We wanted to stay in Chincoteague but waited too late and ended up staying here instead. It's quite close to Chincoteague abut after visiting the island I think it was for the best. The island is quite busy and crowded and G&S is quiet and spacious. we stayed in a suite (3 of us) and it was very comfortable. It was in a separate building behind the inn and looked out into a field of wheat. The furnishings are top notch with a gas fireplace at the foot of the king sized bed and a tub with jets in the bathroom. Breakfast was amazing. I was expecting something simple but it was a treat, more of a desert that the hosts had adapted from a German recipe (the host are from Germany). They Inn is even dog friendly. If I ever go back to Chincoteague I'd stay here rather than trying to stay on the island. The hosts are amazingly gracious and very thorough in caring for their guests.
This was my first B&B and thoroughly enjoyed myself. The room we had was awesome. The bed is to die for (haven't slept that well in a long time) and the jacuzzi tub was heavenly. Breakfast was incredible and the host and other guests made for some really good conversation. I would definitely return to this place again.
Our stay at the Garden and the Sean Inn was exactly what we were looking for. We did not book a real honeymoon yet and just wanted a few days to get away together after our wedding. From our beautiful room (the Chablis Suite) to Dorothee's AWESOME breakfasts, to the great recommendations we were given for things to do (with our dog) while there, the experience was just great. I would highly recommend a stay at the Garden and the Sea Inn, as we certainly hope to return in the near future.
The Sandpiper room was very beautiful and clean. The innkeepers were very fast to help when our bathroom electricity went out. The breakfast was a table of homemade yogurt, fruit, bran cereal, etc..which was the same both mornings. The first morning was maple banana french toast which was good. The second morning was eggs benedict with salmon and asparagus. I was less than thrilled with the offerings at breakfast especially the second morning. I am a very picky eater but I assumed that breakfast wouldn't be an issue. I will say that they offered to give me something else after they saw I didn't eat, but by that time I was over it. I blame myself for not saying something immediately b/c I am sure they would have fixed me something else. I have only stayed in one other B&B and just expected there to be a wide variety to choose from. The house is close enough to the highway that you can see it and it is audible outside but not inside. The grounds were nice but needed much work--which I think they were trying to start on when we left. The rooms were the nicest thing with awesome decorations and a cool electric fireplace that I loved..also the enclosed side porch was awesome..
My wife and I recently spent a wonderful evening at the Inn. Dorothee and Tom Renn provide a quiet Victorian respite located a short distance from the main highway. However it felt as if we had traveled to a spot of gentle elegance. Their hospitality made us feel as if we were part of a family. Oh, and the breakfast is outstanding.
Never having stayed at a Bed and Breakfast before, I wasn't sure what to expect. The room my wife and I selected was very cozy with a spacious bed. The room was clean and actually cleaned daily by maids. They didn't just come in and empty the trash, they vacuumed and mopped daily. For breakfast I was expecting eggs and bacon or pancakes almost every day. I was pleasantly surprised that our hostess actually made different meals every morning. They had a table set up with the usual fruit, coffee, and such, but each morning we had a newly cooked meal that looked as if a professional chef had made it specially for us. My wife and I did decide to leave a day early but that had nothing to do with our stay. We would not hesitate to go back, and hope to have time to go this fall.
My boyfriend, who has never had a desire to stay at a B & B & conceded to make me happy, is sold--he says he will NEVER stay in a hotel again unless there is absolutely no alternative. The Chardonnay Room’s pictures & description do not do it justice—we grinned for our entire stay. There were also 2 minor but splendid perks to the room (which was more like a suite for as roomy as it was) that I also haven't seen mentioned. First, the bathroom skylights let us see stars at night & beautiful view of blue skies & green leaves during the day. Second, the bathtub (more than big enough for the 2 of us) had the little perk that its fixtures were to the side, & not in the center. You can use your imagination here, but having them out of the way can be great if you’re feeling romantic & in a hurry to get out of the tub.
As for the property & the buildings, the inn itself was incredibly charming. There were 3 buildings on the property. The grounds, buildings, decorations, amenities (including complimentary port wine!) were all wonderful. We found the swing near the reflecting pond to be very cozy & romantic, too.
The innkeepers themselves sealed the deal. We were welcomed most warmly, & our orientation to the grounds, though not time consuming, was very informative & appreciated.
Breakfast itself was actually a FUN & scrumptious affair. The spread was wonderful (yum, homemade yogurt!) & Dorothee's cooking skills were fantastic, as was the presentation of our food. While we dined, Thomas was available to chat--he's both hilarious & full of excellent information about the area. Likewise, diners who appeared to want privacy were provided superb service but left to chat between themselves.
All in all, neither my boyfriend nor I have a single complaint about our stay. He said he can't wait to stay at another bed & breakfast & that he absolutely wants to come back to the Garden & the Sea Inn!
The couple who own the bed and breakfast were very hospitable and friendly. They made eggs Benedict for breakfast and it was delicious. The rooms were also very nice and clean. The location was perfect for exploring Chincoteague island and neighboring areas. The owners provided great advice on places to eat on the island.
We had an opportunity recently to stay at the Garden and Sea Inn for three nights. After reading the reviews our only concern was how could it live up to our now impossibly high expectations. Well, I don't know how they could have done it, but Thomas and Doro managed to exceed them.
The experience at Garden and Sea begins and ends with the world's best hosts. Thomas and Dorothee are energetic, helpful, friendly, welcoming, charming...truly salt-of-the-earth. They are both that rare type of person who, after talking with them for only a few minutes, makes you feel like you have been best friends for years.
When we arrived we were given a lovely tour of the property and buildings, along with a history of the inn. The grounds are beautiful, with little gardens and walkways all around, quiet places to sit and read, small ponds with frogs and fish, even a mediation garden with an inviting swing. The Garden House has a welcoming parlor where you can sit and drink coffee and tea, accompanied by Doro's homemade cookies, which are generously restocked throughout the day. If you are there when we are, please be sure to leave me one of the chocolate chip cookies - they are amazing!.
The guestrooms are well appointed with great decorating touches throughout. Our bed was oh-so-comfortable - I haven't slept so soundly in a long time. We were comfortable and relaxed the entire time.
Dorothee is an amazing cook (the plates had barely been cleared when we started wondering what she would be making for us the next day!). Each breakfast was not only great-tasting, but so very well presented as well. Thomas is a wonderful host who kept us entertained with stories and recommendation for sightseeing and dining.
Our time at the inn ended far too quickly, and we are already planning our next visit - partly for the chance to explore the eastern shore again, but mostly to catch-up with our new friends Thomas and Dorothee.
My girlfriend and I stayed there because it was reviewed so highly online by everyone else. We certainly were not disappointed. Everything was very clean, the food was great, and they made sure to provide plenty of complimentary snacks and sodas. The people are very friendly and interesting. It was everything we expected.
The inkeepers here are fantastic, and the breakfast here is one of the best around.brought back very good memories of Germany.there are not many bed and breakfast here in Virginia that allows pets and we are glad they are allowed here.there is plenty of room for your pet to run out in the nearby field and the rooms here are very clean and the property is kept up very nicely.we will be returning here again
My sister and I loved our "girls getaway" with our two dogs at the Garden and Sea Inn. A cozy home base to explore the Eastern Shore, with a tasty breakfast served every morning.
Our stay at the GARDEN & SEA INN was wonderful. The inn keepers were very nice and offered great dinner suggestions and we LOVED the Shiraz room. The interesting history of the houses on the property and the fact that the B&B is dog friendly both were a nice plus.
I was sent on travel for work and needed a Pet Friendly place to stay near Wallops.
I arrived at 10pm and was given a personal tour of the common areas and shown to my room. I stayed in the Lighthouse room. I was going to be working nights and they were very accomodating.
Half way through my trip my wife and daughter came to visit and they gave me a great deal on a different room so we could all be together and I could get some sleep during the day.
I would not recomend this place for a stay longer than 3 days if you have family with as there is no microwave in your room. But for a weekend get away it is great.
The owners and staff bend over backward to make your stay enjoyable and providing doggie blankets was a huge plus.
[Resource Id: InnkeeperResponse, Set: reviews] Thank you very much for your review! We always appreciate guest feedback, because it allows us to improve our performance. In this case, though, this is not easy.
The review says, the owners and the staff were very accommodating and bent over backward to make your stay enjoyable. Which is, what we do. But this is rewarded with a pretty poor score of 3 out of 5 in Service.
You stayed in one of our nicest rooms, the Chablis Suite. This suite is about 600 sqf large, newly renovated, with hardwood floors, king size bed, separate living area with sleeper sofa for the child, a beautiful and large bathroom with double jacuzzi, a private deck and a private screened in porch overlooking the pool and the greens in our back yard. You will have a hard time finding a nicer room anywhere in the area. And, again, this lovely suite scores only 3 out of 5 points for the room.
The review states, we gave you a great deal on that room. This is true, since you were only charged the government per diem rate and we accommodated your wife, daughter and dog for pretty much a nominal fee in this usually way more expensive suite. And, again, the score is 3 out of 5 in Value.
So we are clueless... The only room for improvement that we can see in this review is to bring a microwave into the room. This would have been an easy fix, if you only had mentioned this request during your stay. Instead, you and your wife said several times that it was no problem at all for you to use the public microwave in the parlor.
To be honest, we can not really see a reason for such a poor rating. Maybe you can drop us an email with some more details?
Great job --- small town but an area we love. Spacious rooms, friendly hosts. Great dog friendly. I would absolutely recommend and would stay again.,
Rich and Michele G
This was a fabulous location to get away to for a winter weekend. The room was cozy and spacious, the hosts were friendly, and the location gave easy access to Chincoteague. And you can't beat the price. We'd definitely come back.
Our travels took us to the VA coast area in the fall of 2011 where we were lucky enough to find this wonderful B&B. We've stayed in other B&Bs over the years but the hospitality and accommodations were far superior to what we've encountered before. The breakfasts were amazing - great food and wonderful service. The rooms were very clean, comfortable and inviting. The grounds offer plenty of room to sit and relax, take short hikes, and enjoy the outdoors. If we are ever in the area again, we'll definitely stay at the Garden and the Sea again.
My fiance and I have stayed there in August of '10 and '12. The innkeepers, Dorothee and Thomas, did everything to make sure that our stay was as pleasant as possible. The rooms were always clean. The location is a short drive to Chincoteague Island and the beach. There is no doubt where we will be staying during our next trip to the area.
We have stayed in several B&B inns, always around Thanksgiving. Garden and Sea was the best and we will be back, perhaps for a spring visit.
The inn is elegantly appointed and our room was so comfortable. Also, our dog had her own little fenced yard! Dorothee and Thomas are gracious hosts.
The moment we first walked into the house, the first thing that immediately caught our attention was how gorgeous the house is. The very sweet and friendly owners, Thomas and Dorothee, really have great taste. You can't go wrong with any room.
They also made us delicious pancakes with homemade blueberry syrup and gave us some great insider info on what to do in the area.
This place is truly special. For anyone who is looking to spend a relaxing vacation in a beautiful location, this is the place for you.
This is our 13th year at the Garden and Sea Inn, and we've already booked next year's weekend. The innkeepers are charming, attentive, helpful and really great people. The room we stayed in (Champagne) was beautifully appointed and cozy. We can't recommend this inn strongly enough.
Great food, lovely facilities. If you don't just go to the beach everyday but want a more varied experience the location is ideal. This is within a short drive of the beach, of the lower Virginia Eastern Shore and the Maryland Eastern shore. We had an overcast day and we just hung out on the screened in porch and relaxed the whole day. I already want to go back.
The owners Thomas and Dorothy are by far the best B&B owners we've seen in a very long time. They are caring, helpful and friendly. They were the best I've ever seen at covering the small details like amenities and truly made our stay a complete joy.
Date of stay: 1-2 Oct 12.
Joe & Lorraine L.
Thomas and Dorothee made us feel very welcome, very informative about places to visit, places to eat, things to do. They went out of their way to accomodate dietary needs and make us as comfortable as possible.
We just returned from the Eastern Shore and the Garden & Sea Inn. Our stay was absolutely wonderful, the Renn's were wonderful hosts, cooks and informational guides! We so appreciate their hosptality.
we had a wonderful time at this great hideaway B&B! It's like a little fairy tale castle and you feel transported into another time... The Innkeepers are very friendly and helpful and breakfast was delicious. We much preferred staying here as compared to the fast food scene at the beaches.
My husband and I stayed at the Garden and Sea Inn for a weekend and absolutely loved it. Breakfast is delicious! We are self-proclaimed foodies and so enjoyed Dorothy's cooking, especially the blueberry pancakes. Both she and Thomas were great to talk to and they gave us many helpful recommendations for things to do in the Chincoteague area. The decorating was beautiful inside and the landscaping was tranquil, and relaxing. Best of all, there was a constant supply of fresh-baked cookies and other snacks available 24 hours a day! The Inn is about a 20 minute drive from Chincoteague island, but it is 100% worth it. Beautiful place, caring people, yummy food!
A cozy place to stay with the canine kids when visiting Chincoteague
Thomas and Dorothee are lovely hosts and go out of their way to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. All the little extras - doggie treats, cookies, hot tea in the early mornings (with real coffee mugs instead of paper cups!) - will make it our preferred choice over any regular chain motel. It was our first time in a B&B and we will definitely visit them again when we go back to Chincoteague.
Our stay at the Garden and Sea Inn was very relaxing and pleasant. We have stayed at a few BB's and we found this one to be much more laid back. The room was extremely spacious and although might be considered a little rustic to some people, I felt it was simple and extremely comfortable. We had no major issues and all the little ones were fixed ASAP. The innkeepers were extremely friendly and accommodating and gave us some great information about the area. All in all I just felt very comfortable there - it was very clean and quiet!
Our friendly and gracious hosts warmly welcomed us to their beautiful off-the-beaten-track bed and breakfast, the Garden and the Sea B&B Inn. Thomas and Dorothee Renn's establishment, which features a lovely Victorian home and a separate Garden House, as well as their own home, is on a peaceful side street, rural setting conveiniently located just off Route 13 South in New Church, Virginia. The 5+acres of grounds include meticulously kept gardens and interconnecting pathways which really set this inn apart. There are roomy porches and outdoor areas to sit and relax, various nooks with fountains and whimsical statues which allow for a sense of privacy, and even a swimming pool to enjoy.
Dorothee provides her guests with delicious and filling breakfasts in the bright and sunny ground floor of the main house. Her pancakes with fresh blueberry syrup were phenomenal! Both she and her husband were so helpful in providing tour information. We followed their suggestions for sightseeing and dining on Chincoteague Island and were so pleased with everything. We even were given a pass to enter the wildlife refuge, Chincoteague's "main attraction" which was a generous, unexpected plus.
We stayed in the Sandpiper room on the lower level of the Garden House, a tastefully decorated, cosy room with soft hued colors and a spacious bathroom with a whirlpool tub. Each day of our stay, our hosts had fresh baked goods and snacks and an assortment of beverages in the parlor that guests could help themselves to as they wished. Games, puzzles, and books were also available to choose amongst. Every effort was made so that guests would feel welcome and comfortable.
If you are looking for a peaceful, quiet retreat, a place to unwind and feel pampered, and still be close to local attractions, you will defintely find it here! Highly recommended.
My wife and I visited the Garden and Sea Inn in 2011 and fell in love with the charm of the property and the innkeepers, Thomas and Dorothee. This year my wife insisted on spending a 3 day weekend here to close out our summer. Our second visit only heightened our desire to make the Garden and Sea Inn a regular experience.
In addition to a cozy bed and breakfast the Garden and Sea Inn is conveniently located near Chincoteague Island and the Assateague National Seashore. We visited both during our stay but particularly enjoyed our daytrip to the sandbar off the southern end of Chincoteague Island. There's lots to do exploring the islands, seeing the horses, taking kayak/boat tours, and exploring the local area. Furthermore talking with Thomas and Dorothee is thoroughly delightful and they recommended amazing local restaurants, antique stores and daily excursions.
Whether you enjoy a glass of port on the porch with new friends, like to explore the beautiful eastern shore outdoors or spend time with your 4 legged friend, the Garden and Sea Inn is the place for you.
My wife and I went to the Garden Sea in July of 2012. Marvelous place. I have uber Celiac disease and the owners really know their stuff about allergies and intollerences. They were able to feed me like a king every morning and recomend restaurants for dinner at night. Just let them know in advance and you'll be well taken care of.
