Cleftstone Manor

Clefstone Manor is not only a wonderful B&B, it contains within it’s walls the history of Bar Harbor and the many summer homes that grace the landscape of this charming town. Our stay was so comfortable and the owners shared the wonderful history of the original owner as well as the history of the property and how it has changed over the years. From the delightful breakfasts laced with local blueberries and fresh fruits to the relaxing gardens and evening appetizers, the welcoming warmth of this B&B is one we will remember fondly and look forward to returning to in the years ahead.

Overall, our one night stay was very comfortable. The room was wonderful (when we arrived we had been upgraded which was nice). The breakfast was very good as well. The only thing that was unpleasant was the service we received. The "owner" or front desk receptionist was not welcoming at all and completely unfriendly. We were disappointed about that but other than that it was a nice place to stay in.

Beautiful manor, rich with history. Yet, so cozy, warm and inviting. The owners are very friendly and helpful and the breakfasts are delightful. The rooms are pretty, and cozy. Great bed to snuggle in after those long hikes in Acadia. No question, a great stay at an awesome location. We will definitely be back! Thank you!! Monika & Adam

Innkeeper friendly and helpful regarding area attractions. Late afternoon snacks very nice. One day they were so plentiful we didn't even eat dinner. Friendly breakfast staff.

We had a perfectly lovely time at the Cleftstone. Our room (John Clark) was very comfortable and I loved the fireplace. We would enjoy going again. The entire Manor is beautiful, cozy. Just what I wanted. My only critique was the breakfast. The food was delicious. What I want to say is not a fault of the Manor but rather my preference. For breakfast, I wished we had sat in the dining room with others at the large table and had an opportunity to chat with other guests: family style, or boarding house style. The dining room is gorgeous and beckoned to me of such a dining style. As it was we sat at individual tables in the kitchen/adjacent room.

Delicious, gourmet breakfasts! The Laura Blair room was amazing! We have never stayed in the same place twice in Bar Harbor, but that will change! We will definitely stay again!!

We enjoyed every moment of our stay. Anne & Robert were gracious and welcoming. The food was excellent and our bonus appetizers in the evening along with the company of our hosts and other guests made us feel cozy and at home. We will return! Pat & Ted

First experience with a B & B. Will definitely be looking to use B & B's in the future.

The breakfasts were great! The Inn is conveniently located only a couple minutes from Bar Harbor shops and restaurants, by car. We had one of the smaller rooms with a detached bath. Fortunately, the Inn provided robes so that you didn't need to dress just to use the bathroom. The TV in the room was small and situated on a table near the foot of the bed. The height of the table was too low in relation to the height of the bed for easy viewing from bed. If you wanted to watch TV from the sitting area, you had to move the table and turn the TV about 120 degrees. Perhaps a flat screen TV mounted on the door jamb between the bedroom and the sitting area would allow the TV to be viewed from both areas by just turning the screen. A small, very small inconvenience and would not keep us from staying at Clefstone Manor in the same room in the future.

I am so very happy my husband and i discovered Cleftstone! we have spent a lot of time in Bar Harbor over the years, but somehow missed this treasure! i hope to spend more time at Cleftstone in our future!!! It is so lovely, with all the beautiful furniture and fireplaces and dishes..books, etc! We were so well taken care of by the hostess /owner....she is so personable and friendly and helpful. Everything was amazing. Thanks!

The pictures online do not do this place justice. We were a little apprehensive but our room was very nice and had a working fireplace! The price was very reasonable and the food and service of the morning staff was great. They had a nice cocktail hour (BYOB) downstairs every evening which gave people the oppertunity to be social and get to know the other guests. Participation is not mandatory, but it was quite enjoyable to talk and learn about the others staying there and where they were from. The only slighty strange thing about this place is the innkeeper. Oddly, she is very nice and personable in the evening and morning, but if you encounter her in the middle of the day she is not as friendly. Its a small thing, but my husband and I certainly noticed it. I would suggest not to take it personally. Other than that, the place is really great!

My husband and I were here for 4 days to see fall colors. It rained most of the time, but we were ready for it. Everyday we can home about 4 and Ann had a roaring fire going. Just what we needed to take our chill off. At 5;30 headed to the sitting room for a happy/social hour. We met some great people and had wonderful conversations. In the morning, breakfast, well you are in for a hugh treat. They were outstanding. Looking forward to a return visit.

