherwise. The shared bathroom was occasionally puddled; this is more a reflection on the rudeness of other users than of the services of the Inn. Staff were helpful & friendly. Decent choices of foods for continental breakfast. Would definitely consider staying there again if I ever return to Portland.

Thought the place was quirky and great and found the staff friendly and helpful. The location was a bit far off the beaten track from downtown Portland, and the immediate neighborhood felt a bit questionable, so possible drawback there. The Inn's very close to the train station at Portland but there didn't seem to be any way to approach on foot, so bus or taxi was necessary. (I think the Inn may arrange pickups but only found out about that after the fact.)

we had one hard pillow and one soft. We prefer soft. When we asked at the front desk for an addition soft, the young man told me they were all hard and didn't offer to go check for us. Other than that, the front desk was very helpful in answering any questions we had and getting us a cab to the airport.

The rooms and hotel are so charming!Was a little disappointed that the continental breakfast was all cleaned up and taken care of promptly at three minutes before 10.

The Inn at St. John was lovely. We stayed with two friends of ours and all four of us were pleased with the service that the St. John provided. The rooms and bathrooms were clean and comfortable. They had several options with different prices that fit our needs for a bed and breakfast feel without spending $200+ a night each! The breakfast was a bit of a dissapointment and the coffee was weak, but other than that - we would recommend the St. John!

My wife and I felt like we were staying in a charming small European hotel. Pleasantly surprised with a room upgrade upon check-in and enjoyed a lovely room with king bed and jetted bath. Helpful, friendly staff. Made our 25th wedding anniversary a very special occasion without breaking the bank.

We got the last room for the night so we were happy. The staff was mostly helpful but not near as "enthusiastic" as reported on previous reviews. The price was great for what we needed...a bed to sleep in. Our room was big but next to the main road and a little noisy. Also, the hotel is located just across the street from the bus station and a couple of block off the highway. We walked to a really cool restaurant but the walk was farther than we were told by the staff and I was a little worried about the neighborhood and walking in the dark. The parking is very limited. If you can't climb stairs then make sure you are not on the third floor...no elevators.

Charming hotel - much like ones I have stayed in in England. The only negative is the location - it's a hike from downtown, and after dark there aren't enough people out and about in the vicinity to make it feel safe (though it probably is). The price, though, as compared to the downtown hotels, more than makes up for the location. There is also free parking.

The rooms at St John INN were lovely. They even had a small fridge and bathrobes provided. Very clean. The maid/front desk service was excellent. Very accommodating. I fyou needed anything extra, it was promptly provided to you. Even gave me wine glasses to use for my bottle of wine. The dinign area for the continental breakfoast was cramped. That was realy the only negative. Would stay there again if I return to the area.

We love to stay in this charming hotel with a long history and very cosy rooms. We loved our room :-)

One night stay in an upgraded larghe room with king bed. Quite an oldfashioned atmosphere, but good quality for a relatively low price.

Inn at St. Johns is in town close to many attractions. Employees were helpful and professional. Extra amenities like snacks and drinks round-the-clock. Room was small as expected, but perfect fro oen person. Very clean and interesting historic building.

We had a good sized room with private bath, a queen and full size bed. My husband enjoyed the fact that the windows actually opened for fresh air. Although Maine Med is just up the street, it was surprisingly quiet, even with the windows open. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. We had a fabulous meal (and an excellent cosmo) at the Dogfish Cafe right next door. All in all, a great evening.

Staff at the inn are REALLY nice! I thought it was a great deal for the price - free parking and breakfast (croissants, muffins, cereal, fruit, granola bars, yogurt, coffee/tee) were included, as well as cookies offered after breakfast time.

I found my stay at the St.John's Inn in Portland ME a satisfactory one. My room was kept clean, but was rather small. I had a private bathroom outside of my room, but just two steps to walk, so it worked out fine. The breakfast was minimal, so I had breakfasts elsewhere instead. The computer in the lobby was helpful as I did not have my laptop with me. The inn is across the street from the Greyhound station and not far from the Concord Coach and Amtrak stations. The area is relatively safe, I think, but one should take precautions if walking alone late. This inn is within a 20-30 minutes walk to downtown and waterfront area. Alternatively, there is a bus stop across the street and buses are relatively frequent (except for evening times). Also, you can cross the street and get a cab at the Grteyhound station. All in all, I loved Portland! St.John's was not bad choice in an overall expensive city. Vladimir

The Inn was very clean and comfortable. We were treated great. Great continental breakfast. We will be staying there again.

The Inn was a little bit further from the Old Port area than I had expected, but still a reasonable walking distance (though I confess, I really love to walk). I was happily surprised that the Greyhound stop was right across the street! The people at the front desk and the housekeeper were all totally delightful and warm; I highly recommend this place!

I stayed for one night at the Inn at St John and it truly is great value. It is a little far from the downtown area for my taste, but the person at the desk called a cab for me which was not expensive. Definitely worth staying there.

Inn at St John was a good BB. The room was large with a comfortable bed, clean bathroom and refrigerator. The location allows for walking to art district and Old Port. There is private parking!