Elegant & comfortable room, cleanliness 5 star, facility & property are top notch, beautiful & serene gardens, ponds, & 'meditative walking paths throughout the property. Cuisine was innovative and a far cry from the standard hot cakes & eggs. Inkeepers Dorothea & Tom greet every guest with warm smiles making them feel like they are part of their family. Highy recommended for those seeking a truly restfull & relaxing experience..
My boyfriend and I stayed in the Chardonnay room for a week and we do not have a single complaint. The room was absolutely gorgeous, the bathroom will make you never want to leave, and the cleanliness of the entire property is outstanding. The housekeepers kept our rooms completely spotless and always had fresh towels when needed. The innkeepers are very welcoming and knowledgable of the area. It's about a 15+ minute drive to the beach but it has other restaurants and little shops outside of chincoteague that it is close to. We would absolutely recommend this place to everybody. We plan on coming back next summer.
We spent two nights in the lovely bed and breakfast. Everything was exactly as stated on the website, or better! The accommodations, the food, the hosts and surroundings were absolutely outstanding. We will definately return!
We were just at Graden and Sea Inn, what a great experience! The owers could not be more pleasant and nice people. The rooms were very large, very beautiful and extremely clean. Loved so much that they had a poll and lots of land to walk Tundra our Siberian Husky that had a great time. Breakfast was outstanding! A MUST place to go and we will for sure go back. Thank you so very much for everything you guys did for us.
Marcia
The room could use some detail cleaning (like behind the sinks and toilets). This was seen in the public areas too (like the fireplace hearth in the dining room). It would have been nice to have more irons and boards instead of having to walk to another building. Also - the clock in our room didn't work correctly, we tried to surprise each other with gifts in the room and the keeper told the us separately about the other's gifts. In addition, we had some meal requests (like no meat) that were confirmed by Thomas (who was cooking) before serving us but yet he still served us meat as a side to the breakfast (not a big deal and kind of funny but something that wouldn't happen most other places).
The keepers were super nice and the structure of the building was beautiful. The keepers tried to make everything enjoyable and were very knowledgeable about the area. They offered a lot of helpful materials as well as snacks throughout the stay.
I recently stayed at the Garden and Sea B&B Inn in New Church. The Renn's were so welcoming and had such great hospitality. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the grounds were simply wonderful. The breakfast was delighful and I enjoyed the chance to speak a little German. I would definitely stay there again if I am in the area.
We had a vacation planed to the beach and I really was trying to look for a beautiful B&B this place was beautiful and the rates were much less then others in the area. The Innkeepers were so wonderful and helpful in planing events. I cant wait to go again!
Thomas and Dorothee are the perfect hosts. We were married in front of the Meditation area on the grounds of the Garden and Sea Inn on July 14, 2012. We have nothing but good things to say about the room, food, grounds and friendly Innkeepers. Captain Spider did a great job with the service and we were able to relax and laugh. We highly recommend the Garden and the Sea Inn.
We have stayed in the Chincoteague area often and were very pleased with our decision to stay off-island at the Garden Sea B & B. It is an easy drive to the island from there and the pastoral setting with it's beautiful gardens and modernized Victorian home was a perfect respit after a busy day. Thomas and Doro are friendly and helpful, yet respect your privacy. The wonderful breakfast, including homemade yogurt with fresh fruit, was served to perfection. We definitely plan to stay at this B & B on our next visit to Chincoteague.
We are sad we could not have stayed the entire weekend to enjoy all the amenities offered... the pool looked so inviting and the breakfast was outstanding. Thomas and Dorothee are wonderful innkeepers, and I would recommend their B&B to all travellers, particularly those travelling with pets and children. Our suite was very private and clean.
Beautiful place with beautiful gardens and rooms! It was so nice and pet friendly and the owners were very helpful and friendly. The food was excellent and location was close enough to go to Chincoteague but away from the crowds. Very relaxing. Pool was very nice and it had a kennel next to it for the dog to be right there which was great. Will definitely go back!
The Garden and Sea Inn is a wonderful B&B. The Chardonnay Room on the first floor has a very spacious bathroom (handicapped accessible too) with a cathedral ceiling and skylights over the jacuzzi. We also occupied the Merlot Room on the second floor, which is also lovely with a jacuzzi. The innkeepers are very attentive to all details and make magnificent breakfasts (eggs benedict with smoked salmon and asparagus one day, banana pancakes with homemade blueberry syrup the next, and a delicious bacon quiche with a buttermilk biscuit on the last day). Most importantly to us, they have made every consideration for pets, including pet treats, bowls, towels and blankets! Pets are not allowed in the pool area, so they have outdoor runs/kennels. Another unique feature of this B&B is the ability to use a small kitchen and dining room in the Garden House. Since we had our dog with us, which complicates dining out, we were able to get some seafood take-out at the nearby Ray's Seafood Shack and bring it back to our inn's dining room. The innkeepers also provided helpful information on pet-friendly restaurants, beaches, and boat rides. We took all their advice and were very happy!
Dorothee and Tom are great hosts. The rooms are beautifully decorated. The breakfasts are delicious. They are a very pet-friendly B & B. We travel with our two dogs and they loved staying here. The pool was nice and so are the grounds. Tom and Dorothee helped us with dinner suggestions and places to visit. They know the area very well. We are coming back to celebrate Valentine's Day in 2013.
Great Place away from the crowds but still close enough to enjoy all the things the area has to offer. The inn keepers made some great recommendation. You have to try Bloxum Winery
The inn is charming: the bedroom is spacious and carefully appointed; the breakfast is gourmet food; the hosts are gracious; the service is first rate. We would urge travelers anywhere in the area to take advantage of this special accommodation.
We stayed in the Chardonnay Room on Thursday 6/14 and Friday 6/15/2012! Mr. and Mrs. Renn were very gracious hosts and helped make our visit to Chincoteauge Island interesting and enjoyable! The accommodations were as advertised, roomy, clean and with the decor of olden times plus modern day conveniences! The morning meals were new to us in name but were very tasty to the palate! We wouldn't hesitate to stay there in the future!
The breakfast was just fabulous! Dorothy is an excellent cook! We had a relaxing afternoon by the pool. The only complant would be the water pressure for the shower could be better. We had a great time!
We spent a long weekend at the Garden & Sea to attend a family affair. Dorothee and Thomas were great hosts, they directed us to wonderful restaurants, a winery and multiple shopping venues. Our Shiraz suite was wonderful and so were the breakfasts that they serve.
Garden and Sea provided the perfect setting for our R&R. This serene New Church establishment offers indoor and outdoor serenity that you cannot find at all B&B accommodations. The host and hostess were congenial, but inconspicuous unless needed for advice. Thomas was the ideal host and man can that Dorothee cook!!
Warm welcome. Spacious, perfectly clean, well appointed rooms. Each day the breakfast had a distinctive, delicious "German touch," befitting the baskground of the Renns. We enjoyed having private tables for breakfast. The gardens are beautiful, a good place for enjoying quiet conversation over a bottle of wine.
We knew that Chincoteague is 11 miles from the inn (and the national seashore is still further). The drive isn't bad but is sufficiently long to discourage multiple trips in a day, although we did so. We see a trade-off: the convenience of being in Chincoteague vs. this inn's quiet and peacefulness (even if the inn is only a block off the main highway) , spacious rooms, and better value. We're happy we made this choice.
It simply wouldn't be summer without a stay at The Garden and Sea Inn. Once more, Thomas and Dorothee made every detail of our stay perfect! For seven summers -- and multiple stays in between -- our Shelties have enjoyed marvelous getaways with us in the most exquisite rooms imaginable. The back area gets more lovely every year, with little magical nooks and shady byways. Evenings on the porch, enjoying the quiet, fragrant garden is a special treat. Of course, it goes without saying that the food is beyond belief! Our visit was restful, relaxing -- and with Chincoteague and Assateague so close, we had the perfect Eastern Shore holiday. Come -- you'll fall in love with this little slice of heaven.
me an my husband spent his 60th birthday there this past weekend we also brought along our chiinchilla chewey he loved the screened porch so i could let out him an run around an the next morning for breakfast she had a small cup of peanut butter for him we will diff stay again
My wife and I spend a very pleasant and relaxing weekend at the Garden and the See B&B. The owners are very pleasant who make a wonderful breakfast and tasty freshly baked cookies. The B&B is a nice, quiet property with large rooms, and short driving distance to destinations along the shore. A very pleasant place to get away from it all if you want (they have free, reasonably fast Wi-Fi if you want to stay connected).
My partner Richard and I choose the Garden and the Sea during a quick trip from Atlanta to visit my family who lives on the Eastern Shore. I was thrilled to find this treasure in New Church only minutes from my family's home in Parksley.
We were thrilled from the moment we arrived. The accomodations were clean, well appointed and charming. We stayed in the Lighthouse room in the Garden House; I started and ended each day on the enclosed balcony just taking in the peace and quiet of the surroundings. The double sink bathroom enhanced our visit by making it possible to each of us to have our areas as neat and/or as messy as we wanted :).
Dorothy and Thomas are cut from the perfect Innkeepers mold. They get hospitality and customer service. After only minutes we felt as though we had been old friends who had not seen each other in awhile. The breakfast and evening snacks along with many thoughtful touches throughout our stay made for a wonderful visit home. We had three family visitors who were equally as thrilled by the G&S and plan to recommend them whenever the occasion arises.
Dorothy and Thomas, we wish you continued success because we plan to be repeat guests whenever we travel to Virginia. Thank you for your loving spirits and hospitality.
P.S. If you are looking for a romantic getaway, you have to see the Chardonnay room-I wanted to take that bathroom, dismantle it and bring it back to Atlanta.
Tschüss Thomas and Dorothy-until the next time.
Michelle and Richard
We have stayed there in years past and wanted to visit since the new
owenership and we were delighted with all the new upgrades to our
room since we last visited. Dorothy and Tom are great hosts.
My husband & I had a very enjoyable stay at the Garden and the Sea! Dorothee & Thomas were excellent hosts, & made sure every detail was taken care of. We stayed in the new Merlot room, which was perfectly appointed, with an enormous bathroom! The breakfast both mornings of our stay was simply delicious!! We felt like we were visiting old friends ~ the conversation always so enjoyable. The grounds were so beautiful & offered a very relaxing setting. After staying in several other B&B's in Charlottesville & the Outer Banks, - Garden and Sea stands out above them all!! We'll definitely be back to this beautiful inn.
Since we have a fairly new rescue dog, my husband and I were looking for a long weekend away where our pup would be welcome -- the Garden and Sea Inn was perfect. Not only were the room and grounds lovely, but the owners were very knowledgeable about the surrounding area and were able to quickly point us to dog-friendly beaches, wineries, and restaurants. It was a bit of a drive to get everywhere, but it was worth it to have such an easy, lovely trip.
My wife and I as well as our 12-YO German Shepherd spent our 38th Wedding Anniversary staying with Dorothee and Thomas in the Garden and the Sea Inn over the Memorial Day weekend. It was fantastic. The amenities and the breakfasts were excellent and their German hospitality was front and center throughout our stay. The inn is strategically located near Chincoteague, Assateague and only 25 miles from the Tangier Island ferry. We went to all three. Pets are welcomed in Chicoteague, the MARYLAND side of the Assateague National Wildlife Refuge and Tangier Island. Our dog was also welcomed on the boat and ferry rides.
I am trying to convince my wife that we must go back very soon, Dorothee and Thomas: We will definitely be back.
This B&B is beautiful. Great rooms, beautifully decorated and very clean. Great if you want to spend your vacation with your dog!!
We didn´t like the location. You need the car to go anywhere!!!
We were extremely pleased with our stay at Garden and Sea B&b Inn. Dorothee and Thomas were very pleasant, went out of their way to make you feel comfortable and special. I was sick the first day and they were very concerned about my well being which made me feel better. Our dog was also pleased. She loved it - the special treats and being able to chase those bunnies was her highlight.
We just loved that at the end of the day and we wanted a little snack, there were always home-made cookies, goodies and drinks for our pleasure.
Would I go back - A RESOUNDING "YES".
Thank you for making our stay wonderful.
This is a late review...as we stayed at this amazing Inn on our anniversary weekend in February. As we usually stay on the island, we were amazed to have missed this gem when I found it on the Internet. Of course, being from Austria, I was extra thrilled to find out I would get the added bonus of speaking my native language for a while (making my husband wonder what horrible things I was saying about him on our anniversary...just kidding- he DOES understand more than he pretends so). If you are missing out on this BnB I pity you: the rooms are comfortable, spacious, have all the best comforts of home. Breakfast was served in our room (seasonal) and took our breath away. Thomas and Doro gave us an amazing tour of the house- Plus history lesson. We are planning to return to check out the pool and next time we will bring our kids and dogs. Thomas and Doro provide their guests not only with outstanding hospitality- but also suggestions were to take the four legged family members.
I cannot wait to visit again soon!- Birgit from Maryland
We thoroughly enjoyed our three days and nights. We brought our dog along since she is such a good traveling companion. Dorothee and Thomas (Innkeepers) treated all us us wonderfully. The flowers in the gardens were gorgeous, breakfast each morning was relaxing and DELICIOUS, the beds were just a s firm as we like them. The innkeepers were very helpful in directing us to the best-suited activities in the area that weekend. We didn't want to leave. We look forward to another relaxing visit before long. Many thanks for all the hospitality.
Garden and Sea Inn is in a great central location for everything on the eastern shore. We stayed in the yellow house. It was quiet, private and the bed was very comfortable. Thomas and Dorothee are wonderful innkeepers. They are very knowledgeable about the area and made great recomendations. They are also very friendly and fun to talk to. Dorothee is a FANTASTIC cook. The german pancakes she made were awesome! We will definately stay there again. The Parkers
We came on a quiet day and I was able to peek into many of the rooms. They are all as charming, clean and welcoming as they appear in the photos. We stayed in the Merlot room. The bed was very comfortable and the jacuzzi tub is wonderful. The location of the inn is not right near the beach, but within an easy driving distance. The inn and grounds embody charm and tranquility which invite you to never leave. Each breakfast was a unique and delicious experience. The innkeepers are very personable with extremely helpful knowledge about local options, and work hard to make each guest feel welcomed.
We wanted a weekend getaway that included our cardigan welsh corgi. We all had a great time. We loved the front porch swing and Lily loved the green space to play ball and chase the bunny rabbits. The breakfasts were delicious and just the right size. The room was large enough to accommodate Lily's crate without it being in the way. We left relaxed and happy. J&L from Washington DC
Love visiting Thomas and Dorothee! They are always superb hosts. I would recommend this beautiful Bed & Breakfast to anyone and everyone looking to stay at one. It is well worth the 2 hour drive to unwind and spend some alone time with the one you love.
Thanks again, Thomas and Dorothee!!! We look forward to seeing you again next year, if not sooner ;)
This was my first visit to the area and there will definitely be many more. My wife and I visited in the offseason for 2 nights and thomas and dorothee made sure we knew of all the great local places to enjoy while we were in town (even given the poor weather this made for one of the most relaxing weekends I can remember) . The breakfasts were 2 of the best I have ever eaten, the complimentary snack bar was the perfect touch for our late arrival as well as the chilled bottle of wine waiting when we arrived. I will be a repeat customer for sure!!!
Everything about our recent stay was outstanding. The room was spacious and luxurious and included an amazingly comfortable bed. The grounds are beautiful. The location is a bit off the beaten bath and hidden on a small side road, perfect for a relaxing getaway. The breakfast was amazing and catered to our dietary needs. The owners are very friendly and seem to put their guests' happiness first, but they are also hands-off so that you can enjoy the serenity of your stay. And it's got to be the best value of anywhere to stay in the Chincoteague area. As much as I'd love this place to stay my secret, I felt like Thomas and Dorothee deserved to be rewarded for all their effort in making it one of the best stays I've ever had.
we totally enjoyed our stay at the garden and sea inn..delicious breakfasts, clean and comfy room, jacuzzi and white terry robes. The owners are so friendly and helpful. And the pet friendliness is a real plus. The only upgrade would be a closed off bathroom with exhaust fan in the shiraz suite. thanks again thomas and doro.. were had a great time
Charming - proprietors are wonderful and dog friendly
I love this B&B. It's really old and authentic. The proprietors are SO friendly and they love dogs. They go the extra mile to make my stay perfect. I liked it so much, I went back and got married there. It's so friendly, if you've been to a guesthaus in Germany, it feels like that. Like family taking care of you.
This B&B had the best breakfast of any B&B that we have been to, and that has been quite a few. I am gluten free and they accommodated me very nicely. They also allow dogs for no extra fee as long as they are well behaved. We would go there again.
[Resource Id: InnkeeperResponse, Set: reviews] Thank you for the nice review! Unfortunately, one detail is not correct anymore. Starting 2012 we have invented a pet fee. We simply DO need more time to clean a room with dogs. And we feel it is unfair to our other guests to make them pay for that.
We charge a $25 one time fee, no matter how many dogs you bring and how many nights you stay with us. We think this is reasonable and hope for our guests understanding.