It was an outstanding place to stay for our 2 days in Bar Harbor. Everyone was so friendly. I felt that the owner and staff really cared about us and our stay.

Staff were friendly and freely gave advice if requested. Building historic, rooms clean, mattresses ok. Afternoon snacks were fabulous as were the homemade breakfasts. Yummy!

We stayed at Cleftstone Manor for a week in the middle of September and it was another wonderful stay. Ann and Bob the innkeepers are wonderful people who run a beautiful B&B they serve a fantastic breakfast and it is a great place to stay. The rooms are well appointed and reflect the character of when the place was built. I had only two problems with the room, the bed is too high and too soft for me, but that is a personal preference. All in all a great place to stay, we look forward to returning.

Our stay was a step back to a time when elegance, service, community and exceptional cuisine were the norm. Bob and Anne are warm and friendly hosts.

Me and my husband stayed in Woodbury Park and loved it! This is our second time at Cleftstone and we could not be happier with our stay there. The breakfasts our amazing and very filling. Anne is very helpful in her suggestions on where to eat and things to do. We will be back again!

I have stayed in many B&B's. This was one of the best. Anne and Bob have a beautiful place. The food is wonderful, the rooms are beautiful and charming, the afternoon hors de oevres were fantastic and you are close to everything. We will definitely return in the near future. Glenn R. Cleftstone Manor was a wonderful place to stay! The inkeepers were helpful regarding help learning the area as well as questions about the home. They were particularly helpful with my gluten free diet and served me beautiful and tasty breakfasts, and were pleased to meet the acomodation. Should we ever be in the area, we most likely would return to Cleftstone.

Our room was a suite with pull-out bed on the sunporch. Even on our rainy day it was bright and lovely. The common rooms were inviting and comfortable, and we enjoyed meeting the other guests.

Outstanding and varied breakfasts were the highlight of our stay. Food and service were outstanding. Room was nice but claw tub in bathroom was hard to get into, considering I have a bad knee and my wife had sprained her back a few days before we went on vacation.

This inn is nicely located close to both the town and the park. The innkeeper tries hard to provide good service. The rooms were nicely appointed but need new carpeting. The afternoon wine and cheese/hor de'ourves was a nice touch. If a cruise ship is in town, then bus loads of passengers take tours of the inn, I thought this was inappropriate.

Staff especially Carol was warm, friendly and informative...food was absolutely wonderful...although it would have been nice to have paper plates available with the afternoon snacks...overall we had an very pleasant stay and would not hesitate to recommend Cleftstone Manor to friends and family or to stay there again outselves.

This was a very pleasant stay at this historical inn. We were given a complimentary CD to do a car tour of the area. Room was nice and clean. A little small but adequate. Breakfast was very good. Not always someone at the front desk, but friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend and would stay there again.

The room was spacious, but some of the bathroom features were antiquated: separate faucets for hot and cold water and the toilet bowl ran unless the handle was jiggled. The breakfasts were very nicely presented, but the quality of the food was below average and became monotonous over a 4 day stay.

Magnificent B&B. Loved our four day stay there. We had a cute room and huge bathroom, complete with clawed footed tub. Breakfasts were scrumptious, varied, very well thought out and meticulously prepared. A Happy Hour, from 5:30 to 6:30, where delicious "haute cuisine" canapes and appetizers were provided, gave guests an opportunity to meet and socialize, and we met wonderful people during the course of our stay: an excellent initiative on Anne's part. Anne Bahr was a delight to meet, and we look forward to returning to Barr Harbor and revisiting. Big thank you to Anne, Robert and her wonderful staff for such a great stay. We'll meet again. A very pleasant stay. Escaping the heat of Texas in late August makes any part of ME hard to beat. However, after a day in Portland and two days in Camden, where we had wonderful accommodations as well, the Cleftstone Manor was superb. Service was excellent, staff very helpful and thoughtful, and food beyond expectations. We booked rather late and next trip anticipate booking different rooms, which seem to offer greater amenities. We loved our stay at Cleftstone Manor. We were unable to take advantage of the breakfasts due to scheduling activities in the am. But the hostess made us bags of food to take. That was really nice. Rooms were very comfortable.

