We had a wonderful time staying here, and felt pampered by the lovely rooms and service. The only complaint we had was with the breakfast - it was pretty bad, and the maple syrup was fake, which is a sin to us New Englanders. Everything else was wonderful!

Spent 3 nights here Oct 16-18. Beautifully decorated and well maintained property, oozed ambiance and had the qualities that make historic Bed and Breakfasts like this such a unique experience. Innkeeper was a friendly, wonderfully industrious woman who was also the chef for breakfast and made some very good recommendations for dining at some of her favorite places in town. Breakfasts varied each day with multiple choices and were delicious. Inn was a short drive to Acadia entrance going west and to the main strip in Bar Harbor going east. Laura Blair Room was a historical, tastefully decorated, nice sized area that did not disappoint. Got a nice tour including a safety brief on the step down into the room at check in so it was not a problem. Morning common area (coffee, etc.) adjacent to room might bother late sleepers but we are early risers and always travel with a sleep sound machine so it was not a big deal for us. Glad we chose this beautful place and would stay here again.

This beautiful, historic manor (it is a registered national historic building) is maintained to standards that would satisfy a museum. We felt like it was a special privilege to be allowed to book into the Cleftstone room with its gorgeous wood fireplace and ceilings, sitting and writing areas, and very comfortable bed and bathroom. We checked out the other rooms, and there is a wide range of sizes from very cozy to large suites, so it seems able to accommodate a wide range of tastes and budgets. The common areas are spacious, comfortable and again maintained in museum quality (cruise ship passengers come to tour this historic property). There is an afternoon social hour with light snacks and good breakfasts as well. Great staff, too!

This is a lovely place! It was not difficult to find, however it is hidden by a monstorous hotel behind it! The room that we stayed in was one of the last ones left, so you know that means it was one of the less desireable, however it was still very nice with a seperate sitting room. The owner was just lovely. She made sure you were well taken care of and knew the ins and outs of all the rooms as well as history of the house. The breakfast was spectacular and so was the company.

One of the survivors of the 47 fire this elegant B&B is just far enough up the road to be away from the busy main area of Bar Harbor. Lots of parking, an adjacent spa, quiet, well appointed, modern bathrooms, fantastic breakfasts, attentive service, late afternoon get-togethers a bonus. Will return if we're by this way again.

loved our stay here in October 2013. We had a rather small room, but that was ok. I will say that the noise from the busy road below was a problem. The breakfast however was awesome!! Ann is a great cook/baker/chef The Inn was quaint, beautiful old home on the national historic registry. a social hour later in the day was nice to meet others form different parts of the country and the world. would definitely stay again, just in the back of the house.

The Cleftstone Manor was a very relaxing Inn with a clean and inviting room for us to enjoy. Our host Anne was a very friendly, informative innkeeper. Our breakfasts were delicious and plentiful. The staff was accommodating and pleasant. My wife and I enjoyed our 3 night stay and look forward to returning to Bar Harbor and The Cleftstone Manor.
5 on October 20, 2013
The staff was very helpful in dealing with the Acadia NP shutdown, provided trail maps to hike in. The social hour and sharing a table at breakfast was nice. It was good experience, the rooms were beautiful and it was a good location. I found it to be a excellent value.

We spent 3 nights at the Cleftstone Manor. We enjoyed our room, the breakfast's and the home. Everything worked...which is a plus for an older home. The owner and staff were very nice and helpful. The only caution...carrying luggage to third floor rooms is good exercise.

My wife and I were on a road-trip tour of New England and stopped in Bar Harbor to explore Acadia National Park. We thought the park was closed, but upon check-in at Cleftstone, Ann made sure to tell us where to go and how to access the park. She was a wealth of information about what to do and where to go. The food was fantastic and the room was perfect.

We had a wonderful stay at Cleftstone. Just far enough away from town to escape the hustle yet close enough to be able to enjoy the town nightlife. Just down the road from the main entrance to Acadia. Enjoyed the evening snacks, drinks and conversations with the host. Highly recommended. We'll be back!!
5 on October 13, 2013
We had an awesome stay at Cleftstone. Ann was very helpful with ideas on where to eat in bar harbor and trails to hike Acadia. Breakfast was so yummy. And it was a bonus to be able to use the hot tub and pool at the sister resort next store. We would definitely stay again.

My husband and I enjoyed a 2 night stay at this lovely Inn in early October. Our room, the Joseph Pulitzer, was so nice and the king-sized bed was extremely comfortable. We slept so well that it was really hard to get up and get going. However, the marvelous breakfast awaited us, and this we couldn't resist. Anne and Robert, what a beautiful job you do with breakfast!! It was tasty, filling, and left me full and satisfied until dinner! Everyone we met was friendly, courteous, and helpful. Thanks again, Anne, for sending us off with a delicious sack breakfast the morning we had to leave at 7:30 am. Was delicious, as all your meals. We hope to return to your lovely Inn in the future.

We have stayed here a number of times and it's always great. Charming, beautiful old estate perched on a hillside just before you get to the wharf in Bar Harbor. Close to Acadia National Park entrance. Lovely hosts and great hot gourmet breakfast. A pleasure. We will return.
2.8 on October 07, 2013
We stayed two nights in the Isaac Howe room. The room was fine. The bathroom was separate, but had a private key. This was not horrible, just inconvenient. The bathroom had an odd smell and sink that made a loud noise when you tried to run the hot water. It looks old timey, keeping in with the house, but it does not have great functionality and needs to be updated. The breakfast was good but not amazing. The staff were nice. It is a good B&B for the value, but not my favorite that I have stayed in.
4.4 on October 06, 2013
We really enjoyed our stay here. We specifically reserved the Kebo Valley room to take advantage of the attached sun room at the back. Neither my wife or I had ever traveled to Maine and both Anne and Bob were so helpful to us in providing information about the local area. Breakfast was delicious.

Excellent, comfortable accommodations in a historic inn that has been updated over the years. Our room (Laura Blair) was spacious, bathroom clean an bright, shower was nice. Food was plentiful but each choice for breakfast needed to be made the evening before. Fred MIhalow, Schnecksville, PA

This is definitely a place we will come back to stay. Anne and her staff are service oriented and lovely to work with. The Bruce Price room where we stayed was so comfortable with a lovely sitting area and super comfortable bed and sheets. The breakfasts are yummy and it was really good to spend a little time with other guests at the late afternoon appetizer time. Thank you for making our trip to Bar Harbor special.

We spent a week at Cleftstone Manor after Labor Day and thoroughly enjoyed the stay. The rooms were nicely decorated and very comfortable. The hosts were extremely friendly and accommodating. We especially enjoyed the evening hors d'oeuvres where we met other guests staying at the B&B. The house has an interesting history that made for great conversation with the host and was fun to try to picture life at the house during the 19th century. We highly recommend the Cliftstone Manor B&B.
3.2 on September 17, 2013
Quiet, well appointed inn with quick access to Bar Harbor and Acadia. We stayed in Cleftstone Room which is a romantic and roomy accommodation on the first floor. Comfortable bed, ensuite bathroom (nothing special), working fireplace (wax log provided each nite) and plenty of seating and clothes storage. There is a daily happy hour (bring your own if you want something stronger than tea or lemonade). The owner is adamant about making your breakfast choice the night before. I wouldn't consider the choices or quality all that unusual or special. Coffee was ok. The innkeeper (Anne) is a lifelong B&B operator whose spouse operates the White Columns Inn near downtown BH. As such she treats this more like a business than a passion so I came away with a "been there done that" feeling which was really msnifested during breakfast where the servers were hired help that just went thru the motions. Efficient but not warm or particularly service oriented. We did meet interesting and friendly guests at both gatherings. If not, I don't think our stay would have been as pleasant. Would we return? I don't know...

We had a very nice stay at the Clefstone Manor! It is a beautiful inn, prettier in person than the pictures on the web show. The staff is just fantastic and very friendly. Breakfast was superb every day. We were given two choices everyday for the breakfast entrees and both sounded delicious, it was hard to decide. We were on the third floor, and our room was beautiful, but getting to it is not for the larger or unfit person. But we loved our stay and would highly recommend it to everyone.