The innkeepers are wonderful, congenial people who really know the local area and can recommend lots of things to do. The inn is in really good shape and the food was outstanding. I would not hesitate to go back!
Beautiful room and grounds. The innkeepers were very hospitable-even paid careful attention to my dietary restrictions. Very romantic and private. The German breakfasts were a welcome change from the ordinary. We will definitely visit again.
We spent two relaxing days here the first weekend in December, 2011. Dorothee and Thomas were very friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was WONDERFUL both days. Their recommendation on where to have a nice romantic dinner was spot on. Lovely property. Highly recommended.

This inn is quite wonderful. The innkeepers could not be any more helpful or polite. The breakfasts were tasty and filling and something you won't see at a run of the mill B&B. It was a comforting and relaxing stay. Hope you like a firm mattress though - that is my only complaint.
My new wife and I went to The Garden and The Sea Inn for our honeymoon in late November. It was an excellent place to unwind and relax. The Eastern Shore is a great autumn getaway! It's definitely a slower pace of life this time of year. The food was absolutely amazing and the rooms were immaculate! Thank you, Thomas and Doro!

This past weekend, my husband and I stayed in the main house in the B&B’s Chardonnay Room. I can't speak to other rooms on the property, but we were very impressed with the Chardonnay Room. The best feature about that room was the 2 person Jacuzzi tub. The property has all the decorative appeal of a Victorian home with some modern day pleasure as well.
Another feature of the B&B that exceeded our expectations was the wireless internet capability. When we planned this weekend we noticed most places did not offer such services and we worried about the broadband speed. We both work fulltime and our students, there was no way to avoid bring our working with us during a weekend vacation. However, we were able to complete our studies in the calm and quiet atmosphere of a B&B. The internet service was easy to access and the connection speed was adequate.
The food was amazing. The owners were extremely accommodating to me being a vegetarian. They made deliciously creative meals that were still healthy – a must in my book. They also offered room service if desired. Upon request, the B&B staff placed a bottle of wine the room refrigerator. The wine was chilled and ready for us to drink upon arrival. No further was direction was needed to meet this request.
The owners have substantial knowledge of the local area and offered great advise of what to see and do during our stay as well.
The only downside, if you can really call it that, was the drapes over the windows. If sunlight bothers you in the morning, you may not want to stay in the Chardonnay room. There were blinds and lace curtains, but the light still came through enough to wake someone in the morning.
We plan on returning for sure. Thanks!