Just wonderful - - - centrally located to everything we wanted to do, nice comfortable room w/other rooms for socializing, eating, drinking, reading, and relaxing. Staff is pleasant and knowledgeable with information on surrounding area. Not only was the gourmet breakfast excellent, but as soon as we sat down we were waited on. They were there to serve, and please their guests. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

The room was spacious and comfortably furnished. The photos are a good representation of the decor and everything was very clean. The atmosphere was friendly and the welcome tray set out in the bedroom was exceptional. The meals were really satisfying - no one left the table hungry or had to cut their hiking short to get to the next meal. The staff was really responsive and friendly. Our bed was much too hard for me, so I didn't sleep well. Next time I'd bring a foam mattress topper.

We stayed in the Woodbury Park room. I loved the old fashioned decor and laid back atmosphere. It was very relaxing! The breakfasts were wonderful, if you stay there and they have the egg cups I recommend them, they were great! The staff was friendly and helpful. If I ever make it up to Bar Harbor again, I'll definately stay at the Cleftstone!

We had a lovely and very comfortable room, delicious food, moderate price right in the shadow of beautiful Acadia National Park. Anne Bahr was very welcoming and helpful in suggesting things to do, like the Acadia Theater.

Cleftstone Manor is a lovely spot just far enough away from the village of Bar Harbor to let you get away from the business of down town. The owners Ann and Bob are great sources of information and Cheryl who is on staff there is wonderful! I can't imagine not enjoying your stay at this beautiful B&B.

we spent a long weekend and found the place worth the money. The room was small but enough for a couple, the bed spread didn't look very new, but overall the house was clean. walking downtown Bar Harbor takes 15- 20 min. there is some traffic noise from the nearby road. breakfast was ok.

We planned a quick getaway to Bar Harbor with friends. We had 3 rooms, one was the Cleftstone Room. They were each lovely, clean, comfy and a great place to stay. We are already planning our next weekend there. Quant, welcoming and quiet. Breakfast was very nice. Could have been a bit less rushed. Owner was delightful. Try it, I think you will be very happy!

We had the best time at Cleftstone Manner. Anne made us feel like a member of her family, our room was charming, and food great. We plan to come here again. Walking distance to town, Anne's restaurant recommendations were spot on--what a wonderful time we had.

This is a lovely b&b just outside the main bustle of Bar Harbor. There is welcome access to the swimming pool at the hotel next door. Afternoon snacks and breakfasts are wonderful!

This place is absolutely wonderful. I've NEVER had better in all the places I've traveled. Its a combination of atmosphere and hospitality that won me over, not to mention the history of this house.

We found the Cleftstone Manor to be very nice. It was old, but very well kept. We had 2 different rooms, with 2 adult couples. The AC was a window unit and very loud. The AC did keep down the noise of the busy, heavy, loud traffic on Eden Street. Anne Bahr was very helpful suggesting a very good restaurant. And helping direct us to Cadillac Mountain. The breakfast food was delicious. Everyone was very helpful and couteous.

We found an open room at Cleftstone pretty last minute, and didn't know what we'd signed up for. There were beautiful photos, but you never know these days. Anyway, when we checked in it was beautiful. The room (we stayed in the Gist Blair) was really great, and so so clean! Also - the food was excellent. Creme brulee french toast all the way! Also - the staff was pretty hands-off other than providing great service at breakfast. Which, for me, is great -- because they were there if needed, but not always buzzing around. We were more inclined to explore Bar Harbor on our own agenda so that worked out great. Also - we didn't get to meet her until we were packing our car to leave but they had the cutest dog, Nellie - who greeted us in the parking lot the last day! Would definitely go back.

We just returned from the best vacation ever. We spent ten days (8/2/11-8/12/11) exploring Mount Desert Island and enjoying the wonderful hospitality at Cleftstone Manor in Bar Harbor. We don't have a vast experience with B & Bs but I am sure that any future stay anywhere else will have to go a long way to beat this one. The room was perfect, comfortable and well appointed. Anne's breakfasts (I am a breakfast person) were outstanding and her hospitality was genuine and very warm. The staff was very friendly and accommodating and the "tea time" was not to be missed. Cleftstone Manor is a lovely place to stay. We were disappointed, however, that the room we chose was very small, smaller than the picture indicated. The other issue was the annoyance of its location on Highway 3. Rather than being able to enjoy the wonderful fresh air with open windows, we had to turn the air conditioner on high to mask the traffic noise. But on a more positive note, the breakfasts were outstanding and the service was great. We would stay there again, now that we know which rooms are on the back side and are larger.