4.8 on September 06, 2013
Cleftstone gives you a bit of the feeling of what it was like to "summer" in Bar Harbor back around 1900. The place has a rambly, informal feel that comes from being a house that was expanded in several phases. Both breakfast and "happy hour' are times when you can get to meet your fellow lodgers and share experiences.

Great bed and breakfast! Owner was very knowledgeable about the home, and enjoyed spending time with guests and sharing information. Room was very clean, and breakfast was fantastic.

We booked the Frank Ellis room on the third floor. It looked small in the photo but was actually larger in person with a decent sized private bath with shower. It was fine for what we needed. The bed was firm which took a night to get used too. It has a small flat screen TV with many channels although we only used it our first night there. Acadia National Park is very close and provided most of our entertainment. Bar Harbor shopping is 2 minutes away by car. We found the inn to be very quite..very little road noise since it sits above Rte 3. Never heard any other guests which made sleeping peaceful. Anne puts on a wonderful and delicious breakfast every morning and has a social hour in the early evening with appetizers and refreshments. Nice when you arrive late in the afternoon after a long drive. We found her to be very helpful in giving us tips on dining and other areas to visit. She recommended a new restaurant called Opa's which was very good. Well worth the visit! Our next stay will be in the John Clark which is a bigger room with a balcony and full bath. A beautiful room. Overall we had a pleasant stay fot a reasonable price.

When we arrived, I was a little skeptical when we were led to our room, which was behind the kitchen and breakfast area. But to my delight, found a lovely large room that had it's own private porch and outside entrance. The innkeeper had appetizers and wine out for the guests in the afternoon on the sun porch, and this is where we met some of the other guests. I would revisit this lovely inn.

We stayed in the "Cleffstone" room which is quite beautiful and large with a canopied bed, sitting area with sofa and chairs, fireplace a d desk area. The king bed was very comfortable. The breakfasts where delicious and the late afternoon cocktail hour was very enjoyable. Highly recommended.

We stayed three nights at the B&B. It was wonderful to get away from the busy downtown of bar harbor, but close enough we could pop back and forth between bar harbor and the acadia national park easily. It was very clean and staff was friendly. It was a wonderful vacation!

Amazing innkeeper Ann made sure that every need was catered to. Spacious room (Waldron Bates suite) was very private, with enough room for 3 of us. Breakfasts were superb, with fresh-baked breads daily. Cocktail hr. (BYOB) offered yummy gourmet h'or d'ouvres and a convivial setting. Use of pool (indoor and outdoor), jacuzzi and sauna was an extra special bonus and a great way to end our day. Ann and her staff of two wonderful women (who both serve breakfast and do housekeeping) made sure our needs were met. Setting is near town---a decent walk, or take the local free bus to the Village Green. The inn was full (16 rooms) but never felt crowded or busy. I have found my place to stay in future years.
4.6 on August 15, 2013
What a treat from sun up scrumptious breakfast to sundown recommendations for dinner! Location is prime to walk to town and take in an art show or shopping, and leave the parking challnges for others! The owners host you as if you were family and there was never a wait for service of any kind. We'll be back, from Hawaii, to enjoy many more breakfast treats at Clefstone Manor.
5 on August 13, 2013
Cleftstone Manor is a fantastic historic inn. Breakfasts were of great fresh quality and varied every day with some standards in case variety is not your thing. Rooms were immaculate and the furnishings and interior decor was beautiful. Afternoon nibbles were always good and varied as well. We look forward to our next stay.

Normally we would not post a less than complimentary review. However, although Cleftstone may once have been grand, it's size and age are now showing the difficulties of keeping up with maintenance, not only with the inside finishes, but also in the quality of such items as bed linens which were worn and pilled. It's location is outside of town enough that it is not a convenient walk into Bar Harbor. The Inn has no grounds to speak of, but rather is accessed by a driveway off a busy road that continues up to another very large hotel complex, giving the place very little intimacy. If the owners were present, we were not aware of them. Our room was large, but with a bathroom across a hall. That was ok except that it was old and with an inadequate tub/shower situation that we really couldn't use. The staff we did encounter was pleasant and the breakfast tasty. Cleftstone just needs some TLC and a friendlier atmosphere.

Cleftstone Manor was to be the highlight of our trip to Maine. The pictures showed it in a better light than it was. Granted, the room WAS big. The patio, however, looked onto a busy road, and joined with numerous other rooms. The overall feel of the place was tired. Chairs in the room were warn, as was the bedding. Staff was not friendly, but knowledgeable about tours to take and restaurants. Blueberry pancakes were yummy in the morning....If I was to give a couple of "heads up" to prospective guests to the beautiful Bar Harbor area, it would be book early, and ask about the surroundings. A place within walking distance to town would have been nice.

Enjoyed the breakfast meals! When staying here, be sure to request the audio tour of the island, it is very informative and helpful when doing a self-guided tour.

My wife and I just came back from Bar Harbor Maine. We stayed at the Cleftstone Manor and it was really enjoyable. We had stayed there last year and enjoyed it so much we stayed again. We were originally booked for a certain room but due to unforeseeable circumstances(heavy rain prior to our arrival) we were unable to stay in that room. The inn was so apologetic and even upgraded our stay to a different room with no extra charge. The second room was beautiful and newly renovated. This bed and breakfast has changed our whole view for hotels and probably will not return to a hotel for vacations. The breakfasts were incredible. Very filling and well presented. We didn't even feel hungry till late afternoon. The whole staff at the Cleftstone are hospitable , polite, very friendly. They know how to treat their guests. Would recommend this Inn for anyone who wants quiet, tranquility an maybe even a piece of history. Can't wait for our next vacation to Bar Harbor. I know where we will stay again. Our seventh stay at Cleftstone started out with an issue, The a/c didn't work. It was the first hot day of the year and something was broken inside the unit. They immediately installed a new window unit which kept the room comfortable. The breakfasts in particular the red pepper quiche are fantastic. The rooms are well decorated with a good blend of antiques and reproductions. The hosts Ann and Bob are cordial and very knowledgable about the area. Check out Bob on the piano at the Bar Harbor Inn - he's excellect. We will be back again when we can. JBT/BST

We've stayed at many B&B's, I would rate this inn as 'nice'. What I liked - great location, it was clean, social time with munchies, pool is terrific, breakfast was delicious. What I didn't like - the air conditioning on the main floor and dining room was not working well, we had to eat and leave because it was so hot. We had to pay $1 for bottles of water, most places we've stayed give you water. Innkeeper was interesting, friendly at times and then would sort of ignore you. hard to figure out. all in all, I'd give it a B-.

This was a return trip to Cleftstone. The new owners have kept up the excellent service and the condition of the manor. All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The breakfast was delicious and they accomodated my gluten-free needs. We will visit again in the future.

My wife and I stayed here as newlyweds. We found this B&B to be quite comfortable and charming. It is the only place on that side of the street that survived the fire of 47. It has great history. The rooms were kept very clean and there seemed to be an abundance of assistance in the form of a small book with information about restaurants, the Inn's private collection of movies, as well as shared accommodations with the Bluenose that allow for use of their fitness area, pool and hot tub. The social/tea time held every evening was also enjoyable as we were able to have a bit of social interaction, and then get on with our honeymoon downtown. Some of the restaurants downtown take walk-ins, others have long waits or require reservations. The Inn provided a list of restaurants and whether or not a reservation is required or recommended for each location. The food prepared at the Cleftstone was tasty and home-cooked. We had delicious filling 3-course breakfasts both days and enjoyed the foods served during the social hour. We may try and stay here again next time we go to Bar Harbor, but as it was our first time, we may also try another location. Then ultimately got back to the Cleftstone. We also had some great friendly conversation with the owner/hostess.

Anne and her inn-keeping staff were very friendly and service oriented. They kept our rooms very clean. Rooms were nicely decorated. Nice happy hour/snacks in the late afternoon. We enjoyed sitting in front of the fireplace in the main room at night. The breakfasts prepared were extraordinary! Great choices each morning. Well prepared. We didn't have a bad breakfast. I don't have enough good things to say about the Cleftstone: peerless hospitality, lovely rooms, wonderful breakfasts, and great location! Be aware of the following facts, and you won't be surprised upon arrival: 1) the house sits above the main "strip" into town, and depending on where your room is, you might hear traffic noise from the road below. 2) Similarly, the house is situated across the road from the College of the Atlantic, so depending on the time of year, you may experience some noise from college kids frolicking on their lawn. 3) It's about a 20-minute walk to the harbor area/town proper. Love this place - would return again in a heartbeat, and recommend it to anyone. It's got the intimate, historical, homelike feel of a bed & breakfast, without feeling as though you're staying at your aunt's house - plenty of room for privacy and anonymity.