Our stay at the Garden and Sea Bed and Breakfast was very relaxing and quiet. Not far from the Bay or the Ocean, a perfect spot to be just minutes away from each. Dorthee and Thomas are warm hosts. We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them and enjoy their home! We DO hope to go back!
We spent a beautiful Fall weekend at the Garden&Sea B&B Inn and enjoyed every moment. The owners are lovely - very welcoming and service oriented. We came with two small children and we know that not every B&B accept that - here we felt very comfortable. A lot of thought was given to the small details and it definitely makes you feel that someone wants you to enjoy your stay to the max. The breakfast was delicious! Although the place is located in a residential area, it was very easy and quick to get from there to the nearby Assateague attractions. A great place we would love to come back to!
My wife and I stayed here just over a year ago...in September when I popped the question! To this day it is the best B & B we've ever stayed at. Thomas & Doro were so incredibly sweet & they made us feel right at home. Thomas makes the best breakfast - hands down! I highly recommend this Inn...and I hope to return very soon!
We stayed here on a cold, dreary weekend in October and still had a great time. Innkeepers are very welcoming and know the area well. Breakfasts are fantastic. An easy drive to Chincoteague or Assateague. Dog friendly. Would definitely stay here again if we are in the area.
So surprised that this B & B was so nice and they accept dogs. Stayed on our way to South Carolina and then again on the way back. We were given an upgrade free of charge on our return trip. We had a lovely room with a semi-private porch at no extra charge. Dorothy and Thomas were very friendly and they love dogs. Food was terrific. The first morning we had to leave before breakfast but Dorothy made up a tray (juice and delicious muffins, coffee and tea) so we could eat quickly and be on our way. Next time we will plan a full weekend here as we didn't get to go to beach to see the horses. Even my dog had a good time.
This was our first experience at a B & B. Thomas and Dorothee have set the bar very high for the next one we visit. Peaceful location, relaxing room (the Chablis suite), delicious breakfast (try the homemade yogurt mixed w/ the granola, I couldn't get enough), and the obvious effort they put into making our stay the best it could be. Charming couple! We would recommend this B & B to everyone (and already have!).
My husband and I stayed at the Inn over Columbus weekend. We were completely impressed with our room (Champagne) and the staff. Doro and Thomas were great! They offered us advice on local attractions and were more than welcoming. The breakfasts were exceptional. We were treated to several German dishes as well as fresh fruit, yogurt, breads and cereals every morning. I had read great reviews but was still skeptical. I didn't believe a B&B could actually receive such a high rating from so many visitors but, after staying there for four days I didn't want to leave. Five stars seems insufficient for such an outstanding experience! We will definitely be back!
We chose this B&B for it's pet-friendly attitude and proximity to the Eastern Shore. The innkeepers were wonderful, the rooms were very clean and breakfast was great...Eggs Benedict one day, a great German pastry on the next. The gardens and decor were beautiful and I loved the basket of "dog towels" on the porch to wipe their feet. We will be back.
As usual, my sister and I had a very pleasurable time staying at this most comfortable bed and breakfast. We relaxed by swimming at the refreshing pool and truly enjoyed the European breakfasts the Renns provided, not to mention the fine camaraderie we shared with them. The accommodations were excellent: the bathroom was always clean; the bed was always made. We appreciate their friendship and hospitality and would like to return again next summer, perhaps with a canine addition.
My wife and I had a most memorable experience at Garden and Sea! The setting is very comfortable, our room was even more so, and breakfast was delish every day. Our pups knew where our home away from home was after just a couple days. The area abounds in activities and great food which our hosts were very helpful with information and recommendations.
Only 20 minutes from Assateague Beach. Better than staying in town on Chincoteague where traffic is noisy and rooms are small.
Rooms are large, Breakfast is European in flavor, and swimming pool is nice. It is pet-friendly.
We stayed three nights holidaying (sorry, vacationing) in Eastern Viginia on our way from Richmond to Philly and were truly impressed by the care the innkeepers put into making the stay memorable. From the rooms to the pool or the breakfast, there was obviously a lot of effort put into even the smallest details. Bath salts ? Check. Loan of beach towels ? Check. Cookies and tea in the garden house. That too... A nice respite betwen two stays in chain hotels. If there is a down side to be found at all, it might be in the relative proximity of I-13 (you can hear the traffic at night) or perhaps in the absence of much activity in the rest of New Chuch where the B&B is situated. But otherwise a really memorable stay !
Beautiful rooms and grounds, excellent service and a phenomenal breakfast each morning. The only negatives were the below average showers and the distance to Assateague Island, but both those things are more than made up for by the positives. If you're going to the area would highly recommend, especially if traveling with a dog as it's extremely pet friendly and my dog loved the environment.
[Resource Id: InnkeeperResponse, Set: reviews] Thank you very much for the nice review! But may we ask for some help? We don't really know what you mean with "below average showers"... We have standard sized showers and separate jacuzzis in our king rooms and Suites and we have standard sized jacuzzi/shower-combinations in our queen size rooms. Unfortunately you did not leave the room name, so we are a little clueless, where to start... Please drop us a line what exactly it was that needs improvement. We'd be more than happy to look into it! Thanks!!!

This dog-friendly B&B was wonderful--great food, friendly but non-intrusive hosts, well-kept environment and pleasant surroundings throughout. We had a great stay!
We stayed at the Garden & Sea B&B in July 2011 when we wanted to visit Chicoteague and bike ride on Assateague Island. We found it on-line when we were looking for places in the area that were "pet-friendly." We did not end up bringing our dog this trip, but will next time. They have everything they advertise - a nice outdoor fenced kennel area (where your pet can run if you decide to enjoy the nice pool), a little bar area in one of the sitting areas where you can prepare your dog's meals, and a really pretty large, mowed space in the back of the property (perfect for playing fetch). The Inn is on a block with other homes, so you can take your pet out to stretch his or her legs.
The innkeepers are very friendly (the hosts recommended a local restaurant that was very low-key and had delicious crabcakes) and the breakfast features, yogurt, fruit, granola and a German speciality of the morning. It was really good and beautifully presented both mornings.
This was my first B& B experience. I'd recommend it to all!
Just wonderful! Can't say enough good about our whole experience! Loved it! I loved that it was only 15 - 20 minutes from Chincoteague, and we could escape to this charming, quiet setting, with luxurious bedroom and bathroom, whirlpool tub, georgous gardens and inviting pool! Breakfast was excellent - a perfectly seasoned feta and vegetable omelet, yogurt with fruit and granola, and strong coffee! My husband and I highly recommend the Renn's Bed & Breakfast over any other option! It was as affordable as the Hoiliday Inn Express up the road, but far exceeds anything for service, friendliness, quality and a beautiful ambience! Not only was the Victorian home just what we wanted - we are looking forward to booking the Garden House when we bring our girls next time! Thanks so much Thomas and Doro!
The Garden and Sea Inn was a wonderful experience. The rooms were beautiful and spacious, the innkeepers were very accomodating, the property was beautiful. I felt relaxed and taken care of the entire time.

My husband and I stayed in the Chablis Room for our honeymoon back in Sept 2005 (we are from Philadelphia). The room and grounds are beautiful and the owner (I only met the wife) was extremely accommodating and friendly. Not only is it near Chincoteague, it's also only about a half hour away from Ocean City, MD. I honestly can not say one bad thing about this place. We really enjoyed ourselves and plan on definitely spending another weekend there soon (especially now that I know they are dog friendly!)
I can't get over telling friends about the Garden and See B&B! We have never vacationed with our dog and I was a little concerned that we would have to give up on quality to go to a dog-friendly B&B. Not so! Garden and Sea is beautiful and of the high standards I expect of a B&B, with the added bonus of being accommodating to dogs.
Each room is immaculate with wonderful touches. We liked the sitting room in the Garden Cottage where one can have a port and biscuits while your dog has a treat! The heated pool has a dog run adjacent so your four-legged friend can keep an eye on you. The public phones include the numbers of animal doctor and hospital. The Innkeepers happily share information about dog & owner activities - including Daisy's boat service (tour of Chincoteague), eateries, and beaches.
Garden & Sea takes care to provide all those little niceties - lovely breakfast, beautiful gardens with bubbling fountains, porch chairs, walking paths, and gracious, informative hosts.
Definitely will return. Highly recommend for those with, or without pets!
We had a wonderful time at the Garden and Sea Inn. Our 70 lb. puppy felt right at home in the Shiraz suite and we loved having our own little yard. It was great to roam around the property and see the other dog lovers out and about. They thought of nice touches for dog owners, like a pool side kennel to keep Fido within sight and sound distance and provided doggie towels and blankets. The nearby State Parks and National Seashore were amazing, as were seeing the wild ponies. Some parks even permitted our dog to come explore on the beach with us. Breakfasts by Thomas and Doro are outstanding and delicious, and they were VERY accomodating to everyone. A beautifully kept property!

Wife and I just spent a four great days at the Garden and the Sea! Thomas and Dorothee could not have been better host and hostess. We stayed in the Chablis Suite and it was perfect! The two rooms were large, clean and comfortable. Each morning we had coffee on our private deck and then went to the main house for a fabulous breakfast. We used the pool two different days. It was clean and water temperature was great.
Since it was our anniversary, I called ahead and asked if they could have roses in the room with a personalized card. It was not problem for them to do. Roses were perfect and there when we arrived.
Easy access to Chincoteague Island and all of the rest of the must see places in the area.
We will be back!

Garden and Sea is a very special place. The rooms and grounds were impeccible, the service extaordinary and the dining experience was delicious.
Anyone traveling near the national seashore parks in Va/ Md should really consider staying here instead of the chain hotels. The innkeepers were extremely helpful and friendly and even gave us an orientation tour at 10 pm.
And furthermore they are very pet friendly. Don't miss this gem if you are nearby.
My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon just over a year ago. It was the perfect location - so close to Chincoteague, yet so private to allow us to acclimate to being married. We're discussing starting a family within the next year and we have already decided that once we do get pregnant we are going to take a trip back to the Garden & Sea Inn just the two of us for one last stroll down memory lane. Also, DO NOT miss the breakfast if you stay here. I'm a self described breakfast hater but this place made me a total believer!
We stayed 4 days at the Garden & Sea Inn with Doro and Thomas and it was definitely the high point of our 2-week-vacation. We loved the house and the rooms as well as the extraordinary breakfast! You can literally experience the Victorian Age - and you can really SEE the love for details! It is just gorgeous! Thanks so much for making our vacation something special! We'll definitely be back! :) All our love from Germany!
My wife and I stayed the weekend at the Inn for our 22nd anniversary. It was my wife's first B&B experience. Thomas and Dorothee set the bar high for future B&B experiences to come. They paid special attention to our needs and were a delightful hosts. The accomodations were well kept, comfortable, and serene. We will go back again.
So happy we picked this B&B. It was our first time staying at one, so we really did not have much else to compare it to, but this was such a charming place. We were a little wary before coming, being that it was "dog-friendly," however if we had not known, we would have had NO IDEA that animals were allowed on the premises. Everything was so neat and CLEAN...there wasn't even a trace of dog smell anywhere. The breakfast was absolutely delicious and Dorothee and Thomas were such wonderful hosts! The decor in the rooms was also very understated but pretty--not overdone or antiquated like we'd seen at some of the other B&B's. We stayed in the sandpiper room...very sweet and cozy, and I loved that we had 2 very plush bathrobes waiting for us when we arrived. Even though the pool was not very big (only 3'-5'), it was very clean and the water temp was PERFECT. All around a fantastic place!
This B&B is maintained impeccably. Unlike other B&Bs we've been in, this one has maintained its historic charm without being stuffy or feeling "old." The rooms are huge and comfortable and ours had a jacuzzi tub which was a welcome relief after a day searching graveyards on a geneaology search. Bring your bug spray, as this is the Northern Neck and if you want to enjoy the beautiful gardens, hammock, and pool area, you'll need to keep the spray handy. Dorothea is an amazing cook. Being of German descent, the dishes are hearty. I'm not a meat or heavy eater, so chose instead to enjoy the homemade yogurt, gourmet granola, and fresh fruit offered every morning. I also enjoyed picking fresh mint leaves for my tea. Our room was part of the original structure built in the early 1800's, but you would never have known it given the beautiful restorations that have been done and our huge bathroom which was added on in the 90's. We look forward to going back and trying another room just for a different experience.
I absolutely enjoyed my stay at the Garden and Sea Inn. I had never been to the area and found the Inn online. I was pleasantly surprised. The owners are kind and welcoming and provided a delicious breakfast. The Inn is very dog friendly and fairly centrally located. We didn't want to leave the Inn and honestly, we had no need to--everything we needed was there. A dog run, hammock, porch, books and games. I would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a few days away.