We were greated at the door upon arrival, checked in and then was given a personal tour of the home by the owner. We've done several B & B in the Bar Harbor, Maine area. . .the Cleftstone, has by far, the best breakfast of any - - -hands down !!! Tom & Vickie Toledo, Ohio

My husband and I loved our stay at Cleftstone Manor! The room was neat and tidy; the staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and incredibly accommodating. You can walk to all the restaurants and shops in downtown Bar Harbor from there easily. Hands down, the best part of our stay was the amazing breakfast daily! We highly recommend Cleftstone Manor.

Perfect location if you are visiting the College of the Atlantic as you can walk across the street! Cute and comfortable. The breakfasts and afternoon snacks are fabulous and make this a very good choice for the reasonable cost. Easy access to the Island bus transportation also.

We arrived late and set out after breakfast the next day to explore, so we didn't personally meet the innkeeper face-to-face. The kitchen staff was busy serving breakfast in the morning, so there seemed to be less of a personal touch by never having an introduction. All-in-all a good stay though.

Sitting just a short walk from the center of town this was a very nice place to stay. It was everything we enjoy in a B&B. Our room, the Frank Ellis, was small but quite comfortable. The breakfasts were delicious! The owner, Ann, was a wonderful hostess with helpful suggestions on places for dinner and interesting conversation about the town. This being my second time in a B&B I was very impressed with the accomodations and professsionalism of the staff. The food was teriffice and the B&B was conviently located to public transportation; which is a big plus for this time of year regarding downtown parking. I would stay here again!

In June we spent 4 days at Cleftstone Manor and highly recommend it to other travelers. There is so much beauty and history in this home and it is run by a very nice couple and helpers. Our room was clean and very night there was a log in our fireplace in our bedroom. (Yes, we heated our room in June!) If you are considering a visit to Bar Harbor or Arcadia National Park, I highly recommend this is a part of your trip. It is well worth the cost.

Beautiful inn, charming atmosphere, good service. My room (Kebo valley) was large and absolutely comfortable for a family of three (son is 16 y/o), the only downside was a bit of noise from the main street. This is a B&B so you have to take your car to reach one of the many restaurants of Bar Harbor and in July finding a parking spot was like winning a lottery, but this of course is not a fault of the Inn. All in all, highly recommended for a pleasant stay in Bar Harbor.

Light over sink didn't work. Sink drained slowly. Otherwise, satisfied.

Booked a premium room which is worth the upgrade price for privacy and space. Innkeeper gave very good recommendations on places to eat dinner. Breakfast choices at inn were good and filing. Only negative is just a little too too far from town for walking easily.

We had a very enjoyable 2-day stay at Cleftstone Manor. Charming place. Very hospitable. Breakfast and afternoon tea were tasty. Room rates were better than many other options we considered. Location was excellent. The town was an easy 3/4 mile walk, and saved us the trouble of finding parking at dinner time. Annie, the owner, was very pleasant and helpful. Overall fine experience.

Recently we visited Bar Harbor for three days and had the pleasure of staying at Cleftstone Manor. Anne, the owner was so helpful providing recommendations of things to see and do while in the area. The happy-hours she host in the evenings are an great opportunity to meet other guest from around the world. Anne does all of the cooking at Cleftstone and it is out of this world. Everything is homemade and it is all delicious. I would definitely recommend this inn to friends and family.

My wife and I are from New England and have stayed in many NE B&Bs as well as some in Bar Harbor previously over the last 30 years. This one is OK but not on a par with many in which we have stayed. It lacked the “B&B” feel and it is a bit difficult to nail down exactly why. The building had a “dingy” feel not very bright and cheerful. The only place that was an exception was the Sun room where guests gather for afternoon refreshments. The B&B’s location is bit odd as it is located on a steep entry road and adjacent to a large motel/hotel complex. Our room (Pulitzer Premium A) was large/clean with 2 entrances - a private entrance to the room via a private patio and another door that exits through a bathroom to the dining room. A bit odd we thought. As it was located next to kitchen and dining room it wasa bit noisy in the AM. The room also lost some of the feeling of privacy because of the location. Breakfast was good but a bit restrictive and could use more choices. Nice period furnishings. Inn keeper was very friendly. All and all ok but certainly not up to the standards of other B&Bs in that price range where we have stayed.

James G. Blaine room is great... corner unit with fireplace. About 15-20 minute walk to center of Bar Harbor. Fairly good B&B value considering the area. Breakfast is good... kept my wife and I full until the mid afternoon even during days of intense hiking through Acadia.