This Autumn we returned to Maine as part of a seven week journey. We looked forward to reaching Acadia National Park and hopefully returning to Cleftstone Manor. We had stayed at Cleftstone Manor four years ago and had a great stay at that time. Staying at Cleftstone Manor is special event. The proprietor makes one feel at home with conversation and a tasty happy hour each afternoon. Breakfast each day is wonderful--gourmet type food. The mood is so comfortable that it is hard to leave. One terrific feature is the location which places you within a few minutes of downtown Bar Harbor and the entrance to Acadia National Park.

Social hour every evening was extremely nice - good company to visit with, great snacks provided - bring your own bottle of wine and enjoy an hour or two before going out for dinner.

First time staying at a Bed and Breakfast and I must say it was well worth it. We had a fantastic stay. The food was absolutely wonderful. I figured the breakfast would be mediocre but I was dead wrong. It was fabulous as well as large portions. Ann, the owner was also very helpful. with recommendations for things to do and places to eat.

Thanks so much to Anne and her staff for a very comfortable and welcoming stay!

We very much enjoyed are stay this year in Bar Harbor and would recomend the Cleftstone Manner to anyone looking for a upscaled, clean and wonderful breakfast to boot. It is close to town and a grat location to drive to Acadia National Park.

The rooms were very clean, comfortable and beautifully decorated. The breakfasts were huge, delicious, and different each day. The service and friendliness was great. My husband & I were very pleased with our 3 night stay, and would highly recommend this place. The evening "cocktail" hour snacks were tasty, and provided a chance to relax and chat with the owner and other guests. We had a wonderful weekend!

This was our second time staying here. We came back because of the very well prepared and nicely served breakfast, as well as the charming and roominess of the place. The evening appetizers and openness of the Manor. If and when we are able return to Bar Harbor, we will stay here once more.
4.6 on October 20, 2012
Our room was large and beautifully appointed. The staff was friendly and the evening snacks were great, along with sun porch for visiting.
4.2 on October 18, 2012
Wonderful breakfasts and a great variety of rooms. The Cleftstone is not located in the downtown area but is only a quick 10-minute walk. So, if you like being in the middle of the action . . . well, as much action as there is in Bar Harbor . . . this may not be the place for you. But other than that, this inn is a great place to stay. And only a few minutes from the Acadia loop road. Did I mention the wonderful breakfasts? The menu changes daily and each entree is fantastic.

Had a wonderful two day stay. Easy walk to town for dinner and close to the park trails. Staff were great, service perfect.

Great hospitality! Anyone visiting Bar Harbor should spend some time at the Cleftstone Manor.

This was my first experience with a B&B and I was extremely pleased. My daughter, who traveled with me, had stayed in B&B's previously and enjoyed them, so we made the decision to stay in B&B's on this trip. We were both very impressed with Cleftstone Manor. Staff were extremely pleasant, the food was wonderful, and overall it was a wonderful experience. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a place to stay in Bar Harbor.

Very nice historic inn in Bar Harbor. Owner provides late afternoon snacks that are freshly made and taste great. Beds are very comfortable. Location is very convienent. Rooms are very pleasant. Some are bigger than others. I would have no problem staying there again.

Had a nice stay at the Clefstone over two nights. In Bar Harbor the Cleftstones was a good option; you have to drive in within a few minutes and it is very close to the Acadia National Park. The Cleftstone has nice and clean rooms but definitely is an old building. The breakfast was ok and it's a lot of food.
4.2 on October 02, 2012
My wife and I stayed at Cleftstone for 4 wonderful days in Bar Harbor. The owners, Ann and Bob, have a beautiful old home that was a pleasure to stay in. The breakfasts were a 10 out of 10, the service was exceptional and the rooms were clean and well appointed. The location is so convenient to both Acadia National Park (right next door) and downtown Bar Harbor. It's a beautiful island and we would recommend Cleftstone to our friends without hesitation.

Cleftstone Manor is a real gem! I looked for the "perfect" B&B to celebrate the 25th anniversary with my husband. When you trust a website, verses personal recommendations from friends, it can feel like a risk. However, there was NO risk with Cleftstone Manor. From the minute we walked in the door and met Cheryl and received our tour of the fabulous estate to meeting Ann and Bob the Inn Owners we couldn't have been more pleased. We absolutely loved the Bruce Price room. The sherry and chocolates were such a wonderful touch. The electric fire place and wonderfully comfortable bed were so nice after full days of touring Acadia and Bar Harbor (which is all within 3 or so miles from the Inn). We took advantage of the Romantic Package and not only did we have a wonderful tour of the waterways, but the picnic lunch with champagne that Ann packed for us was great. We've stayed at many B&Bs. This was our 3rd one just this year. A wonderful treat and unique treat was Ann spending the afternoon appetizer and drink hour with the guests. Ann made wonderful treats and shared time with all of us - making us feel family not just guests. After just 4 nights, it feel nature to hug Ann "Goodbye" until we see her and Bob again. A wonderful 25th Anniversary for us. Thanks to Ann and Bob!!

Outstanding rooms in a victorian style comfort. Helpful owner who takes care that every one feels important. Hearthy as well as creative breakfast. One of the most beautiful B&B we've been close to Fundy Bay. Close enough to the action, yet very peaceful

Very classical style rooms, great food, will come back again

Spent 3 nights. Ann, the owner, was very gracious and could answer any question we had about Bar Harbor. The food was excellent. The rooms were very clean and quite quaint. The staff was also very accomadating. If you want a great experience try the Clefstone

This is a very clean and comfortable B&B with good warm breakfast, evening appetizer. No regrets here. Close to local restaurants & town.

We chose Clefstone Manor as our honeymoon getaway for four nights in Bar Harbor. The place was beautiful, and had nice touches like the sherry and chocolates in our room. We had chosen the room because of the fire place (which burns self-lighting logs, which they give you), and were delightedly surprised by the appetizers in the afternoon. We were by far the youngest people staying there (we're in our 30s) so we did not meet a lot of people at the appetizers/cocktail hour, but it was lovely nonetheless. We would recommend this place to anyone. Lovely.

I sincerely enjoyed my stay at Cleftstone manor. The owner was very welcoming and helpful on selecting a spot for dinner. Breakfast was delicious. I wish I didn't have to leave!

Such an interesting house, great hosts, lovely big breakfast, enjoyed the early evening receptions to meet others and enjoyed the appetizers provided. Great atmosphere! Lots to do in the area. We will be back!

The inn is located just outside of the downtown blocks, which isn't a bad thing, as the crowds downtown can be stressful. It's a beautiful old building. Like many historic buildings though, the systems (electrical, plus there is no central HVAC) could use some upgrading. This wasn't a big problem though. The bathroom had been tastefully updated with quality appointments. A sofa in the room was kind of dirty. Of course, this is largely due to the prior guests, and you can't launder a sofa. Still I wished that had been cleaned somehow. Breakfast was included and served in a nice breakfast room by cheerful and efficient staff. There was a choice of two main breakfast items each day, and they were varied daily. The menu was tastefully chosen and prepared and certainly was above the standard for breakfast included with lodging. I quite enjoyed that and it conserved time and was more comfortable to simply walk down the hall to get breakfast than it would have been to drive to a place and then possibly wait in line every morning All in all I enjoyed my stay there and though it wasn't cheap, it offered a square deal in the prevailing market for accomodations in Bar Harbor.
4.8 on September 06, 2012
I enjoyed my stay at Cleftstone. I staff was very friendly and accomodating, the food was excellent and the rooms were spacious. There is also cocktail hour from 5:30-6:30pm were hor dourves are served and the ower, Anne, comes out to talk to the guests. It is about 5 minutes from Bar Harbor. The road it a little busy, but other than that is was a nice area. There is a bus stop at the college across the street that will take you into town for free. I would definitely recommned this B&B for anyone looking for a nice, relaxing place to stay near Bar Harbor.

