Almond Amaretto French Toast

Ingredients

  • 10 slices crusty Italian bread or other crusty bread
  • 3/4 cup whole or 2% milk
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/3 cup amaretto
  • 1 teaspoon vainlla
  • 3 eggs
  • sprinkle nutmeg
  • sliced almonds

  1. slice bread into 3/4" thick slices. Put out on a tray at least 1 hour before cooking (or up to 3 hours before)in order to make it a little stale.
  2. Mix milk, orange juice, amaretto, eggs and vanilla in a large bowl (large enough that bread slices can be dipped)
  3. Spread a large plate with sliced almonds. Dip the bread into the liquid mixture quickly - 2-4 seconds - let excess drip off, then press 1 side into almonds. Place on a 375 degree (or hot) griddle , almond side down. Cook about 5 minutes per side, pressing the slices down gently once on each side with a spatula.
  4. Serve with almond side up, sprinkled with nutmeg. (and real maple syrup.)