This was our 5th stay at Cleftstone Manor. Before discovering this gem, we tried a variety of places in Bar Harbor, never liking any well enough to return. Suffice it to say, we have found our permanent Bar Harbor spot. Cleftstone Manor is warm and inviting, the breakfasts are superb, Anne is friendly and helpful and it is always a perfect and relaxing stay! Highly recommended!!!

We would return to stay here as it was very elegant with beautiful furnishings. Very large and impressive. Our room was quaint with a lovely large original historic bathroom with clawfoot tub and marble vanity with antique faucets. Very well appointed. Owner made herself very available and friendly. The location was easy to find and the Manor sat upon a hill. The afternoon social hour was a nice touch with complimentary beverages and appetizers.

We are repeat lodgers at the Cleftstone. We love the different rooms and the history of the place. Anne is a great hostess and the breakfasts are scrumptious--often it's hard to decide between the two choices offered. The early evening appetizers encourage the mingling among guests--it's great fun to meet folks from all over America.

My friend and I experienced our first trip to Bar Harbor and were pleasantly surprised. Bar Harbor is beautiful and there are many things to do there to keep you occupied, even on rainy days. We were very happy with our accomodations. Cleftstone Manor is a grand house and tastefully decorated. Our room was comfortable and clean, with all the amenities one would expect at a well-run bed and breakfast. The food was outstanding! We were greeted and treated to appetizers served in the sunrroom on our arrival. Each night, we brought a glass of wine down and enjoyed the appetizers. The hostess (owner) was there each evening to chat and offer ideas for activities and restaurants. The breakfasts were always well presented and delicious! A There were always two choices and were always ample! All in all, I'd highly recommend the Cleftstone Manor.

We came after a 3 day stay in Quebec and found the history from there and Bar Harbor were so intertwined. It felt like an extension of the trip, especially when we found out that the architect of the Hotel Frontenac where we had our anniversary dinner, was also the architect of the Manor. Breakfasts were glorious and the hospitality and charm was wonderful. We stayed on the 2nd floor and had a great room at the front.

Lovely Bed and Breakfast with wonderful hosts! A bit of a "quirky" location - would have preferred to be a bit closer to town. Breakfasts were delicious with plenty of choice available. All in all a lovely place to stay with shared amenities with the Bluestone Inn above. In warmer weather the pool would have been a real plus. We had a delightful two nights and the price was very reasonable.

The Cleftstone Manor proved to be an outstanding value - our room was comfortable, the inn was cozy and quiet despite being nearly completely booked. Breakfast was excellent and the innkeepers were personable and welcoming. With lots of construction going on in Bar Harbor, we were away from it all. We enjoyed being just outside the busy part of town while close enough that we were minutes away by car. Parking was free and plentiful. We would definitely return.

I found Cleftstone manner to be acceptable. The room was a good size and breakfast was good, staff was friendly. I did not like the location as it was next a big commercial hotel and therefore not very private or cozy. The patio was not private and was shared with neighboring rooms which was not mentioned in the website. Finally, we found a few small bugs in the bathroom.

Our host, Anne was very gracious and helpful. She had many great suggestions for places to eat and things to do in Bar Harbor. But what we will remember the most were the gourmet breakfasts, they were outstanding!

The Inn is a well cared for old home.....the common areas are warm and welcoming. Our room was very nice, had a fireplace ( too warm to use it) and great decor. We will stay there again whenever we are in the area!

We stayed in the Cleftstone room, and the moment I walked in the first words out of my mouth were "oh my god this room is amazing!" because it was! Beautiful, comfortable and perfect. Our stay was too short, but we will return, enjoy the fireplace, curl up on the couch and enjoy chatting with our hosts. Also, the breakfasts were beyond fabulous. Thank you again, Amazing, wonderful time in the most beautiful room I've ever stayed in.

Shared the Kebo Valley room with 2 close friends. Golden Age mansion converted to B&B still retains much of the aura of yesteryear. Location is very close to Acadia N. P. and within walking distance to downtown. Breakfasts were excellent, especially the red pepper quiche! While the room was charming, if you weigh over 100lbs avoid the sofa bed and sleep on the couch instead. Ann, the host, was most charming. No longer have computer in library area so bring your laptop for the free wifi. All things considered a great experience. JBT

This was a wonderful place to spend a few days of our honeymoon. Wonderful innkeepers, delicious breakfast, and comfortable rooms. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone staying on Bar Harbor.