We stayed at Cleftstone over the Labor Day wkend and it was a wonderful experience. When we reserved two rooms all that was available at the time were smaller bedrooms on the third floor which met our expectations and were very clean and comfortable. The inn itself was lovely...we enjoyed sitting in the living room one evening and another evening visited with Ann during the cocktail hour in the sunroom. The breakfast room was bright and cheery, the breakfasts were so delicious, presented impeccably, and the waitstaff was as pleasant as could be. The inn was within a mile or so of downtown Bar Harbor so it was very convenient. Ann and her husband do a wonderful job. We would not hesitate to stay there again...and of course the views in Acadia National Park are spectacular.
5 on September 04, 2012
We had a wonderful time at the Cleftstone. Anne was so helpful in finding places, making reservations at restaurants that are hard to get and making the most delicious breakfast. What is nice is she asks the night before that way you know there will be enough for all visitors. And she has side items. The place was clean easy to find and centrally located. When we are up there again we will stay with her.
4.6 on September 04, 2012
Anne is just a great host. I told them that the service and the food was as good as I have ever had at any restaurant. Great location and even though I did not take advantage of the pool we did have access to the one at the Bluenose Inn. We had a room with a detached bath but the price reflected that. Really a 'First Class' stay.
3.4 on September 04, 2012
we stayed in 2 rooms, the first was fine. although, i expected a better mattress and much better bed linens. the second room was below par. the windows faced the parking and entrance to another establishment. so, they could not be opened without street noise. when we turned on the air conditioner, it sounded like a jet engine taking off! we could not use it. the mirror in the bathroom was discolored, making it difficult to use, could not see. as with the first room, the mattress and linens were below par. glad we only had one nite in this room. with the above being said, the staff and owner were very welcoming. the food was great! the location was convenient.

Had a nice stay at the Clefstone -- two rooms over two nights. The staff was exceptional, the breakfast was great, and the rooms were as pictured. However, I couldn't get hot water in the bathroom while staying in one of the rooms in the third floor.

We stayed only one night in Bar Harbor and this B and B was a good option. It's not right in the town but there is a trolly loop that's nice or you can drive in within a few minutes. The room was nice and clean. The bathroom was large compared to a lot of B and B's. The water pressure was ok although the shower nozzel had seen better days.. The decor and style are not to my taste. It's very "grandmaish" if you will. The wall paper and carpet are just too busy for me. They actually clash on the second floor. The towel racks don't match in the bathroom. It's little things like that. The common areas are nice and there is a social hour in the afternoons. The breaktast was good and it's a lot of food. It's certainly an option if you stay in Bar Harbor.

Anne & Bob are very helpful, friendly, & easily accessible. The Cleftstone is relaxing, comfortable, & convenient to Bar Harbor restaurants & shops & to Acadia. The food was plentiful & yummy! Wi-fi service was not dependable, but we didn't really need it. We would stay here again!

4.6 on August 27, 2012
We stayed in the Reginald deKoven room which was nice because there was only a room on one side of it. That being said, for an old home it was quiet! The breakfast was superb, the accomodations very comfortable, and the service was fantastic! You can tell everyone there takes pride in their work, it shows in the way the guests are treated. I definitely would stay here again and recommend it to anyone I know.
3.6 on August 27, 2012
The combination of the intimacy of a B & B combined with the amenities of a 4 star hotel is outstanding. I would definitely stay here again. However, I thought the front desk manager was not very friendly. She met our requests, but I always felt like it was an inconvenience to do her job.

We had a wonderful time at Cleftstone on our Honeymoon! The room we stayed in (The Cleftstone) was beautiful, the pictures don't do it justice. It was very romantic and beautifully decorated. The staff and owners are all extremely friendly and helpful making sure everyone was comfortable. The breakfast was excellent every morning, great options and always extremely fresh and filling! I would stay again, it was a beautiful place and everyone made you feel very welcome!

We spent the first two days of our Bar Harbor vacation at another B&B that exceeded our expectations in every way so when we checked into Cleftstone Manor the owners had a hard act to follow.....and overall we were very satisfied with the service and our room.....and delighted with the food. The breakfasts were truly outstanding and the snacks at tea just delicious...and very generous portions! Ann is an outstanding chef and a good host. We felt welcome. We rented the Woodbury Park room which is one of the four superior rooms offered. It was advertised with a "private balcony" which turned out to be two plastic chairs sitting on a wood platform (looked like a large pallet) that sat on the roof....the roof area had rotten timber in some spots and overall was not a place where one would want to sit and enjoy a drink.....nor was there any view to enjoy. The private balcony was one of the reasons I rented this room so I was disappointed. I said earlier the food was outstanding and it was. One small improvement would be to provide HOT coffee in the Abbe room before breakfast. Although coffee was provided it looked like a hot pot was mixed with left over coffee from the night before which made the early morning cup cool and non enjoyable. The second area that was less than satisfactory was the outside of the building...it looked very tired. Overall our stay was satisfactory and if you're looking for outstanding food I would highly recommend staying.

Celebrated with my twin brother our 60th birthday at the Manor. Proprietress Ann was terrific, she was right on in her recommendations for local dinning, and is an EXCELLENT breakfast chef. We felt at home, just as John D. Rockefeller did when he stayed here many years ago. I WILL stay here again, trust me.

Charming Victorian atmosphere. Afternoon social hour was an unexpected treat. Breakfasts were different each of our three day stay and were delicious! Host, Anne was very accommodating.
4.4 on August 21, 2012
The inn is an old victorian style building, with lovely sitting areas, great porch and well appointed rooms. It's about a mile from the busy Bar Harbor stores and restaurants, so it is away from the hubbub. It is on the main road, so we didn't keep our windows open at night. The breakfasts were excellent - always included fruit and juice, and a choice of a higher protein dish, or more carb oriented. Anne is a friendly, helpful and down to earth inn keeper. If we go go the area again, we would look forward to staying at the inn.
5 on August 20, 2012
Quaint lodging in a great location. You could take a quick drive into town or the Park, or walk or ride your bike to either as well. All the people were very friendly & helpful, making for a nice stay. Breakfast was nice and you had a couple of choices.
4.6 on August 20, 2012
Accommodations were great and the hospitality of our hosts was outstanding. The ambiance, decor, and cleanliness of the whole Manor (and our room) were outstanding. The afternoon "happy hour" of networking and hors d'oeuvres gave us a chance to meet new friends and have interesting conversations with other guests.
4.4 on August 20, 2012
Anne was very helpful in helping us enjoy Bar Harbor, her food was excellent and the evening snacks were tasty and the conversation interesting. The room needed better A/C - it was a bit damp and musty, could use new sheets. The staff kept the room clean and we enjoyed the treats they left. Anne works hard to make your stay pleasant. Thanks!

My two daughters and I recently stayed at Clefstone Manor and enjoyed it very much. The room was very cozy and inviting and a wonderful place to relax after a busy day. The breakfasts are quite delicious and filling. We also enjoyed the afternoon hors d'oeuvres, and chatting with other guests. It is clear that Anne enjoys cooking delicious food for her guests. We would highly recommend this B & B!

My husband and I stayed at the Cleftstone Manor in Bar Harbor for our honeymoon and were not disappointed. Our room was spacious and meticiously clean. Anne, the owner and chef, makes such creative and delicious breakfasts that Im worried my husband will be disappointed when I'm the one cooking! The staff was friendly and very accomodating. We will, and have, recommend the Cleftstone to anyone wanting a peaceful, beautiful stay at a reasonable price. Emily and Marty Schmitt Rochester, NY

3.0 on August 14, 2012
We recently visited Bar Harbor and other coast villages of Maine and found the Cleftstone Manor to be more like a hotel and less like a B&B. There are many rooms here and things were just OK. If I were to go back to Bar Harbor I think I would find another B&B to check out. The breakfasts were good and Ann was very nice. Compared to the three other B&Bs we stayed at while along the coast this one was our least favorite. Also, I had many problems with the Wi-Fi working in the room I was staying in. Overall a fine place to stay, but I would try others before going back to Cleftstone Manor.
5 on August 13, 2012
Our stay at Cleftstone Manor exceeded our expectations. The owner, Ann, and her staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. We stayed in the John Clark room, which was beautiful. One of the things that impressed us the most was the delicious three-course breakfast that was served in the dining room every morning- a wonderful bonus to our stay! We also enjoyed access to the pool at the in next door, and taking a dip in the morning was a nice treat. We parked our car in the Inn parking lot the day we arrived and then never moved it throughout our stay- the shuttle stopped right across the street but we ended up enjoying the short walk to town more often than not. All in all, the value that you get for your money here is fantastic and we can't wait to go back!