When you travel a lot... around the country or around the world, it is always such a pleasure to stay in a place that offers comfort and beauty in addition to cleanliness and good service. But every now and then, the Universe directs you to a place that exceeds your expectations and stands out for its sheer beauty and elegance. ~ The Garden and the Sea Bed and Breakfast is actually far lovelier than its photos on the website and those were very good photographs. I treated myself to a luxurious stay in the Chantilly Room on the top floor of the new house, overlooking a green pasture and a generous field of wheat. Sitting on a private little porch in the cool early morning made for a wonderfully meditative way to start my day of teaching dance workshops in Pocomoke City. I was able to wander through many of the rooms and common spaces of the three buildings at this B&B. You will not believe the exquisite and thoughtful appointments in each room... so many details of beauty and much care, wherever you eye rests. ~ And the grounds are such a delight with the various little ponds, a swing in a shady little nook and the fragrance of so many roses as you walk the path to the precious swimming pool. ~ Let me end by saying that the food and the coffee offered for breakfast in the spacious, brightly elegant dining room was not just good...it was 'gourmet'. ~ And that all of this is available in this little tiny town of New Church, Virginia, that many folks speed right by on Rte 13 S on their way to Chincoteague
Island... makes it feel like an unexpected treasure gifted just to you personally.
I truly feel blessed ~ Maria Broom

Innkeepers Thomas and Doro went above and beyond all of our expectations to plan and execute the most beautiful, romantic wedding for us! We were fortunate enough to book all the rooms for our guests (overflow guests were conveniently booked at a hotel only 15 minutes from the Inn). Everything the Renn's did to help us prepare our special day was more than we would have asked for! Each bedroom was perfect - 100% of our guests raved about the comfort and cleanliness of the Inn. Even though we were late-nighters and constantly took over all the parlors and dining rooms, our innkeepers made us feel right at home with ever-flowing coffee, soft drinks, and snacks. The wedding meal was outrageously good - we offered our guests a choice of crabcakes or stuffed chicken breasts. The chef did an amazing job! Everything tasted better than if we were in an exclusive New York City restaurant! Our guests called the Chef out of the kitchen to give her a standing ovation! Thomas and Doro, we can never thank you enough for spoiling us the way you did and for making our wedding so memorable. You both have found your true calling in hospitality... we've never experienced anything like this before!!
For anyone planning a wedding, I can honestly and completely recommend you to consider the Garden and Sea Inn. I can't imagine anyone not being completely satisfied!
It was perfect!!!
The Garden and Sea is easy to get to, welcoming and a good value. The innkeepers were friendly, helpful and upbeat. The full morning breakfast was outstanding each day. The setting of multiple buildings and attractive, large common areas allows guests space to read, write, use computer on the wireless network or savior a drink at the end of the day. Cookies, beverages in the fridge, just like home. If you are in the area go see Dorothee and Thomas.
My boyfriend and I tremendously enjoyed our time here on the property and in the Chablis Suite. It was early Spring and the blooms were just opening and the crowds had yet to appear. We had a lot of privacy and the owners honored that but were available as needed. Breakfast was delicious and my Vegan man had plenty to eat as did I, a non vegetarian. The minor difficulty was that the bathroom was open ceiling and well, umm, privacy was an issue. Otherwise we can't wait to return again next Spring.
This was the cleanest and nicest bed and breakfast we have ever stayed at! The room was bright and colorful with all the conveniences of home. The snacks and drinks provided were an added perk. It was very quiet and peaceful and again very very clean....The innkeepers Tom and Dorothee could not possibly have been any more hospitable. They were warm and welcoming and have a great knowledge of the local area. The breakfasts were delicious. I would recommend this treasure to anyone interested in just getting away from it all. It was a 10!!!! Scott and Debbie B. New Jersey
We enjoyed our visit to the Garden and the Sea B&B. Thomas gave us a helpful introduction to the property and grounds, and made us feel right at home upon arrival. The breakfasts that Dorothee prepared were really delicious, and what we enjoyed the most, they were served to us in our room, so we didn't have to get dressed to eat. I was a bit disappointed not to stay in the original 1802 home, but our accommodations were great. I recommend it. And by not being far from Chincoteaque Island, it makes a good place to stay if that is your ultimate desination point.

My wife, dog and I were recently guests of Dorothee and Thomas Renn at the Garden and Sea Inn in New Church on Virginia’s Eastern shore. We chose this inn because it is pet friendly and we wanted to take our Newfoundland dog to the beach. Located on the property are two of the oldest homes in the county which, along with the grounds, create a very nice atmosphere that harkens back to the beginning of the 18th century. During the winter the rooms in the older house are not available, so we stayed in the modern Shiraz Suite which is very spacious and nicely appointed. The connected private dog area accessed through the bedroom is very convenient for pet owners.
We really like German food and the Renn’s did not disappoint. Each morning a nice breakfast was delivered to our suite. All of the breakfast entrees were new to us and we loved them all. The restaurant at the inn is not open during the winter so went to several local eateries that are listed in the inn’s guide book. All of the food was good and reasonably priced. As you would imagine, the seafood in the area is particularly good.
There is much to see in the area. Among the places we visited were Chincoteague Island and Cape Charles which is about an hour south.
We found our stay very relaxing and would definitely return
This was my second stay at the Garden and Sea Inn, and just like the first time, I enjoyed myself tremendously. My boyfriend and I went for a post-Valentine's Day getaway. The atmosphere is quiet and romantic. The food was delicious and it was so convenient to bring both of our dogs. We have already planned to go back this year for one of our birthdays and Valentine's Day next year.
My fionce and I decided to take a trip to escape the cold and visit Assateague/Chincoteague Island last weekend for a few nights. We stayed in the Shiraz suite. The room was very clean, larger and more spacious than we expected. It had a jacuzzi in the suite and the bedroom had a great view from the multiple windows in the suite. The gounds were well kept, and Dorothy and Thomas had great suggestions for things to do in the area. They were very welcoming! Breakfast was exceptional! My fionce requested a German breakfast and they were able to bring us an amazing and highly satisfying meal each morning. Their cornbread muffins were the best! We will definitely recommend the Garden and Sea Inn to all our friends and will definitely come back.
We enjoyed our stay immensely. They were very welcoming, helpful, informative and hospitable. It's a fabulous place to go with a dog. They have treats, towels and blankets just for dogs as well as a large garden area and information on where to go with dogs. The hot breakfast was brought to our room exactly on time and was delicious. The house has a lot of character and is well decorated and maintained. I would definitely recommend this B&B.
This was a fantastic bed and breakfast experience. The innkeepers were very personable - even though we arrived very late on a Friday night, they were still happy to give us an introductory tour of the property. Thought we didn't bring our dogs on this trip, we were really excited that the inn was so dog-friendly. They have everything you could need to make it easy to travel with your pet - dog blankets to do bowls. The inn was also exceptionally clean - a hard to find amenity in most dog-friendly establishments we've visited in the past. Kudos to the innkeepers. Last but not least I'd like to mention we really loved the breakfast - each morning we had a decent sized breakfast with a different German dish, all of which were very delicious. We will definitely be back.
G & S Bed and Breakfast was delightful. We stayed in the Champagne Room which was beautifully furnished and very comfortable. Thomas was welcoming and very helpful with his dining recommendations. The hot breakfasts were delicious, and since it was winter, were delivered to our door! The inn is very dog-friendly as well, with biscuits and dry food on hand, as well as towels to wipe muddy paws. The inn was very convenient to Chincoteague and Assateague and other attractions along VA's and MD's Eastern Shore. As delightful as it was in the winter with snow on the ground, it must be perfect in the warmer months!

We stayed with Dorothee and Thomas over the recent Thanksgiving weekend and had a great, relaxing time with delicious breakfast and a fabulous Thanksgiving dinner!
My wife and I stayed at the Garden and the Sea Inn for our Anniversary in mid-July and it was simply fantastic! We enjoyed everything about the Inn. It was far enough away from the hustle and bustle to provide a quiet, relaxing, private setting and yet close enough that a short drive took you to the beach and all the shore attractions - the best of both worlds! The rooms were clean and beautiful, the food was delicious, and the innkeepers were extremely hospitable! All around outstanding! We recommend it 100%
We had a great time and so did our pup! We stayed in the Champagne room which was very clean and large. It had a wonderful gas fire stove and a great jacuzzi tub. The property was gorgeous, we can't wait to go back in the warmer weather.
The Inn is not your typical B&B. It has everything that every other upscale B&B would have and then some, however, that is not what makes it stand out. The main attraction(s) is the professionalism and the courtesy of the innkeepers - Dorothy and Thomas, as well as the ever-present sensation of being surrounded by class. Classy is the best way to describe it. We truly enjoyed the levels of privacy and customer service no other B&B on the East Coast has extended to us in the past. The innkeepers and other guests are never in the way, however, the innkeepers are always available to answer questions and help out in any way they can. Great guest parlor with everything one needs - from kitchen utensils to home-made cookies to a complimentary tumbler of port. The pet-friendly aspect is also taken to a different lever by this B&B - thy have dog towels and complimentary dog treats, as well as area information about pet services and vets. The level of detail and the meticulous nature of service is what separates this Inn from others. Truly enjoyed our stay, Thomas and Dorothy are very accomodating and helpful. Definitely pick this place over anything else when travelling to the Eastern Shore - it is off the beaten path and out of the way of madness of the Chincoteague traffic in the summer. If you want to relax in a nice, non-intrusive, upscale but yet tame in a very classy way environment, this is the place to go. People who expect to get best value for their money will pick this place any day over any waterfront Hyatt or Hilton.
We had a lovely large suite in a separate building from the main house. It was very clean, private and pet friendly with a fenced yard for your pet. The king bed was perfect in comfort! Breakfasts were served hot and very delicious and we really enjoyed conversation with the host Tom! We reccommend this B&B!
This was a beautiful Victorian style house! The host and hostess were so nice and knowledgeable about the area. They told us the best place to see the ponies: Assateague State Park. We did get to see the ponies there! The hosts also made killer cherry pancakes and the coffee was VERY good. The room decorations were not as refined as the Victorian architecture but the room was comfortable. The bathroom was huge! Most important for me and my husband was the close proximity to Chincoteague without being IN Chincoteague. That downtown area of was very crowded with tourists. It was nice to visit but then retreat back to the quiet of the Garden and Sea Inn! We enjoyed our stay very much!
Innkeepers Thomas and Dorothee Renn have a great combination of days gone by and elegant ammenities for all guests they welcome at their B&B.(That includes your puppies too) The suites are large and tastefully decorated with correct period furnishings. The bathrooms have extras like jaccuzi tubs with separate showers or real clawfoot tubs too.The Inn is situated on a 4to5 acre parcel which provides manicured, wooded acres for dog walking in a setting that's far from traffic and very private in case your dog has a shy bladder. The pool even has a fenced run 20 foot away that makes a dip on a hot day with the dog nearby possible. In my younger days I worked my way thru college as a waiter.I was employed at Gallatin's in Monterey. At the time Gallatin's was the #1 restaurant in the US. Thomas and Dorothee have put together a dining room that compares to Gallatin's in service, setting and excellent food at a price that is more than reasonable.(Breakfast is complimentary) Along with a local Seafood Chef they have the correct combination that makes dining an artform and best of all, in a very intimate, victorian setting.I've never been on vacation that I couldn't wait to get back home; to my own bed and all the comforts of it--until now. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I WANTED TO STAY AND NOT GO HOME.Hate to sound like Arnold but "I'll be back." Charles E. Koons II and loving wife Dorene
Can you imagine three people, four dogs...and a perfect time? That's typical of the Garden and Sea Inn. Tom and Dorothy are graciousness personified. The Inn is charming and spotless; the rooms large and airy; and the food beyond belief! We stayed three nights and had dinner at the Inn on Saturday -- what a feast! Treat yourself to a wonderful getaway -- with or without the furkids!