We love this inn and try to stay here every time we come to Bar Harbor (usually once or twice a year). We prefer the Joseph Pulitzer or Kebo Valley rooms but others are nice. The hostess, Anne, is interesting and lively. The staff keeps the inn clean and running smoothly. Breakfast has 2 excellent hot options as well as cold options. They put out a treat in the afternoons. Anne can steer you towards attractions if you need help deciding what to see or do. I would definitely recommend this inn if you are spending any time in the park! Gary and Alice

We stayed three nights and very much enjoyed the accommodations. The room was spacious, the breakfasts were enjoyable and filling, and additional "little" considerations made the Cleftstone a great choice. We wouldn't hesitate to return.

This room was excellent for 3 people. Anne was an excellent host and the wait staff very friendly and good service. The price is reasonable and the rooms cozy and clean. Very good breakfast and atmosphere. There were games and DVDs available for in room entertainment. Anne made an excellent recommendation for Maggie's Restaurant for dinner. Wonderful stay. Check in and orientation was quick and to the point. Owner met us on arrival. Very comfortable bed. Clean in all respects. Staff was very friendly and accomodating. Breakfast was to die for. Best coffee I've had in years. We shall return!

We stayed three nights, my wife (who was not aware of the arrangements ahead of time) did not want to leave. The room was wonderful - we were on the third floor, but I knew that from the description - the hosts were super helpful, and the food was tasty. Appetizers in the afternoon were a wonderful treat - sitting around the fireplace talking to other guests. The recommendations for places to eat in the evening were excellent (our 2nd night we listened to someone else, and unfortunately found that there is at least one "poor" restaurant in the area; whereas the two recommendations from the hosts were a great meal at a great value.

We enjoyed our stay. However, we felt barely acknowledged when we arrived. The owner/manager is not very friendly. The breakfast waitstaff were very cordial and made us feel welcome. The food was very good.

Very nice Bed and Breakfast. Somewhat difficult to walk to town. Staff was helpful for locating restaurants in town. Beautiful appointed rooms. Third floor room has low ceilings. Might be difficult for tall people. Overall a very nice place.

We found Cleftstone not only convenient but very confortable. We stayed in the Joseph Pulitzer room with a private entrance which my husband really liked. The little garden sitting area was very nice. The history of the building and area was also very interesting. I would like to return and spend more time there.

The owner was very gracious, friendly, and personable; the staff was professional and courteous; the entire facility was immaculate; and we had a wonderful time. We definitely would go back to the Cleftstone Manor in the future!

This was the best bed and breaksfast I have ever stayed in. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The breakfast menu was outstanding and the history provided about the home and surround area was terrific. I will most definitely be back.

We thoroughly enjoyed our six nights at Cleftstone Manor! And HIGHLY recommend it to anyone staying in the Bar Harbor area! Just be prepared to gain a few pounds because you will not resist the temptation to clean your plate each morning! The GREAT food, friendly service and interesting surroundings of this elegantly-aged home make it easy to get up for breakfast and a good cup of coffee every day! We, of course, spent a lot of time out and about each day and really liked the open door policy that did not limit when we came and went. LOVED that the beds were made for us each morning...what a nice amenity, and that there were interesting things, like the upstairs library, for us to freely enjoy within the house. We have stayed at a lot of B&Bs, Cleftstone Manor is now DEFINITELY among our favorites! We thank Anne, Bob and your friendly, attentive staff for such a nice visit! An awesome accommodation in a wonderful mansion The only blackhole was the cleaness of the bathroom

This was my first bed and breakfast experience. The property was beautiful and the breakfast was delicious. Since this was our first B&B visit, we really didn't know what to expect. A co-worker stayed at a Bar Harbor Inn and raved about how friendly the innkeeper was. This was not the case at the Cleftstone Manor. If we asked the innkeeper a question, she would answer but she did not go out of her way to speak to us. At times, it seemed like we were bothering her. Although the property was nice, our room had peeling paint and wallpaper and when I went to unplug the hair dryer, the entire electric plate came away from the wall. We paid a lot of money for this room, however, I do not feel it was worth it.

The host was very helpful, made a personal call to get us into the hottest restaurant in town on short notice (and it was wonderful). Lots of great reading material about Bar Harbor and the Inn, and historical touches throughout which made you really feel as if you were a part of the place.