My husband and I stayed at Cleftstone Manner for 6 nights in late July 2012, and we loved everything about it! Ann, the owner, was a wonderful hostess and very attentive to our needs, not to mention a great cook. We stayed in the Pulitzer and loved our private entrance, and small outdoor sitting area. The room was very spacious, and very comfortable. We are early risers, so we're not bothered at all about the kitchen being beside our room, never found it to be a problem. Had to use the stairs to get into the tall bed, lol, but I am short. Bed was very comfy with nice soft sheets and plenty of pillows. Also enjoyed the free wifi in the room, and ability to store snack, lunch food in the small refridg in the front office area. All of the staff were extremely courteous, friendly, and helpful. Great location, a little walk to downtown Bar Harbor, or bus ride is available. We also took advantage of the pool accommodations both indoor and outdoor at the Blue Nose Inn which is right next door, this was a nice benefit, very swanky place and we had the pool to ourselves most times. Can't say enough about this great little spot, quaint and convenient, nice people, great accommodations, great food, and of course the best of Bar Harbor right at your door. We highly recommeend, and will definitely plan to go back!

Highly recommend a stay at Cleftstone Manor!

The Inn was beautiful, Ann was quite the host! We had a lovely room on the 3rd floor, with gifts from Fiore, and complementary sherry and Ferrero Rocher. Breakfast was divine. Our only issue was that even though it was air conditioned, and they so kindly provided a fan, it was still a tad warm up there.

Cleftstone is a first-class B&B. The owner is friendly and makes her guests feel as if they are family. We loved the breakfasts, but also the appetizer get-togethers in the late afternoon. We got to meet so many lovely folks this way. We would go back in a moment.
4.4 on August 01, 2012
It was such a great experience. We got there after 8:00pm and we faced the notes and the key. I loved the whole mansion. Our room I guess was the smallest one with a bathroom outside. It was not the ideal case, but it was ok. I think if we could go there off season, the prices would be more reasonable. The most amazing part of this B&B was their breakfast. It was fresh and delicious. The staff were really friendly. During our breakfast one of them came to our table and gave us some hints to where to go and what to do. They made my first experience of B&B such a memorable time!
2.8 on July 30, 2012
We stayed at Cleftstone for two nights, and while there isn't anything terrible to say about the Inn, we felt it was somewhat lackluster. It was pleasant, but not memorable. The breakfasts were delicious. We were in The John Clark room. It was nice, but there was a lot of wear and tear showing in the bath towels and couch, and a spider web (complete with spider) in the bath tub. Our biggest issue was the lighting in the room. The french doors, which afford a beautiful view, are covered with a set of thin metal blinds, which are bent and ragged. They do not block any light in the morning, so the sunlight streams right onto the bed at about 5:45 A.M. There is a broken set of blinds on one other window, and no blinds on the third window. The bed is super soft, and dips a bit toward the center. Now, I love historic Inns and everything that is unique about them. We were not offered any information about the house, which was fine, but mildly disappointing. It just felt like there was not a lot of pride in the property, and that everyone was just trying to get through the day. The Innkeeper was helpful with suggestions on what to do. When we checked out, nobody asked how our stay was, or if everything was ok. I felt like I paid for a top notch Inn, but I got mediocrity with a few embellishments.

We loved our stay at Cleftstone Manor! Everything exceeded our expectations. The breakfasts were delicious and the rooms were comfortable. The commons areas are beautiful. We loved the perfect location; it was right outside of town, taking only a minute to drive downtown. The only issue we had was with the hot water for showers. Several times during a shower, the water would get cold. But it would get hot again immediately, so it wasn't a big deal. Anne was extremely helpful. She didn't mind all our questions about restaurants and activities in Acadia. She offered us great suggestions. If we ever return to Bar Harbor, this is where we plan to stay.

I would have given everything 5 stars, except that our bed was very uncomfortable. The room was nicely decorated with a beautiful oak bed and dresser. There were side chairs and a love seat. The breakfasts are wonderful. It is located close enough to town to walk to everything. Overall, we had a very enjoyable stay.

My wife and I stayed at Clefstone Manor while visiting Bar Harbor, ME and Acadia National Park. We loved the place! We got a king size bed, complimentary Cherry liqueur with chocolates, breakfast, and hors d'oeuvre in the evening. The breakfast was always amazing, I can't stress that enough. My wife and I can say nothing but good things about their breakfast. Only issue we had was the bathroom with the tub is directly by the dining area and kitchen. The sound from the people working in the kitchen fills the bathroom. The hot tub did not work the first night and we forgot to mention to Anne till the last night we were there. She tried to get a plumber to look into it but it was too late. I was really pleased when we were checking out and she said she reduced our price for the 3 nights we stayed because of the tub. That's excellent service for you! I would recommmend this place to a friend for sure. Once again, breakfast alone was the higlight of our stay.

My daughter and I stayed in the Cleftstone Room for two nights at the end of June and everything was wonderful! The room was so spacious and comfortable, very comfortable bed, welcoming chocolates on the dresser, great water pressure/temperature in the shower. We liked being away from the center of town, it was more peaceful and just a short drive. Delicious breakfasts and yummy afternoon "happy hour" snacks (BYOB). Tea and coffee were available throughout the day, lots of thoughtful touches to make you feel right at home. Anne gave us great recommendations for dinner. Huge selection of DVDs available to watch movies at night, which we actually did one night after whale watching (sadly, no whales). Bottled water and snacks available for purchase at front desk, as well as a small fridge where you could keep your leftovers from dinner. The house is beautiful and so well maintained, and all of the staff we met were very friendly and helpful. This is an ideal place to stay if you don't want to be in the middle of the traffic jams and noise downtown. You can even use the pool next door. I highly recommend Cleftstone Manor, you're sure to have a delightful and satisfying visit!

Crossing Eden St, can be challenging on a holiday week, but the shuttle picks you up right across the street from the B&B, making it simple to get into town if you don't want to walk the half mile. B&B staff were very nice and helpful when asked recommendations. Went to one of the restuarants that Anne had a menu for, and it was outstanding!!!

My mom and Ii were making an East coast vacation trip. Bar Harbor was our northern most point. Clefstone Manor was just a it is pictured in their website. The host and hostess were wonderul. Breakfast was fantastic and the evening meet and greet was quite nice. Our room was quiet and restful. We were in the Kebo Valley room. My mom comment and the only negative we had was that there was very little place in the bathroom to put your toiletries. The town of Bar Harbor is a jewl that I would return to in a heartbeat!

Our room looked exactly like the pictures, and every day they cleaned the room and our bath room. Anne's breakfasts were amazing along with her appetizers. The restaurants that she recommend were perfect every night. Anne also had all the information for hiking around Acadia Nstional Park, guided cruises, and much much more!! We would recommend this to any couple!!!!

We appreciated the welcome atmosphere (hosts and guests included) and uniqueness of the manor and its rooms. The manor was clean and close to downtown, within walking distance. The breakfasts and evening appetizers were delicious! Ann and Bob were wonderful hosts and offered information about Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park at every turn. We will go back to Cleftstone the next time we visit Maine. Thank you.

We had a wonderful stay for three nights. Everyone was very nice and the morning breakfast was out of this world. We had a great server each morning and we even took her picture and got her name for our scrapbook. It was close to everything downtown. The room was clean and neat every day. We stayed in Kebo Valley room over Memorial Day weekend, our first visit to Acadia. We were very satisfied with our room, breakfast, and afternoon snacks. We enjoyed having access to the pool next door at the Blue Nose. The common rooms were comfortable and inviting. Anne was a gracious and helpful hostess. If we ever return to Acadia and Bar Harbor we would definitely stay at Cleftstone Manor again. Carolyn Oro Valley, AZ

You can't go wrong in staying at the Cleftstone Manor. Every detail has been anticipated and exceeded. Anne and Bob Bahr are wonderful innkeepers who provide a scrumptious breakfast every morning and great information about Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. The room was lovely, the food was great, the inkeepers were terrific, the place was very clean and well appointed. The location was perfect, close enough to town to be convenient to everything, but far enough to be away from the hustle and bustle when you want your privacy and peace. Can't say enough good things about this B&B. Will be back for sure.