I stayed at this little gem for 4 nights, just for a mental health break. I'd never stayed at a Bed and Breakfast before. Thomas and Dorothee were wonderful hosts. They were very helpful with ideas about things to do and see in the area. The rooms were charming. Dorothee cooks up a fabulous, creative, gourmet treat for breakfast every morning. I'm looking forward to my next little getaway.
we were so very happy with our stay will do it again so quiet peaceful and very relaxing Thomas and Dorothee made us really feel welcomed They have such a beatiful Bed and Breakfast I reccomend them highly great place for everyone even your pets are very welcomed They even provided towels and treats for your dog even a pen so they could have their excercise without worrying about them going toward the road Thank you so much Bill and Linda Pillsbury
We stayed at this B&B for our 20th anniversary. We wanted it to be a quiet, relaxing time. Thomas & Dorothee were very friendly and gracious. The food was superb. The bed was very comfortable. The location is convenient to Chincoteague. The hosts were helpful in answering questions about the area and offering suggestions about things to do. We would recommend the inn and plan to return for a short stay in the future.

Very short drive to Chincoteague and a dog beach. We stayed in the Shiraz suite and Thomas and Dorothee were absolutely outstanding. They were very amenable to our requests. My wife and I were looking for a relaxing getaway where we could take our dogs. We have rescue dogs with some issues and could not leave them alone in the room, Thomas and Dorothee made up a dinner basket for us twice so we did not have to out to eat. The suite also had a private fenced in area the dogs could do their business and a large yard to walk the dogs. We would definitely stay here again.
We felt totally at home-our room was clean and comfortable and we were even made to feel like our cocker spaniels were welcome guests with fresh towels at the front door. Breakfast was perfect and our innkeepers were wonderful hosts.
Can't say enough about Thomas and Dorothy. They are such warm and lovely people...they make your stay as comfortable for you as they can... part in part why we continue to come back time and again. Wish we could make it more often.... :) They will graciously stop and talk as much or as least as you like... The breakfasts are very filling and we love trying all of the different foods they prepare... Thomas' stories normally have me laughing so hard... (Kristine, we do have extra knives in the back! LOL) I have to say...the dinner was EXCELLENT! Sooo glad they started doing that... as we love the fact we can now walk to the main house to get Breakfast and Dinner! Brilliant! We had the Crab Cake and Steak two nights! We are from Maryland --where Crab Cakes are KING and these were INCREDIBLE.. Kudos to the chef! The rooms are comfortable and prepared nicely.... we have stayed in 3 different ones. My favorite is probably the Shiraz with the fenced in yard........This time was the Sandpiper Room.. LOVE the screened in porch for us to sit on with our Puppy! The grounds are also wonderful... after a nice breakfast, we would go for a walk before heading out for the day. It's a nice walk.. you see bunnies and nature and beautiful flora... 2 lovely little frog ponds on the property.....The pool is also very good...it's heated.. on the smaller side, but no one was ever in there when we went in... Even their staff is genuinely kind and nice to talk with!
Needless to say.....our stay was GREAT. Can't wait to come back again...and have nothing but good things to say about our weekend there. If you like a charming B&B with GREAT innkeepers with personality, stay here! See you soon Thom and Dorothy! Kristine, Keith, Sam & Coco
with lots of attention to details of service and decor. The food was really wonderful. The owners were especially nice to our dog, too. This was our first stay at a B&B and we were happy we tried it.
Marge, Reston
Upon arrival, the innkeepers give you a complete tour of the facilities personally. There are two common rooms that you can access 24/7. the garden house has freshly baked cookies for you and dog treats for your dog! They have a swimming pool with a fenced in kennel in the shade for your dogs so you can take a quick dip within sight of them.
Thomas is a riot, very funny guy - and the accent is TO DIE FOR!
Its a beautiful property, everything was very clean and there are even paths to walk your dogs along in the back yard, with convenient poop bags.
The breakfasts-wow. I've never had such awesome quiche in my life. The omelets were fabulous too!
If you want to bring your dog on vacation with you and you don't have a dog with separation anxiety or dog/dog aggression issues - seriously come here!
We spent two wonderful days at the Garden and Sea B&B. The room was very big and cosy, in a building with a wonderful living room, a refrigerator filled with drinks and snacks. The house had a special aura. We brought our little dog and felt right at home. The place is terrific for travellers with dogs. The innkeepers were charming and very welcoming. The breakfast was great. It is definitely worth a stay.
Can't think of a better place to celebrate our anniversary!
From start to finish our stay at The Garden and The Sea B&B was most excellent. The greeting and tour by Thomas Renn, the outdoor pool, the dinner on Saturday night, which was OUTSTANDING, the breakfasts, the quiet and peace, the cleanliness......could go on and on, but suffice it say that even without a pet, this was the very best place, the perfect spot, for us to spend our 30th anniversary weekend. We recommend it highly, and thank Dorothee and Thomas for a "memory maker" anniversary vacation.

Beautiful historical inn near Chincoteague, Va. Easy access to the beach town without the crowd. Close to the bay and route 13 for alternative day trips. Great meals and hosts. Ideal for those guests traveling with pets.
We have found the perfect place to stay when visiting the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The Garden and Sea innkeepers are wonderful hosts, generous and helpful. Close to all the local attractions, the Inn is a great place to headquarter, and the outdoor pool and wide porches invite lingering over a good book, the sunset, or a glass of delicious port. Having special dietary needs, we were especially gratified at the effort made to provide fabulous alternatives for both breakfast and dinner. We've already recommended the Garden and Sea to several people!
We had a wonderful forth of July weekend. Even paying less than any hotel. Breakfast was wonderful, homemade everything, even soy milk for me. Beds are phenomenal! Beautiful couple owns the place. Thank you Dorethee and Thomas -jess

What a great place. We have stayed and B & Bs and I can tell you that here you WILL NOT go hungry! Plenty to eat adn comfortable. You have a two hour window to come on in and you feel as if you were at a restaurant. We enjoyed the pool, a rare thing at a B&B and the cookies, muchies and Port wine for us to drink at our leisure. For those who love pets, they allow them. around the pond with fish and frogs you could smell what appeared to be cat pee that was distracting. Asisde for that, and excellent place and location. Definitely you'll get your moneys worth.
[Resource Id: InnkeeperResponse, Set: reviews] Thanks a lot for the nice review! I just feel I have to explain the smell around the pond. We have boxwood bushes around the pond, some probably more than 100 years old. THIS is where the smell comes from. Not often, but sometimes boxwoods have a strange oder to them. Just google for "Boxwood smell" and you will see.
My husband & I & our 2 Papillion pups recently spent 2 nights at the Garden and the Sea B&B Inn.
Innkeepers Thomas & Doro were very nice and attentive to details. Couldn't think of a better place to stay with pets. Upon arrival they were provided with a bowl, can of dog food & treats. There was a basket of towels on the porch for the dog's use, an outdoor kennel next to the pool, a large mowed area and paths to walk them and a bag dispenser on an outer building for picking up after them.
Us humans were no less cared for with a welcoming bottle of wine and nice ammenities in the room including a mini-fridge, coffee maker and bathrobes.
In the guest house parlor we were provided with a carafe of wine, soft drinks, bottled water, homemade cookies and a variety of packaged snacks and candy for all house guests anytime we wanted them.
The room was clean and comfortable with ample space.
We did not eat dinners there, but the breakfasts were wonderful. First was a self-serve buffet of cereal, sweet breads, fruit and juice. Coffee was delivered to our beautifully set table by Thomas. When we were ready, the main course was brought out and it was attractively presented and delicious.
The inn is located within convenient driving distance to Chincoteague, Assateague and Ocean City.
Overall we would highly recommend this Inn for anyone wanting to stay in the area but especially for those with pets.

We have just arrived home after a four day stay at the Garden and Sea Inn in New Church, Virginia. This was to be our only vacation of the Summer, and we chose to experience a Bed and Breakfast for the first time.
The folks at Garden and Sea Inn certainly did not disappoint! Our rooms were lovely, with a huge and comfortable bed, and likewise a huge and comfortable bathroom. The whirlpool tub and over sized walk in shower were both treats.
The dining room is understated elegance, with food that easily qualifies as gourmet. We consider ourselves adventuresome and skilled home chefs, and the G+S easily matched anything we would have had at home, dish for dish. The surf and turn dinner was spectacular, and featured the best (and simplest) crab cake I have ever tasted.
Located in the middle, between the waters of Virginia's Eastern Shore, the G+S proved convenient to our daily wanderings and beach goings. Moving from biking the Chincoteaque park to walking Onancock, and on to watch the sunset at Guard Shore beach, we always welcomed the thought of coming back to the oasis of peace at Garden and Sea Inn.
Thomas and Dorothee (the Inn's owners) made us feel welcome and at home. For that we are grateful, and will certainly be back in the future.
We were looking for a place to stay on the peninsula and looked in the GPS and just picked The Garden and the Sea out of the list. We had no idea what we would find and we were so surprised! What a wonderful place! I can't wait to go back and spend more time there. And the Innkeepers are so friendly and knowledgeable on the area. Great place!
Wonderful discovery on our quick weekend on the Eastern shore. Elegant breakfast and watching the fireworks from our bedroom was a bonus treat. Will most definitely keep the Garden & the Sea in mind for our future trips to the area.
We really loved our stay overall. The innkeepers are so sweet and caring. The only issue with the room was getting in and out of the bathtub/shower. The tub is designed for someone very able-bodied. Someone with a physical handicap would have difficulty, and that was never expressed. For dinner, the crab cake was delicious and worth it, but the steak did not appear to be fillet as stated. The spaghetti with tomato sauce left something to be desired. The meal (other than the crab cake) was overpriced, but it did the trick. Breakfast was abundant and pretty good. The innkeepers really do a good job of keeping a clean, inviting space for us to stay.
My wife and I (with English Bulldog in tow) recently spent 2 delightful evenings at the Garden and Sea B&B and couldn't have had a better time. What impressed us most was the attention to detail that was paid by our innkeepers, Dorothee and Thomas Renn. I will be spending quite a bit of time down in that part of the country on business over the next few months and plan to stay at the Garden and Sea as often as they'll have me.
My husband and I stayed here 2 nights while visiting the Eastern Shore for the first time and to celebrate our anniversary. It was so relaxing and welcoming after riding and sightseeing all day. The innkeepers were very friendly and helped with any concerns. I would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend it.
The inn is beautiful, quiet well kept. Thomas and Dorothee are warm, friendly and serve a lovely breakfast. Im sorry that we were not able to have dinner there but certainly would have. All around a great experience!
It can be difficult to travel with dogs, but all those troubles are put aside at this B&B. The very nice and affable owners have accommodated pet owners excellently here, with readily available dog towels outside of each guest room, large grounds for walks, an outdoor fenced kennel area, and even a pet owners welcome package including a bottle of wine, a can of food and some treats!
The 3 course breakfasts were excellent, as was the dinner. The location is a bit off the beaten path, and slightly tough to find from the main road; however once arrived and settled in, the location works as a relaxed compound with several outbuildings, a pool, and about 5 acres of well kept gardens and grounds. There certainly is more space here to romp than would be available at other inns on Chincoteague Island, which is about 15-20 minutes away.
If you are travelling with pets, and don't mind not being right in the middle of all the action, this is a very nice inn, with friendly innkeepers, nice grounds, and good meals!
A relaxing few days in a setting so creatively put together that one felt far away from the daily grind. Decor was unique in every room we entered. The gardens are wonderful, and the hosts were pleasant, helpful and attentive. I want to go back there - often!
17 family members spent 3 nights at the B&B. Innkeepers were outstanding. They accomodated our every need. We rented every room they had. Breakfasts were varied, delicious, and included healthy options. We brought 2 small dogs with us, and the dogs received the "red carpet" treatment. Location is 15 minutes from the Islands. We loved our experience, and can easily endorse the Inn and the Innkeepers. Great place. Thank you