This was a lovely place to stay and a great value in Portland! The Inn had much more personality and charm than the chain hotels and for a good price. Staff was friendly and personable and provided directions and suggestions for places to go, things to do. Parking and breakfast was provided. I was unsure about staying in a room with a bathroom across the hall, but it was not an inconvenience at all. All around, an enjoyable stay!

Just wanted to spend a cheap night in Portland. There aren't many options for people that don't have a car. This is over the road from the greyhound terminal and it's walkable to the amtrak/concord bus terminal. The walk downtown takes about 30 mins and the area seems a little sketchy so I chose to get a cab back after dark (as was suggested by the hotel staff) and this cost $10 with tip. The room was small, but clean and comfortable with little toiletries, a TV and wash basin. I opted to share a bathroom, but this was just next door and was clean and there was a bathrobe I could use too. Free tea and coffee (and cakes?) downstairs all day. Breakfast was basic tea, coffee, bagel, pastry, yoghurt, but more than acceptable for what I paid. Wifi wasn't working when I was there, but once the staff were alerted to this, they seemed to take steps to get it fixed and there was a computer that guests could use for free anyway. Staff very pleasant and helpful. Overall, I would stay here again. Meets my needs 100%.

The décor is Victoriana chintz and the location is only OK but there is ample parking (free) and free wifi, also a computer and printer, and cookies available all day, the breakfast is continental type, but with fresh muffins etc

This inn was all we could have asked for. We had a great night's stay with a fine breakfast.

I was really pleased to be able to park close to the door, have a room on the first floor near the door and to have help with my luggage. The room was clean, with a large bathroom, TV, and all services I needed. The staff were very friendly.

Close to downtown and the waterfront via bus. Good sized room; slept well. If I stay in Portland again, I will stay at the Inn at St. John.

We stayed for two nights earlier this month. Everyone on the staff was very pleasant and helpful. We have shared bathrooms countless times before, but this one felt more like a public bathroom in the spartan nature of it, and the shower was the smallest I have ever encountered. This aspect of the stay negatively affected my review, I'm afraid, because the rest of the stay was pleasant.

The Inn at St John had a really quaint, boutiquey, non-generic atmosphere, the staff were helpful and friendly, and the location was convenient to downtown. Initially, we were a little concerned about getting a room with a shared bathroom, but it did not pose any problems. I enjoyed waking every morning to the smell of coffee drifting up the stairs. We recommend this place.

I stayed here the night before my wedding, so it was kind of a whirlwind. All in all, no complaints. It was nicer and had more character than the local hotels that were comparably priced, and it was only about a mile from the Old Port.

Not too hard, not too soft ... just right. And the bear (our dog) liked it too. Rooms are cozy (tight) but if you travel in Europe they are what you'd expect from a small pension. Our son now lives in Portland and so we will try to stay at The Inn ans St John whenever we go to visit. The first visit, however, is a bit of a trial to find it and find their parking given a set of one-way streets, proximity to I295 and the Inn's humble facade and signage. Be patient. Once you get it you are set.

The room was great and exceeded our expectation. The person at the front desk was friendly and helpful with information about the Portland area. However, we had a problem the morning after our stay. The hot water heater was not working correctly, so my husband and myself both had lukewarm to cold showers. It was very disappointing. We let the front desk know, and they advised us that that the hot water heater was broken and that there was nothing that could be done until the Monday morning when they could call the repairman or manager. I know it is not their fault, but it made for a less-than-pleasant shower for both of us.

Nice small hotel, easy walking to the center of town. Narrow hallways and stairs, so guests must be willing to navigate. The room was a double and queen, clean, comfortable beds. Would stay there again.

I found the accomidations at the St. John to be nice and commensorate with the $149 nightly rate charged. Some may have objected to the 3rd floor climb but once that was accomplished, the room was both clean and attractive. Although a queen size bed was booked, what was provided was more of a full (noticibly smaller than the queen I sleep in at home). When I called and questioned the front desk, the male clerk was dismissive and unresponsive, contrary to the pleasant and accomidating woman that processed the checkin. During my stay, I brought a bike and the St John provided storage and a rack. Parking was provided as well, although I needed to park in the overflow area next door (this was not an issue). It should be noted that the inn is quite a distance to the old town area making it a difficult walk for the cardio challenged. Restaurants in the old town area are pleantiful, diverse, and fair in price (the salt exchange was fantastic). Overall, my stay at the inn was good and I would stay there again, if so, I hope to be provided a true standard queen sized bed.

The only change I would have made was to go with a private bathroom in the room. The private hall bath was fine, but in the middle of the night, having to use multiple doors was a bit of a hassle when you're half asleep. But the room was great, bed was comfy and the breakfast was great! A cab ride to downtown Portland was only $7 - which is a great price, and you can save money with this hotel - I would definitely stay here again and would recommend it!!

Utterly charming B&B on the outskirts of Portland! The management has thought of everything - from 24-hour-coffee to wireless everywhere on site. And the rooms are utterly charming and generous in size. We will definitely stay here again next time we come through Portland