A beautiully classic B&B! Ocean views from some rooms, and the breakfast were a delicious treat. Our room had a fireplace and a four poster bed,and was quiet and very clean.Sweetly decorated, and the hosts were friendly and gracious. Can't wait to return!

Clefstone Manor is not only a wonderful B&B, it contains within it’s walls the history of Bar Harbor and the many summer homes that grace the landscape of this charming town. Our stay was so comfortable and the owners shared the wonderful history of the original owner as well as the history of the property and how it has changed over the years. From the delightful breakfasts laced with local blueberries and fresh fruits to the relaxing gardens and evening appetizers, the welcoming warmth of this B&B is one we will remember fondly and look forward to returning to in the years ahead.

Overall, our one night stay was very comfortable. The room was wonderful (when we arrived we had been upgraded which was nice). The breakfast was very good as well. The only thing that was unpleasant was the service we received. The "owner" or front desk receptionist was not welcoming at all and completely unfriendly. We were disappointed about that but other than that it was a nice place to stay in.

Beautiful manor, rich with history. Yet, so cozy, warm and inviting. The owners are very friendly and helpful and the breakfasts are delightful. The rooms are pretty, and cozy. Great bed to snuggle in after those long hikes in Acadia. No question, a great stay at an awesome location. We will definitely be back! Thank you!! Monika & Adam

We had a perfectly lovely time at the Cleftstone. Our room (John Clark) was very comfortable and I loved the fireplace. We would enjoy going again. The entire Manor is beautiful, cozy. Just what I wanted. My only critique was the breakfast. The food was delicious. What I want to say is not a fault of the Manor but rather my preference. For breakfast, I wished we had sat in the dining room with others at the large table and had an opportunity to chat with other guests: family style, or boarding house style. The dining room is gorgeous and beckoned to me of such a dining style. As it was we sat at individual tables in the kitchen/adjacent room.

The breakfasts were great! The Inn is conveniently located only a couple minutes from Bar Harbor shops and restaurants, by car. We had one of the smaller rooms with a detached bath. Fortunately, the Inn provided robes so that you didn't need to dress just to use the bathroom. The TV in the room was small and situated on a table near the foot of the bed. The height of the table was too low in relation to the height of the bed for easy viewing from bed. If you wanted to watch TV from the sitting area, you had to move the table and turn the TV about 120 degrees. Perhaps a flat screen TV mounted on the door jamb between the bedroom and the sitting area would allow the TV to be viewed from both areas by just turning the screen. A small, very small inconvenience and would not keep us from staying at Clefstone Manor in the same room in the future.

Everything was amazing. Thanks!

The pictures online do not do this place justice. We were a little apprehensive but our room was very nice and had a working fireplace! The price was very reasonable and the food and service of the morning staff was great. They had a nice cocktail hour (BYOB) downstairs every evening which gave people the oppertunity to be social and get to know the other guests. Participation is not mandatory, but it was quite enjoyable to talk and learn about the others staying there and where they were from. The only slighty strange thing about this place is the innkeeper. Oddly, she is very nice and personable in the evening and morning, but if you encounter her in the middle of the day she is not as friendly. Its a small thing, but my husband and I certainly noticed it. I would suggest not to take it personally. Other than that, the place is really great!

My husband and I were here for 4 days to see fall colors. It rained most of the time, but we were ready for it. Everyday we can home about 4 and Ann had a roaring fire going. Just what we needed to take our chill off. At 5;30 headed to the sitting room for a happy/social hour. We met some great people and had wonderful conversations. In the morning, breakfast, well you are in for a hugh treat. They were outstanding. Looking forward to a return visit.

We stayed at Cleftstone Manor for a week in the middle of September and it was another wonderful stay. Ann and Bob the innkeepers are wonderful people who run a beautiful B&B they serve a fantastic breakfast and it is a great place to stay. The rooms are well appointed and reflect the character of when the place was built. I had only two problems with the room, the bed is too high and too soft for me, but that is a personal preference. All in all a great place to stay, we look forward to returning.

Cleftstone Manor was a wonderful place to stay! The inkeepers were helpful regarding help learning the area as well as questions about the home. They were particularly helpful with my gluten free diet and served me beautiful and tasty breakfasts, and were pleased to meet the acomodation. Should we ever be in the area, we most likely would return to Cleftstone.

Outstanding and varied breakfasts were the highlight of our stay. Food and service were outstanding. Room was nice but claw tub in bathroom was hard to get into, considering I have a bad knee and my wife had sprained her back a few days before we went on vacation.
2.8 on September 20, 2011
This inn is nicely located close to both the town and the park. The innkeeper tries hard to provide good service. The rooms were nicely appointed but need new carpeting. The afternoon wine and cheese/hor de'ourves was a nice touch. If a cruise ship is in town, then bus loads of passengers take tours of the inn, I thought this was inappropriate.
3.8 on September 18, 2011
Staff especially Carol was warm, friendly and informative...food was absolutely wonderful...although it would have been nice to have paper plates available with the afternoon snacks...overall we had an very pleasant stay and would not hesitate to recommend Cleftstone Manor to friends and family or to stay there again outselves.

This was a very pleasant stay at this historical inn. We were given a complimentary CD to do a car tour of the area. Room was nice and clean. A little small but adequate. Breakfast was very good. Not always someone at the front desk, but friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend and would stay there again.
3.6 on September 06, 2011
The room was spacious, but some of the bathroom features were antiquated: separate faucets for hot and cold water and the toilet bowl ran unless the handle was jiggled. The breakfasts were very nicely presented, but the quality of the food was below average and became monotonous over a 4 day stay.
5 on September 06, 2011
Magnificent B&B. Loved our four day stay there. We had a cute room and huge bathroom, complete with clawed footed tub. Breakfasts were scrumptious, varied, very well thought out and meticulously prepared. A Happy Hour, from 5:30 to 6:30, where delicious "haute cuisine" canapes and appetizers were provided, gave guests an opportunity to meet and socialize, and we met wonderful people during the course of our stay: an excellent initiative on Anne's part. Anne Bahr was a delight to meet, and we look forward to returning to Barr Harbor and revisiting. Big thank you to Anne, Robert and her wonderful staff for such a great stay. We'll meet again. Ken and Maureen

A very pleasant stay. Escaping the heat of Texas in late August makes any part of ME hard to beat. However, after a day in Portland and two days in Camden, where we had wonderful accommodations as well, the Cleftstone Manor was superb. Service was excellent, staff very helpful and thoughtful, and food beyond expectations. We booked rather late and next trip anticipate booking different rooms, which seem to offer greater amenities. Just wonderful - - - centrally located to everything we wanted to do, nice comfortable room w/other rooms for socializing, eating, drinking, reading, and relaxing. Staff is pleasant and knowledgeable with information on surrounding area. Not only was the gourmet breakfast excellent, but as soon as we sat down we were waited on. They were there to serve, and please their guests. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

The room was spacious and comfortably furnished. The photos are a good representation of the decor and everything was very clean. The atmosphere was friendly and the welcome tray set out in the bedroom was exceptional. The meals were really satisfying - no one left the table hungry or had to cut their hiking short to get to the next meal. The staff was really responsive and friendly. Our bed was much too hard for me, so I didn't sleep well. Next time I'd bring a foam mattress topper.

Cleftstone Manor is a lovely spot just far enough away from the village of Bar Harbor to let you get away from the business of down town. We found the Cleftstone Manor to be very nice. It was old, but very well kept. We had 2 different rooms, with 2 adult couples. The AC was a window unit and very loud. The AC did keep down the noise of the busy, heavy, loud traffic on Eden Street. Anne Bahr was very helpful suggesting a very good restaurant. And helping direct us to Cadillac Mountain. The breakfast food was delicious. Everyone was very helpful and couteous.