My husband and I never stay in a hotel..we always stay in B&B's. The Garden and Sea Inn is the only one we have visited twice! Although it is pet friendly, it is so clean you cannot tell that any pets have ever been present. The inn keepers, Doro and Thomas, are warm and friendly and offer excellent food. Snacks and drinks are always available in a kitchen/living room area, the pool is cool and inviting, the gardens are lovely. There is a lot to do in the surrounding area. We highly recommend this B&B!
My wife and I both love the Chincoteague area and wanted to bring our 60 lb. dog with us for few days before summer tourists swarm the area. Having worked on business at adjacent Wallops Island for a few years, I am very familiar with the area's accommodations. I know all of the lodging on the island and although this place was the only real choice for bringing a pet, it was an absolutely fantastic, cozy, and charming B&B!
Granted, it's off of Rt. 13 on a quiet farm area and 15 min outside Chincoteague and you really can't walk to anything. But seriously, there is only so much to see on Chincoteague anyway. You still have to drive several minutes out to Assateaque to get to the beaches and ponies anyway. The location is perfect for exploring the area, as you can easily shoot over to Ocean City or venture elsewhere along the Eastern Shore. We even took one afternoon to go have lunch in Berlin (outside OC) and then up to Rehoboth.
We travel regularly and take note of the small things and this place was meticulous, clean, and very well managed with great attention to detail. Thomas and his wife Dorothee were charming and splendid hosts and you never had to go wandering to look for them. They are very diligent, attentive, and love what they are doing. Oh, and the breakfasts are terrific! Not too early either (8:30-10). Fresh fruit, cereal, coffee...and fresh cooked dishes. One morning we had stuffed French Toast with mascarpone cheese....now that was a surprise!
For us, the combination of price ($165 per night in early May off-season, this was their most expensive room), privacy, relaxation, and convenience you will not find anything better in the area.
Great location and a very comfortable and relaxing stay.
My wife and I stayed at the Garden and the Sea B&B and found it to be very relaxing and comfortable. This was the first real trip with our dog Samson they made us all feel welcomed. He also enjoyed chasing the rabbits and enjoying his treats upon arrival. Thomas and Dorothee are gracious hosts and make you feel right at home. As first time visitors to Virginia's eastern shore, we found the location very accessible to all of the points of interest, i.e.; Ocean City and the Islands. This was a diamond in the rough for sure. We'll be back for sure. Norm Maywright, Alexandria, Va
We so enjoyed the Garden and the Sea B & B in New Church, Va. The inn is lovely and quaint. The innkeepers are friendly and very accommodating. Our breakfast of French toast and cherries was delicious!
The new owners are awesome and the breakfasts were outstanding! It is a peaceful and relaxing place to stay and our dog loved walking the property! I highly recommend it!
I hear the words, "old-world charm" bandied about quite a bit - but this place truly deserves it...and not just because of the endearing German accents of the proprietors. From the decor and restoration to the menu and amenities - this Inn suggested to me a part of more romantic and genteel times. We felt like we were truly guests in someone's home, rather than vacationers renting a room. It was a treat learning the history of the place and an awesome realization upon noting the restoration efforts. When those responsible for your care and comfort truly love what they are doing, it makes all the difference in the world and makes you want to come back. Possibly the only thing I could think of to make the experience better is to have the place located just a little more away from the hubbub of local traffic - but that is one detail I can easily forgive. Thomas and Dorothee Renn have reason to be proud of what they have accomplished and I can only wish it brings them great, and well-deserved, success.
David (and Bridget) Hill
My wife and I loved our stay at the Garden and Sea Inn! The room and other guest accomodations exceeded our expectations. Thomas and Dorothee were very accomodating; they thought of everything that would make us feel welcome. The food was delicious...better than any restaurant in the area! The next time we make a trip to the Eastern Shore, this is where we'll be staying! We'll be recommending the Garden and Sea Inn to everyone we know.
My wife and I just spent three extremely comfortable nights at this B&B that is about 15 minutes from Chincoteague Island.
Congenial hosts Thomas and Dorothee treated us like royalty - even though we are far from that. The dinners they served us were sublime. The breakfasts were scrumptious. I'm thinking about the exceptional French Toast and Surf and Turf right now with a watering mouth.
Our room with it's jacuzzi was almost too comfortable and well appointed to leave.
We were somewhat sorry that we didn't bring our dog, Greta, but other guests had theirs in tow and that made the experience even more enjoyable for us.
We are planning to return.
We loved everything about Garden and The Sea - rooms, grounds, food and innkeepers were fantastic. We are already talking to friends about a return trip.
Especially if you love to travel with your dog, you and your pet will be very comfortable at the Garden and Sea Inn. Very pet-friendly, welcoming and flexible. The Renns (and their cooking) are wonderful. Well worth the few extra minutes from the beach, and we would definitely choose it again for a trip to Assateague or Chincoteague.
The room was more beautiful then I ever could have expected, the service was phenomenal, and the breakfast truly was a FEAST! The only complaint I have is that the TV in the room was very small, but we didn't spend much time watching movies in the room, anyway. Close to the bay and to Chincoteague and Assateague. Wonderful experience overall, I'd recommend it to everyone!

My best friend lives in N.C. I live in N.J. we wanted to find a B&B halfway where we could meet and enjoy long weekends with our dogs. Thomas and Dorothee's hospitality and charm far exceeded our expectations. Breakfast is always wonderful. The rooms are immaculate. The location is central to going so many places of interest. We have met at Garden and Sea twice, in Spring and Fall and plan to come again this Spring. The property is large and good for long walks with the dogs. All the people we have met there have been interesting and fun and the dogs surprisingly well mannered. I highly recommend this wonderful inn. Barbara Kimbrough
We stayed at the Garden and Sea Inn the weekend of Thanksgiving and had a great time. It was the start of the "off" season on the Eastern Shore, but the inn keepers knew what would be open and where to eat! They were very kind, and knowledgeable about the area. Great breakfast food! Stayed in the Champagne room, very private! I would recommend staying here for anyone going to the Eastern Shore... Though it isn't on the island of Chincoteague, it’s worth the short drive to the island to stay here :)

My husband, dog & I were delighted with the Garden & Sea Inn. The inkeepers were so helpful & charming & made us feel like guests in their own home. It is truly a beautiful inn & the location is so convenient to many scenic areas. We heartily recommend the inn to anyone traveling in the area whether they have a dog or not.
Though I have not been to the The Garden & Sea Inn in about 5 years, I used to stay there about 4 times a year when living on the east coast. Tom & Sara became friends and I think about them often. I knew they were looking to sell the property eventually. It appears that they have. According to the reviews it looks as if the Inn is in great hands! This is a truly wonderful place and Chincoteague is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE GETAWAYS. This is coming from someone who has stayed in many B&B's. The Garden & Sea Inn is a can't miss for anyone looking for a true B&B experience.

For the first time, I joined friends who have been staying at the Garden and Sea for many years for a bicycling weekend. What a great place to stay/home base for bicycling -- the Garden and Sea is beautifully kept, welcoming, has big rooms, and best of all, pet friendly. Not just tolerated, pets are celebrated, with no trace of it dimishing the experience for non-pet owners. The hosts are excellent!
We stayed at the Garden and Sea Inn for the second time and we really love this amazing location in the middle of nowhere. It's perfect for relaxing. Doro and Thomas are wonderful hosts who serve an outstanding breakfast.
We definitely will come back.
When the husband is in charge of planning the anniversary getaway, it absolutely has to go right. Fortunately, we chose a B&B that turned out to offer large, well-appointed rooms, great food and super-friendly innkeepers. The anniversary package (wine or champagne, Godiva chocolates and red roses) was the perfect touch. The Chardonnay Room was comfortable with a king-size bed, and the whirlpool tub was the crowning jewel of a super-sized bathroom with a vaulted, skylighted ceiling. Innkeepers Thomas and Dorothee Renn have gotten to know the area well in a short time, and they had good suggestions for sightseeing and dining. We recommend it highly.

I just wanted to have a good night sleep before the 100 miles bike ride in Salisbury. What a wonderful place we found! The room is charming, the bed is great. The dinner was three course - top quality, no need to go anywhere. I am so sorry, I did not taste the breakfast - had to leave at 6 a.m. for a bike ride, but wy wife said it was out of this world. May be next time.
Definitely stay there is you plan to be in the area.

In a sentence: if you are traveling to the Eastern Shore - Assateague, Chincoteague, etc - you won't find anything as comfortable, unique, friendly, and spacious as this wonderful B&B. I planned a few-days getaway with my weimaraner, and Garden & Sea looked appealing online (dog-friendly, big yard, etc). It surpassed even what I'd imagined!
Innkeepers Doro and Thomas are exceptionally friendly and helpful (and cook a mean breakfast that will keep your tummy happy past lunch), the property is well-maintained and the five acres of grassy lawn and woodland is handy for strolling or walking your pet. I stayed in the Chablis suite - king bed, sunny deck, screened porch, big whirlpool tub. More like a little apartment than just a room. I slept like a rock - very quiet environment. There is also a little pool, and books/dvds/magazines/snacks available in one of the houses for all to enjoy.
Getting to Assateague and other points around was easy - this is a good starting point for exploring the area. I also had a Friday dinner at the Inn; like the morning meals, it was tasty and generous portion-wise, well-worth the time and money. The owners set a lovely friendly tone but are in no way intrusive or 'too much' as i've experienced a couple times at other B&Bs. In short, I couldn't recommend this inn more highly; you're in for a treat!
Stopping at the Garden and the Sea B&B was a delightful break in our drive to Hatteras. The basket breakfast that the Innkeepers provided for our early departure was unexpected and delicious.
My hubby and I were given this as an anniversary present. What a great way to get away and spend together. The B&B is not on the island but close enough where it is a 15 min. drive. It's out of the hustle and bustle and the Chablais suite that we had was really spacious! We had two sinks and a comfortable sitting area in a separate house from the main house! The innkeepers are delightful and great cooks. Breakfast was lovely.

our recent stay at the garden & sea inn was absolutely fabulous ! the rooms are spacious & so nicely furnished , the bathrooms are also very large with jetted tubs & fluffy robes & towels . each breakfast was a new culinary delight ! i would recommend everyone to experience this wonderful inn & charming innkeepers .
I love staying at this Inn when I am traveling to the Eastern Shore. Tom and Sara, the former inn keepers were just wonderful and I look forward to meeting the new innkeepers as well. The house is beautiful and secluded.
This B&B sits in a small Virginia town not too far from the beach. It's a very lovely setting with quality furnishings and amenities, great food, wonderful hospitality and dog-friendly! Top Notch! Highly recommended!
Nice big rooms, with hottub very clean, outstanding job with breakfast. Thomas and Dorothee very nice. Would stay again and recommend to anyone pet or no pet.
In June, I enjoyed a perfect vacation at the Garden and Sea Inn. The Champagne Room was a cozy, spacious place to recharge my batteries after a long year's teaching. My Sheltie Layla was as welcome as I was -- she sure appreciated the doggie treats and her very special bowl. The central location of the Inn -- easy access to Chincoteague and a short hop to the Assateague National Seashore (MD side, which allows dogs) -- added to its charm. Best of all are the delightful innkeepers, Thomas and Dorothee. They have the gift of warmth and personable interest in making your stay everything you desire.

A wonderful Labor Day weekend. Friendly yet laid back innkeepers make this a home away from home for the both of us and our two dogs. Great help in finding pet friendly beaches! The inn has opened their dining room for special occasions (like this weekend) and the food is outstanding. Better than that found downtown and no hour wait in line! Single entree with Vegetarian Option. Will choose dinner here again and we will be keeping this B&B as our east shore standard.