Location of Inn was very easy to find. House was very clean and decorated well. Room was clean, food was excellent, picnic carry lunch was great, prepared and ready on time I requested. While checking in, owner could have been more personable and happy to have us staying there, no smile, quick answers, fast tour of house. When asked questions about other things to do, I wasn't given much for entertainment in the area. Wifi computer connection was extremely slow, no security for connection.

A few words of advice in regards to the Cleftstone: If what you're looking for is a five star modern hotel with all modern furniture, fixtures, and amenities, this isn't the place for you. If, however, you're looking forward to staying in a beautifully maintained historic inn with loads of charm and character, truly gourmet breakfasts, and an engaging innkeeper and friendly staff, then please by all means, make that reservation right now. Our recent stay at the Cleftstone was all of that and more. Anne will tell you that she's not a chef, but that is belied by the excellent breakfasts that came every morning from the kitchen to tantalize our tastebuds - As mentioned before, the Roasted Red Pepper Quiche is fantastic, but so are the Kahlua Pecan Waffles and the Strata was simply out of this world. We had no issues with road noise (admittedly, we did have the air conditioning running, it was quite warm last week!) and I would caution those who are tall or broad in the beam that they may find the Josephine McCaffrey not to their liking as the quarters can be a little on the close side. But that said, we greatly enjoyed our stay and are very much looking forward to a return trip. Hope to see you there!

When one enjoys staying at an establishment, he/she may well return for a second time. We are just completing our 20th (you read that correctly) stay at the Cleftstone Manor. Our visits have been and continue to be outstanding, from Anne and Bob Bahr and their very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful staff, to the exceptionally clean rooms and delicious breakfasts, to the beauty, history, and Old World charm of the Cleftstone Manor. Please do not miss the opportunity to stay at this extraordinary inn.

Our stay at the Cleftstone Manor exceeded our expectations. Particularly notable were the outstanding breakfasts - truly gourmet. Room was nice and spacious, but lacked a usable table. Staff very helpful. It is a good value as the price is below many area B&Bs.

We visited the Cleftstone Manor for 3 nights on our honeymoon. I did lots of research on the surrounding bed and breakfasts and this one had everything we were looking for. We chose the Cleftstone room, due to the recommendation of the owner, Anne, that it was a favorite with honeymooners. OUR ROOM: Much larger than expected. Beautifully furnished. Fireplace. Four Post bed. Terry cloth robes. TV and DVD player. Telephone and Desk. THE INN: Relaxing, welcoming, comfortable. Abbie's Retreat was a nice place to sit and read. The front room with the fireplace provided the perfect backdrop for appetizers and drinks before dinner. We met some of the other guests at happy hour as well. Tea and coffee was readily available almost all day. BREAKFAST: Delicious 3 course breakfasts. Varies by day. The first day: pears and raspberries, cranberry muffins, choice of blueberry pancakes or egg and ham cups. The second day: cantalope and strawberries, blueberry muffins, choice of lemon poppyseed waffle or eggs benedict. The third day: mixed fruit cup, pineapple muffins and a choice of blueberry french toast or eggs, any way with bacon. Every morning you were offered coffee, tea, O.J. or cranberry juice as well as a croissant. The food was plenty filling for a day exploring Mount Desert Island. MISCELLANEOUS: The owner Anne, as well as her staff, Grace and Cheryl, were quite accommodating, willing to answer any and all questions. Anne lent us a CD of a tour of Acadia that helped us enjoy this magnificent national park, just ask her. DVD's were available to watch, there were books all over the inn and places to sit and read or chat. Soda and Water were available for $1 a piece on the honor system. We wandered the manor awhile and checked out some of the other rooms. All were beautifully furnished. The location was less than a 5 minute drive to the main pier in Bar Harbor or to the entrance to Acadia National Park.

inviting, warm, great host and hostess...ideal for a quiet rest,rooms are elegant but there's also so much to do around you, the afternoon wine a cheese was a great time to hear what other have done and recommendations, so was b/fast which was a feast to behold. Have yet to dare try another B&B ....not sure any would compare

This was our favorite inn in our entire 10 day vacation in Maine and Mass.!! We loved the warm hospitality of the hosts. The breakfast was excellent. The 5:00 social hour in the parlor with appetizers helped us to meet fellow travelers and we loved discussing the house with the owners! Great place. WE want to come back!!