We found an open room at Cleftstone pretty last minute, and didn't know what we'd signed up for. There were beautiful photos, but you never know these days. Anyway, when we checked in it was beautiful. The room (we stayed in the Gist Blair) was really great, and so so clean! Also - the food was excellent. Creme brulee french toast all the way! Also - the staff was pretty hands-off other than providing great service at breakfast. Which, for me, is great -- because they were there if needed, but not always buzzing around. We were more inclined to explore Bar Harbor on our own agenda so that worked out great. Also - we didn't get to meet her until we were packing our car to leave but they had the cutest dog, Nellie - who greeted us in the parking lot the last day! Would definitely go back.

We just returned from the best vacation ever. We spent ten days (8/2/11-8/12/11) exploring Mount Desert Island and enjoying the wonderful hospitality at Cleftstone Manor in Bar Harbor. We don't have a vast experience with B & Bs but I am sure that any future stay anywhere else will have to go a long way to beat this one. The room was perfect, comfortable and well appointed. Anne's breakfasts (I am a breakfast person) were outstanding and her hospitality was genuine and very warm. The staff was very friendly and accommodating and the "tea time" was not to be missed. All in all, staying here made our trip. Karl & Jerry Ann

Cleftstone Manor is a lovely place to stay. We were disappointed, however, that the room we chose was very small, smaller than the picture indicated. The other issue was the annoyance of its location on Highway 3. Rather than being able to enjoy the wonderful fresh air with open windows, we had to turn the air conditioner on high to mask the traffic noise. But on a more positive note, the breakfasts were outstanding and the service was great. We would stay there again, now that we know which rooms are on the back side and are larger.

We arrived late and set out after breakfast the next day to explore, so we didn't personally meet the innkeeper face-to-face. The kitchen staff was busy serving breakfast in the morning, so there seemed to be less of a personal touch by never having an introduction. All-in-all a good stay though.

Our room was clean and very night there was a log in our fireplace in our bedroom. (Yes, we heated our room in June!) If you are considering a visit to Bar Harbor or Arcadia National Park, I highly recommend this is a part of your trip. It is well worth the cost.

Beautiful inn, charming atmosphere, good service. My room (Kebo valley) was large and absolutely comfortable for a family of three (son is 16 y/o), the only downside was a bit of noise from the main street. This is a B&B so you have to take your car to reach one of the many restaurants of Bar Harbor and in July finding a parking spot was like winning a lottery, but this of course is not a fault of the Inn. All in all, highly recommended for a pleasant stay in Bar Harbor.

My wife and I are from New England and have stayed in many NE B&Bs as well as some in Bar Harbor previously over the last 30 years. This one is OK but not on a par with many in which we have stayed. It lacked the “B&B” feel and it is a bit difficult to nail down exactly why. The building had a “dingy” feel not very bright and cheerful. The only place that was an exception was the Sun room where guests gather for afternoon refreshments. The B&B’s location is bit odd as it is located on a steep entry road and adjacent to a large motel/hotel complex. Our room (Pulitzer Premium A) was large/clean with 2 entrances - a private entrance to the room via a private patio and another door that exits through a bathroom to the dining room. A bit odd we thought. As it was located next to kitchen and dining room it wasa bit noisy in the AM. The room also lost some of the feeling of privacy because of the location. Breakfast was good but a bit restrictive and could use more choices. Nice period furnishings. Inn keeper was very friendly. All and all ok but certainly not up to the standards of other B&Bs in that price range where we have stayed.

James G. Blaine room is great... corner unit with fireplace. About 15-20 minute walk to center of Bar Harbor. Fairly good B&B value considering the area. Breakfast is good... kept my wife and I full until the mid afternoon even during days of intense hiking through Acadia.

This was our 5th stay at Cleftstone Manor. Before discovering this gem, we tried a variety of places in Bar Harbor, never liking any well enough to return. Suffice it to say, we have found our permanent Bar Harbor spot. Cleftstone Manor is warm and inviting, the breakfasts are superb, Anne is friendly and helpful and it is always a perfect and relaxing stay! Highly recommended!!!

We would return to stay here as it was very elegant with beautiful furnishings. Very large and impressive. Our room was quaint with a lovely large original historic bathroom with clawfoot tub and marble vanity with antique faucets. Very well appointed. Owner made herself very available and friendly. The location was easy to find and the Manor sat upon a hill. The afternoon social hour was a nice touch with complimentary beverages and appetizers.

We are repeat lodgers at the Cleftstone. We love the different rooms and the history of the place. Anne is a great hostess and the breakfasts are scrumptious--often it's hard to decide between the two choices offered. The early evening appetizers encourage the mingling among guests--it's great fun to meet folks from all over America.

My friend and I experienced our first trip to Bar Harbor and were pleasantly surprised. Bar Harbor is beautiful and there are many things to do there to keep you occupied, even on rainy days. We were very happy with our accomodations. Cleftstone Manor is a grand house and tastefully decorated. Our room was comfortable and clean, with all the amenities one would expect at a well-run bed and breakfast. The food was outstanding! We were greeted and treated to appetizers served in the sunrroom on our arrival. Each night, we brought a glass of wine down and enjoyed the appetizers. The hostess (owner) was there each evening to chat and offer ideas for activities and restaurants. The breakfasts were always well presented and delicious! A There were always two choices and were always ample! All in all, I'd highly recommend the Cleftstone Manor.

We came after a 3 day stay in Quebec and found the history from there and Bar Harbor were so intertwined. It felt like an extension of the trip, especially when we found out that the architect of the Hotel Frontenac where we had our anniversary dinner, was also the architect of the Manor. Breakfasts were glorious and the hospitality and charm was wonderful. We stayed on the 2nd floor and had a great room at the front.

Lovely Bed and Breakfast with wonderful hosts! A bit of a "quirky" location - would have preferred to be a bit closer to town. Breakfasts were delicious with plenty of choice available. All in all a lovely place to stay with shared amenities with the Bluestone Inn above. In warmer weather the pool would have been a real plus. We had a delightful two nights and the price was very reasonable.

The Cleftstone Manor proved to be an outstanding value - our room was comfortable, the inn was cozy and quiet despite being nearly completely booked. Breakfast was excellent and the innkeepers were personable and welcoming. With lots of construction going on in Bar Harbor, we were away from it all. We enjoyed being just outside the busy part of town while close enough that we were minutes away by car. Parking was free and plentiful. We would definitely return.

Wonderful atmosphere! Delicious breakfast! Comfortable room! Perfect location!

I found Cleftstone manner to be acceptable. The room was a good size and breakfast was good, staff was friendly. I did not like the location as it was next a big commercial hotel and therefore not very private or cozy. The patio was not private and was shared with neighboring rooms which was not mentioned in the website. Finally, we found a few small bugs in the bathroom.

Our host, Anne was very gracious and helpful. She had many great suggestions for places to eat and things to do in Bar Harbor. But what we will remember the most were the gourmet breakfasts, they were outstanding!

The Inn is a well cared for old home.....the common areas are warm and welcoming. Our room was very nice, had a fireplace ( too warm to use it) and great decor. We will stay there again whenever we are in the area!

We stayed in the Cleftstone room, and the moment I walked in the first words out of my mouth were "oh my god this room is amazing!" because it was! Beautiful, comfortable and perfect. Our stay was too short, but we will return, enjoy the fireplace, curl up on the couch and enjoy chatting with our hosts. Also, the breakfasts were beyond fabulous. Thank you again, Amazing, wonderful time in the most beautiful room I've ever stayed in.

Shared the Kebo Valley room with 2 close friends. Golden Age mansion converted to B&B still retains much of the aura of yesteryear. Location is very close to Acadia N. P. and within walking distance to downtown. Breakfasts were excellent, especially the red pepper quiche! While the room was charming, if you weigh over 100lbs avoid the sofa bed and sleep on the couch instead. Ann, the host, was most charming. No longer have computer in library area so bring your laptop for the free wifi. All things considered a great experience. JBT

This was a wonderful place to spend a few days of our honeymoon. Wonderful innkeepers, delicious breakfast, and comfortable rooms. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone staying on Bar Harbor.