One tired couple, two tired therapy dogs, and the perfect B&B -- that was our Labor Day Weekend holiday! Tom and Doro have improved the accommodations even more from my last stay in June -- how they do it, I'll never know because the Inn always seems just perfect. This time, they hosted dinner for their guest on Friday thru Sunday -- the chef was brilliant, the food fresh and original, and the price was far less than you pay in some of those pricey, "pre-fab food" island restaurants. We spent one whole day just lounging around the Inn -- it's a beautiful place and filled with peace. The Shelties are ready to get back to work, and so are we!
We stayed at the Garden and Sea Inn for three nights: the Victorian house is wonderfully restored and immaculately clean. The Innkeepers Thomas and Dorothee are helpful, friendly, hospitable and a delight to talk to. The B&B is close to all the attractions yet tucked away far enough from the all noise. The surrounding garden is well taken care of and a peaceful place to walk.
I highly recommend the Garden and Sea Inn!
My partner and I had a wonderful stay this past weekend. Regardless of weather cooperating, there is something to do at the Inn. The breakfasts, scenery, hospitality & privacy make this a place we will revisit again. It is a short drive from Chincoteague and we would encourage those who desire a B&B on the island to consider this one not too far off the beaten path. Thomas and Dorothee will have you spoiled!
This delightful B&B is a quiet, relaxing, and comfortable place to visit. The rooms are beautifully furnished, with comfortable beds and every amentity for both human and canine guests. The day starts with an excellent breakfast served in the pleasant dining room. For guests with dogs, the well-kept grounds provide plenty of options for walks and places to sit and relax. Thomas and Dorothee are thoughtful and charming hosts, and go out of their way to ensure that guests enjoy their stay. We are already planning a return visit!
My partner and I could not have been more pleased. We had a wonderful 2 day stay. We were in the Garden House. The parlor was stocked with cold drinks, snacks and fruit. Games and books were available. We planned to visit the island for activities but changed our minds, we decided to swing and read books all weekend. Sitting on the semi private porch listening to the sounds of nature. The German breakfasts we outstanding. The Host, Were so gracious. Dorothee has a wonderful strong handshake for such a little lady. Thomas and Doro always smiled and waved. The houses were beautiful. I asked for a cake for the birthday girl and WOW!! CHAMPAYNGE was suggested also. We are definatley planning to make this a once a year treat for ourselves. A great place to visit!!!

My husband, 4 year old son and I had a wonderful stay while at the Garden and Sea Inn. Doro and Thomas made use feel right at home. The Inn and the surrounding grounds are decorated beautifully and provide a great escape from the normally crowded beach hotels. We definately plan to make another trip to the Garden and Sea Inn next summer(or sooner) and will recommend it to all our friends.

We just stayed at the Garden and Sea Inn with our 2 yr old toddler and our little dog for the weekend. The rooms were very comfortable and the overall cleanliness in the rooms , the common areas of the Inn and the Pool were just impeccable. The Innkeepers have accommodated us with a very welcoming and friendly atmosphere. We can't wait to go back to the Inn.
My daughter and I stayed 2 nights, our first stay at a B&B. Very impressed with the hosts' hospitality and friendliness. Thomas and Dorothee are genuine and sincere innkeppers. We came to area to see the ponies swim on Chincoteague, Thomas and Dorothee were considerate to print out itinerary of island travel for the event, very appreciated to streamline our travel. Our room was very comfortable and roomy. Breakfasts delicious (even the "lunch bag" on Pony Penning Day) Very charming property. You can tell they take pride in their Inn, and share it's wonderful history. Would definately visit again if we find ourselves back on the eastern shore. Lesa and Ali - Wisconsin
This was our first time staying in a B&B and it well exceeded our expectations. The grounds are lovely and the rooms very spacious... and the stuffed croissant was amazing! It is obvious Thomas and Dorothee take great pride in their business, there wasn't one detail overlooked. They were so accomodating, even when we locked ourselves out of the room at 10:30pm Thomas came right away and was so gracious. It is a wonderfull place with wonderful owners. We will definitely come back!
My huband Mike and I stayed for 3 nights with our German Short Haired Pointer named Maggie Girlfriend.
What a great way to spend my birthday.
Doro and Thomas made us feel very welcomed and comfortable. We were in the the Shiraz Suite which was perfect with the side fenced in yard for Maggie.
I highly recommend this hidden gem. I would definitely come back!
My husband and I just spent 3 nights and the Garden and Sea Inn. What a wonderful, relaxing experience! This was our first trip to a B&B, but it won't be our last! Thomas and Dorothee were such charming hosts, making us feel comfortable and pampered from the beginning. An added plus--they are pet friendly, so we brought our mini. poodle along! What a wonderful experience! I highly recommend this B& B to anyone looking for a relaxing, stress-free visit. We will return!
We stayed for two nights. Doro and Thomas, the innkeepers, make you feel right at home. When we arrived, Doro gave us a tour of the property, which includes 3 buildings... The gardens and scenery are spectacular. I loved the paths between the houses. You forget where you are! The Garden and Sea B&B goes above and beyond to make their guests feel welcome. They are very accommodating in every area. It seems as though they have thought of everything, down to the last detail. If we are in the area again, we will certainly stay here! Thank you!

We were so delighted and very pleased with the hospitality and great breakfasts! Even better, we were able to bring our small dog, who was very good! Highly recommend!
My husband, daughter & I just had the most wonderful stay at The Garden & Sea Inn, 4188 Nelson Rd P.O. Box 275 New Church, Virginia 23415, www.gardenandseainn.com. The innkeepers, Thomas & Doro, are friendly & did everything possible to make us feel welcome, comfortable and well-cared for. They have renovated the buildings with tender, loving care. We stayed in the Chablis Suite, which was just beautiful, with the perfect set-up for us (bedroom) & our daughter (sleeper sofa, TV, refrigerator & coffee maker on the other side of the bathroom, which featured a spa bathtub). The breakfast was out of this world, way too much food, & they volunteered to pack up the baked goods for later in the day. When they noticed our daughter preferred the delicious sausage to anything else, they gave her a double helping the rest of our stay. when the weather turned rainy, they asked whether she liked puzzles, and left 3 in the room. The grounds are beautiful. What makes this place unique is that pets are also welcome, but everything is so well kept, that you would never know it was also pet-friendly. There are baskets for fresh & used beach towels for dogs on each building's porch; there are bags & a receptacle for dog waste. We brought our Brittany spaniel & had a great time.
Stay here whether or not you have children and/or pets; you will feel totally pampered.
Our stay at the Garden and Sea Inn was wonderful. All the rooms were large, beautifully decorated, and had thier own modern bathroom. The Innkeepers were so gracious, greeting you at the door,to help you with anything. The food was delicious and plentiful. Most importantly, lots of peace and quiet, but close to Chincoteague.
My husband and I have stayed at dozens of B & B's and this has become our no.1 favorite. We spent 3 days here in early April '09, stayed in the Chablis Suite. The bed was incredibly comfortable... I even questioned the innkeeper about the bedding and promptly replaced my blanket at home with the one we had on the bed in the Chablis Suite! Plush towels and bathrobes, a bottle of wine, and accomodations for our dog made us feel very indulged and pampered. Breakfast and the company of the innkeepers was a truly wonderful experience and we feel we've made some friends for life. I highly recommend Garden and Sea B&B Inn!!!

Our stay at the Garden and the Sea B&B Inn, was just supposed to be a stop on a trip from Myrtle Beach to Pennsylvania. It turned out to be a great destination. Every step from reservations through the lovely breakfast (included) was easy, thoughtful, and delightful. The Innkeepers have paid every attention to detail. The rooms are charming, large, clean and the place is warm and elegant. And when they say dogs are welcome, they really mean it, providing special attention to rover's needs. An absolutely fabulous experience. Recommend it highly. Marilyn Rosenthal, Ph.D. and Daniel Freeman, DDS, and Gig (the Bichon Frise)
My husband and I went to spend Thanksgiving weekend and took our dogs with us. Not only was the B&B very quaint and cozy, but breakfast was outstanding. Thomas and Dorothy are delightful and very warm, making our stay a superb experience.

We had a wonderful vacation. My husband & I agree that it was the most relaxing vacation we've ever taken. We chose here because it was pet friendly. In fact, we had the Dog Lover's Package. We have 6 small well-behaved rescue dogs that came with us & they had fun, too. Not only was our room fantastic, but the breakfasts were absolutely delicious & looked like they came out of a magazine--almost too beautiful to eat. Our room was spacious, beautifully decorated, yet so comfortable. It was like a bridal suite. We had a chance to view some of the other rooms in each of the 3 separate buildings, so we could tell our friends about all the different possibilities in rooms & all were so remarkable & unique in their own themes. They all were immaculate. The treats that were available were enjoyed by us & the dogs enjoyed their treats too. There were other amenities for the dogs, too, that you can inquire about when you call. We stayed here for 4 days & will definitely be back. The owners were friendly & so were the cleaning personnel. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!!!
We thorougly enjoyed our long weekend at this tranquil B&B. The location is great if you want to see a lot of the lower Eastern Shore, and the facilities are comfortable and indeed very dog-friendly. The best part was getting a chance to chat with Thomas and Dorothee, our innkeepers. They are charming and attentive hosts, and we are happy we had some time to get to know them and to learn about their plans for the inn. We will definitely return!
Needed a break and decided to visit Smith Island. Never been to a B&B so this was a 1st time experience for my wife and I. Short ride from Crisfield and Chicoteaque. Spent one night and a had a great breakfast and rode to Chicoteaque for a festival. Location is great, clean and really peaceful. Host are very friendly and helpful for directions. Go and enjoy!

My husband and I spent our 10th anniversary at the Garden and Sea Inn and it was everything we hoped it would be. The owners are delightful, the breakfast was divine and we plan to visit again. Beautiful grounds and gardens and a lovely, spacious room.
We loved staying at the Garden and the Sea Inn. Thomas and Doro are great hosts even if they are new in the B&B business. We will definitely recommend it to friends and we hope to come back again soon.
I enjoyed my stay at Garden and the Sea B&B Inn very much. It's a short 11 miles to the beach! Dorothy and Thomas are very charming and ensure the guests are well cared for.
By the owners Thomas and Dorothee. Very Friendly, great rooms, and excellent breakfasts. Would suggest letting guests know of limited times to make up the rooms to plan accordingly!

we had a wonderful stay. the inn was an a 5 acre lot with comfortable spaciouse rooms. the innkeepers were friendly, hospitable and helpful. i would and will recommend this inn to friends and family
Everything was incredible! The food was great and the hosts were great. A wonderful experience altogether and close enough to the beach and shopping! Will definitely be back.
Thomas and Dorothie were gracious hosts. The breakfasts were outstanding, however, we were disappointed that they did not offer dinner as the previous owners did. There are not a lot of places to eat nearby. We drove to Chincoteage for dinner almost every night. The Inn was clean and the people that brought their dogs were very consistant about cleaning up and keeping the dogs quiet. The grounds were adequate. The Inn is one block in from Route 13 and you do hear the road noise. Overall a nice getaway for you and your dogs.
My stay at the Garden and Sea Inn was unforgettable and awesome. THe food was excellent and the place met my need for a quiet and relaxed atmosphere away from the busy week at work. I hope to stay there again. It's worth the trip.
Everything was incredible! The food was great and the hosts were great. A wonderful experience all together and close enough to the beach and shopping. We will definitely be back.
The Garden and Sea Inn is located just a few miles from Chincoteague. It's actually a compound of several buildings, with just two or three guest rooms in each house. It's very private, quiet, well-landscaped, and a vacation unto itself. Although pets are welcome, we found no evidence of them in our room. Everything was very clean and orderly. The breakfasts were outstanding -- by far the most sophisticated meals we ate during our three-night stay at the inn and in the area.
My wife and I spent 3 nights at this Inn. It was our first time in a Bed and Breakfast and it will certainly not be our last. The rooms were clean with an old fashion decor and modern amenities. Breakfast every morning was excellient. Thomas and Dorothee were more like friends than Inn keepers. They both went out of there way to make your stay pleasant. We will return again to visit this area and our new friends.
My wife and I just spent two wonderful nights at this charming bed and breakfast just a short drive from Chincoteague and Assateague islands. The new owners were extremely attentive to our every needs, and yet not intrusive at all! Wonderful breakfasts combined with excellent suggestions about dining in the local area combined for a wonderful and relaxing weekend. Even the incessant rain couldn't put a damper on our stay as it gave us an excuse to cuddle up to the fire and take a nap! A wonderful time, with wonderful hosts!
We have stayed here three times, and loved it each and every time. Service is laid back yet professional. It is a comfortable atmosphere, warm and relaxing.
