Trained as professional biologists, your hosts at the Open Gates B&B will arrange for guided nature tours of the Altamaha River,surrounding marshes and isolated islands, all of which abound with wildlife. The coastal village of Darien, located on the banks of the Altamaha River, is a beautiful shrimping town full of Southern charm and eclectic character. Built in 1876, the Open Gates Bed & Breakfast is uniquely situated for nature lovers, birders, kayakers, and history enthusiasts wanting to experience one of the richest natural ecosystems in the world. Explore the old-fashoined small town of Darien, with her rich pre-colonial, Scottish, native-American, Gullah-Geechee and Civil War history. Stroll along the scenic Darien waterfront, watch the shrimp boats unload their catch, and peruse antique shops and local art galleries. Historic Fort King George (1721), the oldest European fort in the state, is located within walking distance of the inn. Classic Victorian home in the heart of Brunswick's historic "South End." Spacious "get together" parlors, one downstairs and one upstairs, each with its own character and unique charm. Our dining room, with its old world ambience, one of a kind light fixtures and magnificent slate fireplace, is home to guests for a leisurely southern style breakfast. Reflecting the colorful history of the old south, all guest rooms are lovingly furnished with antiques and an eclectic mix of personally selected objets d'art. Each room has a full private bath and is climate controlled.

The McKinnon House is the perfect place to savor the bed and breakfast experience. Surrounded by family heirlooms and splendid period furniture, visitors can indulge in the graciousness of a by-gone era and the charm of Southern hospitality. Situated in the heart of historic Old Town Brunswick, the Victorian house was completed in 1902 as the residence of lumber magnate L.T. McKinnon and since 1993 has been the home of the innkeeper, Jo Miller. Seventeen Corinthian columns define the exterior of this turn-of-the-century home. Made of Georgia cypress, the columns grace front and side porches hung with ferns and lined with comfortable rocking chairs and wicker swings. Inside, a lovely handcrafted staircase dominates the reception hall. This staircase is made of Tennessee white ash, as is the intricate woodwork on the walls and ceilings throughout the house. To the left and right are the sitting room, parlor, and dining room, each furnished with museum quality pieces from Charleston and New Orleans. Individually designed mantelpieces surround each of the nine working fireplaces in the house. Although each is unique, most retain the column motif begun with the exterior columns. Preserved with loving respect for architectural integrity, the house is replete with special details that bring to life the Victorian age. Converted gas light fixtures, original oak and pine floors, gleaming brass and silver, fresh flowers, and candlelit rooms at twilight all create an elegant and authentic setting.