We love this inn and try to stay here every time we come to Bar Harbor (usually once or twice a year). We prefer the Joseph Pulitzer or Kebo Valley rooms but others are nice. The hostess, Anne, is interesting and lively. The staff keeps the inn clean and running smoothly. Breakfast has 2 excellent hot options as well as cold options. They put out a treat in the afternoons. Anne can steer you towards attractions if you need help deciding what to see or do. I would definitely recommend this inn if you are spending any time in the park! Gary and Alice

We stayed three nights and very much enjoyed the accommodations. The room was spacious, the breakfasts were enjoyable and filling, and additional "little" considerations made the Cleftstone a great choice. We wouldn't hesitate to return.

A great stay at a very friendly inn. The Proprietress shared her interest in Musical Theatre and how important it was to be locally involved with the arts.

This room was excellent for 3 people. Anne was an excellent host and the wait staff very friendly and good service. The price is reasonable and the rooms cozy and clean. Very good breakfast and atmosphere. There were games and DVDs available for in room entertainment. Anne made an excellent recommendation for Maggie's Restaurant for dinner. I would definitely recommend it! MJ in Brunswick, ME

Wonderful stay. Check in and orientation was quick and to the point. Owner met us on arrival. Very comfortable bed. Clean in all respects. Staff was very friendly and accomodating. Breakfast was to die for. Best coffee I've had in years. We shall return!

We stayed three nights, my wife (who was not aware of the arrangements ahead of time) did not want to leave. The room was wonderful - we were on the third floor, but I knew that from the description - the hosts were super helpful, and the food was tasty. Appetizers in the afternoon were a wonderful treat - sitting around the fireplace talking to other guests. The recommendations for places to eat in the evening were excellent (our 2nd night we listened to someone else, and unfortunately found that there is at least one "poor" restaurant in the area; whereas the two recommendations from the hosts were a great meal at a great value.

We enjoyed our stay. However, we felt barely acknowledged when we arrived. The owner/manager is not very friendly. The breakfast waitstaff were very cordial and made us feel welcome. The food was very good.

Very nice Bed and Breakfast. Somewhat difficult to walk to town. Staff was helpful for locating restaurants in town. Beautiful appointed rooms. Third floor room has low ceilings. Might be difficult for tall people. Overall a very nice place.

We found Cleftstone not only convenient but very confortable. We stayed in the Joseph Pulitzer room with a private entrance which my husband really liked. The little garden sitting area was very nice. The history of the building and area was also very interesting. I would like to return and spend more time there.

The owner was very gracious, friendly, and personable; the staff was professional and courteous; the entire facility was immaculate; and we had a wonderful time. We definitely would go back to the Cleftstone Manor in the future!

This was the best bed and breaksfast I have ever stayed in. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The breakfast menu was outstanding and the history provided about the home and surround area was terrific. I will most definitely be back.

We thoroughly enjoyed our six nights at Cleftstone Manor! And HIGHLY recommend it to anyone staying in the Bar Harbor area! Just be prepared to gain a few pounds because you will not resist the temptation to clean your plate each morning! The GREAT food, friendly service and interesting surroundings of this elegantly-aged home make it easy to get up for breakfast and a good cup of coffee every day! We, of course, spent a lot of time out and about each day and really liked the open door policy that did not limit when we came and went. LOVED that the beds were made for us each morning...what a nice amenity, and that there were interesting things, like the upstairs library, for us to freely enjoy within the house. We have stayed at a lot of B&Bs, Cleftstone Manor is now DEFINITELY among our favorites! We thank Anne, Bob and your friendly, attentive staff for such a nice visit! This was my first bed and breakfast experience. The property was beautiful and the breakfast was delicious. Since this was our first B&B visit, we really didn't know what to expect. A co-worker stayed at a Bar Harbor Inn and raved about how friendly the innkeeper was. This was not the case at the Cleftstone Manor. If we asked the innkeeper a question, she would answer but she did not go out of her way to speak to us. At times, it seemed like we were bothering her. Although the property was nice, our room had peeling paint and wallpaper and when I went to unplug the hair dryer, the entire electric plate came away from the wall. We paid a lot of money for this room, however, I do not feel it was worth it.

The host was very helpful, made a personal call to get us into the hottest restaurant in town on short notice (and it was wonderful). Lots of great reading material about Bar Harbor and the Inn, and historical touches throughout which made you really feel as if you were a part of the place.

Location of Inn was very easy to find. House was very clean and decorated well. Room was clean, food was excellent, picnic carry lunch was great, prepared and ready on time I requested. While checking in, owner could have been more personable and happy to have us staying there, no smile, quick answers, fast tour of house. When asked questions about other things to do, I wasn't given much for entertainment in the area. Wifi computer connection was extremely slow, no security for connection.

A few words of advice in regards to the Cleftstone: If what you're looking for is a five star modern hotel with all modern furniture, fixtures, and amenities, this isn't the place for you. If, however, you're looking forward to staying in a beautifully maintained historic inn with loads of charm and character, truly gourmet breakfasts, and an engaging innkeeper and friendly staff, then please by all means, make that reservation right now. Our recent stay at the Cleftstone was all of that and more. Anne will tell you that she's not a chef, but that is belied by the excellent breakfasts that came every morning from the kitchen to tantalize our tastebuds - As mentioned before, the Roasted Red Pepper Quiche is fantastic, but so are the Kahlua Pecan Waffles and the Strata was simply out of this world. We had no issues with road noise (admittedly, we did have the air conditioning running, it was quite warm last week!) and I would caution those who are tall or broad in the beam that they may find the Josephine McCaffrey not to their liking as the quarters can be a little on the close side. But that said, we greatly enjoyed our stay and are very much looking forward to a return trip. Hope to see you there!

When one enjoys staying at an establishment, he/she may well return for a second time. We are just completing our 20th (you read that correctly) stay at the Cleftstone Manor. Our visits have been and continue to be outstanding, from Anne and Bob Bahr and their very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful staff, to the exceptionally clean rooms and delicious breakfasts, to the beauty, history, and Old World charm of the Cleftstone Manor. Please do not miss the opportunity to stay at this extraordinary inn.

Our stay at the Cleftstone Manor exceeded our expectations. Particularly notable were the outstanding breakfasts - truly gourmet. Room was nice and spacious, but lacked a usable table. Staff very helpful. It is a good value as the price is below many area B&Bs.

We visited the Cleftstone Manor for 3 nights on our honeymoon. I did lots of research on the surrounding bed and breakfasts and this one had everything we were looking for. We chose the Cleftstone room, due to the recommendation of the owner, Anne, that it was a favorite with honeymooners. OUR ROOM: Much larger than expected. Beautifully furnished. Fireplace. Four Post bed. Terry cloth robes. TV and DVD player. Telephone and Desk. THE INN: Relaxing, welcoming, comfortable. Abbie's Retreat was a nice place to sit and read. The front room with the fireplace provided the perfect backdrop for appetizers and drinks before dinner. We met some of the other guests at happy hour as well. Tea and coffee was readily available almost all day. BREAKFAST: Delicious 3 course breakfasts. Varies by day. The first day: pears and raspberries, cranberry muffins, choice of blueberry pancakes or egg and ham cups. The second day: cantalope and strawberries, blueberry muffins, choice of lemon poppyseed waffle or eggs benedict. The third day: mixed fruit cup, pineapple muffins and a choice of blueberry french toast or eggs, any way with bacon. Every morning you were offered coffee, tea, O.J. or cranberry juice as well as a croissant. The food was plenty filling for a day exploring Mount Desert Island. MISCELLANEOUS: The owner Anne, as well as her staff, Grace and Cheryl, were quite accommodating, willing to answer any and all questions. Anne lent us a CD of a tour of Acadia that helped us enjoy this magnificent national park, just ask her. DVD's were available to watch, there were books all over the inn and places to sit and read or chat. Soda and Water were available for $1 a piece on the honor system. We wandered the manor awhile and checked out some of the other rooms. All were beautifully furnished. The location was less than a 5 minute drive to the main pier in Bar Harbor or to the entrance to Acadia National Park.

This was our favorite inn in our entire 10 day vacation in Maine and Mass.!! We loved the warm hospitality of the hosts. The breakfast was excellent. The 5:00 social hour in the parlor with appetizers helped us to meet fellow travelers and we loved discussing the house with the owners! Great place. WE want to come back!!
